In the Art Studio: What I've Been Up to from 11/8/24 to 12/4/24; mixed media art and gel prints
This is another art update showing you what I've been up to from November 8, 2024, to December 4, 2024. This presentation covers a 3 week period (as opposed to my typical 10-14 day period). I explain the delay as well as the artwork that was produced during this period, much of it influenced by my emotions and life circumstances. I created mixed media collages, oil pastel drawings, art centered on thankfulness, a large prophetic painting that I painted live at a worship event, self-care art, emotional landscape art, art in response to a art challenge for collage called "Trovember," and numerous grungy, textured gel prints. Come see what I made and hear about my life as an artist and how l...

      Yes. You could try embossing them, you can use them as journal pages, journal tags or book marks, journal pockets, use pieces of it for a collage, make a little purse out of it ( I saw one tutorial somewhere on youtube.) You could make a lampshade. You could sew into it and make a patchwork piece of art, or embroider into it (especially if you used konnyaku starch for the momigami process.) The Japanese made clothing out of it and lanterns.

    Do you iron the paper when you’re done? I’ve seen it done but I’m on the fence about it as I would be afraid to smash all that gorgeous texture. I’m waiting for the magic ingredient so I can get started😊. Thank you for this video.

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 29 дней назад

      Thank you for that response. I have ironed my momigami papers before, but typically I don't. You do lose some textured, but you end up with a flat, crisp paper. It depends on what your needs are and what you're going to use it for whether or not if you're going to iron it. If you're selling the paper, then I think most people prefer to get it that way, but if it's just for you than why bother?

    Have you tried ironing your paper to the waxy side of freezer paper? I don’t know if it would make folding different but it works well. It’s how I used to print fabric for art dolls and things. Thank you for sharing this. It’s very interesting.

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 2 месяца назад

      No. I have not tried this. Thanks for the suggestion. So you iron the freezer paper first? Does it adhere to the paper?

    • @KellyBellcambridgegiftsbykelly
      @KellyBellcambridgegiftsbykelly 2 месяца назад

      @@creativepassages Just cut the freezer paper to the size of your paper you're going to print. Put the paper on the waxy side (together) iron over the paper you're printing - and the waxy part of the freezer paper will hold the paper in place and you can then run them through the printer as one piece. Together it's strong enough to run in without buckling. I hope that helps. If after printing you feel it leaves too much wax on the rice paper or whatever paper you use - just put a cloth over the rice paper and iron again and the residue will come off onto the cloth.

      Thank you for reaching out. It meant so much to me. I'm sorry you've been through what you've been through too, but connecting together does bring comfort; hopefully, it does for you. It's tricky trying to teach how to cope with trauma through art while also modeling that with my own art making, because it leaves me more vulnerable...and I looked I don't see anybody else doing it...so I'm so thankful and appreciative that it is helping you explore your feelings in new ways and express yourself in new ways...ir makes it all worth it! About the throw away art

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 2 месяца назад

      Sorry...it posted before I was done...about the throw away art...there's something deeply compelling to me about using scraps, throw aways, or "reject art" in new or useful ways because there's a message in that. Things can be reinvented and recreated in new beautiful, meaningful ways...theres hidden value....it coukd even be hidden in the ugliest of things or circumstances. I imagine that's what God does with our lives...reinvent them and makes the ugly things beautiful in time. I hope to indirectly communicate that to the teens. I'm glad you related to the " one day things will just come together"- it makes it easier to hope for that and helps knowing I'm not alone in feeling that way. I'm glad to you related to the dabbling in many things. Thank you for receiving the love. Have a great day!!

    Q: i tried this with hand cream but it was murder on my hands. Does this soften the paper so its not so brutal?

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 5 месяцев назад

      The lotion does soften the papers, but if the lotion gets the paper too wet, the paper will rip easily and fall apart. Lotions or oils may change the color or texture, too. What is the best thing to make it easier for your hands? Honestly, it's by adding the konnyaku starch made by directions (mix 30 minutes followed by 4 hours of sitting to let the crystals dissolve). I haven't tried mixing for less time and letting it sit for 4 hours at the same time, but one person told me that it does still work. One person told me she mixed it in a blender (save your hands some work), then let it sit 4-5 hours, which is best in a fridge, or used distilled water to preserve it longer. It might last a week or half a week. It is sensitive to temperature. My fridge got too cold once, and it stuck in one part. I found that momigamming the paper while it's damp is SO MUCH easier on my hands and much quicker once you get to the momigami process. You can almost crumple and ball it up immediately and let it sit. I could not do this without my papers sticking unless I mixed the full 30 minutes, followed by letting it dry afterward for 4 hours. So experiment and try things out, but I'm telling you it feels amazing and smooth to your hands, and it's so much less work once you get through the initial hump of making the konnyaku starch.Its so worth it, and not only that but the konnyaku starch provides extra strength and durability so your papers don't rip as easily and can even be sewn on!!

    I tried this a few months ago, using a heavier image/photo from a Vogue magazine. The photograph kind of fell apart when I was done. It looked like a very faded mosaic and had a crumb-like feel on the surface. I used olive oil. I haven't found anyone who has any thoughts about why it happened. I speculated that the quality of the paper high-end magazines like this use and the way the photos are printed on the paper made it less amenable to this technique. Any thoughts?

