Five Horizons
Добавлен 11 фев 2012
fivehorizonsforever@gmail.com Please subscribe! Hi, I'm Jeff and I love to backpack, camp, and day hike. I have a Chevy Express cargo van (Bart) that I converted into a campervan to help me explore and enjoy the outdoors.
Backpacking is my first love. I feel it’s one of the best ways to really connect with nature, the earth and yourself. I have some long distance hiking under my belt. LT 05’, AT 09’, 800 miles of the southern PCT in 2012 and the CT in 2023.
Car camping is a great way to enjoy the natural world while being able to bring along more of the comforts from home.
Day hiking is very enjoyable when you don’t have a lot of time to get outside but can still throw on a backpack and hit up a local trail.
I started this channel because I wanted to keep a video journal of sorts, of the backpacking, van camping and day hiking trips I go on.
Well, if you read this far, thanks again and happy trails!

Camping the Moose River Plains Wild Forest in the Adirondacks.
My friend Jason and I spent a long weekend camping in Moose River Plains in the beautiful Adirondacks.
The Moose River Plains Wild Forest is part of the 80,000 acre Moose River Plains Complex, a collection of public lands crossed by more than 40 miles of old dirt logging roads. There are 130 miles of marked trails within the complex, as well as more than 100 primitive roadside tent sites, 65 waterbodies, 100 miles of streams, and a fire tower on Wakely Mountain.
The dirt roads running throughout the complex are rough in places. In the Moose River Plains Wild Forest, Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road is a 23-mile long seasonal access road that's often used by vehicles and mountain bikers. Some...

Worlds End State Park camp. Hike on the Canyon Vista Trail.
Просмотров 2753 месяца назад
My friend Jason and I spent a weekend camping at Worlds End State Park and did a hike on the Canyon Vista Trail and Cold Run loop extension. It was a great hike with lots of moss covered boulders, scenic vistas, and beautiful waterfalls. Worlds End State Park is a real gem and definitely worth exploring! When the state acquired the property in 1932, it was a stump filled wasteland created from ...
Hike to Sunfish Pond in the DWG, camp in the Delaware State Forest, and burrito bowls!

I spent a Saturday hiking in the Delaware Water Gap climbing to Sunfish Pond, then drove to a nearby camp to spend the night in the Delaware State Forest (campsite # E013 CCC Camp) where I cooked up some delicious burrito bowls, played some guitar and flew the drone. The Delaware Water Gap is a beautiful recreation area run by the National Park Service with plenty of hiking and biking trails, t...
Weiser State Forest camp, Pinnacle Hike, and Tortilla Pizza
Просмотров 1865 месяцев назад
In this video I camp in Weiser State Forest and head out on a hike to the Pinnacle, best view in Pennsylvania on the Appalachian Trail. It was a beautiful late March day with blue sky. When back at camp I cook up a tortilla pizza for dinner and crash in the campervan (Bart). The next morning I make a tasty breakfast of toast with peanut butter, banana, agave, and cinnamon. Thanks for joining me...
Cold winter hike in Marsh Creek State Park
Просмотров 1427 месяцев назад
I spent a Sunday hiking in the snow at Marsh Creek State Park. It was clear blue skies for most of the day, but the wind picked up later, and it got pretty chilly. Back at the van, I got warmed up and made myself a grilled cheese sandwich with some yummy tomato soup! Marsh Creek is a very nice state park with lots of hiking trails, a reservoir for boating and a swimming beach in the summert...
500 miles in 11 minutes on the Colorado Trail.

On my 500 mile thru hike of the Colorado Trail I took lots of “walk away” shots. So I decided to put them all together in a video with some peaceful classical guitar in the background. “If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again- If you have paid your debts and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and ar...

Pinchot State Forest Weekend Camping.

This is a video of of a weekend camping trip I took with my nephew (Vaughn) and my friends (Sara and Troy) to the Pinchot State Forest! We had good weather aside from a few sprinkles of rain and enjoyed good food at camp and swimming at nearby Gouldsboro State Park. Getting kids away from screens and into nature is a great way to show them that there is an amazing world outside to explore! Kids...

