Hi Liza, this is a very good topic I have not sat down and thought about what gifts I have gained since I lost the hearing. I still can't fly yet so that super power wasn't given to me lol. I have always embraced technology at an early age. I guess my memory has sharpen since my hearing lost. I am also a great listener to people. I know it sounds weird being hearing impaired but I have some friends that get in touch with me and talk about a lot of things, some very private things. I am also very awear of things around me and I observe more than normal. Pretty much everything you've mentioned that I have gifts for.

Hi Liza, thank you for bringing up this great topic. I am not old enough for Medicare yet however, my mom is and I am trying to convince her to see an audiologist. I also watch Dr. Cliff myself regularly and I found that he is a great source to listen to about hearing aids, medicare benefits information etc. He has a wide range of information to listen to. My appointment is coming up soo on 5/16/24 to pick up my hearing aids for my left side. I am so excited! I am trying to cope with being so exhausted from my cochlear implants. I consulted with an audiologist about this and they said this is typical since my brain is re-learning to hear differently acoustically so it's a very draining ordeal. I can hear sounds like I used to and more voices of people are natural sounding. No more alien, robotic, or small furry creatures sounding. Music however, still sounds off a bit on some tunes I listen to. It's coming up on exactly 3 months since my CI surgery and 3 months since activation. I see my audiologist on 5/29. Hello Liza, Yeah I had a brief issue with mine but it was quickly fixed, I have 2 phones a iPhone and a Samsung. Cochlear America are correct Samsung Galaxy models are not fully supported. I use my iPhone mostly with my sound processors. The issue I had was one would steal the Bluetooth signals from the other phone. So now I just disable the Bluetooth in my Samsung phone. And I never had an issue since. However, my iPad steals the Bluetooth signal as well since I sometimes listen to my audiobooks from my iPad or my iPhone. Yes we need to have patience with technology it can be a pain in the butt at times. My computer always gives me issues daily. It keeps me on my toes with troubleshooting my system and friends systems as well. I am pretty much the go to guy when others need assistance.

You posted very good information on the battery life. I got about 36-41 hours on my N7 processor using Power one Implant Plus batteries & recently got an upgrade to a N8 and the battery life was reduce to about 31 -36 hours, depending on how much noise I was exposed to. I do not like using rechargeable because it is a pain in the neck replacing & charging them up, so I rather use the disposables. Once the rechargeable battery go dead, within a day or less, it is a pain to change the rechargeable battery module & replace it with another rechargeable that was recently charged. . I would rather buy the Power One Implant plus disposable batteries from ebay or elsewhere then pay the $259 to Cochlear for two new rechargeable batteries. I only had one ear implanted about 22 years ago & never got the other one done & most likely never will.

Hi Liza, thank you for this video. I was surprised to learn dementia is linked with hearing loss. 😲 I am now concerned about my mom's hearing. She listens to the cell phone volume very loud and often have me repeat myself over again. I want to bring it to her attention and have a hearing test. But I don't know how well she with take it or even if she would have such a test done. It's funny because I was the one used to have people repeat themselves often and I recall me not liking to do it but I had to if I wanted to understand others. My mom's health is important to me. And I am trying to find a way to apporach this subject with her. She has noticed a big improvementt in my hearing since my coahlear implants. Now I dont think she requires a CI but I feel she may have mild hearing loss. And it's not just me that she has a hard time hearing. I don't know maybe I talk too low now since I can hear myself speak and assume others can hear my level tone. Maybe I need to talk to my audiologist to give me some feedback on my speech levels? Hi Liza, You raise a great point. I find myself having my sound processor would fall off my ear. I need to invest in to huggie type connector to keep my processors on my ear. Right now I wear a beanie cap to keep them on. But it's getting warmer here in southern California so this opens will not last very long. You poor thing, I am happy you found your sound processors. The Cochlear app allows to locate your sound processors. The N8 are able to find where they are approximately, I believe the N7 may also be traceable but don't quote me on that. 🤞

