I want to know the ratio. If my beer is 20 liters, how much mangoes or zest I need. Besides, when do I add the mangoes or zest?
It all depends on how much flavor you want in the beer. For fruited sour beers I use about 1 pound per gallon, or 0.5kg per 2.2 liters metric. You add those after fermentation preferably in a secondary vessel. For zest it matters what fruit you are using. Limes use way less, but for oranges it would be about 30 grams in the fermenter post fermentation or late boil.
finally a practical explanation of Brewer's friend!
I’m just very confused on the quantities of the ingredients, I have all my equipment and I’m ready to brew my first BIAB beer, I would like to do a pale ale smash I just don’t know how to come up with the amount of grain I need nor hops
Do you use an app like brewers friend or beer smith? This will help you figure out the right amounts for the style. When selecting the style, it shows if the ABV and SRM(color), etc. is within the correct range for that style. Typically for a smash pale ale, 9-10 lbs of grains is sufficient for a 5 gallon batch, but hops will depend on the variety you are using since all have different amounts of alpha acids. You can also just search smash recipes for the hops and grains you are using and do that for your first batch.
@ I’ve heard of them but haven’t picked one yet, is there one you recommend?
It doesn't matter the app, but I use brewer's friend. A lot of what I show on my videos and live streams are using that website, but all of them have their pros and cons.
@ I appreciate it yeah, after watching this video, I decided to do that clone of the Sierra Nevada for my first beer
I watch all your vids and get lots of valuable insight into brewing. Please though, I come to hear you, not tunes! The persistent background tune is entirely unnecessary to your wonderful content and is like trying to listen to someone while a kid is beating a tin pan in the room.
I was thinking of doing four more beers in January, I think i'm going to settle for two NEIPAs and two lagers.. got some: [First Gold] and [Evergreen] hop pellets for dirt cheap.. what do you think about, how much pellets should I drop into 25-30 litre batches, so it doesn't go too bitter...? Lager less, obivously.. Have never used pellets before..
It isn't so much as the quantity, but more about when you add them. For NEIPAs you want to do at the very end of the boil or even after during fermentation (high Krausen). Adding them early adds bitterness so that's why you want to add them very late boil or at flameout for less bitterness 20-25 IBU. For that volume I would add 6- 10 oz total between boil/flameout and dry hopping.
@@CityscapeBrewing Yeah dry hopping for sure.
What I learned: I cannot get into homebrewing. I can't enjoy a homebrew while I brew, so I can never make my first batch.
Haha ... But once you do... There's no going back. Have a homebrew. 🤘🍻
Thanks for that. It is amazing the lengths we go for clean fermentation. How about you filming making some of these different styles. bock, pils, ect.
I do have a German pils video I did this year, but I have plans for a Czech pilsner and Hefe from Weinstephen too! Stay tuned. 🤘🍻
When you did your dry hoping for this IPA did you drop temp then dry hop or just dry hop at fermentation temps?
Fermentation temp is typically what I do.
Ur better then the guys I brought my kegerator off. They told me JACK SHIT and only said u over carbed it. I wish I watched this on Xmas day was drinking heady beer and just had to wait like a Guinness to let it settle back down... and straight after viewing this went and fixed the problem
Haha glad to help!
Very timely. I had a heck of a time milling my grains last batch. Thank you!
Personally, i think washing that yeast is overkill. That trub is dead yeast, but also strong (stronger than before) bilions of alive yeast, alive yeast uses dead yeast as a nutrients, so in europe we always just take that trub, and we make really strong beer using that, or sometimes if we make lighter beer, we just add few spoons to wort, It pretty much always start with no trouble.
Yep, I usually reuse the whole trub as well. I wanted to show the washing portion for those that want to use it for a very different beer style
@@CityscapeBrewing 1 thing i see people not talking about in US made beer videos, is that they do not talk about yeast being stronger, after they fermented something, and its not accually the same as starter. Sadly i see most of videos talking about trub, as mostly useless mess, than big big colony of way more stronger yeast strain.
@dodobird4155 agreed
Nice !!!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is a great video. Thank you!
Thanks for creating this video. I started a thread on BeerAdvocate which includes an embed of your video. Hopefully this will increase hits. Na Zdravi
Thanks man!! 🍻
Very interesting they open top ferment, quite crazy what you said about us home brewers wanting to keep everything sealed and contained when they ferment like that. Great Video
Yeah this was common a long time ago but not as common today... It is really neat to see that in person and it surprised me a lot.
That trip seems like it was a lot of fun. Great video
This was definitely a highlight! Awesome place to visit! 🍻
You know you're watching a real red-blooded American when he says, "just a couple drops" and proceeds to put at least a dozen in there. Enjoyed this one a lot, thanks!
😂
Sorry I missed it Dennis. Busy time of year for me. Congrats to all !
i can never catch it in the videol haha but for the escorbic acid do you add it in the main mash or... i rewatched the video again and i seen the escorbic acid addition. i guess lagering a beer for so long its a good idea.
