This song kinda reminds me of how much I don’t show my emotions. Like..I don’t cry. I try not to let people see me sad or vulnerable in any way. I only really let people see me when I’m happy or angry. Due to past experiences, I feel unsafe showing people my more vulnerable side- It always makes me think they’re gonna stab me in the back at some point. So this song kinda feels relatable. I’m tough on the outside, but on the inside I just want comfort and validation, but I’m just too scared to really show that. Now I only show my vulnerable side to people I really know I can trust- Like my significant others. Not my family though- they’re kind of apart of my trust issues 😭

I feel like this song is about someone in a bad relationship with this guy who's toxic or something. Listen I don't know much about mitski songs so this is my personal opinion. The first two lines is her saying how real men don't need other people to deal with their problems and just keep it to themselves, they "suck it in." She would be the same and keeping everything to herself an not asking for help when she needs it. Then she says that "real men don't flinch or bleed in public" as in they're 'brave' and don't get hurt easily possibly by others. "I think I'm a real man" is her saying she does all these things 'real men' do which in her case isn't good. She then proceeds to talk about 'little boys' saying they "cry and look around for comfort and always get what they want." This could be the guy she's dating constantly nagging her about his own problems and maybe manipulating her into doing whatever he wants to 'feel better.' "Little boys see toys and say I can take that" Toys could be seen as girls and when deciding to date, he'd probably think it wasn't so hard to have a girlfriend and puts little to no effort in their relationship. "You are my little boy" is her talking about her boyfriend saying he's just her little boy. And maybe that she's more of a man than he could ever be. The first chorus is about her probably wanting her bf to take some time to appreciate her and say "I love you' or just a complement. "Real men keep cool in the face of a fire" means that when ever there is an intense situation, real men are calm and don't panic. Maybe she keeps cool when her bf gets mad as he would be the 'fire'. "Go down with the ship" could mean that she would take the blame for everything her bf does wrong or when he gets mad. The next two lines about real men being above eatingcould mean that they don't need to eat to become stronger because they already are. Her becoming a 'real man' means that she wants to prove her strength and that she doesn't need help with her problem. By the second chorus, her getting naked could represent her finally telling her bf about her feelings and how she feels about his actions in hopes that he'll understand and try to change his ways. Her calling him 'sir' could be hope that he'll finally be a man and start putting in effort. The next line about how little boys make her feel lovely for a little while could mean that (MAYBE) only during intercourse is she appreciated and loved. Finally the last line about her little boy saying that now he wants her after she's had enough and maybe doesn't care what he does which would be, "go ahead do it, do it" Some lines could maybe suggest she was being physically abused like her wanted to get stronger or prove that she's okay to others. A lot of people say that this song is about misogyny and maybe that could be the surface and ig I may have looked too deep into this but whatever.
