Lose fat + stay lean effortlessly (Leptin resistance, insulin and inflammation)
Weight loss doesn't have to be a struggle. Your hypothalamus, that regulates your body fat stores, does not want you to be carrying around excess fat. However leptin resistance may lead to a breakdown in weight regulation and may help to explain the current obesity epidemic. Loosing weight involves reversing leptin resistance by addressing insulin resistance and inflammation and that involved cutting out overly processed foods and will also be helped by time restricted eating. Also mentioned are calories in vs calories out, a calorie restricted diet, the protein leverage hypothesis and micronutrient leverage hypothesis.

Cholesterol levels of Hadza hunter-gatherers (my cholesterol U-turn?)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.Месяц назад
The Hadza have been found to have low levels of both LDL and total cholesterol. The tsimane also have low levels (and also low levels of HDL). These represent populations that avoid diseases of civilisation / chronic disease, and that includes atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. I summarise the orthodox view of LDL in this video and wonder if there is robust enough evidence to challenge it....

How pregnancy due dates ruin healthy childbirth

    Just think of how wonderful it would be if the commercial farmland soil was not such a mess and nutrient dense. I had an allotment in the UK for seven years before returning to the US. Years of building up the soil and not using poisons for weed control and fertilization, just beautiful. The people with other plots who would come by and offer to spray my 'weeds' with Roundup (and used it profusely) are sadly no longer above ground to enjoy life. My 'weeds' were food and used for fertilizer tea. Need some area to build another garden and start over again but my life is unfortunately nomadic these days :(

    I can attest to the effectiveness of post-dinner teeth cleaning routines - once I've flossed, brushed and finished with the waterpik nothing's going to tempt me to have to do all that again. That's one of the best habits I've picked up in the past couple years along with tracking what I eat in an app (Cronometer) that tracks micronutrients as well as macros. It was truly shocking to see how nutrient poor my low fat, lowish protein, high carb diet had been even though I've always been a good home cook/never really went too much for ready meals and such. If you're not tracking you really have no idea whether you're getting all you need for your age and gender.

    How is your hypothalamus affected by menopause? I've been reading alot about how loss of hormones, especially estrogen can affect the brain. I've been eating pretty well and fasting and working out 4-5 x a week. I haven't seen much results on the scale although I feel stronger and my body composition has changed a bit.

    • @drphilipbosanquet
      @drphilipbosanquet 20 дней назад

      Good question. Oestrogen does seem to be involved in weight regulation and may impact leptin signalling. (Hot flushes also may be related to changes in hypothalamus). Menopause seems to be a time when there is a decline in tolerance to everything modern (eg stress, poor sleep, overly processed foods etc).

    The key is prioritising nutrient dense, satiating foods high in protein and animal fats. All livestock animals can and do go feral which is a huge issue in my country. Chickens, turkeys, geese, cattle, sheep, deer, pigs, goats, horses - all have feral populations here in NZ. None of the cultivated plants we use for food are capable of doing the same so their 'natural-ness' is questionable. Especially when some zoos have stopped feeding their frugivores cultivated fruits due to them causing obesity and dental issues in the animals.

    How do we really know the Hadza have no cardiovascular disease or atherosclerosis? Most conclusions are based on small samples (fewer than 30-50 people) and indirect assumptions. No objective tests like CAC scores or EKGs have been done. While their active lifestyle, low cholesterol, normal BP suggests low risk, there’s little hard data. It could even be natural selection at work-if you don’t have a healthy heart, you can’t hunt, leading to extinction.

  • @Niemen88
    @Niemen88 29 дней назад

    People aged 40-50 with optimal health markers have only about a 5% chance of a major heart event in the next 10 years, even with high LDL. Risk calculators tend to overestimate. Traditional groups like the Maasai and Hadza have low heart disease rates, but they generally don’t live past 60. Their shorter lifespans, mainly due to infections, naturally limit how long they’re at risk for heart disease, making comparisons with modern populations-who live longer-tricky.

  • @Niemen88
    @Niemen88 29 дней назад

    Why not study the Maasai vs. the Hadza to compare their diets and health outcomes? The Maasai have a larger population, consuming a diet rich in meat, milk, and animal fat, showing relatively low cholesterol but high CAC scores, yet with a similar life expectancy and low cardiovascular morbidity. Both groups share key similarities, like low BMI and active lifestyles. The Hadza, on the other hand, are a small nomadic group of around 300 people who still follow a hunting and gathering lifestyle. Due to their small population and nomadic nature, accurate records of births and deaths may be difficult to obtain. Maybe they don't live long enough to develop atherosclerosis-how was this even evaluated?

    LDL is not a cholesterol. HDL is not a cholesterol. The cholesterol inside LDL and HDL are the same molecule. Same substance. In other words there are no “good” and “bad” cholesterol. As you know LDL and HDL are carriers of triglycerides, proteins and cholesterol. please stop talking about “LDL cholesterol”.

    What does “Adjusted HR “ mean on the graph? What does moving from say 1.0 to 1.2 mean? If lowering LDL is the answer the NNT (numbers needed to treat ) for statins don’t look that good apart from the side effects and everything else seems not totally proven to be effective even if general health improvements can be no bad thing.

    Am I the only one to notice that these people have rather dark skin? Could it be that having dark skin walking under the tropical sun and low serum cholesterol levels are somehow connected?Sounds crazy? Maybe not so much if you realize that I live at 50 degrees north where I have to make my D3 for a few months of the year out of the cholesterol in my skin.Could it be that higher serum cholesterol could be helpful and even imperative in this effort?None of this is a concern for these beautiful black people whose genes did not have to adapt to living at 50N like mine. Just a thought.
