1. Stick 2. Counter 3. Power 4. Tunnel Screen 5. Four Verticals I agree with this list although my 5 would substitute Inside Zone for Counter simply because there's so much you can do with IZ in your offense.
Yeah I’m with you too I really like IZ and it’s a staple in my offense. However the gap schemes are a little easier to teach early on which is why I would start out with power, and counter. I wouldn’t want to mix a zone scheme with a gap scheme right from the jump. IZ wouldn’t be far behind though. Totally agree with its versatility.

Are there any other drills you use for your QBs in the offseason? Leave a comment let me know.
Did I get the analysis right? Or did you see something different that I missed?
Love that first drill: Mofo Press Motion. I preach that to our kids
Yes sir it’s a great drill. Highly effective.
I went around it I did not know what it was lol
Ran it out of our empty look. We use a TE strong and Wing to the Weak Side and it hit pretty well. Also set up Pop to the TE with it
Good stuff coach. Did it work well for you?
@CoachRossFootball the formation did well for us because we could usually force cover 1/0 especially when we'd motion
The counter itself hit big because we used Jet and Buck Sweep a few times to the boundary with it and even ran QB Counter off the same look with the BASH option
@anthonyarinaga9086 that’s exactly it coach. This type of motion is an extremely versatile tool to add that doesn’t change much but can really mess with a defense.
@anthonyarinaga9086 I love it coach. Would love to have a conversation with you about it and gain some more ideas. Thanks

@@CoachRossFootball 😁
Would it be possible to incorporate elements of the air raid into this offense to balance the attack? Thank you!
Absolutely. I’ve coached with a coach primarily a wing-t guy and we used air raid principles in the passing game aside from the usual wing T pass plays like waggle or divide. The trick is finding a few you’re good at and teach the grass principles and reading space. Key is practice.
Ok..hear me out...COD Black Ops...Firing Range 🤯
Do you have a 7 on 7 playbook that shows cover 2, cover 3 and man?
I don’t have a playbook for 7v7. We typically run our normal stuff in 7v7. Like snag, stick, smash, fade out vs cover 2 and 3. Mesh and shallow vs man switch routes with 4 verts. Typically use our base formations out of 2x2, 3x1, and empty
Is that video vs Cover 3?
Yes that was against a cover 3
Hey Coach, been loving this series really appreciate you taking the time to put all of this together. I coach highschool in Canada, so we play CFL rules with 12 players on each side (and a wider and longer field). Do you think that the Air Raid would work in that setting? The main difference is there would usually be an extra DB to cover in that overhang position and the OLB would have the RB out of the backfield. I'm thinking our base would be Ace but with 2 split rbs. I really hope you get this message and can provide some advice! Thanks again, really appreciate everything
I’m glad you enjoyed the series. And I hope it’s been helping. I think the air raid could work in your situation. The air raid relies on space. What better to help then with a wider field for a defense to defend. You can do a lot with that extra player. What I might do is use a player deep in your concept to occupy the safety to that side of the field and from there you take one defender out and you’ll have your typical triangle read.
@CoachRossFootball right that makes a lot of sense! I have to remember speed in space so the exact layout of the defence doesn't matter as much. Again thanks so much!
@gregk7916 no problem. Anytime you need help, or have a question feel free to reach out. Glad I could help.
what software are you using at the end of this video to demonstrate the play?
When I am drawing out the play I am using Hudl. At the very end where you see players on the field I am using Go Army Edge.
Who is 'everybody'? You're talking to no one, bud.
Well…. you saw it so it must not be no one. I think you answered your own question bud.
yes king🎉🎉🎉
I would like to know if you could Diagram how you use/block with your Recievers on these Counters?
Yeah I could do that
Great video. I would love to get you on the channel.
I appreciate it coach. Thank you for the offer to come on. Would love to do it.
Whats the 2 by 2 rule all things balance
My rule for every quick game out of 2x2 is RB is always part of the concept. Therefore he’s running the shoot/swing. Middle receiver in stick for example is the stick route and outside has the vertical. 3x1 Rb is never part of the concept unless we tag something.
@CoachRossFootball I got the Army app. Thank you. You on Twitter?
Glad I could help. Yes sir : Coach Jason Ross is my Twitter.
What program are you using to draw up these plays?
I’m using HUDL to diagram these plays
@@CoachRossFootball is that something anyone can purchase?
@vhype233 HUDL you have to purchase and it’s not exactly cheap. However if you’ve seen some my earlier videos I used and still use to this day a free program called Go Army Edge. I recommend using that. It’s free!!!

How would your in season schedule look for a youth team with only about 18 players with most going both ways?
The base schedule would look the same as far as the flow. I would cut out a couple of the situation periods like first and third down, and replace them with straight team reps on air or with the kids you have a makeshift front seven for one series and then a back 7 for another series. The focus on Indy or group would be a lot of fundamentals and less scheme. I would drop the mesh and rpo periods and extend screen and ROA periods.
I apologize for the crazy glitch around the 10 minute mark. I have no idea what happened, but the audio is still good

This is super helpful! I actually came up with a similar drill but I like the idea of 2 QBs and splitting the field. Thanks coach!

