Risk of Rain Returns - A Masterfully Crafted Remaster - Indie Game Review
7:20 I totally agree with what you're saying here
Thanks! I may have exaggerated a bit, but the point still stands I think people learn best about something they're excited about, not what's technically the "most amount of info" or "takes the most technical skill"
Good stuff man!
This is a great story and amazing progress. You and have some things in common, I too started the journey in October, and dreamed of it but never challenged myself to do it, I then settled on Godot as well, for similar reasons, but also because I had a very basic understanding of python and its syntax, so GDScript would pair well. But man, you are WAY further into your journey than I am with my own, I have that 40 hour a week gig, a wife and a band that I write for, record for and perform in. I also play a lot of League haha. I've been moseying with a Udemy course on Godot as well as another on pixel art in an effort to hopefully expedite the process of learning for when I do have the time to sit down and focus. I'd like to propose something. Seeing as we are getting started at the same time, why not see if we could potentially spark up a bit of a friendship? Obviously working on our separate projects, but sharing things we have learned! My game idea I'm working on at the moment is very different from yours haha. Insight and aid I can provide that some others may not be able to, is my music knowledge. As a composer, I genuinely love writing music, and I have actually done 2 game OSTs in the past which served as my catalyst for getting involved in Game Development to begin with (dissatisfaction with the quality of game my music was attached to). We could even potentially negotiate my writing music for your games if you haven't got that sorted out quite yet. Shoot me a response here if you're down!
I had the problem of always trying to do best which made me stop doing anything at all. There are some games with thousands of lines of if statements that just work fine. It may not be the best way to do it but it is a way anyways. What I realized which took some time for me but yeah, it was that just do something no matter how just make it work and then if you can think of a better way or find a better way you can switch to that. Player never sees the code so if it works just fine its fine. First game even maybe first 10 games made by new devs doesnt have to be perfect. I'm talking about this in case there are others like me that have the same mentality, just do it noone cares if its 100 lines of if statements just make it work.
@cosion2566 thank you for this! You're absolutely right! I hope you're still learning too!
I LOVE this!! I don't know anything about creating a game, but I LOVE seeing the 'realness' of all of this
@@story_rich_games thank you friend that means so much!
Great job man! I’m currently only a year and a half into game dev myself and still loving every minute of it. I’ll be following along with you
@@NickDumar that's awesome! What are you working on these days?
Great stuff. You have some really nice functionality implemented already that looks great. I stuck around for the entire vid and appreciate hearing your advice and experiences. Keep up the good work!
@jermania7467 thanks so much, it means a lot!
The thing with state machines and any design patterns in programming is purely to make your code more organized. The only time I tend to optimize my code is when it also truly needs to be done, many people are falling into the viscous cycle of over optimizing their code when simple functionality doesn't have to go that deep. Good stuff with your progress looking forward to how it turns out!
Thanks so much, your words mean a lot! I totally get what you're saying. I've tried several SM tutorials and none (that I can remember) explain the power behind them, only that they are a strong and the "best" way to handle logic. My code is organized in a way that makes sense to me, and it functions as I need it to. At the end of the day, 99.9% of people who play a game have no idea what's under the hood. As long as it functions and does not fight against the player, it is 100% good coding. Thanks again for checking out my stuff! More to come, I hope to see you there!
All the best! But Rome wasn’t built by people who couldn’t sit through a 2-hour lecture either. You gotta do what you gotta do, and if it’s a 2-hour technical video on state machines, you gotta sit through it till it makes sense
@pushkar000 haha I suppose you're right! I'll get it one of these days 😋. For now, as a beginner, I'm satisfied with the complexity and capabilities of what I have. I've barely touched the tip of the tip of the iceberg!
Yoo! This is awesome! Keep it up!

Hey Man, great video with some nice beginner tips, awesome to see new indie game devs pop up on my feed! I've been a professional software dev for half a decade now, went self employed and started developing my own dream game about a year ago. Even though I switched to Unity by now, I'm sure we could have some fun conversations about what its been like so far :) Feel free to hit me up if you ever wanna chat a bit! Otherwise keep up the good work :D

