project XJ: Steering box steel spacer upgrade (97-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ and most other 4.0L models)
Today on Workshop Quick Takes (wqt): After rebuilding most of our steering we were plagued with a gradually louder "pop" noise during normal use, and went looking for a broken steering box spacer brace. We didn't find one, but an upgraded brace and some other bolt checks got us to a better place than where we started.
Join us in our 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ as we tackle this popular upgrade and show you how to make it happen using basic hand tools.

    Sharing a ground concept for improved ground... One can take a residential copper ground cable solder an eye to be secured near the rear of the vehicle. From underneath with a rivet nut to which a bolt will secure the eye. The bolt protruding into the interior can function as a stud that in turn can be used as a common ground. My case use being an old Renix, grounds being one of the primary things needing to be improved. Under my rear seat is where I will have a small invertor and amplifier. Idea came to me as I was wandering about my local store that provides unclad copper ground ground cable thus my, "Why not?" Note that I tend to meander about marine supply stores as well, watching out for new materials and supplies for solutions.

    My 01 cherokee has an Auxillary cooler.. so would the feed go into the auxillary cooler, return out and into the main radiator.. and then finally returning out of main rad and back to transmission?

    • @aaronvienot
      @aaronvienot 16 дней назад

      @@brandontaylor-usedon3114 in scouting forums and the FSM diagrams, I've seen setups showing it both ways, and Chrysler did change up a few things like this depending on the year. Chase yours by following the front AW4 port up and through the line and see if it goes to the aux cooler first, or the radiator inlet, and that should prove how yours is configured.

    • @brandontaylor-usedon3114
      @brandontaylor-usedon3114 16 дней назад

      @ the feed does go straight into the aux cooler! And when it returns. I can’t quite track it.. and it definitely doesn’t return straight back to the return to the transmission.. so my only guess is the main rad is the middle man between that return from the auxiliary cooler and the return that I find going back to my transmission

    • @aaronvienot
      @aaronvienot 16 дней назад

      @brandontaylor-usedon3114 right, the theory in routing it through the radiator secondarily is that it will stabilize the output temperature of the cooled fluid so the transmission doesn't get over-cooled. Not an issue for desert climates but can be for those of us with cooler seasons.

    Thanks for sharing your adventures again, I really enjoyed it. Such a top-notch production overall, I continue to wish it would get the views it deserves. Some of the drone shots (much appreciated BTW) had this uncanny/eerie miniature/not-quite tilt-shift look to them, it was cool/weird. Intentional or just an artifact of being upscaled? Also, those slate/marble electrical mounts were insane! Time to make some reclaimed countertops... 😅

    • @aaronvienot
      @aaronvienot Месяц назад

      These shots were difficult both for subject matter and time of day. The sun was high and there were many random stipple patterns and parallel lines. The result was intense moiré (aliasing) shimmer in some scenes. I used editing hackery to calm down the drone footage but the result was a blurrier affect. After conferring with another drone videographer I concluded I have experimenting to do with ND filters and recording settings, but it won't fix everything, while software correction techniques are either arcane or expensive. Even so, I was glad I sat on this project until I had drone footage to include, because the scale of the canyon is impossible to comprehend without it.

    Quick tip, if so equipped. My '87 Pioneer, on the passenger side rear quarter behind the trim there's a small sheet metal section that's close to the exhaust that might need decoupler ("Kilmat/Dynamat") and insulation. My trim piece there is vented. That chamber behind it can act like an enclosure. Also be mindful of where suspension parts mount as those will induce noise into the passenger/cargo compartment. I need to update my "silent tour" to provide this as something to consider.

Most vehicles made since the mid-2000s use a body control module in the switch cluster to monitor switch engagement times and manage the operation response, and give a smooth, even experience that the XJ's old system can't manage. Also, have you taken apart your driver door harness and looked for cracked or broken wires in the pass-through yet? If that happens, the bearings need to be re-shimmed to make the gear pattern line up correctly. I can't help but think that rebuilding the wiring harness from scratch using all new connectors wouldn't be the better way to go. I would be inclined to break down the old cable and document the wire size/colar and pinouts on the connectors. Then I would proceed to cut wires of the appropriate color/length, crimp the pins, install the new connectors and wrap the harness with something appropriate. Rebuilding seems easier than fritzing with the existing wiring harness. What am I missing?

      @@ernestasn around here it is commonly called "fire-sleeve" and shows up on eBay with that name. I think I was using material with a 5/8-inch outer diameter (around 16mm or so). But any kind of rubber or silicone hose would work, if it has room for the wire and can flex in the limited space available between the body and the door.

    on the vacuum ball there are two nipples. One is much smaller ID than the other. which nipple is used to plumb into your source of vacuum.... the smaller one or the larger one?

    • @aaronvienot
      @aaronvienot 3 месяца назад

      We eliminated the vacuum ball, the source of vacuum is the intake manifold and it is connecting over to the relocated vacuum reservoir using factory hard lines. We attached at the "T" connector by the HVAC feeder.

    Great video. I’ve also been having problems with the fitting that goes into the tranny seeping or leaking (they’re new and the lines have never been removed) so I found an article about converting over to AN fittings that I’ve been researching to see if it’ll work for me. It’s expensive but that ~$300 is worth it to know I won’t have any blowouts on the road or especially when I eventually take it on a road trip one day. It goes without saying that my XJ has never left the county since I bought it.

    I have a coleman lantern that takes 9w weird compact fluorescent lamp fed by 8 D batteries. Has a switch that dims the lamp and also a night light setting that activates a small incandescent bulb in a yellow lens. I think I am going to start by trying to find a 12V type bulb that works.

    • @aaronvienot
      @aaronvienot 3 месяца назад

      @@dougisaak3209 if those 8 "D" cells are in series, you can skip the DC-to-DC converter. Also, try searching "12V LED halogen replacement" online or at a home improvement store. There are quite a few options for high-output LEDs and those 8 "D" cells should be good for driving a higher load than the small landscape light I used in the video.

    No need to disparage Jeep. I went to a wrecking yard and put a scale on the cargo hook in the back of an XJ. My scale maxed out at 500 lbs, which was about as much as my 8 part block and tackle would pull, and the cargo hook was still there.

    Subbed as I enjoy the content coverage you provide as can assist others with their vehicles. I am curious as to when you might be installing some decoupler and noise insulation? Been an car audio enthusiast I have to note that I will need to find a different spot for tweeters in my Renix era rig as my mirror controls are manual and use the "swizzle stick" to adjust them. Just as it also has the little triangle vent windows that your variant lacks. I use the Schoche Magic Mount on it, to hold my mobile device that has a six foot long charging cable that plugs into the USB port which now uses the "cigarette" lighter port. Meanwhile I do use Bluetooth aftermarket head unit and a offline nav app for amusement here in the PNW. Once again, thank you. Note: decoupler is 157mil Kilmat and insulation 4mm Siless closed cell foam is my current preferred mat's at this time.
