Rhythmic and melodic “motifs” are used frequently in music across most genres, especially present in extended compositions with multiple movements (symphonies, soundtracks etc). The broader concept also exists in literary works and other forms of media where the motif may be an object, word, phrase, image, symbol etc. Among several functions, it serves to establish a central theme of the artwor...

Mazbou Q & Jessie Booth - What If (Official Lyric Video)
Man i love your videos, although I don't understand a lot of this stuff. This is a question for anyone who sees to answer. I have not (yet) learned music theory, which i assume would help me understand all this stuff. My question is: Is it absolutely necessary for a rapper to know all this stuff? The reason I ask is not because I am too lazy to learn it or I'm trying to cut corners, but for a number of other reasons, which I will mention. I may go on a few necessary tangents here and there, but if you have read this far, please stick with me. Im 27 years old. I've loved and dreamt of being a rapper since I was a kid. But where I grew up, although we all listened to rap, we would laugh at anybody who even tried to do so, so as a kid I wasn't really trying to learn. The most I would do was occasionally trying to think of rhymes for complicated words in my head. But as a kid and still now as an adult, I've always been very good with numbers and maths in general. I mean very good. I hate sounding arrogant, but I used to have to help people 2 years ahead of me study for exams about things I hadn't been taught yet. Im Irish so just to explain, in school we have 2 main exams before college. Junior Cert [JC] (average age about 15-16) and Leaving Cert (average age about 17-18). I left school before the Leaving Cert, unfortunately, and for the 3 years leading up to the JC, I had the worst attendance out of roughly 200 students in my year. We done a mock exam for the JC prior to it and apparently I was the only one in the school's history to score 100% on the mocks in the maths exam. It immediately had my school treating me different (in a good way, at first). It actually led to social workers getting involved because they thought I was wasting potential. Anyway the point is I hated school but loved doing anything to do with numbers. The reason it relates to my question is because to me, maths and numbers were just like puzzles. I loved the whole problem solving aspect of it. Fast forward to present day and I have just been mostly self-teaching myself to rap just from listening to it, and actually have to give a lot of credit to KnoxHill. His music breakdowns opened a door for me where I started thinking of rap more technically, like a puzzle. It was like I found a way to apply my skills with numbers to writing raps. Now, I do a lot of writing just as practice mostly and just to keep as ammunition for potential songs. But there is a lot of stuff I have written that I am fairly proud and confident about. There are things from your videos that I have been doing by myself unknowingly just because its like a puzzle and I always try to do something new and different with everything I write. Although I have a long way to go in terms of learning how to do good punch lines and better storytelling and things of that nature, but when it comes to writing different multi syllable schemes and figuring out creative flows and ways to make them fit with the beat, I feel like I at least have some talent or ability. Usually, I would think that it can't hurt to learn more things, but my fear is that it may overcomplicate the way I write. I feel like I finally just found my footing and I feel like it works for me. I have a process, but I also have a problem with overthinking and I worry that I will end up trying too hard to the point where instead of me making the music I envisioned, I'll be making music because I want to see if i can do a certain technique. Now with all that being said, I also have a good reason for me to actually learn music theory. When i say writing is like a puzzle for me, its not just the lyrics but the whole beat and music itself. For example, the one concept/song i am most excited about does something i have never seen anyone do with the lyrics, but the beat exists solely in my mind. I know how I want it to sound, what instruments and samples i want to use, and where. I have the song almost fully mapped out in my head and on the paper. But I do not yet have the understanding to turn the puzzle in my head into actual music. I did do some experimenting with producing using CakeWalk, but when there was somethingI didnt know how to do, I found it almost impossible to find any tutorials or guides. Im okay when it comes to the drums and 808s and whatnot, but I struggle with getting other instruments to sound how I want them to when put together. For example, i can make a melody that sounds good and fits with the drums using one instrument. I can do the same with another instrument. But when i put the 2 instruments together, there will be parts that simply dont sound right and just sounds off key or off note (I dont even know all the right terminology which is more reason to learn music theory lol). When i watched tutorials, there were phrases I didn't understand, which made a lot of the tutorials null and void. I want to be able to produce my own music completely. Like I said I am Irish. My accent already puts me at a massive disadvantage IMO. But I want to actually lean into that. I want to create my own sound thats unique and actually add a bit of Irish music influence. UK has its own sort of style. There's different sounds and styles from different parts of the US. I haven't came across many other Irish rappers. None that I really liked or would listen to regularly. Because its just usually an Irish accent over UK or US type beats. I haven't seen anything original yet. It's usually a bunch of fakes pretending that they are gangsters. There is no authenticity. I think that's disrespectful to hip hop culture. If i am going to eventually release my own music, I want it to be real and add to the landscape instead of copying. It needs to sound different while still being hip hop. I have so many ideas. I just don't have the full knowledge, or tools, to make them into something. I kind of answered my own question here, but I would still appreciate any opinions or advice. The funny thing is I bought a mini keyboard a while back that was supposed to come with Pro Tools free. I committed myself to learning music theory simultaneously as I was learning to use Pro Tools, but it wouldn't let me use Pro Tools over some mistake with the region or some crap like that. That and then not being able to get a decent DAW with good tutorials, among other personal things, made me lose motivation. That was 2 years ago. I still did the occasional bit of writing if I ever thought of something. But these last few months I've been writing a lot. I have mapped out and have a rough draft of whole albums. Again, it's all like a puzzle to me. It's very hard to put into words without making this comment any longer. So im just going to stop writing now. I apologize for the essay, but the truth is I dont have anybody who I can talk to this stuff about, so I get carried away. If anyone has any advice or questions, please leave a reply. Keep up the good work, Q. I hope you don't mind if i copy and paste this onto a couple more of your videos just to increase the odds anyone reads it

Ppl forget PAC was only 25!!