Hello Liza, Oh by the way I love my new ears LOL. I have sensual neural hearing loss myself. I lost it at a young age and doctors are not sure why it happen to me. It was believed that I would be profoundly deaf. It would gradually get worse over time after each audiogram test. My right ear was completely profound. My left was heading in that direction as well but it stopped at severe profound loss. So hearing aids were an option for it but my right ear would only benefit from sound awareness. It was a good thing I did because it helped me later with my cochlear implant journey. I could hear things much faster and sounds I had not heard in ages. I cried happy tears when I listened to the windshield wipers against the glass screeching in the car. It's the little things we take for granted that I hear and listen to and I shake my head and wonder the last time I heard that particular sound.

Hi Liza, great topic I was against cochlear implants in the 90's and early 2000's I was scared to have an operation. It was never pushed on me but I was told it would improve my life. Now that I am 2 months and a day with my cochlear implant I love it! It has really enriched my life in many ways. I can hear things I have not heard in years, much better than my hearing aids. I was told I would be a candidate for a CI for my left ear. I am weighing in the options of the benefits of a hearing aid, and I don't want to lose any residual hearing I have. I can distinguish voices much better and I can tell you it was the best decision I could have made for myself. The deaf community doesn't welcome it with open arms and I get it. It a personal choice and I respect both sides. I was born hearing and later lost it over time and was primarily deaf and used lip reading and ASL to communicate. It's just a tool like glasses that requires more care into getting one and a lot of patience and practice. Thank you Liza for bringing this great topic to light.

Hi Liza, Good to see you back.I got some news on my hearing aids they were ordered today so I should have it in 2-4 weeks. I was asked if I would like to upgrade them and I will be given the prices on them to make up my mind. I am trying to remain calm when I see the prices lol.

Hi Liza., you bring up a very valid point about ear infections, vertigo, and dizziness. I had no idea I could get infections, easier now with my CI. I will definitely keep an eye on it now. I had my first month's follow-up for my sound processor and it went very well. I scored on the word-recognition from 41% to 56%, and sentences from 0% to 82%. I am so amazed at how it turned out. I still can't wait for my ReSound hearing aids for my left ear. This is so amazing I am so glad you started this and the other channel. You have helped others like me so much and I have learned a lot by coming to this and the other channels. Kudos to you Liza, for going well and beyond for all of us.

Hello Liza, I am so guilty if this problem. I used to sleep with my hearing aids at night from fear of everything you mentioned. I tend to stay up very late and it is a bad habit of mine. I would sometimes fall asleep at the keyboard watching RUclips videos. I would sometime get 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I have sleep medication but I would not take it until I am ready to lay down. Funny thing is that most of the time I am falling asleep on my own with out the need of medication. I know it is not good for my mental health and overall health as well. I need to set some limits and stick to them. Thnk you for making this video, I am nodding off as we speak LOL!

Hi Liza, yes you are right I do get tired more tired than normal. I have not been so tired since I started to wear hearing aids for the first time. Since my CI I have been tired and nodding off lol. I realize that the brain is overworked with listening and since I have not heard anything in my right ear for a long time. I was told it's normal for me to experience tiredness. I know I should do what you do take my processors off and unwind. Ever since I donated my old hearing aids, I have relied on my CI side more which my audiologist suggests I do 4 hours a day. Also on the phone I am having a hard time I have to ask my mom to listen in to help me make out what the other person is saying. I sometimes use the VRS (Video Relay Services) to make and receive calls in ASL. Thank you for making this video Liza. 😃❤

