Fire-Flowers, composed by laura hawley
Performed by Ariose, Jolaine Kerley, Artistic Director,

May, 2023
Score: www.laurahawley.ca/catalogue/the-secret-wisdom-of-flowers/
Text: "Fire-Flowers" by E. Pauline Johnson
And only where the forest fires have sped,
Scorching relentlessly the cool north lands,
A sweet wild flower lifts its purple head,
And, like some gentle spirit sorrow-fed,
It hides the scars with almost human hands.
And only to the heart that knows of grief,
Of desolating fire, of human pain,
There comes some purifying sweet belief,
Some fellow-feeling beautiful, if brief.
And life revives, and blossoms once again.

Laura Hawley's SATB setting of Shakespeare's 43rd Sonnet, performed by the Larkin Singers in Toronto on April 5th, 2014. Sonnet 43: When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see, For all the day they view things unrespected; But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee, And darkly bright are bright in dark directed; Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright, How would thy shadow's form f...
Is there a version out there that is not live
As far as I know, there is not!!
I used to listen to this youtube video on loop for hours, and sometimes it felt like I was looping it for days or weeks at a time - through high school exams and college assignments, and now in my work days as well. Every spring, like clockwork, it gets stuck in my head again and I’m back here to listen to it, and smile at how joyful it is. I think this week’s warm weather brought it to mind again even though it’s definitely not spring. Thank you for this one Laura - I have sung many of your pieces (and will be performing Christmas Snowflakes in a few days!) but I have not yet had the pleasure of singing this one anywhere but to myself around the house. Maybe one day :)
This is my favorite peice I've ever done in my choir career. I hope to sing this for my graduation ceremony with my choir
I was introduced to this beautiful piece of music at the Halifax Conducting Institute (2019). It is always in my head and on my mind. Kudos to Laura Hawley!!
I got to read through this piece at the ACDA national convention this past weekend and absolutely loved it! Such fun to sing, and a nice blend of the ease and tonality of popular/acapella repertoire while still being appropriate in a formal choral setting. Brava! www.marjoriehalloran.com
Thank you Laura for this great interpretation of Shakespeare's sonnet! It is very intelligent, bright and joyfull ! I discovered WS's sonnets 2 weeks ago (they are not so famous in France). You give your own version of this beautifull sonnet : thats a delight for my ears! Thank you
Laura Hawley, wonderful wonderful setting! Bravo!
