Introduction to my journey with Slipping Rib Syndrome vlog
Will this be every year?
💯
How is this supposed to affect the kidney. Is it the 11th rib that protects our kidney, or are you just saying the ribs may poke on the kidney when removed. I have a thoracic MRI but I am not sure if this would show the ribs clearly
Yes the 11th ribs protect the kidneys - if they removed the 11th rib, there would be a sharp "stump" right next to it, which can puncture the kidney - this is why 11th ribs tend to be resected (just a bit taken off at the tip to keep the new rib tip well away from the kidneys, as opposed to being excised (removed). worth noting too, that this condition can feel like kidney pain (I've had kidney stones and the pain feels very similar - when I first had symptoms of this, the dr and I thought it must be stones again). X ray can show it but 3D CT would show it more clearly.
Is it possible that the disarticulation causes shortness of breath, dizziness, dry eyes etc. especially when i lay flat on the bed where the pain is? I am thinking there might be a tension created that is affecting the spinal cord or it’s fluid
I'm not sure about this - breathing (especially deeply) if the rib is in a bad position can certainly cause pain as the movement from breathing also causes the disarticulated rib to move in a different way to how it would if it were attached. I've not experienced shortness of breath or dry eyes myself, I do get dizziness but I think this is unrelated to my ribs and more to do with hEDS and chronic migraines. You could be right, I don't know enough about this, but as the spinal cord is surrounded by bone i'd guess not - any neuropathic (nerve related) symptoms are usually caused by irritation of the intercostal nerves, which run between the ribs.
Its crazy. I had several scans and the only one that shows the disarticulation of my 11th rib at the spine is a Standing Xray done by my Chiropractor a few years ago.
That makes sense - as I said in the video, when we're lying down gravity isn't affecting us in the same way, and we're not using the muscles we would be using to stand, so it doesn't necessarily give a clear picture of what's going on. I think standing scans for MSK issues should be made more widely available for this reason.
Interesting. What medical background do you have?
Hi Suzanne, I don't have a medical background, i'm just a patient who has read lots of studies in order to advocate for myself, increase awareness and educate medical professionals.
Are you better now?
I relate to your story so much. I have cervical dystonia, my jaw subluxes and dislocates, i have shoulder instability, slipping rib syndrome, bladder and stomach issues. I was diagnosed with hEDS a year ago. However, my previous GP didn't believe me and gaslit me. I changed GPs as i was so traumatised. And haven't seen a GP since as im so scared of the same thing happening. Thankfully i go private for my physio, so i have some help, otherwise i would have no clue that the chest, abdominal snd back pain i get is from SRS. Thank you for sharing your story, as it helps me feel less alone. X
That all sounds so familar! I definitely struggle with trusting doctors now, despite seeing so many of them, but yes GPs are a challenge "If I've never heard of it, it doesn't exist". You're so welcome, wanting people to feel less alone is why I did this :)
Amen
Thank you for this correct and important information!
Thanks for sharing your journey! I believe it is important info for many people.
Sir I've watched you for nearly a yr now and I must say you seem great id love to know how are u now I'm 13 months on and am ok but still get pain sometimes daily I've had a CT scan and it doesn't show the ends of my ribs so I'm having an x-ray tomorrow they won't allow me to have a MRI hopefully I'll find out soon what's wrong the fight for a diagnosis continue s 🙏
You are absolutely right. I also had slipping rib syndrome and had both a resection and had my ribs stitched on and a plate to reattach. Dr Centeno I watched his video and the information on his video should be taken down it is not true. Thank you for doing this video. You are right on all that imaging. I believe he is just trying to get business for himself.
An excellent response I came across this at time of posting and added comments that this information was false and lacking any credibility. Centeno says a suture solution (Hansen technique) I had myself is not necessary and seeks to promote his own injection solution for this and other medical conditions, so I agree he is a quack and cannot be trusted. Needless to say my comments were immediately taken down and I am so glad you took the time to respond. Clearly a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing in the wrong hands. Keep up the good work and your website has been both informative and supportive for this chronic syndrome, the surgical solution for which I have only come to after many years.