Hi Liza, wow you never cease to amaze me. I was wondering what to do with my boxes. Granted it I knew I could just throw them away but I held on to them like some treasure. I have them in my cool nifty backpack and all the goodies that came with it. I will just do as you suggested to do. "Let it go!" haha It will definitely cut down on the clutter. Also, I thought of a great topic for you to share with views. I am not sure about the other companies' CI brands but Cochlear America offers "One Plus" a free addon to your kit of items for free. Hi Liza, Oh my gosh! I know what you mean by scheduling doctor appointments. I require ASL interpreters for most of my doctor's appointments and they fail to request them sometimes. Or the interpreters don't show up or on time. I get really frustrated most of the time when this happens. I would sometime be given video ASL interpreters and they really suck because it sometimes do not connect or drop connection. So I always request a live interpreter. I know the video interpreters are cheaper for the insurance companies however, the quality of service is poor. As for the staff using masks I asked them to please face me I need to read lips to fully understand. Most of the time they accommodate me. Great video Liza

Hi Liza, thnak you for making this video about the struggles of hearing loss I have 3 people I know are struggling with hearing loss and they are currently hiding it to everyone. I referred them to your channel for advice. Also my audiologist ordered the ReSound Nexia 9 BTE rechargeable. I was shocked at the price of these bad boys. I mean I know hearing aids in general are expensive but man. I preferred the non-rechargeable because I could change the batteries on the fly when they died and not have to wait till they charged up. The positive note is that they last up to 24 hours so that's a plus. I however have a satisfaction guarantee if I am not happy with them. They also sport the Auracast Bluetooth feature so that is another plus. My Audiologist believes I will really like these I mean compared to my 2-year-old current hearing aids am sure it's way better. I will donate them like I did my Phonak hearing aids. Oh before I go I finally made an intro video for future videos it short and sweet lol I have to look at it again because I did it while I was sleepy lol

Hello Liza, I just paired mine along with other items I had ordered. The Mini Mic 2+ is great I have used it a few times with my family and I plan to branch out to using it at DCS Deaf Community Services when they have a special guess speaker I could follow along without relying in sign language. I don't know if I mentioned this but I got my insurance to cover 2 hearing aids with a co-pay for ReSound hearing aids. I am so excited. I have to wait till April 3rd because my audiologist will be out of town for 2 weeks and she has to order it as well. I only need one but they emailed me the information listed 2 hearing aids. I guess I can have a back up like my sound processors 😀 Great video Liza.

Hi Liza, I remember all the stages I went through when I lost my hearing and moved to hearing aids, to Cochlear Implants. I recall feeling a little unsure of myself. Since I am still new to my CI's and I just had my program changed. and at first, I was not too fond of the new program but after using it for a full day I liked it more than my old program. I can tell the difference in people voices. I am still learning and getting used to it but so far I love it. In the short time I've been activated my confidence has improved. I had 0% word recognition and now I have 41% word recognition and sounds in one week in my implanted right ear! That's crazy! Also Liza, I just got the email from my secondary insurance for my ReSound hearing aid has been approved yay! So now I will be able to link my CI sound processor with my hearing aid so I can control both devices on my iPhone at once. Thank you Liza, for a great video