That game at the very beginning is Overrider A hoverboard-based, action roguelike. It's still in Alpha, I just used some footage I had as B roll It's pretty fun, I might fully review it when it releases
@@KyotoCrank Oh I see! Thanks for letting me know!
Just purchased and played a couple of hours of Extra Coin after seeing this video. I'm really enjoying it so far. Definitely a hidden gem. Raw Metal looks interesting too. Might have to check that one out.
I'm so glad to hear that! Raw Metal just got a big update which has helped with the difficulty curve, I was finally able to take down the second boss!
I like the idea of having only the title of the game shown! Super quick and effective. As someone suggested I'd add a bit of footages of each one, but a short one, not 20 seconds per game. Just because this way you can have an idea of what the game is. Great list anyway! 💪
Thanks for the constructive criticism! I'll add in some short clips next time. I didn't think about how much information could translate in 10-20 seconds
@@KyotoCrank my pleasure! I did recently a top 10 and I know how hard it is 😅 too often people don't think about all the work behind a video, even if it seems "simple".
Congrats for this video! Great list, I saved King on the bridge for the future. If you like chess games, I highly suggest you Shotgun King, a chess roguelike with a great twist. I have different videos on my channel if you're curious. I'm looking forward to "I am your beast" too! Seems quite fun. For animal well I want to wait a bit for the price to be lower, while Hades 2... I can't wait 1.0 to play it 😊 Great work, you got a subscriber! 💪 An hug from another (small indie) youtuber 😉
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll be checking out your channel too
@@KyotoCrank Thank you! I hope you can find it interesting
wow, an actual video with new information and not rehashed opinions.
Haha thank you! Did any seem interesting to you? What's one of your favorite games you played this year?
@@KyotoCrank Probably from what i played in 2024 prince of persia: lost crown, half-life alyx (and mods), baldur's gate 1 with sword coast stratagem mod, raytraced doom 2 remake, SpaceChem or Chants of Sennaar. I guess none of these were indies and from this year. Tunic, Armoured core 6, Alan Wake 2 and Arkham Shadow are being played but I don't think i will manage to finish them all, but all four look very promising. From AAA either Astrobot or Elden Ring expansion, but frankly the first one is not deep enough playing on graphics, haptics and nostalgia without deeply developed game mechanics and the second one feels very unfinished (great until like 30% and entire areas feel empty and rushed). About the indies of 2024, I am not as sold as the community: while i enjoyed animal well (collected all eggs but didn't do the rest of the secrets), i didn't find it that amazing after the fantastic first 5-6 hours (hollow knight was the opposite and it just kept getting better until i platinumed it). Balatro didn't really do it for me, unlocked all decks and made it to like 3-4 level with each deck but just didn't enjoy it and i could tell basically after the second blind latest if i will get far in a run or not. Helldivers was great for 10 hours but is very repetitive and the enjoyment depends if you find good team mates. Lorelei, UFO 50, Metaphor, Unicorn Overlord, and some of your recommendations (king of the bridge, extra coin) are still on the list for next year.
and maybe dungeons of hinterberg if i have time..
Completely forgot about the Chess game, thanks for putting it on the radar again! Great list! Need to try the fourth spot too, looks fun!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed and the list helped! Let me know when you get to those games and what you think of them!
Heeey I know that guy! Lol Great list man, as expected. Can always count on Kyoto for some super cool indie games that I've never heard of! I'm excited to play Pepper Grinder, Balatro, and Animal Well. I picked those up on PS5 recently so I'll get to them early next year. And can't wait for Hades 2 when it's out of early access! I totally didn't see your number 1 coming!! Maybe I need to give that one a try...
Glad to hear you enjoyed! Let me know when you get to those games and your thoughts!
To this day i have never preordered other than his of war ragnarok. This game really taught me a lot about the person I want to be, and not to let past mistakes dictate who I am and what I do. We can always choose to make different decisions.
Absolutely! There are very many points in this game for self reflection. It's kind of surreal to feel lectured by a video game, but damn if they weren't spittin'
I quit gaming when the second gen of pkmn was released. Came back for ToTk. Most games suck but the 2018 and Ragnorak GoW games are phenomenal. Absolutely amazing games. Mimir was 10/10.
Glad to hear it! Why the break from gaming?
@@KyotoCrankit wasn’t by choice. Just circumstances. I was like 11. 20 years later BotW came out and I caught wind of it and Witcher 3. Played those then quit again, then Total lead me to Dark Souls1. Tried that and loved it. So I beat the whole souls like genre. Then my lil brother recommended GoW. 10/10. Loved it. Great video btw. Really covered how great of a game it is. I got the 100% the first play thru. Top 3 games of all time
100% on first playthrough is some real dedication! Glad you liked the video, and hope you stick around!
Game's great, people are stuck in the past thinking the game isn't as good or just straight up bad because Kratos talks now instead of killing needlessly. I don't get it, man, genuinely, I have played every GOW when I was a kid AND recently except Ascension, and still GOW 2018 and Ragnarok are by far my favorites.
Admittedly, I have not YET played the original GOWs, so I lack that kind of bias. This game and it's story is so good, how can the veil of nostalgia mess with that? Glad to hear you enjoy it as much as I do!
I think some GoW fans that played the Greek games don’t like when people say the Norse game has added so much depth to Kratos and made him so mature. When in reality the depth was always in the story, it’s just that over the course of these games character depth and themes have come to the forefront with the more narrative driven game design.
Great point! I need to play the originals to see for myself.
@@KyotoCrank there have been rumours for a remaster collection of all the Greek games. So if they are true there is your perfect chance 👌🏿