Thank you Matt Deary!
Wow, that's really reckless and dangerous misinformation. Thanks for your contribution.
You haven’t uploaded in a while, how has your recovery been. Are you better?
Hello, no i've not uploaded in a while as i have had a lot to deal with and very little time. I've did have surgery on my right side, awaiting surgery on the left. I documented my surgery anf recovery in my videos and also keep a blog at slippingribsyndrome.org. i'll be updating everyone soon, as i'm awaiting the results of my latest scan
Thank you for your story. I believe I have this. How are you now? Did you get surgery?
Wondering how your doing sir I've got srs too thanks for the website 👍 Got injections in a week see how that does if not surgery Sending prayers 🙏
You're welcome. I'm struggling a bit mentally at the moment which is why i've been quiet. I hope it goes well for you.
@@slippingribsyndrome keep your head up mate not forever 👍 👌 Hope you feel better soon champ
Hi there it's me again I hope you are well and everyday gets a little better ,I had an ultrasound scan yesterday with Arden Forest at Tudor physio in Stratford upon Avon ,I don't have slipped rib or slipping rib syndrome thank goodness 🙏 however At the level of the rib/cartilage interface of the 10th rib there is surface contour irregularity and an overlying hypo echoic layer which is in contrast to other adjacent ribs. These appearances could suggest a stress reaction with periosteal oedema, alternatively as this at the Cartilage/rib interface, the differential could be some mild subluxation at the costo-cartilage interface. (Focally tender here). Dynamically there is no suggestion of sliding rib syndrome and no obvious overlying soft tissue lesion. Which is excellent news ,I'm back at work all be it doing less hours ATM but in a couple of weeks I'll try to do my normal hrs and be very careful just wanted to give you an update and let's hope we are both near normal real soon what ever that is 🤗 cheers for listening and I'll still pop by for updates from you soon ,all the best from LeeAnn 😊
Hi I would love if you can send any information to me I think I've have slipping rib syndrome pm and finding it really hard to find anyone to help me I'm from cumbria UK and would love some help.
UK doctors up north would be helpful
Hi Jani, all of the information is at slippingribsyndrome.org and there is a link to a very helpful support group under "support" as well as "Find a specialist". I would recommend Joel Dunning in Middlesbrough
@@slippingribsyndrome thankyou so much your vlogs are very helpful, your doing a great job thankyou again
Hi again cheers for the update sorry after picking your brain again last time promise you mention that you only have one rib slipping on your one side how do you know this ,the drs are still saying it's definitely costochondritis with me and can take up to a year to ease I'm trying to decide my next action 🤔 thinking of a dynamic ultra sound just to ease my mind if nothing else tbh
I can feel mine with my fingers up and behind the rib above when i'm sat or stood, but when i'm lying down it goes back to where it should be. Most people with SRS have had a misdiagnosis of costochondritis as most doctors aren't aware of SRS (costo can be a standalone condition but also a symptom of SRS).