I add 4 g of ascorbic acid in the mash, after stirring in the grains, for most beers. It helps preservation and prevents oxidation. Does it matter if it's a lager or ale, but very important for a certain styles like hazy IPAs and West Coast IPAs that are very hoppy.
@@CityscapeBrewing ok thank you. ill remember that. and yes i know about the hoppy ipa. ive done a few and more then enough times they get oxidized and brown. once i made an ipa and when it was time to drink i opened it up just to smell dead rotting fruit smell it was bad!!
well im off soon to making another pilsner. the long journey of waiting ive got some extras stashed in the freezer i need to use. weyermann pilsner malt and weyermann floor malted and a dash and a half of that. using magnum, hallertau, and spalt. never used spalt before so here goes nothing! also 34/70 the first time ever using it.
Love 34/70 yeast. It's a beast and does a great job. Sounds like a good recipe to me! Let me know how it turns out! 🍻
@@CityscapeBrewing will do! give me a few months hahah. my mexican lager i recently made will be ready friday.
Here are a few suggestions. I would used a large empty coffee can/ plastic type. And use a step drill , to drill out the hole. You may even drill out some of the holes in the screen if it's running a little slow for you. But over all you did a great job. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I have the spring in my faucet and all I get is foam with the spring in if I take the spring out, I don’t get any foam why?.
I am not sure... All I can think of is that you might not have it tightened down all the way because you only get foam when it's getting air or over pressured. I use about 10 ft of serving line in order to slow the beer down and prevent foam, but that is for any faucet, spring or not.
Your videos will help a lot of people thank you Btw. What you call vorloff is actually a German word and is Vorlauf meaning forerun. Chem: bei Destillation) forerun
I have a eleven gram package of dry Kveik, Lutra that I'd like to do a starter with as to get more yeast from. What's your thoughts on this? Thanks, Jim
Kveik Yeast is one that you don't need to worry about making a starter for as much. It actually likes being underpitched to give some more desirable flavors. Most yeast strains give negative or undesirable off flavors, but kveik Yeast is the exception. Some people even pitch low on purpose.
How about freezing?
I have not done that, but brulosophy did a video on that a while ago. I should try that soon.
Did you struggle with that gas one brew kettle? Mine arrived this week and I cannot fix a leak coming from the connections.
No I haven't had an issue. The important thing is to put the washers in the correct places, and use Teflon tape on the threads to stop any leaks. The white silicone washer on the inside of the kettle and red one on the outside.
@CityscapeBrewing Thanks for the quick response. I love your channel as I am brand new to home brewing. I wanted to give a quick update. My model came with a very short strand of Teflon tape so I definitely realize now that I did a very poor job of wrapping, probably only one time around and not covering it completely. Today I went to a hardware store and got more Teflon tape (99¢) and I gave it a much better job wrapping probably going around 6 times and fully covered. This completely fixed my leakage. In case anyone has the same issue.
@BigAl2918 awesome. Glad you got it fixed! 🍻🤘
If there already is a one-way check valve, do i still need the co2 captured ballon. When it Suck Back the valve will stop any fluid or oxygen coming through. No offend buddy i just want to stick with the cheapest gear. Cheers mate.
Good question but no, because when you take off the tubing, or go to transfer it, it will suck oxygen into the tank because of the reverse pressure. The bag keeps the pressure even.
Thank you great infomation. One more question that is i normally use blow-off tube and when bottling i dont take off the tube but fill it with a little sanitizer, allow a bit oxygen being suck in to let beer flow out the spigot (basic pressure stuff). So its my first time using these coldcrashguardian, would i remove this setup and connect the normal tubing when transfer?
@milkcoffee4124 yes you can but won't have the suck back, so minimum oxygen getting in with the quick change
You are a godsend and saved my beer!. The video was simple and easy to follow worked exactly as you said. Thank you 🤙🏽 from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Sweet! 👍 🍻
Have a question. I cold crash in the keg, it has always worked good for me . I have always hooked up the CO2 when cold crashing. Is the ok or should I wait till after CC to apply CO2.
That is totally fine just the way you do it.
Sounds to me like you need another keezer
Hate that I keep missing the lives. Brewed your base porter recipe from your vanilla porter. Delicious!
if you wanted to start a yeast bank, what starter size would you step up from here after your 1000ml has fermented through? Is there a specific formula or do you just rinse and repeat the 1000ml starter process to multiply more yeast?
If you have a large enough eldermeyer flask then you could ramp up to 2-3L from there. I haven't had a need to go larger for a 5 gallon batch, and I don't have any yeast stored, but I imagine a 2L starter would make about 8-10 Yeast banks you could use to make new starters in the future.
@ thank you!
Nope 👎
What’s Happening? Sorry about the turkey.
