Hello Jeff, I have Piwis 3 version 40.750 and can’t find how to eliminate the fault warning light of PADM. It only shows manual coding option. Not manual coding without MCR Rules
I've not used a PIWIS 3 before, so I don't know exactly. But in the PIWIS 2 you need to be in development mode to get access to what you want. This is different to the 'After sales' mode, which is the normal mode that is used in the dealership.
Had a nice run with my 986 and then bought the 981 when I heard next model would have a 4-cylinder turbo engine. I'm overdue for an oil change but only put 2k miles in the last 2 years. I know it should be changed yearly. It looks straight forward, but unfortunately I'm in a condo with underground garage.
Thanks for posting this. I've been looking at a car with a clutch cooler oring leak so useful to see how much work that might be.
That's great to know. Thanks for sharing!
Hello, could you make a video about how to remove and install the fuel vapor evaporator charcoal canister?
Just a note of thanks for all this. I just bought a 2014 Cayman S with a misaligned driver's door window. I copied your tool design, got the window sitting properly, and now no more wind noise. Missing magnets in inner door handles is next. I had a post delivery inspection at the dealer and they saw the open circuit for both handles.
there's a 3rd o ring hidden inside once u open it 6:44
Can you just use a usb to obd2 port. Or do you need an adapter program
Jeff, well done, good sound, good video, very ood explaination. Rebuilding my 4th Porsche 987/981. all is well except for PDK on 2010 CS. I rebuilt engine and replaced front input shaft sealon PDK, did refill process and have no trans function. Would you help me with codes. Glad to pay you for your services. Randy in Illinois, USA
Hello Randy, will help if I can. Can you email me on the channel address: jjrichar12@gmail.com Thanks
Hello, does anybody been having trouble with pdk when rpms are fluctuating around 100rpm while locked in gears 1,3,5,7? It happens only while cruising on highway at lower rpms between 1-2k. If you drive car hard, clutch does not slip at all. Any solutions?
This has been reported on a few occasions and has been fixed by replacing the valve body. Not saying this is definitely the cause, but simply what was reported to have fixed the issue. Seems to be a pressure control issue with the clutch. When cruising the clutch is only sent enough pressure to keep it clamped, and when you drive hard it sends more pressure. Seems to be wear in the pressure control part for the clutch that is having difficulty in controlling the pressure accurately.
Thank you for doing this. It was very well explained. I had a 2017 Macan S that had to have its "valve body" replaced. Now I know a bit of what that is and why it was so costly.
As a 911 and Cayman owner and former automotive project systems engineer I am content with both cars . They have different character , power and track behavior. I don’t consider them interchangeable as the videographer suggests. Porsche should be commended for their ability to develop cars with so many common parts and manufacturing systems. But it is also unremarkable in the industry. Many manufacturers do this. Pickup trucks and SUVs on the same platform with vastly different pricing is common across US and Japanese manufacturers. So while I can appreciate the effort the author put into this video, he is simply illuminating us on a practice you can find in just about every major car company . Take a look at how many different Hondas come out of the Alabama factory for example. Should I be ashamed to own a Ridgeline because it is loaded with Odyssey minivan parts? No
how many times do you reuse the rubber screw? mine collapsed onto itself and leaked coolant out everywhere
I don't know how many times I've reused it on my project car. Maybe 20 times so far. Not overtightening is the key I find. Just gently tighten and let the o ring do the work.
It’s more like the top trim boxster / cayman is similar to a bottom trim 911
How many pieces broke in this reassembly? What a nightmare to put back together. Amazing work. You’re a master !
