Hey everyone welcome to the channel!
A lot has happened since I started the channel so much of the info in my intro video needs updating. For one, our family recently moved to Colorado so no we're now doing life and making BBQ at a mile high. I'm not officially pastoring at the moment, but currently work to help a Christian non-profit do some behind the scenes work as they serve pastors and their families through counseling and mentoring.
I've been smoking on modified electrics, kettles, pellets, bullets, drums and offsets. I love the learning process and sharing the final product with others (except when the cooks go bad of course). In addition to the process and craft of making good BBQ, I also enjoy exploring new tools and gadgets too. I post videos about BBQ and share some product reviews every now and then. Thanks for stopping by!

This pen is a premium entry into the category with an OLED display, fast readings, precise accuracy and elegant looks. Minus one design flaw with the exposed probe tip, I would say this product is easily one of my favorite thermometer pens so far. Typhur InstaPro...

Making Smoked Sausages and 3 Lessons Learned
Tallow when you wrap. Also using Turkey roasters to hold at 140-150* is a game changer.
The reported Typhur range is false. This from their own support after I bought their product. “Verify Proximity Between Base and Probe: Ensure that the distance between the base and the probe is not too far. If the distance exceeds 10 meters/32 feet, the probe and base may repeatedly attempt to connect, leading to intermittent disconnection issues.” Hardly 400’
I definitely don’t keep my base farther than 30 feet from the probes for a consistent connection as well.
Its on sale now for 159
Great video! I have a Wsm 22 but have yet to try a brisket on it. What temp were you cooking on the Wsm?
I’m so glad you learned how to slice a brisket. I also had the greatest feax pas on a brisket I cooked for a friend’s dinner party. 30 guests and I got lucky! That was about 15 years ago. Lessons learned.
How long could hold porl ribs on the warmer and the temp on it
I don’t know what the pros do, but I rarely hold ribs over 2 hours. It would also depend whether or not they were sauced or not.
I wouldn’t move there if that was the case 😢
Haha. We love where we are now but I hear ya.
Yoooo I think you have it set for reverse flow except your stack I think you need to move your stack the the back side
I own all 3, and I'll never buy Meater again. I've had 7 of their products, and they're consistently junk. I despise Tappeque, Fireboard, and Chef IQ fir the same reasons. I love my ThermoPro and Typhur. Thermoworks is king of wired setups, and I can't wait for Thermoworks and ThermoPro to release wifi wireless probes.
I agree I’ve had two mentees and the both broke. Also customer service was terrible.
What’s the battery life on probes and unit got the typhus
U mentioned you had to charge the base? Did it not last all night?
Sorry it’s been awhile since I ran this initial test. I think it was around 20 hours before the battery was getting low. There have been several firmware updates since and I’ve been able to monitor a brisket cook and rest totaling 16-20 hours without needing to charge.
I like how it shows time remaining for the cook. Which is very helpful. I think I'm buying this one
The Meater also does a great job estimating remaining time. All the units I’ve tested however aren’t the best when it comes to estimating longer low and slow cooks like brisket and pork shoulder.
got the tyfur for 150 now
That is awesome!
Hi, I think I see an exhaust deflector inside the pit on the outlet. if I did how do you find they work?
To do it again, I’d only get the heat deflector/tuning plate for the bottom and leave the exhaust/smoke stack alone. The airflow is already limited and by adding both, my airflow suffered a lot the smoke profile was noticeably more dirty.
@@HuSmokin That is a good tip. Much appreciated.
Awesome depth of testing and made my decision easy. Was leaning towards the tupher but you got me over the edge.! Thank you!!!
Recently bought a OJ Highland and use it more as a grill but really appreciate your efforts
I thought you weren’t allowed to smoke in the new place??? Could you have kept the 1975? Tough on the channel with out her 😂
Haha! I am. But gas and pellets only. Even the charcoal smokers I wanted to use are technically a no no. Plus we don’t have the space for such a majestic beast anymore. Yah as you can tell after the 1975 left… the channel has been crickets.
Thanks for the review. I just got mine, looking forward to using it.
What sort of meat grinder do you use?
I have the 0.5hp Meat! Grinder.
I've only had the TP620 about a week, however I am cooking on the Blackstone nightly. So far I am having mixed results. It does help me make a better steak/chicken, however I find myself watching and waiting for the final temp after inserting the thermometer. The claim is 2-3 seconds, but I believe it is more like 6 or 8. I know, still better than old school analog, however I lose confidence since I can watch it climb until it finally stops 6-8 seconds later, even longer. I do like the large digital reader and it works well until you get that angle where reflection voids it. Seems like an unreasonable complaint on the surface, but when you are trying to position thermometer and holding for 5 or more seconds over a 36" searing hot griddle, it can be annoying. I paid $29, so while I think it is par for the course at that price point, the normal price of $60 is not even close. So, while I probably will keep it, I imagine my frustration will force me to search for a better primary. So, save money where it makes sense; I am not sure this is it... BTW, I expected a nice carrying case, but they no longer include it, at least on the Amazon model.