@@slippingribsyndrome thanks ever so much for your reply I'm not very good at feeling around the only reason I'm concerned with a slipped rib is because I didn't think that you could get costochondritis in the lower ribs which I only know that it's my 8 th rib all the way to my back because I paid to see a chiropractor after being told that it wasn't even my ribs that were the problem ,my thoughts are the slipping rib syndrome has to start somewhere and don't want this to end up with that as it's an awful illness to have not that other illness,s aren't, from what I've learned so far surly the earliest it's detected the better the out come ,I hope you understand where I'm coming from
@@lee-annmurphy9237 if it's the 8th rib it'd be more likely to be SRS as srs commonly affects 8 9 and 10 but 8 isn't as common as 9 and 10 according to dr hansen. I agree the earlier you can sort it the less likely it will cause more problems over time
Hi there 8 weeks in many tests all negative started pain left side then with in an HR super pain ended up lying on my right side on the floor could only stand for 10 minutes at a time for 3 weeks I am a lot better than that now 🎉 believe at the time I was gonna take all my pills if it carried on im a 47 yr old female in the UK I've been told it's costcondritus then I was told by a physio it's not my ribs even 🤷 so paid to see a chiropractor who listened to me 🙏 it's my 8 th rib which corresponds with bra line back pain it hurts to bathe ,it hurts to turn over and lie on my left side only do this by accident sleeping then it starts to ache at the front sometimes all day, hurts to stretch in a certain way but I can twist my body also roughly 2 inches in from my waist is a real painful tender spot which I mark to show drs but they don't look , my ribs seem to have moved slightly on that side above said mark and stick out slightly and I have like an indent in my skin if that makes sense also by the painful spot , it hurts to put my chin on my chest and push or pull thing s thinking of paying for a dynamic ultra sound just to check but if it turns out this is what I've got will drs even listen to me been off work ever since 😡 does this sound similar at all no pain on the center of my ribs or at the bottom ,or could the cartalige separated from that rib where it meets the bone loads of info sorry but just picking your brains hope you don't mind 🤗👍
Hi Lee-Ann. It's not uncommon for Drs to misdiagnose it as costochondritis, though you can also get costochondritis as a symptom of SRS. That all sounds very familiar. The broken cartilage at the front rubs on nerves that run from the spine to the stomach (or chest, depending on the rib) and when the nerve is irritated, the pain can show up anywhere along that line. For some people they get pain predominantly at the front, for others predominantly at the back, and for some the site and type of pain moves around. It's definitely worth having the dynamic ultrasound. Once you have the report as "evidence" you can then ask your GP to refer you to one of the surgeons with experience of srs (you can find these listed on slippingribsyndrome.org in the "find a specialist" page on the Europe tab. You'll probably find it really helpful to join the slipping rib uk facebook group too if you haven't already. Good luck! There's hope I promise.
@@slippingribsyndrome thank u I'll have a look any way I'm up to date with your vlogs now so it's been roughly a month iss how are u doing 😊
@@lee-annmurphy9237 i am still having some issues with rib 11 and and some nerve pain between 9 ajd 10 at the back but it's not uncommon and many people have inflammation between weeks 6-8. I think the nerves are waking up too. The scar tissue takes 3 to 6 months to form and harden, and secure the ribs fully so i'm not too worried yet(th ough i have wobbles) and i always remind myself that i'm in less pain than I was 7 weeks ago
@@slippingribsyndrome gosh I hope it all works out for you & please remember it's early days yet and don't over do it in your garden , keep us updated please and if I happen to get anywhere I'll let you know 🤷😊🤞👍
I totally agree with being an advocate for others and one’s self. I had to figure this out on my own, diagnose myself and push to have a Dynamic ultrasound performed which confirmed I have SRS. I contacted Dr Hansen and he directed me to Dr Haher Matar here in Canada. I am waiting on surgery which should happen in the early fall. Living with the complex pain pattern that comes with this has now stopped me from working. I am a registered massage therapist and with all my own knowledge and working with many different health professionals it has still been a long arduous road to figuring out what has been causing this severe disabling pain.
It sure is a tough journey! Good luck with surgery! I'm 6 weeks out today and doing very well. You'll be in good Hands with Dr. Matar
@@slippingribsyndrome I would really like to connect with you to discuss your experience. Symptoms etc, I work in this field and experiencing what has been going on with my body is mind boggling really. The sensations make no sense and then I think about it and I can piece them all together and understand but then it seems like it shouldn’t be causing me such a vast array of issues. The whole left side of my body from my lower leg to my neck and jaw are affected. I would love to hear more about what your progression has been like.