Have a variation with a backside tight end rather than the Z...might be easier for the D to lose from time to time
I agree. TE hidden backside could be a good variation. Especially at the middle school level.
Hello Coach, how does front recognition by either the QB or C factor into o line pass blocking? What kind of concepts are better for BOB vs half slide? What are the factors in choosing to BOB vs half slide? Do you let your QB or C call the pass protection? What is the "normal" O line depth and splits (not the leachian splits, but the way it is shown in your diagrams?) Go army edge puts everyone initially at the line, but why is it most common to have a little depth and width?
With BOB pass pro particularly your 3 interior (2G’s and C) linemen are responsible for nearest defender to their inside gap. Tackles protect B-C gaps. QB is responsible for Mike. RB typically if he’s in pass pro would pickup most dangerous off weakside edge. This is how I teach it. I feel that BOB is best overall be a in our offense we want the ball gone as fast as possible, combine that with our line splits and depth it gives us more time. I would say half slides are best for those traditional drop back passes where the full field is in play, and the slide shores up backside protection. Typically don’t let QB or C change or mess with protection, the basic rules typically are good enough to provide protection. We do have them communicating though with what they see, strengths and pressures etc. There is no one size fits all rule with regards to splits and depth. I like the 3 foot splits and having the next most outside linemen line his toe with the nearest interior linemen’s heel. The idea with wide splits and trying to stretch depth as far as possible is that more space creates more time. Just because you linemen have backed up a bit doesn’t mean the d line can move up, they can’t cross the LOS. So you’ve created just a little more distance and coupled with your linemen getting into vertical drops that’s just that much further a d linemen has to go before he engages and truly gets into his pass rush. Then by using wide splits you essentially have the d line widen out which puts every d linemen further from the QB creating more space. D line has to respect their gaps otherwise you simply pinch them inside all game and run outside until they adjust.
blitzes beat the air raid offense, just ask kliff kingsbury
Possibly. But a good coach knows how to beat the blitz, and in fact welcome the blitz. I for one love it when a team blitzes. That’s one or two less in coverage.
Offensive stats say otherwise

it's too small, can't see it
Coach, can you have the BST and C combo the 3 and PSG base block the 2i, and PST base block the 5-tech? BSG still can pull.
Yeah I think you could. No total right or wrong way, the best way is the one that works
That backside scoop has to be difficult unless the splits are super tight. How are you dealing with a odd tight/tite front?
I use 3 ft splits and that pull to the LB has never been much of an issue. Counting on the LB to read and fit the run which typically brings him to the block. from there the RB simply reads the block and reacts. I posted a picture of how I would draw it up against an odd front in the community tab if you'd like to see.
@@CoachRossFootball I’m talking about the BST scooping a 3, 2, or 2i
@mythikos3535 ok I thought you were talking about the puller. Well to be honest if I saw a 2 or 2i I wouldn’t be calling power away from that look if at all. So I agree with a 2 or 2i that’s a tough block. We typically see a 4 in that type of look, but a 3 might be difficult but not impossible.
@@CoachRossFootball gets tricky if you’re facing a team that likes to stem their front at the snap.
@mythikos3535 yeah I agree and hope we see that so we can adjust. Plenty of things that can be done to take them out of that.
Hey coach I’m going all in air raid with my 6th graders. We mainly see 5-3 & 4-4 cover 3 one high. I’m loving early/late and trying to find reasons to use 2x2 other than to install 4 verts. Which concepts do you feel absolutely work better out of 2x2 than trips? Thx!
I feel your true drop back game is better out of 2x2. Plays like cross, shallow cross, mesh work better out of a 2x2 set.
@@CoachRossFootball I agree, Thx Coach!

Hey there, Coach! Got a quick question for ya..! How would you recommend someone learn the basics of football? Like maybe watching someone explain it or just watching a random NFL game..
RUclips is a great source. But what are you looking to learn because it’s something I can potentially help with.
@@CoachRossFootball I don't particularly know much about football, I've always watched hockey and baseball all my life. If you could possibly explain the basic positions that'd be great! I appreciate you taking the time to reply!
@JasonHayes-jq8bs do you want the offensive side of the ball or defensive side?
@@CoachRossFootball Offensive
@JasonHayes-jq8bs Quarterback-receives the snap from center can hand the ball off to a RB run the ball himself, or drop back to pass the ball. The Running lines up in backfield behind or next to QB, either gets a hand off or catches s pass. Wide receivers line up outside far out and in the slot and mainly catch passes but can also receive hand offs out of fast motion plays. Tight end can line up on the line or off of it, can block for the run or pass or catch passes himself. Offensive linemen: Tackles: most outside linemen either side of center Guards: inside of both tackles either side of center Center is middle part of line and he snaps ball to QB Need to have 7 on the line of scrimmage at all times before snap. 5 linemen plus 2 receivers. There’s more to it but that’s the basics
