He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years, and is presently the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University where he teaches courses on Hindu philosophy and religion.
He has published eight books, and authored a number of articles on the earliest origins of the Vedic culture, yoga philosophy, and the Krishna tradition. Nyaya Philosophy's Defense of Ishvara (God) - Edwin Bryant
In this thought-provoking lecture, Edwin Bryant examines the Nyāya school of Indian philosophy and its robust defense of Īśvara (God) as the ultimate creator and sustainer of the universe. Unlike other schools of Indian thought, Nyāya builds its arguments for God’s existence on logic, inference, and empirical reasoning, presenting a rational framework that continues to be relevant in theological and philosophical debates.
Key topics discussed:
• **Nyāya Philosophy Overview:**
- The epistemology of Nyāya: Perception, Inference, Comparison, and Testimony (*Pramāṇas*).
- Nyāya's logical system and its emphasis on debate and reasoning.
• **Arguments for Īśvara:**

Appreciate your efforts, thanks. And I like legend too
Hare Krishna! Thank you for uploading this video. Please can you tell me which translation you use for the Rig Veda? Thank you so much. 😊
Thank you, Professor! Such beautiful teachings! Can I know what book you are referring to so that I can get a copy? I’m not an official student of yours- just a lover of your work. 🙏🏻
Thanks for the lecture
Very interesting. Thanks for putting in a lot of effort to create these videos. Appreciate your enthusiasm
Many thanks x
That's good explanation
A gift to the world. Thank you.
Thank you very much Dr Edwin for your wonderful lectures!! However, the audio quality could be better.
What an amazing treasure trove of wisdom you've created here Pundit Ji 🙏🏽❤ I'm sincerely grateful to you and That which led me to this discourse.
Please share a link for the text being used.
Do you have an opinion on Alan Watts?
Hope that there would be multi-part series on Mimamsa & Vaisheshika schools of philosophy as well 🥲
There are older videos on that on his channel.
@duckpotat9818 I've seen em all. So far only Nyaya, Yoga & Samkhya have been covered on the channel along with some videos of Vedanta & Upanishads. It'd be so great if we get proper series on both Mimamsa & Vaisheshika as well.
Dear Prof please can you consider continuing the Yoga sutras? I've rewatched your classes on padas 1 and 2 till they're dog-eared 😅
Edwin throws Christian Gnostic cosmology a bone in the intro! In some ways it could be summed up by Brahma as poser and Brahman/Purush the one and true reality!
33:57 According to the Bhagavata Purana, the present age of the universe is about 155.52 trillion human years old.
4:56 Vyāsadeva is also the author of Brahma Sutra. Very interesting, thanks. You have done justice to the topic. I am interested in uttara minamsa myself
Any update when the Prof will be doing zoom classes on the 3rd Pada?
Actually Ramakrishna's "yata mata tata path" shouldn't be seen as new agey woo woo. It is rather in the same Rig vedic sense of truth is one , the sages call it by various names. This is clear from the gospel of Ramakrishna. He speaks of various forms of realisations, bhavas, mahabhavas. He clearly speaks of how the bhakta doesn't want to merge with the divine. Bhakta wants to taste the sugar and not become the sugar. And then there are so many instances where we find him appreciating different mystical and spiritual views and experiencing them. I am mentioning this because I see that you referred to "yata math tata path" to criticize the view that all spiritual paths are the same. But that really is not the import. And indeed Ramakrishna is one of the prime examples of diverse, spiritual explorations. A life of experiencing the divine in various forms. To think that Ramakrishna's statement is against pluralism of mytical experiences is a massive misunderstanding. And in my humble opinion it doesn't suit someone of your intellectual and religious strength... Pranam 🙏 Hare Krishna , Jai Ramakrishna , Om...
@44:50 It could be a silly argument but it's foundational to Christian Gnostic thinking: that this is exactly what Yaldabaoth said (and did)..;
Namaste!!! 🙏
It's a Christmas miracle!
The first option is correct. The whole Brahman transforms into the world.
Please provide pdf of this nyaya sutras with commentries
Thank you. I am not a very devotional type.. I have been given a Siva mantra by a renowned yogic- Vedanta teacher sometime back in my mail conversation.. though I am not a regular japa practitioner… 19:59 I am spread on to many things .. I like some of the mindfulness teachings and Buddha’s teachings …but not Buddhist philosophy of non self ..I did some orientation on yoga Sutra with a student of Krishnamavharya.. and liked it…I feel the disconnection and feel the need for Connection with divine …I started attending an Advaitic Bhagavadgita study with a monk in Sankaras tradition…but I feel that denying individual soul status to a person by Advaitha …not making intuitive sense… when I raise this issue, the teacher sticks to their monistic stance…at the same time I do not want to be a full time vaishnavite .. I want to have the choice to continue with Shiva as deity and be open for other deities….essentially I do not fit in any school… how do I proceed … can you study Visishtadvaita Bhagavadgita by Sri Ramanujacharya to get a vishistadwaita perspective with out being a vaishnavaite…but continue with Shiva… not sure about my continuing study on pure play Advaitha ( though I find Yoga- Vedanta from shivananda lineage is some what different.) . I find Ramanuja’s ideas of developing capacity of self awareness and capacity for awareness of god intresting… do you have any suggestion for me on how to proceed…
A Christian Gnostic here with a great love for Madhvachara and also the Anurag Sagar....