Hi Liza, Oh my goodness you really know your viewers. Since I've been activated I found myself more tired than usual. I mean I am exhausted after talking or listening to others. Or even doing my homework of listening to audiobooks and reading along. I wondered what was making me so sleepy. LOL Now I know why. Hello Liza, I am listening to you with both ears now and everyone sounds kind of like a chipmunk Lol. But the main thing I am hearing you and I am understanding you clearly. You know I wish I did this much sooner but better late than never right? I've been doing my homework I was asked to practice 1 hour a day, I on the other had did a lot more hehe. I listen to audiobooks and follow along on reading the text version. I am amazed at how well I am doing. I was told I may not hear much since I have not hear out of that ear for every long time 30-something years.This is great and if anyone is on the fence on getting hearing aids or a cochlear implant, as a new person to presently been implanted and a wearer of hearing aids, I would say talk to your audiologist and ENT doctor to see whether you are a possible candidate. As for what it's like for me being deaf or hard of hearing? it is tough to be honest I felt so alone and was afraid to reach out to people or my trust level was very low of people. As Liza stated it's a lot of work and managing your hearing aids/ CI recharging them, being careful not to lose them because they are expensive pieces of equipment. Hello Liza, you know those huggy things are so cute, aren't they? Lol But seriously guess what tomorrow is, It's my activation day yay! I wanted to know for the first visit how long it last on average. I have another appointment on 3/6/24 which is a few days later. It seems that they'll find as many things to help me relearn to hear. I am not sure what to expect but I am very grateful to have this opportunity. I already paid for audiobook subscription and bought several books of the same title to follow along. I have so many questions I want to ask but I am keeping my expectations down to earth. I really like these small custom tailored videos on CI's and the add on that comes with it. Kudos to you Liza. Hello Liza, How are you? You seem to pick the best topics for hearing loss. I had issues with appointments due to not scheduling an ASL interpreter for me or them not showing up on time or ever. It is really bad sometimes I had to reschedule it a number of times. I find that people are so used to talking to hearing people that they tend to forget so easy that they are talking to an hearing loss person. I try to educate them and when I first meet or introduce myself I would say right off the bat that I am deaf or hard of hearing before I address myself. It some times works but they tend to forget fast lol. Also I am healing well I am to see my surgeon tomorrow and should give me the green light that I am healing great. I am in no pain whatsoever. I am craving girls scouts cookies LOL. Again thank you so much I go in to get my CI activation on 2/28 I'm so excited. Great video 😀❤❤❤

Hi Liza, Tech Tuesday is like Taco Tuesday? Either way they both are great! I am doing very well I been trying to follow your advice and I was like a hyperactive kid Lol. I have very little pain, numbness around the outer ear, but I can still wiggle it. 😁 I removed the bandages and ear cup after 48 hours. I left the strips on I was told it will fall off on it's own. I can't believe I went through it! I love it! Whoo! I go see my doc one last time to check on my healing process and then on 2/28 I get activated. Liza, would I be classified as a cyborg now? If so I need to change my human/cyborg definition when I put my species down LOL. Okay in all seriousness Thank you again and great video. Hi LIza, yes this topic is an important one and should be talked about. So many people suffer alone in domestic violence and abuse. And having a hearing loss makes it even worse. I attended some help groups that spoke on this very issue and I really learned a lot. I recall a friend that was is a bad relationship and didn't know what to do. I tried my best to educate her but she was so afraid to leave him. I even think she believe she deserved to be treated that way. I really felt bad for her and I even reported it to the authorities. They finally arrested him and she ended up moving out of state. I still think about her time to time and wonder if she is doing okay. Liza, I am continuing recovering and taking your advice. I am doing better since it been 24 hours from surgery, I think I will be okay. I have a question does your cochlear implants sound normal to you? I mean are voices distinguishable? I know it maybe different for everyone. I am hoping I will be able to hear something remotely to my old way of hearing. I am keeping my expectations in check to prevent me from being disappointed, hearing anything would be a blessing. Great topic and video Liza.

Hi Liza, It's great to have you back online I missed you . Well, I had my cochlear implant surgery this moninng and all went well. I am now in the cochlear implant family haha! I woke up kind of confused I didn't know where I was or why I was in the hopital. It all came back to me in a few seconds and I was okay. I was groggy, sore throat, and slight pain. I am home now with sore throat, ringing in the ear especially when I move and slight pain. And also for a about an hour I heard what sounded like a generator in my implanted ear. 🤣I am glad everthing turned out fine and now the real journey begins. I had a great doctor and staff at the hospital. Oh they gave me meds for pain, nausea, and antibiotics. Thank you for your all the information regarding cochlear implants, it made it much easier for helping me fully commit to having it done. For the sore throat I got some cough drops since I was coughing as well and it helps. Yes I agree that patience is needed I am finding that now I am trying to do things I normally do but I have to remember that I can't do some things and I need to rest and heal. I don't like to sit down when I am awake I like do things haha! Great video topic something we need to remind ourselves. You also bring up a good point to have a backup plan I need one myself and will work on that asap!