@@toddsmith6441 it sure is mind boggling. People close to me, and even my GP thought I was just experiencing "rib pain" but it is so much more that that. Muscles, bones, nerves, hips, diaphragm, stomach and bowels, back, front, side. It mimics and is so elusive. I wrote a very detailed blog of my journey at slippingribsyndrome.org and last updated it 2 days ago, but if you have any specific questions feel free to email me via the website. The facebook group is brilliant too if you're not a member, and there's a link to it under "support"
Thank you for sharing this and I agree very strongly that doctors and etc need to take the time to study / further research this. I started a healthier lifestyle/ weight loss journey about a year ago. Started walking 5k a day, then moved up to 10k walking a day. Never had any issue, then I started to jog and run 1k . After a couple weeks - that’s when it hit. What I started to notice after I was upping my exercise was the pain and it felt like my right rib right under my 7th rib was clicking and rolling over the other ribs. I could basically play with it like a little handle . I knew something wasn’t right and man it had me stressed out! Then the pain! I thought it was my liver or some liver disease! Such an odd feeling of pain that nerve gives off in there. Upon doing the research I came to the conclusion that it’s this SRS. What’s also weird about the situation is that I can grab the hook of the ribs on the left side (7th) and kind of wiggle it too, and it makes some clicking type noise/sensation - with no tenderness or pain at all. I think a lot of our bodies have been “poorly developed/not strong enough” in these areas from having bad posture over the years, not sitting up straight, and also being on cellphones and other awkward unnatural positions could be why we get these weird other pains throughout. This is just kind of my opinion and comment that those things could be a playing factor. The running exercise of course was what I think triggered mine. I think doing core strength workouts or other workouts could possibly help but I know some people have way more severe pain than I’m experiencing so they may be limited. I hope since you’ve uploaded this you’ve learned a ton more about your situation and are able to manage what you’re going through. Thanks again for sharing this information! Take care.
You're very welcome. Yes core strengthening can help (even pre and post surgery). I could only do planking, as anything that moved the ribcage was out of the question. I did them for 4 months and I do think it played a part in a good recovery! I had surgery 3.5 weeks ago on my right, my left will be at a later date. I'm improving week by week and though i still have some pain, it is much much more manageable than it was and i'm able to do some of what I loved again and feel like I have a future! I hope you manage to find some relief.

Hope it will get better soon, glad you have positive signs already. By the way, I admire your nice garden!
Thank you. The inflammation is probabky going to last a while but It's bearable and will be so worth it. I had plans for it and then had to stop so i'm really looking forward to being able to do things again, even if it's just a little bit at a time, and even just being able to get out there is wonderful!
Oh. My goodness! You've come along ways! This gives me hope. As welll! Today i was shopping... stooped over my. Walker.. screaming.. begging for help. With. My. Shopping.. got home. Bound my ribs. With. A corset. And crashed into a nap
Glad. Youre doing good. In the usa. You get squat for pain meds.. im.nervous. but tired. Of merely existing.. g i issues..vomiting and bowel issues. And the back and shoulder pain.
I stopped taking morphine on day 2, now i'm on codeine, gabapentin and paracetamol and doing ok. The rest are my normal meds or laxatives. I hope you get sorted soon, it's worth it, hang in there
Get well! 💪
Thank you x
Ouchies! Get. Well soon and take it easy.
Thank you x
YAY! So happy for you! Keep us informed.
Me too! It'll be tough but worth it. Thank you
Congratulations, this is so exciting :)
Thank you :)
Hooray! 🎉 What type of surgery?
I had the right 10th sutured to my 9th, 9th sutured to 8th and 11 loosely tethered to 10 as that was very hypermobile and was bouncing everywhere.
I hope you get. The surgery. Slipping rib. Is nasty. :( I cant get around without wearing a corset
If you get. Nerve blocks.. id ask. For sedation..even. being. Numbed with Marcain( i have eds so. Im.immune to lidicain) they are very painful to me and evoke. Nasuea. And vomiting. Not sure. Id like. Another.. OUCH
I didn't have nerve blocks as i've read from a lot of people that they either have no effect or it wore off very quickly, and there's the risk of lung puncture too. I think they're used as a diagnostic tool in some cases but surgery seems to be the only lasting relief.