Great Video. My daughter and I hiked to sones pond from route 220. Ya shoulda shown some of the hard steep parts from the pond to the parking lot. The trail is hard. We enjoyed the journey
Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment. The Loyalsock trail has some rough sections that's for sure!
The view of the forest is so beautiful and peaceful, camping here is absolutely fantastic
Thanks a lot for watching the video and leaving a comment! 👍
How long did it take you to get to the waterfall?
I don't know why my channel was not subscribed because I watch your video's! Everytime I see someone do this trail I get more inpired to backpack it myself! Hopefully next year I will do it!
Hi Darcy, definitely hike this trail! In my humble opinion its the best backpacking trip in Pennsylvania. There are lots of side trails so you can make shorter (or longer) loops.
An axe and bare feet can lead to issues...
Ha ha, yup, don't want to chop off any toes...lol That would ruin a trip for sure.
Moose have been known to frequent Helldiver Pond.
Was really hoping we would see one, but we did see a beaver pretty close and Jason swears a beaver bumped the canoe! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Nice playing. I wish I learned how to play guitar. I know it’s a ukulele, but it’s the same concept. 👍
Thanks Craig! It's never to late to learn, you could get a ukulele and learn how to play from the many You Tube ukulele channels!
NICE 🤘
Thanks for the compliment and leaving a comment! 🤘
absolutely sick man, reminds me of the type of melody portishead would use 🔥
So glad you liked it! Thanks for leaving a comment!
Beautiful wild forest adventure
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Hello outdoors friend. I love camping and spending time in nature. Thank you for sharing your camping weekend experience. It makes me want to go out there in nature. 😊
Thanks so much for watching the video and leaving a comment! Time spent in nature is never wasted time.
This looks like a great vacation. The lake was beautiful. That privvy out in the open near the lake was so funny. Not used to seeing them like that. Usually there is some type of enclosure.
Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment! Yeah, no privacy with that bathroom…lol The lakes there are really beautiful, definitely worth the drive to get there.
Hi I enjoyed your video. Someday we'd love to get out to Moose River Plains. Can't beat the beauty, peace and quiet.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Definitely make the time to visit. The town of Old Forge is a great place to stop and get any last minute supplies before entering MRP from the west. 👍
Looked like a nice trip. Dinner looked good. What was that rice cooker pot? I've never seen one like that. Worthington was the first trip we took with our bus and we did the Sunfish Pond hike. I went back up there this past Nov for muzzleloader season and did a hunt and camp video. Climbing up that mountain in a Pennsylvania Tuxedo sucked lol.
Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! That pot is a small pressure cooker. Once pressure is built up you can take it off the heat (to save propane) and it keeps cooking. Were you successful in your muzzleloader hunt? I used to hunt up in Tioga county. Got a buck one year. Pennsylvania tuxedo? Not sure what that is…lol
@@fivehorizons5295 I'm going to have to look into that small pressure cooker. I like the idea of having one for camping. No luck with the hunt. I only saw a small buck the day before the season opened. PA Tuxedo is the old Woolrich red and black plaid wool hunting jacket and pants. My buddy hunts in Tioga. He bagged a monster buck about 10 or so years ago.
Loved your videos. I am starting trail in a couple of weeks, and though I am a couple of decades older, I found your pace and decisions to stop when you were tired very reassuring. Unlike the younger crowd doing 20+ miles per day, I am in the 10-15 mile class. I am not sure I can eat as many mashed potatoes as you did :) but am curious about how much weight you lost on the trail and how many days is took you to finish. Best of luck on your future hiking trips.
Thanks a lot for watching! I hope it helps you with your Colorado Trail adventure. I used to bang out 20's when I was younger but at 47 years old I'm not letting my stupid ego get me injured. I'm right there with you in the 10 to 15 mile class. I love to hike for so many reasons and banging out more miles than my body can safely handle isn't on of them. Hiking 20 or 30 miles every day is impressive but to quote Teddy Roosevelt "Comparison is the thief of joy" I lost about 15 lbs, I got sunburnt more than I expected, and yes I got tired of mashed potatoes...lol Don't recall how long it took me to finish...5-6 weeks. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! It means a lot! Best of luck on the CT! Definitely stop and smell the flowers (figuratively and literally) No need to rush it, it's just too beautiful ⛰🌄🗻🏔
@@fivehorizons5295 Thank you! Definitely working on "smelling the roses" I am on no timeline since retirement and need to act accordingly! Hard to get used to after hikes on a work based timeline. Six weeks is what I expect, as I want to have a few zero days in those mountain towns. Thanks for the reply