I am not sure if the ReSound model I will get will still use the 675's, or 13, or even rechargeable kind. If I can't use them I'll donate them. Hi Liza! It is great to see you, I think that is a great idea. I carry my 675 batteries with me all the time. I sometimes get an annoying beep, beep, beep when my batteries are dying. I carry at least 2 full packs of batteries in my backpack at all times. I also recycle my old ones as well. I am curious Do the Cochlear America 675 batteries the same batteries as the 675 hearing aids batteries? I noticed the pack of batteries you have in your hand is also labeled Implant on them. I would assume they would not since the implants may use more power than standard hearing aids. I have four extra 675 hearing aid battery packs that will last me a while. I am counting down the days of my surgery it's in 3 days. I had to schedule an ASL live person interpreter for my appointment, I really don't like the (VRS) Video Relay Service. It drop calls and takes forever to connect to a ASL interpreter. I am wondering if my doctor will give me a lollipop or stickers for being a good boy in surgery🤣🤣🤣 Great video 😀❤❤❤

Hi Liza, perfect timing for this video I have 9 days till surgery. What I found that helps me is one of those medical alert bracelet I have one that reads I'm deaf can speak and knows ASL and my to medications engraved on it. I also have a app called "Live Transcribe" that listens to spoken lanaguages and converts it to written english on my phone it's available for iOS and Android. I use it in quick situations when I can't understand someone in emergencies and non-emergencies. They have a few others ones out there as well that pretty much does the same thing. I hope this can help others out there. I made a copy of the flyer you suggested and printed it out. I will carry it in my backpack for stays in the hospital, that is a great idea. Great video. 😀❤

Hi Liza, I found this gem, and guess what? You were in it Lol. Thank you for making this video, it really does help people know what it is like coming from a person that has first hand experience. My worst fear was the mention of hitting the facial nerve. I know now they monitor the nerve to make sure it's is not disturbed. It is rare that it happens but like in all surgeries there are risks. I've mentioned in another video my activation date in 8 days after surgery! Yikes! I will take your advice and use my best judgement if my body needs more time to heal before they rush it. Hi Liza, I have some new updates on my CI surgery. Feb 6th is to go over the surgery with me and answer any final questions I have. Feb 7th is Anesthesia Pre Op, Feb 15th is Prosthesis CI surgery, Feb 23rd is Post Op, and Feb 28th is Cochlear Implant activation and the list goes on for Mapping through out the month of March. I am glad this is going to happen. Also You are going on a trip? Well I hope you have a safe flight to Canada. Please document as much photos of your trip. I can't wait to see and hear you from your trip.

Hi Liza, wow that is a story I recall you told about your hearing loss but I had no idea it was a close call with an ambulance that made you investigate your hearing loss. I had a near miss with a car riding my bike and I was almost seriously hurt or killed. I was in my mid-teens and that was my wake up call for me to do something. I believe I didn't have an issue and When I was told I needed hearing aids I thought the same thing "Those are for old people or those people" I refused to given in to hearing aids but that near accident made me think triple time. Now you would never see me without my hearing aids on except when I am sleeping. Many people take their hearing for granted, I did and with all my senses especically my eyes I take care of them. I can't afford to lose them. I was the say way with glasses too I refused to used them as well but when my hearing went I rethink about my vision health and like my hearing aids You would not see me without my glasses. granted it I am not blind far from it but I see far better with them on for seeing and reading . Thank you for sharing that story it sheds more light about my favorite host. 😀❤