Not a thing. Porsches are engineered to be dead easy to pull apart and assemble.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy Compared to VW and Audi where everything breaks apart and Mercedes where everything is a literal nightmare in over engineering duplicity. Wished my first car was a Porsche because I wouldn’t have gotten the 6 year repair warranty on the 981 and would have done everything myself. The intimidation factor and oversell makes me not only not drive it after 2 years (625 miles on it) but also makes me let the dealer do the $1,200 oil change every year (paid for in the warranty). Porsche needs to do a better job of not making customers think these are precious jewels but more like American cars which we can tinker with and do everything ourselves with…(and drive into the ground like in the 70’s.). What a bum loss, now that her OCD kicked in, to not even drive it to keep the resale value WELL ABOVE original MSRP. Makes me wanting to get a junk used 981 as a hobby car and flip the pristine one I bought new. PS. I’m selling my new GT4. [Should have got the crappy used older slower Spyder instead. For me, it’s all about the tinkering and ‘ownership’, becoming one with ‘your’ machine.]
@@ace7821 Yes, it was probably the biggest surprise to me after buying the car. I'd owned one Audi previously and swore I'd never own another as it was so bad to work on, and an under-engineered piece of junk. Very surprised that a brand from the same car group could be so different, but it is. Super reliable, made to be pulled apart and reassembled over and over so it's 100% afterwards, and dead easy to work on. It's a shame all cars aren't made like this, but I guess that's what you are paying for. People think they are buying performance, but much of what you pay for is this unknown stuff.
I’ve never understood why people buy the standard clutch on these cars versus PDK, which is superior.
Thank you very much for the nice video. Theoretically it should be possible to change the air manifold in order to feed the engine better. If cam shafts are designed in the same way and fuel injectors are alike as well, one only needs to reprogram the ECU afterwards and get the same engine performance as that of a 911. Am I missing something?
Richard, thanks for this video. Could you please provide a recommended supplier for the distance sensor?
Can you contact me on the channel email and I'll pass some details. jjrichar12@gmail.com
Hi Jeff, I've always wanted a manual Cayman, but there's barely any available here in Dubai. The only thing keeping me away from the boxster is the soft top. I just wanted to ask you, if it's difficult to take care of? As I live in Dubai, where the summers are extreme and long, I just wanted to know if they get brittle over time? Thanks.
The Boxster roof is capable of dealing with heat and sun better than other convertible roofs from what I've seen. But having lived in the middle east for a few years, I'm familiar with the climate, and if parked regularly in the sun it's going to be hard on the roof.
Thank you! excellent tutorial. My E46 325i 240K miles is having issues on high acceleration shifting from first to second gear, and if the RPMs go above 4k the car goes on limp mode. The rest of the shifting is perfect. ATF and filter changed every 100K miles at a local BMW dealer. Do you think assuming it is the same transmission that upgrading the pressure regulator valve could help?
Yes, I would always recommend changing the main pressure regulator valve. Whilst I've changed the entire lower front valve body, I've also used the Transgo valve and it works very well for less work and lower cost.
Are n't the parts also expensive? 14:14
Hello, Have u tried to drop the engine? is it doable solo?
No, I haven't tried. Can't see why you couldn't do it by yourself as long as you have the correct kit.
Hi. Can you provide a link of where to purchase this sensor?
Contact me at the channel email address and I can pass some info: jjrichar12@gmail.com
Do you have the torque specs for the bolts to secure the diff cover?
6 Nm and replace the screws.
You are Amazing! Is any chance you have measured mount point distances one from each other, relative to the rear axle, please?
Great video but I’m surprised this is a surprise to anyone.
It might be best to press pause 😂
Hi Master Jeff :) I'm looking for the 997.2 calibration without part replacement process. I have piwis 2 in simulation mode set to V. When I go Diagnostic [997] > Overview [PDK/Tiptronic] > Maintenance Repairs, 997 the calibration does not have any options, but if I start with 981 I have the same screen and options as you show. Is it just because I'm in simulation mode? Will it show up once I connect to the vehicle? (vehicle is not with me) Thanks
Yes, it's because you are in sim mode.
@@jeffrichardsoncardiy Thank you kindly! And huge thanks again for all your information sharing on these cars.
