If you go to bed early on Friday for an early start for a wilderness hike on Saturday this channel is for you. If you have owned more than 3 pairs of hiking boots in your life time this channel is for you. If tired legs mean a satisfying day this channel is for you. If carrying a 30 pound pack for a weekend wilderness outing is more appealing than flying to Las Vegas, this channel is for you.
I have always chosen the outdoors over indoors my entire life. I frown on going to Hawaii knowing that I have not explored every square mile of a local wilderness area. When I was young I made mistakes and as I have gotten older I have not forgotten where I have been. Don't get me wrong, I still make mistakes, but not as frequently as when I was a 30 year old. Now in my 50's I hope my experiences will help people enjoy the wilderness that I have spent a life time growing to love.

See How Fast I Reverse Raynaud's Syndrome
I found myself in a critical frozen hand situation. I have Raynaud's Syndrome in my hands so this has become a common experience in the wilderness. It could be worse. Due to this I have become acutely aware of when I need to take action. The result has been the development of several methods of warming hands fast. In this video I show you how I got a hand warming fire going very fast. With the right gear and mindset anyone is capable of doing this.

Building A Roaring Campfire With Zippo's Camp Fire Building Kit

I found a kit from Zippo specifically for building a wilderness campfire. Being DoWilderness's motto is, "Always be prepared to build a campfire", I did not hesitate for a second and bought it for a wilderness field test. And that I did deep in the Mount Hood Wilderness. Besides the typical this and thats in the box, I give some fire building tips, lumber jack a small cedar with my knife and en...

You do what you want to do with your knives, thats fine. But Im not entirely sure this is the best advice to give others. Especially the reprofiling parts, if I held a knife in contact with a bench grinder that long it would be so hot I couldnt hold on to the spine of it. Thats either dangerously close to or way above the temperature needed to mess with the temper of the blade which can happen as low as 200C (392 eagle units). Same with taking an angle grinder or 2" belt sander to it, it can be done but it should be done very carefully with a bucket of water next to it to dip it into maybe every 5 seconds or so depending on how aggressive it is. If you want to use a pullthrough sharpener or an electric one like you showed, thats fine too. But if this is not something you really feel a need to do yourself and you dont have the patience to learn the skill properly, I think its better advice for others to just have a professional do it for 8-12 bucks instead of going through all this. Nothing against you or your choices though, Im really not trying to be harsh. I just dont think this is good advice to put out there for others.
@@kvernesdotten very diplomatic. Good on you.
Knife never gets hot
Yikes.
...Keep an open mind? 😅
I think you should have packed a few cotton balls and Vaseline I know I can get them to go off pretty quickly
That’s definitely a cleaner burn and higher flame than the Vaseline soaked cotton ball. I agree that if you’re going into the pristine wilderness, why would you want to start a fire with a petroleum product that has toxic fumes when burned. Good review.
Camping is one thing. Being in a real survival situation is quite another. If I'm going hypothermic to be frankly honest, Im not worried about any poison , dont breathe it, hold your breath until you put kindling on it. In fact breathing wood smoke isn't great either. So there's that. The reason this tinder burns so well is that there is SOMETHING the tinder has added to it, or its a natural substance that accelerates the process
Thank you for the replies
Thank you for reviewing this product.
❤ great video. a sub from europe mate x
Thank you for your kind positive words.
Pretty cool little fire kit from Zippo. Cheers for the info., and hope you feel better soon.
Thank you for the kind words
You have a keen eye for those old trails my friend. After many years viewing Mt.Hood virtually in MSFS, my old work sent me across from the UK to L.A. and then up the coast over Portland to Seattle when I was lucky enough to see Mt.Hood with my own eyes from the Fokker aircraft. Regrettably, time/work constraints meant I couldn't visit the area properly despite being so close. Maybe one day I'll be able to return to that magical area once again. Thanks for sharing your adventure on the hidden trail.
We would of all froze to death with that setup.
Use a zippo lighter sir, it is weather proof.
Are you drunk?
lol i thought that tree never fall
love the video, ignore the other comments 👍
Thanks, will do!
Are you ok?
dang dude u wore me out watching u strike the rod. next time ruffle up tender bundle put on a rock or hard surface put rod in at a slant touching hard surface then strike downwards a few times will work everytime and wont wear ya out
I have used cotton and Vaseline for 30 years and by habbit expected a 5 strike light.Check out my other fire building videos. Ya I had a mind fart thanks for the input.
@@dowilderness4545 understandable but even with cotton and Vaseline u cud still put sum shaving on product then get right deep in it and 1 strike u got fire trying to help u out man no disrespect at all love your vid
As the other guy said, you gotta break it up Way more. And whats up with the breathing man
I have used cotton and Vaseline for 30 years and by habbit expected a 5 strike light.Check out my other fire building videos. Ya I had a mind fart thanks for the input.
No better feeling 👌🏼😍
Next time read the instructions so you know what you are doing! Chisel tip is used to make a small pile of fero rod shavings so a spark will ignite them. You obviously are a drugstore cowboy. Any outdoors man worth his salt would have pre shaved the cedar strips, spread the tinder into a nest, scraped a pile of fero shavings in the center and had the bundle ignited in < 30 seconds. You need to take the word “wilderness” out of your channel name and substitute bewildered. This performance of fire making was pathetic. DON’t quit your day job!
Glad to see this review. You did a great job. A few notes: You have to break that tinder apart a LOT more than what you did. It should be in a loose pile. It actually tells you this in the directions. Also why do you sound like you are gasping for breath in every shot? I understand your age and health. But what I am really asking is who is doing your audio? This should not be getting picked up in the video. It's off putting because the microphone is amplifying it.
Audio is a bitch i use a jobe wireless mic have any sugestions
@@dowilderness4545 Do you edit yourself or have an editor? You could have him cut out the portions of audio where you aren't talking on your clip on mic. Use the camera audio (with a wind screen and external shotgun mic depending on your camera type) for the background noise and your clip on mic will work like a live voice over mic. That way you cannot hear anything coming from yourself when you aren't speaking, yet when you are talking you still get that nice audio. There are also ways you can just edit this out in post depending on the program you use. I'm not an expert myself but this is the approach I would try to take. Separate audio tracks for you and for background noise. Then cut the portions of audio with heavy breathing and such.
Thanks for the tip I edit myself so constantly wanting tips.
Shred the tinder up into a birds nest type shape, and it will light a lot quicker next time.