If you think this is peak game design then it means you haven’t played games in the 80s, 90s and the 2000s……
You're exactly right, I was born in the 2000s. I can only speak on what I've experienced, and among what I myself have played, this is peak game design. What game do you think has the best design? (I'm genuinely asking, not trying to debate)

Hey, I saw a you on reddit, where the post was about youtube retention rate, so I wanted to check out your channel. The video and Mic quality seems to be nice so far, but if I may say my honest opinion, your thumbnails are really bad, I did not know what video to click on, because all seemed to be boring and not eye catching in any sense. Just my opinion if you want to improve. Have fun, I subbed.
Hey, thanks for the comment! I understand what you mean about the thumbnails, and I intentionally choose to use the art that the games use. I don't want to modify it in case someone wants to see a review before they purchase, they can recognize it immediately Thanks for taking the time to check out my channel and watch video/s!

Partial voice acting is immersion breaking.
I agree. In this game, it was kind of sudden, where the dialogue would suddenly stop having sound when there was still more in the dialogue box. I wish they had removed the voice acting entirely instead of halfway doing it.
I honestly love Sanabi so much. From the charming pixel art to the heart wrenching story, it’s truly a masterpiece.

💪 'PromoSM'
It's a very unconventional "rougelike" that it's leans towards progression rather than replayability. It's a grind to get to the final boss but when you do get to it and beat it, it's done, it's over. It's not your typical rougelike where you can kill that "final" boss in your first run but then will have to kill it hundreds of times until you get bored.
Unreal how much detail you put into those reviews! You really put in the work! 👍
This looks and sounds a bit rough, but man, the fact that the game was made by only 3 people is incredibly impressive. If I end up liking Balder's Gate 3, maybe I'll give this a try someday. Great work, man!
It's not perfect that's for sure. Plenty of signs that it's an indie project, but I'm sure it's great for the right people. Like I mentioned, many of the steam reviews are positive, so maybe I'm just a *little* biased. As for BG3, it's definitely worth a play. I'm a huge D&D nerd, so it was perfect for me. Let me know what you think of it when you get around to it. It is quite long though, especially if you like tying up every loose end and finding as many secrets as possible.
i've been looking everywhere for theories or reviews on this game and i have literally found none..🥲🥲i almost gave up but i tried searching on google and found your video, so lucky!! i have some questions, in the part where we are trying to escape from the fields, there's a part in the maze where a tent appears (?) and there is a note talking about a camper writing to another camper (who's name is anna) asking her for a walk. also in the parents room after you take the basement key, if you went upstairs and not to the basement you can find a picture of anna with a heart on it, any idea who anna is? thank u so much for your awesome review!! 💗💗
Hey thanks for bringing this up. Unfortunately this is something I missed. If there's no other mention of this Anna in the house other than the picture you mentioned, it can't be another child of the family which was my initial thought when you mentioned this. There was mention of the local high schoolers walking through the fields after school, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say they could potentially go on a "walk" which could be code for smoking and drinking in secret. Dean, the character you play as, is under 21 and has a drinking problem, so it's already a topic the dev touches on. A note in the father's study mentioned that this daughter was struggling to make friends. So perhaps when she made her first friend with this girl Anna, she became much more attached than "just friends", and being from a point in time where homosexuality isn't as accepted as today, and in a rural and probably Christian area, she was afraid to tell her family about this secret crush. To my understanding, the monster within the house is an embodiment of grief and depression, so if/when this Anna girl goes missing, that could have been the tipping point for the daughter in the house, to begin her drastic downward spiral. This is just my speculation without the proper context, but it's fun to theorize! I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
I should mention another 50 games to look forward to. UFO 50 is coming later this year, and it’s a collection of 50 retro inspired games by some really talented developers!
I recommend FTL : faster than light, and spellrogue
Such a useful 2 and a half minutes.

Thanks for your comment. After going back over my list, I see that only 2 games could not be considered indie, which is my mistake. Enter the Gungeon and Pentiment. Thanks for watching the video long enough to reach the P's!