Here. You get. The dynamic ultrasound ( or 3d cat scan, or both) before the referral. Doctors Like to. See that first. Before they see you.
How did. It go. For you?
It went really well. I'm having surgery on my right side next week and the left will be sometime in the future
Im scared of hearing. That too.. it could make it worse..my OLD primary. Dr before i moved told me i would not make it off the or table.. i told my. New dr and he made. This face. And said it was bs and if a dr isnt a surgeon he really. Has no right to say that, especially. When. Youre merely existing. And isolating from folks. Regardless its a chance. Im willing. To take.
Did. You get vomiting too?. I have. It pretty bad unless my ribs. Are bound like from a corset. Even the paramedics. And er drs. Do not like taking my corset off. When. They do, I'm strapped to a backboard. And. Straps. On my torso. I've passed out from. Severe ab pains. Having ehlers danlos. Dont. Help. Drs. Have used terms in my charts. Like costal margin rupture.. tiez , flail chest ( I cant breathe well without. Rib binding ) my left lung. Has shrank and .no longer functions. Something bout. My diaphragm. Not being connected on my left side. By all rights I shouldn't be alive. My ribs grind. Loud enough to be heard ( I have videoed. That).. praying. For help and relief.
I didn't get vomiting but very loose stools and lots of gas. I Saw a case study last week from a Dr in the US where an SRS patients rib was sticking into her stomach and bowel and causing lots of GI issues. If the rib is mobile it makes sense. I'm sure of my 11th rib rubs on my bowels but it comes in phases.
I think i.better bring this up to my orthopedics. They are wanting to do surgery on my shoulder and hip. For "impingement syndrome" but I've been thinking.. its like.. ok. The diagnostic block did not bring relief What if its NOT my shoulder and hip but a rib issue? I've had dynamic ultrasound. As well as 3d. Ct. Done at a special imaging center my dr sent me too. I'd hate to to through. Shoulder and hip surgery only to find out it was my ribs all along. Man I thought I was going crazy! Thank you!
Sometimes ribs 11 and 12 can drop and impinge on the iliac crest at the top of the hip. Quite a few people with SRS have this issue too, I guess EDS would make it more likely. Mention it to your surgeon, they will do a physical exam to check the distance and mobility. I Know Dr Hansen and other surgeons trim 11 and or 12 if this is necessary during surgery for the slipped ribs above. As for the shoulderblade, the ribs move up diagonally from the front towards the spine, and the nerves in the intercostal spaces between 8 and 9 and 9 and 10, pass under the shoulderblade. Because the nerves run from the front to the back, ipingement from the front can cause pain anywhere along that line. It's one reason this is so elusive. I had pain under my right shoulderblade for 4 years before things got much worse, I thought it was a problem with my back as it radiated out towards the spine. I can trace the path forward from the epicentre of the pain in the back along the intercostal space to the front ends of 9 and 10. On the left I have snapping scapula (moving my shoulder causes a click and uncomfortable feeling under the shoulderblade). If a rib comes loose at the front, there's going to be increased motion at the side and back too, if you think of a bucket handle. If one end breaks, the mobility of the whole hadle is vastly increased. On the left for me again it's rib 10 that has the broken cartilage and slips. I think because it's loose, it's moved slightly out away from my body resulting in the clicking and discomfort when the shoulderblade slides up and over it. There is a bump where the path should be smooth if that makes sense.
My. Cartilage are broke all down. The left side. My left lung has even shrunk and now dealing with severe pain up and down. The left side if my spine. I was told I have a rib completely broke off my spine ( I've kept all my digital images) and possibly one. Hitting my ileac crest. I've been out in the hospital a few times either to get me comfortable or as suicide watch.this isn't living.
I'm so sorry to hear this , it really is horrid and affects quality of life massively. Have you seen a specialist? Surgery can really help.
@@slippingribsyndrome my ehlers danlos dr is looking for me but none in Oklahoma. They. Only do hearts. Im. In a hard plastic brace. Now so i can breathe.