I bet the privy was fun. The pond looked beautiful with all the pine trees in the background. Having it all to yourself made it even better. How did the water feel? Wow the privy by beaver lake was way worse than the first one. Absolutely no privacy. Now that was a huge snapping turtle. We used to find ones like that when I was a kid. Looks like a fun trip. 👍7
Thanks Craig for watching and leaving a comment! I really appreciate it! Yeah the privy’s there weren’t the best but it beats having to dig a hole…lol The water in Beaver Lake was so clean and refreshing! Having a natural lake all to ourselves in a wilderness area is definitely something special. I need to make that happen more often! That snapping turtle was running pretty fast(for a turtle) 🐢 When he saw us, he stopped and didn’t more at all… Thanks again for commenting!
Swimmin’ in Beaver Lake sounds like the title of a long lost rock album. The water looked awesome 🤘🏼
“Swimming in Beaver Lake” Does indeed sound like an old rock song 🎵 Maybe from Spinal Tap…lol Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a comment!👍
At 11:15 into the video; not cicadas. Pretty sure they are a type of tree frog. Google search says they are a Spring Peeper (hehe).
Captivating from start to finish man, storytelling is flawless as always. Love this episode.
Thanks again for watching the video and leaving a comment! 👍
Loved all the scenery. Us east coasters are always so easily blown away by the openness of the west, but it is so beautiful. I like that you share your frustrations too. Lighters don't work when expected making for unforeseen adaptations, cold soak soup turning out to be blech, the hole in the food stuff sack, etc. It's a realistic experience and informs those who wish to get more into backpacking of what issues they may encounter in their future adventures. We'll done video!
Thanks again for watching the video and taking the time to comment! The east has its fair share of beautiful places but the American West is on a whole other level! Thanks again for commenting, it means a lot! 👍
I am planning a trip for 10 on that stretch. Do the sites fit about ten tents?
Best of luck on your river trip. Of the 3 sites I seen on my trip, only 1 was large enough for 10 tents 🏕️ I would do some research and even call the park and talk to a ranger.
@@fivehorizons5295 Thank you!
Gossomer gear. LOL, the dude has a clue. He's just on a stroll!!
Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment! He’s a good dude to hike with that’s for sure. 👍
Worlds End is great State Park. 70 some sites, but still feels like a small park. Great hiking, fishing, and swimming at and near the park. Really loved the scenery and music for the video. Makes want to get back to the outdoors 🌲. Thanks for the video and inspiration!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Yeah, when picking out the music I searched for “grunge” 🤘for the hiking part! Worlds End really is one of the great Pennsylvania State Parks. Thanks again 👍
Awesome time lapse at Canyon Vista, i love that trail! You get a little bit of everything on that trail . Worlds End has got to be one of the best base camp state parks for hiking in PA. And i have to say you have mastered the art of "eating good in the woods" lol. Always enjoy your videos brother!
Thanks Walt! I always appreciate when you leave a comment. It means a lot. I’ve been wanting to do that Canyon Vista Trail for a while and finally made it happen. I really enjoyed cooking while camping then I realized, what the heck, might as well film it…😊
Beautiful burritos😜 very interesting hike ,crazy rock formations.I’m glad you had a friend to share this beautiful country side. The soup looks bomb😝 you should b a tour guide to all the parks ✌️
Thanks so much for watching the video and taking the time to comment! A tour guide? Now that would be a great job!😀
Nice trails, Great views. Have you heard how Tacoma Travel is doing?
Hi there! Yeah, Tacoma Traveler and I camped in the same campground a few years back. Last I talked to her she said she was not making You Tube videos anymore. I’ll send her a text to see how she’s doing. She was really a great person to hang out with! Thanks for leaving a comment! I really appreciate it! 👍
Okay. I understand. Was just wondering.
Looked like good food friends and fun
Thanks again for watching the video and leaving a comment! 👍
I’ve heard of this state park and seen a few RUclips videos on it. I have not been there yet though. Looks like you all had a great time. I thought you were going to tickle that rock to see what was going to happen. 👍
Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment! Definitely explore Worlds End when you get a chance! I should have tickled the rock…lol😆
I think it is a cremation oven. Really well done video. Loved the music, the scenery, the cooking sequence. It looks like you had a great time there.
Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! It means a lot. 👍
Very nice. I wish I knew how to play.👍
Thanks Craig! It’s never too late to learn 🎶
❤
Nice video, I'm about 4 miles from the lake. I've been there many times, kayaking and biking.
Another great cooking edit. I love it! That looked really tasty too. Too bad about the road noise overnight but a nice hike you had!
Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment! I’m enjoying cooking at camp these days. I’ve been thinking about getting a camp oven and do some baking! Looking forward to your next adventure too. 👍
That is an awesome waterfall. I’ve never been to sunfish pond though. The campsite seems decent and dinner looked delicious. Nice little trip. 👍
Thanks Craig for watching and leaving a comment! The Delaware Water Gap has great trails definitely worth checking out. 👍
Cool to see you adding new features with each video. Awesome guitar and drone shots 🤘🏼
Thanks! I’d like to fly the drone more but you are not allowed to fly it some places. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment!
Beautiful waterfall, your attention to detail is amazing. Wow cooking skills are great 😋 thanks for sharing ✌️
Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment! 😊
Nice area.
Thanks again for watching the video and leaving a comment! 🙂
@@fivehorizons5295 you’re welcome
Had a feeling you wouldn’t be sleeping in the tent😂! Loved the views. Always find them peaceful and humbling. Dinner looked tasty. Do.
Lol, yeah BART the van is just to comfortable to pass up sometimes. The pizza was tasty but I think next time I want to try to make pizza dough from scratch. Do indeed. 😁
Loved the tree hug. The fall into was like greeting a long unseen friend. Gave me a big smile.
Thanks brother! Yup, I hug trees...lol I like the name "Blue Marble" for a channel name!
Thanks Jeff, love your videos and this series was beautiful. Most important question: did YOU get a trail name?! :)
@@melanie3400 Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment! My trail name is Pennsylvania Jeff (Penn-J). I got it when I did a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail way back in 2009. (I didn’t do the You Tube thing back then) My fellow travelers thought Pennsylvania Jeff was too many syllables so they shortened it to Penn-J. I was open to a new trail name on this CT thru hike but it didn’t happen. Thanks again for leaving a comment, it means a lot. 🙏
Very cool. Such beautiful views. How was the pizza? Cool guitar playing. I didn’t know that was you until you showed yourself. 👍
Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! The pizza was super delicious, thin crust style. 🍕
I never understand why people gotta be so darn loud when out in the woods. You can almost always hear folks before you can see them. That campsite #4 looked pretty nice hmmm ... That giant rock pile at the Pinnacle has grown over the years too lol. You always look like you are eating well on your trips! Awesome music too, looked like a nice little overnighter!
Thanks Walter! Yeah, some people just don't possess proper etiquette when in the forest. There are some really nice campsites in the Weiser SF. Would be a good hike to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary from those sites too! Thanks again for watching the video and commenting, it really means a lot!
Loved the cooking segments! So you mixed all that together at home and then dried it? The finished product looked good! Decent hike with a big view then pizza in the van! And I dug those swampy blues licks to end the night with that footage! Thanks for letting us come along!
Thanks man! Yeah, I’ve been enjoying cooking more these days. I did some dehydrating and made a big batch of lentil soup then Taco rice, salsa and refried beans. The freezer is full of dehydrated meals! I hope I eat them all before they go bad…lol Thanks for the compliment on the swampy blues licks! 🤘 Thanks again for checking out the video and commenting 👍
I love the beginning with Picture in Picture 😂slept in van anyway ,oh swinging music love it. Eureka. Made it to the top😁what a view😎 oh that pizza😜 beautiful guitar 🎸 2 muckbangs 👌 It was a great overnight trip ✌️🥰
Thanks again for watching the video and leaving a comment! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Gorgeous work my friend, you presented this so nicely!
Thanks so much for checking out the video and leaving a comment!
I have fly fished off that lake. I might be hiking to that park this fall. Not too far from it in SE PA
Nice! I never fly fished before but always found it interesting. Marsh Creek State Park has some nice trails that's for sure!
Colorado will be in the near future for me. I am grateful that Lehigh valley airport now has direct flights to Denver. You got so many great shots here. You can see so far out in many of them. It’s hard to get these types of shots in PA. And wow, 500 miles is a whole lot of ground to cover. This was a great silent hiking film. Nicely done. 👍🥇
Best of luck in Colorado! Absolutely beautiful country out there! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Hello my friend! ❤Very good video! 🌷Great job!👍 Good luck and good mood🌺
Thanks a lot for watching the video and commenting!
The sound that you thought was cicadas was what they call locally, "Peepers." These are extremely small tree frogs that make a peeping sound... as you heard. Loved the video. I'm going to do this soon in 2024.
Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment. Best of luck on your hike! I’ll probably hike the AFT again sometime. It’s a great trail!
I could do without the loud music, but otherwise a good adventure video.