Best song on the album
I heard Tupac essence through the howling vocals and emotional energy reincarnated is too powerful ❤
I felt it but didn't realise it 🏆... Thank you kaka
Ain't bad but ain't no Mr. Dibbs Turntable Hardcore either.
Strange Music has been doing exactly this for over 20 years lol.
Thats my fav track on there bc of that
This warmed my heart.
That first one sound sooo much like Tommy's Theme by Noisia
Phewwwwww fire!!!
I realised this on my first listen but i didnt know what exactly about the flow it was thanks for explaining
Im sorry! I dont mean that
You make music boring
Thats interesting because i like to start alot of my raps the same way but didnt realize the science behind it. I just know its a good pocket to rhyme in
This was actually really....... Bad
BROOO where did the guitar track go while you were raping 😭
Are you in a f……g acapella group?
Personally i believe both are necessary. Its a contrast. What is one without the other?
J Cole's microtimed
Tupac mad overrated
I kinda agree but mostly because his career was stopped short. If he had had more years ahead of him, he would've surely delivered on people's opinion of him.
Sound like freeway
Me personally, I use both when I write and freestyle...about 60-70% microtimed and about 30% or so in straight flow, while using half pauses to "juggle" in between syllables when snapping words. These are awesome tekniks when combined
he switched back to 3s when he said "it's consistency" which is literally a consistent rhythm (even 3 notes instead of the swung part) this man is insane!!
aka a slow waltz at 3/4
I would like to hear a drummer play along with this and switch up at the same time
Appreciate the cadence/flow pattern breakdown. I also hear Eminem in reincarnated as well.
Naaaaah. Where exactly are you hearing Eminem at in this song? Give me specific examples
@chiarosuburekeni9325 His delivery, cadence and certain schemes. He's a mix of Pac and Em imo and its evident on this song. To me its evident throughout the song in terms of cadence, flow and story telling but Even towards the end of the song where he was rapping as Lucifer and God, Eminem has done similar concepts with the Devil and/or Slim Shady. Different topics but similar techniques. Now Em was also inspired by Pac. But there are things that Kendrick does here that mirror both Em and Pac.
@ nah I’m not getting that even a little bit here lol. Stop glazing the 52 year old who has been putting out mid music for over a decade now please. It’s disrespectful to both pac and Kendrick 😎
Definitely disagree. I don't think the direct influence (Em -> Kendrick) is as prevalent as the indirect influence (Pac -> Em -> Kendrick)
Cool vid thanks for the content
He is da professor, born like that.
Should have stuck with 8th notes not triplets but that just what i think
Always cooking🔥🔥
One feels underneath the beat and one feels like surfing the beat.
Where guitar sounds in your rap😢
Kiwi dude. Knows his rap
Thank you so much, i love this, so helpful man 😊 thank you.
Djip Djop
Did you go to school for this or did you school yourself??
Did Berklee make those notes public? I'd like a copy!
Beat was also lowkey reminiscent of the "end of times" vibe.
I’m almost positive they sampled hit em up and just upped the bpm
Do you guys not research what you're talking about? Google is right there. The instrumental is from Pac's "Made N*ggaz" m.ruclips.net/video/GuDSpChmiV0/видео.html
Photonics is one of my favorite track of yours.
Rhythmic tension! What a beast!
Nu \m/
Beat comes from the track Phenomenon - One and One. Absolute banger.
Been listening to your music lately. Would love to get an interview with you on my podcast across the pond in America.
This is super interesting and well made! Just gained a new sub
K dot really reincarnated on this one!!
🎵 PHOTONICS. - Mazbou Q
Do you have a video on the NYC flow? Jay Z, Nas, Biggie, Mase, Big L etc. type of rap?
Why is Kendrick’s accent so weird? The way pronounces consonants
His delivery on this verse of the song is different than usual because he's trying to channel the energy of John Lee Hooker. In the last verse when he is playing himself, he reverts to a more Kendrick delivery wherein I don't think his consonants are particularly weird.
@ but his accent was weird even on Section 80. The way he emphasizes consonants
Don't know what's wrong with kdot, like he's cadance has changed completely, I noticed that when he came back with Mr morale great album by the way. I thought it was only for the project, It difficult to listen to him now, honestly@@Iaintthesharpesttoolintheshed
@@Iaintthesharpesttoolintheshedon section 80 he had mastered that way of rapping, if you go back his mixtapes B4 section 80 you will hear he was trying out different things, on section 80 and GKMC he had mastered his unorthodox cadance