Jeez this is a huuuge bummer of a video! Stay in Cali, don’t move 😂
Haha we’ve been gone for a year… but still missing this 1975.
Still happy with it 2 years later?
Unfortunately had to part ways with it last year. My favorite smoker by far. But the place we moved to wouldn’t allow it.
I just ordered a Typhur Sync for $150,97 delivered
Have you done any testing of the accuracy of the ambient temp sensors? To me that’s just as important as the internal temp accuracy. The built in sensor on my pellet smoker is not close to accurate so I rely on a secondary temp probe which is currently wired. Thanks for the review.
Hey man, i know this video was posted a while ago but how did the casters do moving it from front to back? Ordered it on casters but debating on the cart now. Looks like you moved it fairly easily with a nice crew. Would probably just be me and my wife. haha
Bro, good video. Very helpful
You’re saying everything that I would say I love operating offset smoker and I like all my gadgets great video, and I like your honest opinion on stuff. Thank you very much.
But how many of them could survive searing over direct fire?
Very even-handed review. I just got mine last week. I use a FireBoard pit controller and food probe combo which I feel is without equal but, it isn't wireless. So, I added the Typhur to my kit. Some additional info- Their are 5 sensors inside the stem plus the ambient. In the app you can see each one on the "advanced" screen. Second, the app will give you a.predicted time to reach the target temps.. very useful. Finally, all 6 sensors update several times per second! Just waiting for Wear OS support so I can get notifications on my watch.
Just got Typhur for $159 with $40 off coupon.
Please dont take this the wrong way, but is it supposed to look rusted and that rough inside? Thanks.
😬 Yanno, I never asked myself that. I just assumed it’s normal before seasoning after seeing a handful of other smokers arriving that way too. After the initial seasoning and a couple cooks, that patina wasn’t noticeable anymore inside.
Same things been happening to me I’m still trying to learn
I use the TP-19 and think it works just fine. Stepping up into using any of these from guessing or relying on time, etc is going to make a quality difference in your food. And the $30 Thermopro is a huge step up from my old analog 'instant' reads. I like Themopro enough that I have two of the ones w/ a brain box, and cabled probe(s). Still, I'm a maniac and will probably get a Thermoworks down the road, but not priority. Oh.....I also have one of those IR temp guns.....those things are useful.
Agree with all that. At this point I’ve had the opportunity to try a handful of brands. ThermoPro has consistently been a solid performer at the best price points for me. Which IR temp gun do you have?
Klein, I'm pretty sure. Have misplaced, so can't verify, but think it's just one from HD, not food specific. Good for checking pan skillet/fry pan/wok temps and pizza steel/stones. My main point is even the cheapest digital thermometer is going to up your game over old fashioned 'poke the meat w/ your finger to judge resistance, et al methods. Am a disciple of Kenji. Food Lab is MY bible. You're off to better food w/ any thermometer. Cooking is science. The art of food is tasting for balance, the presentation, and if creative your own recipes or variants of old. Cheers mate.
I picked up the Typhur Sync a month or so ago - have to save it works great - on the App - are you able to put a range of temps for the ambient temp (like you can do with the MEATER) so that it will notify you if your temp goes below or above that range ? Thank you
Congrats! Glad you’re still enjoying yours. To answer your question, absolutely. From the app you’ll want to set up “alerts” by selecting the probe then press the bell icon toward the bottom right. Press the “+” icon and you’ll see options to set up ambient, internal, and general time alarms. If you’re using both probes, you’ll need to do this for each. Hope that helps!
@@HuSmokin thank you!
I have a meater 2,and that thing disconnects and reconnects so much I want to toss it in the trash
The only advantage I can see of the Meater over Typhur is the ambient temperature limit. That said, the Typhur upper limit 572℉. I can't think of anything I'd cook that's going that high.
Searing a steak on the grill can exceed that
I ordered the typhur sync on amazon for 183. I checked and seems like i got it on sale and it is now back up. But still only 199.
Would have been nice to have done a cook with all 3 in that big piece of meat..
What would be the best offset smoker to get under 4k?
Congrats on your escape from Oakland.... great comparison. Thank you
Haha. Thank you.
Typhur by far is the most state of the art with bluetooth 5.4 which is why you got that range compared to the older 5.2 from the others. Nice review.