@@grettagrids I hope he manages to find someone not too far away for you. More doctors are open to this and are learning about it so hopefully it wont take too long. I hope you manage to get some relief.
This is so exiting, congratulations! I'm having meeting with Dr Jaklitsch in Boston on the 18th. I'm so glad you finally have doctors who are taking you seriously. I'm still nervous that I'll see the surgeon and he'll think there's nothing wrong. Good luck and I'm looking forward to your updates!
It is! I'm delighted more than I am nervous. Things are going to start to get better now, i'm in good hands and whatever happens from now will eventually lead to healing and less pain i'm sure. I think you'll be ok, but I remember how nervous I was before my official diagnosis. I think it's normal. I hope it goes well and i'll be thinking of you!
I totally understand that fear of being rejected. I'm just a bit socially anxious to begin with so I didn't bring up srs with my doctor because I read it was rare, even though the symptoms were so similar. I had heard of srs a full year before being diagnosed but I was thinking I should just let the doctor do his job. If you think you might have connections to something at least bring it up! No one knows your own body more than you, so it's important to voice concern. If it doesn't seem related, the doctor can tell you that, but at least they're aware.
For core strengthening they asked you to do sit ups?? I was told not to do anything that might aggravate the pain or movement, so like when planking you have no rib mobility.
Hi Kayla, no he asked me to do situps during the dynamic ultrasound to to try capture the ribs slipping. I was advised to do planks which don't move the ribcage like you say and I added leg raises too. Situps definitely aggrevate it
Thank you!
You're very welcome :)
Can the surgeon feel your ribs like Dr Hansen does to diagnoses srs? Imagining can be so tricky and what if your ribs are not moving at the time of dynamic ultrasound? I definitely think you have srs.
Yes, he will do. Normally people see the surgeon before getting a DU but I did it in reverse because I knew i'd struggle to get a referral from my GP without some sort of evidence. I even struggled with the evidence! But i got it in the end. I can feel 10 under 9 on both sides with my hands, and I can feel everything that's going on with 11 and 13 with my hands too so i'm confident my surgeon will be able to feel the same when I see him.
Thst was supoosed to say 11 and 12 but I mistyped and don't know how to edit it
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’ve gone through similar experiences, except, fortunately I can walk. I am almost sure I have this SRS too. The pain is awful.
You are very welcome. Hearing other peoples stories really helped me to feel less alone with this. I hope that you get some help and relief soon. Hang in there.
I've been suffering since late November. I was slowly re-cuperating from a long term illness and took on a task that my body wasn't ready for. I had severe pains in my upper abdomen, side and back. Also struggled to breathe - already have problems in that department as one of my previous problems was a collapsed lung. Did realise after a couple of weeks that there was a popping feeling when I twisted my torso. I could also get the same feeling by pressing along the bottom of my ribcage, right hand side. Did some research and everything pointed to slipping rib. It did start to show improvement after a few weeks but I exacerbated it by exercising with resistance bands before it had fully resolved. I did read that sleeping sat upright was better for healing slipped and broken ribs as laying on the side or back put the ribcage under pressure. I slept last night in an electric reclining chair with the back at approximately 45 degrees. I did pad the chair with a thick duvet and pillows. Woke this morning and found I was pain free for the first time since I hurt myself. I realise that the problem hasn't gone away as I was feeling some discomfort middle of the day and took a couple of paracetamol, but hopefully, taking that pressure off my ribcage and not doing anything strenuous for a few weeks will aid recovery. Early days but fingers crossed.
Updates Brian? Thank you for sharing this.
@@KongKaiju Hi Guerrila. It's vastly improved. I can still feel it move occasionally in bed but it never causes any more than the slightest discomfort. After sleeping in a recliner for 6 weeks, I moved back into bed. I even sleep on that side now. I don't feel that I'm out of the woods yet so will be careful for a few more months but I feel quite good about it now. Hope yours is improving though it does sound as if you had it a lot worse than I did.