I was looking at a low milage 2014 911 C4S , a beautiful car. After a test drive I was about to hand over my cash when I spotted a 2016 Cayman gts. I had time ,so decided to take it for a spin. Never looked back. The Cayman GTS was so much nicer to drive in real world conditions, and was $40k cheaper, and sounded so much better, especially with the sports exhaust engaged . Maintenance costs have been minimal, approx $800 (nz$) per year. The 911 is a truly wonderful car, but my GTS is a keeper
Absolutely genius breakdown. Cutting through all the fluff and letting the facts speak for themselves
Enjoyed that mate 👍
This is the most clear, thorough and yet somehow concise diy video on this topic out there, and possibly the best diy video I have ever watched. I followed this guide step by step and did not run into any issues. The final product was flawless. Thank you so much Jeff
Happy to help. Great you got a good result.
Thanks for the great info! I need to fix a few coding issues on my 997.2 and this should be a big help!
Like many other posters unable to get the glue in my state. How were you able to determine this 3M product was the one to use?
I did a bunch of research on different glues, then bought it and did some testing to see how well it worked.
Porsche is my dream car. In Thailand, it quite expensive event the second hand one. Anyway, I plan to get one and will use it fr daily use and visit all province in Thailand.
Should the solenoids be cleaned when performing a pdk clutch fluid replacement? Thanks!
No. The valve body needs to be dropped to remove a solenoid, and unless something very bizarre has happened, the solenoids should remain perfectly clean.
What would be the symptoms of a bad valve body. I’m experiencing rpm blips when cruising in us city roads. 2k rpm, 40 miles an hour
An absolutely fantastic video. Thanks for making and sharing this info. ❤👌🏼
Excellent explanation! The best I have seen so far. Thank you very much for this video. I have a question about the PDK gear selection: there is a clunk sound when the transmission go from 2 to 1. Usually noticeable when car just starts up. What is that clunk sound, if the first gear is pre-selected when the car is slowing down to stop? Thank you again.
I don't know exactly. It's something people talk about a lot, but not something I've been able to nail down.
@@jeffrichardsoncardiy Appreciated. Thank you!
Extremely helpful. Cheers!
Man, you are one helluva talented person. Mind-blowingly so.
Had to subscribe after watching this video.

Amazing deep dive. Great content,
This has been a goldmine. Thank you so much!
At 1:32 you mention "park brake cable" but I think it's the transmission shift cable.
It's the park lock cable. It simply unlocks the rear of the transmission so the wheels can move.
@@jeffrichardsoncardiyInteresting. On my 987.2 PDK, I had to reach down under the car and manually move this lever towards the front of the car to get the shift knob unstuck from manual mode.
Hello sir How are you Very helpful information thanks I have caymen 2014 i replaced it with new sensor from T-Design The problem during the calibration of the sensor distance it will stop once reaching 95% And have. cancellation condition: synchronise position controing to neutral not possible Can you help me what does that mean and what is your thoughts about it I'll appreciate it
This means the sensor is giving a poor response in the central region where the synchromesh is being engaged. The sensor needs replacing.
Hello, thanks for your time The T-Design sent me another distance sensor and is still the same problem Once reaching 95% it will cancelled
.
@@justme3461 I get a few people complaining of this issue from T design sensors. Like I said, the output from the sensor is poor in the central region and as a result it won't calibrate. I'm not trying to do a hard sell, but this is one of the things we worked hard at when designing our new sensor. We deliberately made a sensor specific for the 911 and another for the Boxster/Cayman so we could achieve the best responses and eliminate problems like this. How many calibration attempts did you try. If it's right on the edge of the limits of passing/failing, then attempting a few more can't hurt. But if you have attempted a few calibrations and it fails each time, then any more is a waste of time.
Thanks Jeff. A brilliant presentation.
Bravo! I appreciate the explanation of why this occurs.
Great video! Personally it’s not shocking but i do appreciate the value of the data/proof/explanation. 911/cayman is not really different than 2dr vs 4dr on other chassis. I know many parts of my m3 are no different than a m4, 330i or even 318/etc. Even my s2000 has some civic/accord parts. That’s how it is. Really these things are good it (theoretically) allows cheaper replacement parts and better parts through shared development costs. With many s2000 parts no longer available, I really appreciate the shared parts availability.