Hi Liza, thank you for going over how to care for your sound processor. I was told a month is normal time but the doctor told me 2 weeks they will have me back in for activation. One week to make sure I am healing okay. I just filled out my forms for the operation and what to bring and not to bring. I will meet with the anesthesiology on what meds to hold off on the day of surgery on Feb 6th. I know what you mean by the tiny sponge like filters I used then on my old Phonak hearing aids and it was a nightmare to put them on. 🤣🤣🤣Also I remember the coil you need to just snap it in the proccessor do not twist it in. I am really looking forward to Feb 8th for my cochlear implant. I will speak with the doctor before surgery on feb 6th I had a few question I want to go over. Hello Liza, thank you for sharing and going into details of your story. I just became aware of sudden hearing loss. and no one fully understood what caused it, my hearing loss was gradual but my right ear was very sudden. I even had vertigo when it happen. My left ear was more gradual and the doctors have no clue what caused it. I was told I may need a cochlear implant on my left ear as well. I know what you mean when your world became smaller. I felt depressed, alone, angry, and frustrated. It also get so brain drained for reading people's lips. It can really take a lot out of you. I think that is one of the biggest reasons I stay to myself. Great video and a great topic.

Hi Liza, you know this topic really hit's home for me. I had a hard time trying to find a job during my early 20's due to my hearing. I seem to pick careers where hearing is a must. I had that mentality of I was fine no hearing issues here. Lol, I wanted to become a Paramedic and went to college and was trained and certified. My mom is a retired Nurse and I wanted to somewhat follow in her footsteps in the medical field. When I applied at a number of ambulance services I was turned away due to my hearing loss. I was devastated. I wish they had the technology as your friend you mentioned back then. I also took software engineering as a backup. I'm still working in that field, however my passion was the medical field. When I learned of devices that helped hearing loss people use a stethoscope I was so happy. That was the biggest hurdle I had and communication with patients. My mom asked me if I would reconsider trying again. I am giving it some serious thought. Watching your friend practicing and having hearing loss is remarkable. Thank you Liza, for relighting that spark I once had in my life. 😃❤

Hi Liza, I am so sorry you had to go through that awful experience. After careful researching Advanced Bionics, and MED-EL are now MRI-compatible according to each website and talking to representatives of each company. Cochlear America was the first to offer MRI-compatible implants. As you suggested make sure your talk with your audiologist and surgeon. Great video Liza, very informative.

Hi Liza, another great and important topic. My hearing loss kept me from little frieds I had and family. I felt so isolated and I would not engage in conversations I was the quiet one. What helped brought me out of my shell was learning ASL I taught my self at first then went to school. I became so fluent that my teacher would ask me to help tutor other students. It was the bridge that connected me with people. I was told by doctors and school officials that I should consider hearing aids. I was so against it back then. but what made me change my mind was I was almost run over by a car on my bike and I couldn't hear. I was in my mid-teens then. So I finally decided to get hearing aids but I would not wear them all the time, as I gotten older I started to wear them often to the point it no longer worked for me and I was approached by my audiologist to consider a cochlear implant and now I am a few weeks away to having surgery. I wish I would have done this years ago. It would have helped me in so many ways.

Hello Liza, wow the N8 is much smaller than the N7. From what I understand the N7 was revolutionary for being the first iPhone compatible and could connect wirelessly to devices. I know someone with an N7 and he loves it. Now he wants the N8 like the one I will be getting. Oh Liza, Did I tell you that I have a surgury date? I am scheduled for February 6, 2024. I am supposed to get a call tomorrow to confirm the time and date. I have so much to do to get ready. I need to have a manicure done. Lol 😆 Question: how long does the rechargable small and larger batteries last? Also I heard you can use disposable 675 batteries ,do you know how long it lasts? And my last question is with my current hearing aids I stream music a lot! and I my batteries last up to 5 days. If I stream on the N8, how many hours could I get from a single change? How are you Liza, I had to rewatch your video to make sure I have not missed anything. I forgot about my glasses lol arm off got it! 😄 I have a question did you experience any vertigo or tinnitus in your ears after surgery? If so did they provide you with any medication to help minimize it. I was told I may have some pain and swelling but I know everyone is different.