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 5 месяцев назад

      Hmmm. I do know many people like the look of momigami magazines, but the new look of it after the momigami process is quite different, worn, and faded. The momigami process usually distorts what's on there...fades it, makes it lighter, cracks it up, changes the texture to more like a tissue or fabric, makes it crumbly, etc. It shrinks ir, too. I know olive oil will also change the color and texture, usually making it darker. I personally do not like the look of the oils or the lotions when they're been used for momigami, and find that they cause the paper to rip more easily and darken it. Perhaps your disappointment has to do with your expectations and what your plan was to do with those papers afterward. I recommend trying it dry without any lotions and trying a variety of different papers and even that same magazine again dry. Try konnyaku starch. I have another video about that: ruclips.net/video/P2uDsamJ1R8/видео.htmlsi=2t4yQ4z4JjcBX02C Figure out what you like and what works best for your needs. Most of my needs are for abstract, grungy, or faded things, which might allow me to express my trauma and work through it. I personally think the cracks in the magazine and the contrast of lights and darks are very interesting. I don't mind the crumbly textures. If you do not like the final result you could consider rubbing paint or a glaze over the momigamied magazine paper and let the liquid fill in the cracks (this is a cool effect) or maybe even try spraying it with distress sprays or inks. You could try laying that magazine on top of a stencil and then using a light sandpaper - that pattern should show up. Or you could you try adding some Plaster of Paris mixed with gel medium and gesso to certain portions of your momigamied magazine pieces or put this through a stencil, lace or doily...or stitch different momigami pieces together with glue or threads and do these things. Then add more color to it when it's dry. I really love collage with momigami pieces. Try looking up Aimee Bishop. She had cool ideas about this. There's always more steps you can take to fix something that you don't like or make it beautiful again. Here's a blog post I made giving instructions about this stitched, altered, and distressed magazine pieces in that style. It didn't include momigami, but I noted that I wanted to try this with momigami pieces: wp.me/pcRhQ1-Nb Let me know what your thoughts are.

      @@creativepassages Wow! Thank you for actually taking the time to give this some thought and provide a reply. The funny thing is, I used to do this with scraps of notebook paper when I was in middle school - and didn't use any kind of oil, lotion, etc. Just the paper and whatever oils were leached from my hands. I always thought the clothlike feel was cool, but never really contemplated what (if anything) one might do with such a material. So, here I am (almost 60 years later) seeing videos of a technique that I didn't know had a specific name and cultural history! I was aware that the images would fade, but beyond that, I don't think I had any real expectations. What I didn't expect was the crackled look and feel that was nothing like cloth when I was finished. I'll have to give this another try without using a softener to see how that holds up and see where I end up. I'll take a look at your other suggestions, too. Thanks again!

    You need to tell people what kind of paper because I tried to use magazine pages and it rips very easily. You can’t fold it without ripping it. You can’t crinkle it or crumpled it. It will rip. And that is with lotion. The paper is just too thin, so what paper do you use?

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 5 месяцев назад

      Any paper you can fold can be momigammied. It could be the lotion that's causing the problem. I haven't been able to use it without it ripping. Dry it dry. I have another video on using konnyaku Starch. Perhaps you're using too much lotion because others have used it successfully. Also, you have to start the momigami process slowly. Start by folding in the corners and gradually making creases various places. You can't start scrunching and crumbling it right away. I spend 10 minutes just making folds back and forth before crumbling. Also, don't force a fold if it's resistant because that is where it usually rips. Let me know if this helps.

      From the tutorials I’ve been watching, the best is to use glossy magazine pages. It takes a lot of folding to break down the fibres but the paper looks really cool in the end. It changes the picture to more of an abstract look and the chances of the paper ripping are less. That woman also used hand cream and said to use less than a tbsp, only on the front side and work it in really well. I think she said she wiper,Ed the paper for 7-10 minutes.

      @@creativepassages I mixed it until all the particles dissolved -- which wasn't more than five minutes (or so). If your blender has an opening at the top you can drop the powder in little by little. I momigamied it damp-ish (not too damp). Some people momigami without any starch or oil/lotion, and they say it works for them. I think the starch does add strength. I would not use oil because it will end up eating through the paper with time, which is why we can't use oil paint on canvas or paper surfaces that have not been sized beforehand. • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 5 месяцев назад

      @Rocdag well you only apply the konnyaku starch once to both sides separately, as I explained above. You can momigami it as much as you like- no limits. The traditional Japanese method involved being momigamied for 20 minutes. There's no rule that you have to go that long. Also, you'll know that the paper is completely momigamied when it's very soft like cloth, and you no longer hear a crunch when you fold. It will shrink a lot and feel like fabric. Thin or normal paper feels like kleenex. The konnyaku starch just makes it stronger and more durable, easier to be sewed on. Also, it's no crime to momigami your paper after it has dried completely. You will still get nice results. You will find that it is easier on your hands if it is slightly wet with the konnyaku starch. I hope that helps. Thank you for saying that I have a teachers heart. God bless.

    • @creativepassages
      @creativepassages 5 месяцев назад

      Also, I want to add that if it's thin paper and the konnyaku starch soaks through to the other side, you would only need to do one side.