Madvacharya is most interesting philosopher for me.
I love the Prof's tangential explanations and riffs; they're so packed with information.
❤😊
The story of Bharata is one of my favourites. I really enjoyed this. I also find the Q+A section inspirational. I know Professor Bryant says he is planning to do Mimansa next but I cannot wait for more of the Bhagavatam. x
Het there, in your estimation did the idea of Prakriti in antiquity, from those who held this view, contain the idea of proto-sentience or what we would call panpsychism today?
The point on Capitalism is wrong and unfounded. The fact that anyone can listen to this talk, seperated by ocean and continents in a seamless manner is also a result of markets. Markets do not just create desire, They facilitate coordination of varuous plans that individuals, including their rightful swadharma actions, Prices are just signals which conveys useful information that people need about availability of resources, for whatever purpose they migjt serve. Every society faces the natural fact of scarcity, and markets are best means possible for producing abundance, Rich countries are cleaner than poor countries and the more a country grows, they easier it can transition into a cleaner society, china has become much cleaner in the present only due to expanding enough economically. A Dharmic society will naturally require the means of that produce abundance and prosperity for most of humanity and markets are the scientifically best way of achieving it, The central planning vs spontaneous order debate has settled that question in the last centuries with USSR failure, And failure of socialist run protectionist countries like India and Chian , Both of whom later liberlaised and expirenced prosperity much more than before. Moreover, Advertising is a form of communication useful information to consumers, it serves the same purpose an abstract does in case of a paper, informing the reader/consumer why they should be interested in it and spend time/money or both
This was a good lecture. Thank you. So matter has no reason to evolve towards any teleological end. True it is that a mass of particles will gravitate towards some state, when acted upon by certain impersonal (non-conscious) forces; or, will remain in the same state if not disturbed in any manner. But these are mere states and such changes in particle configuration are incapable of imitating the tremendous creative power inherent in _conscious intervention_ . Teleology would imply a degree of organization of matter that goes far beyond the mere state change mentioned above. It would involve almost at every step the choosing of a "correct" course of action from a set of alternatives. Only a conscious entity -- an intelligent mind -- is blessed with such a capability.
OMG, after 65 years of working on the God problem" finally I find you who can articulate about the context and the historic documents. A million thank yous. Please get a book out on these presentations.
Love from India
Thanks sir 🙏
Very nice exposition Will it be possible to have a lecture on how one can defend the notion of an enduring self from the criticism of neuro science? How would these traditional arguments go through when the purvapaksha is neuroscientist who claims self is an illusion created by neurons
What a gift 😍

I became lost in the maya again for a while, but I knew that listening to Professor Bryant explaining Bhakti Yoga would get me back on track. Inspirational. The Bhakti texts are everything. Thank you x
Hello. Wonderful session. Can I just ask, what does the word Paramatma mean? I understand Brahman is the impersonal absolute, and the Atman is the personal within each being. Bhagavan is Isvara with a particular form. But can you explain what Paramatma means? Is Paramatma the same as Bhagavan? Thank you so much x
@@laughinggnome81 *Bhagavad Gita As It Is (1972) Chapter 2 Verse 2 Purport:* Bhagavān is the ultimate in the Absolute Truth. Absolute Truth is realized in three phases of understanding, namely Brahman or the impersonal all-pervasive spirit; Paramātmā, or the localized aspect of the Supreme within the heart of all living entities; and Bhagavān, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa. vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvaṁyaj jñānam advayam brahmeti paramātmeti bhagavān iti śabdyate. "The Absolute Truth is realized in three phases of understanding by the knower of the Absolute Truth, and all of them are identical. Such phases of the Absolute Truth are expressed as Brahman, Paramātmā, and Bhagavān." (Bhāg. 1.2.11) These three divine aspects can be explained by the example of the sun, which also has three different aspects, namely the sunshine, the sun's surface and the sun planet itself. One who studies the sunshine only is the preliminary student. One who understands the sun's surface is further advanced. And one who can enter into the sun planet is the highest. Ordinary students who are satisfied by simply understanding the sunshine-its universal pervasiveness and the glaring effulgence of its impersonal nature-may be compared to those who can realize only the Brahman feature of the Absolute Truth. The student who has advanced still further can know the sun disc, which is compared to knowledge of the Paramātmā feature of the Absolute Truth. And the student who can enter into the heart of the sun planet is compared to those who realize the personal features of the Supreme Absolute Truth.
Very disappointed with the printing used in your book. It is so light. I had read this in a review but did not expect so light colored print. Like ordering a shirt and receiving a faded one. Great book. Bad print.
Hare Krishna! Grateful for everything you do dr. Edwin Bryant! 🙏🌞🙏
It'd be so great if u could do the series on Mimamska & Vaisheshika😭