Former employee. Not a great guy to work for he would cut hours every week, no healthcare or 401k, also was impatient and fired me after 1 bad day. No patience to train new welders when its an entry level job. Also would make homophobic jokes (not knowing im gay)
Ack. The healthcare and retirement benefits bit is understandable… but everything else is disturbing. Sorry to hear that. Hope you’ve found a better spot.
@@HuSmokinYeah its all good I work for a union now lol. To be fair to him his grills are pretty good its just that he wasn't good at hiring and training new people. Hell even before he gave me the job he would complain about his previous hires and even on the job as well. Not very professional in my opinion.
Awesome video... Do you take the the unit you picked everywhere? You do take your phone. So with the one you picked I'm assuming you carry both phone and standalone unit together? Meater on the app in your phone. I don't see your reasoning. Hands down Meater ...... Good info thou. Thanks.
Hey Adan thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure I follow what you're saying about taking my phone everywhere though. Yes I do take my phone everywhere. With either the Meater, TempSpike or Typhur units, you'll want to keep the base close to your cooker/probes. Then the base unit will transmit the probe readings via bluetooth to your phone. The problem here is that bluetooth can only transmit so far, so depending on your home or competing signals, you'll have limited range to keep getting those readings on your phone. Personally, I can't get the Meater to stay connected via Bluetooth when I have my phone upstairs. Of the 3, only the Typhur Sync has WiFi built into the base. This means the probe sends data to the base unit, then the base unit connects to your home Wi-Fi into the Typhur servers... and this gives you the ability to monitor the cook from anywhere as long as you have data access from your phone. So when I'm roaming around the house, doing some yard work out front, and running to the store for a quick errand... I can continue monitoring my progress from the Typhur app. In regards to the standalone feature, again you're right in that I usually have my phone with me. But I can also be a little old school in that I don't want to be tethered to it all the time. I like how the Typhur and the TempSpike give me immediate readings from the display so when I'm multitasking in the kitchen and preparing a Christmas meal, I don't have to pull my phone out with my dirty hands, open the app, and wait for the data to refresh to see my temps. Instead, I can just look down at the base unit and that's it... done. Hopefully that clarifies why I continue to choose Typhur unit over the Meater.
@@HuSmokincouldn’t have explained it better myself….I think they are both good but I definitely think your right, the typhur is the clear winner …..but the price I think scares people , but remember your getting two probes AND Wi-Fi capabilities with quick read Display…..that’s definitely something to take in consideration
The sticker shock is very real, especially when you consider how many alternatives there are on the market. The Typhur definitely falls under the category of buy once cry once 👍🏼
Great video, thank you. I agree with your conclusion!
Thanks for watching!
Great tests! I wished you wouldve tested the battery life of the probes.
Ah! You’re right. I can do that and pin the results in the comments. If it helps, and assuming the new MEATER does what the previous one could, all 3 have lasted over 20 hours before. This was tested over a 10 hour cook with brisket followed by the cool down and oven hold for another 10 hours.
@@HuSmokin 50 hrs on Typbur and when you register you also extend your warranty to 3 years way beyond anyone else’s warranty.
Thanks for the video, how are you guys enjoying life in Colorado?
👍🏼 Colorado has been very good to us. Smoking meat at this altitude has been a learning process and the ocean is definitely missed.
Great video. Keep it up.
Thanks!
Thanks for the review…a few things, one is connectivity for wireless 5ghz? It appears their is a safety line to insert probe how does that compare to other probes? Thickness of probe seems s little on the thick side for delicate slices…no direct grill temperature mentioned….so will have to do some more analysis paralysis..lol
Good questions. The Sync only uses 2.4ghz. Thankfully it hasn’t been finicky with our mesh system at home. Regarding the safety line, all of the probes I’ve used, including the new MEATER 2 Plus have a safety notch or minimum insertion requirement. And yes the thickness of all of the probes are thicker than the traditional wired ones. The MEATER 2 Plus is definitely the thinnest probe and helps alleviate some of these issues.
Thanks@@HuSmokin
Good video
Good review, thanks! I have the Typhur Sync as well (plus two other similar products), and I agree that the Sync is now king of the hill. Wifi (a must, IMO), multiple probes, and multiple sensors per probe . . . it's a winner.
Awesome! How long have you had it?
@@HuSmokin I've had it a couple of weeks now, and done maybe five cooks with it, from steak to brisket. Typhur apparently has an app update coming out today that will add more functionality, such as the ability to turn off alerts at the base, and the ability to see the temp at all of the individual sensors in the probe. So I'm looking forward to that!