Love this video. What a pretty falls.
Absolutely no need for snow shoes, especially since your right of the road. 🤡
4 miles from hwy 26 via trail, as a crow flies sure next to hwy 26. About 2 miles as a crow flies. Snow shoes help you by stabilizing on hard pack snow. Also you have holes that snow shoes protect you from. Thanks for your coment.😊
Lots of heavy breathing.
I did over 20 miles in the 10 inch Mountain Extremes, and my feet were not tired. I was able to do it the next day all over again. These "hunting boots" are superior to commercial hiking boots. They are what hiking boots should be.
Ye pretty cool and kind and compassionate sir To help an innocent creature They have limited ranges of travel because they use a bit of mucus, depending on the territory
It’d be nice to enjoy the snail and not overly loud dance music. Other than that nice vid

great tips! THanks Darin!
Thank you for your video. I’ve watched several on this particular lighter. I will be purchasing several as I feel they are a good addition to any Go bag for those certain emergencies that can arise. But I have a few other fire starting items in redundancy.
Did you WATCH the video?? Because if you did, you would know the lighter is a non-functioning POS.
Watching you abuse a tool that could potentially save your life by beating on it with a rock stone was a cause for dismay. You know better, and younger viewers might be misled into thinking your actions are acceptable. One suggestion would be to take this video down, restage it, and then reshot the demonstration. Could you highlight that you're using vaseline-impregnated cotton balls to catch the sparks so everyone understands how to get a good flame without tender?
My knife is not hurt by a rock
What did you use to make the spark take fire so quick?
from the description it says cotton and Vaseline but, there are many versions of cotton and I would recommend Dryer Lint if you have access to it
I use cotton and vasoline. Please watch my video on how to make it.
