Hi Everyone!
I have been an artist since I can remember but I am a recently new student to watercolor. These videos are my explorations and I look forward to sharing my work with you, along with tips and tutorials on how I create my pieces. I am always in a constant state of learning and improving. While I have over 35 years of experience, I will always consider myself a student of art. I am in no way perfect or an expert and find myself messing up a lot, but I enjoy the process and through my videos I just hope you will be inspired to create your own works and I look forward to seeing your creations!

A Light at the End of the Road | Watercolor Speed Painting I'm really enjoying working on landscapes right now. Being a portrait artist I have always focused on the little details in my paintings to get the look of a subject just right, but I'm loving how with landscapes you are more working with broad strokes to give a perspective of an object from far away. Color and shape. Does it get much b...

This came out so cute!
I like your tutorial. Hope you can show your palet during painting as well next time.
Thank you so much for your kind words and suggestion! I will do my best to be sure to include it next time for sure 👍🏻
Thank you so much for sharing this detailed video. Great job and certainly helped me. Wanted that 3D affect and this has it and showed me how. I struggled with the nostrils but your tutorial made it truly so much easier for me. I also enjoyed your explanations and the steps. Great job and thank you again. I'm 72 years young and love to learn.
Oh, I am so happy to read your message and I am so happy that my video helped you out in your creative process! It has been a little while since I posted any videos, but you’re kind message has sparked a little something inside of me and I will probably post up another video or tutorial here before too long. 🥰 truly thank you so much for your kind words. You really made my day! It looks like I’m replying to this message from one of my other accounts lol oops! 😊🙃🤦🏼♀️
@@520kudra Well sweetheart your reply sure blessed me too and I’m so tickled . And as a believer my job is to try and leave folks I meet in my life better than I found them. So may I encourage you to continue with giving of your talents. You’re truly a joy to watch and I learned so many things. God bless you abundantly today, Ephesians 3:20 style. 🩷 You’re wonderful and thanks again!
Great demonstration, but you must speak up and not murmur to yourself!
This was unscripted and in the moment. You get what it is and who I am unapologetically - murmurs, ums and all…. 😂 I will keep that in mind the next time
a. I love that you make just as much noise as I do when you rinse your brush 🤪 b. Fabulous finished eye c. Love the DrPhMartins watered down glaze along the top there! In all the time I've been painting eyes, I've never worked out to water down that specific white for this specific job! It's perfect. Finishing off a commission tomorrow so will throw this "tip" at it. So, many thanks 👍🏻
Haha I am so happy my brush noise didn’t distract or annoy you! 😂 I absolutely love doing the watered down white wash technique, I somehow discovered that one day while messing around and it really brings some realism to the finished eye and adds an almost 3d quality to the look IMO. Thank you so much for letting me know! I am truly so happy to have helped! 😊🙏🏻
Wonderful Love this thank you! Looks just like our 'Blue' black lab❤ I am painting a beautiful painting of our 'Buck' a super fluffy Husky but I'm not just finished yet I Need help figuring out adding More depth to the whites grays and the blacks ....Could you paint a Husky ??? If you want??? Or give advice?? My black doesn't have much depth might just need more layers?? I done lots but I want to do true justice. I can send you the picture too. THANK YOU AWESOME BEAUTIFUL WORK! ❤❤❤❤
Great but omg the loud sound of you rinsing the brush is annoying. Maybe move the mic
Thanks for your feedback! I don’t have a pro set up so it is what it is. This was recorded many years ago. Moving forward I will take your comments into consideration 🤷🏼♀️
My sister has a white lab …did you start with very light indigo then build up from that?
Hello! Yes for the shadow side, the lighting in the reference image was very shaded so much of the pup has the blue undertone, if the reference photo was more lit or in the sun likely I would have made it would have more a golden undertone
Genius!
Aw thank you! I appreciate your kind words! 😊🙏🏻
Beautiful dog. Beautiful painting. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Entre el hermoso viaje al que nos llevas con tan linda historia, y la melodía armónica de imágenes y colores, solo puedo decir que hay Un paraíso en tu mente y duendecillos en tus manos para ayudar a la creación de tan maravillosa obra . ❤ gracias!
Gorgeous eye Thank you❤
Great video! Thank you
So happy you enjoyed! Thank you so much and wishing you a wonderful day!

Thank you so much! So happy you could hear me ok too!! 🙏🏻😊
This was very helpful. Thanks!
I’m so happy to have helped! Thank you for letting me know and wishing you a wonderful day! 😊🙏🏻
Very difficult to hear you
Sorry, I only had my phone for a microphone. 🤦🏼♀️ I’m also trying to figure out what to say as I’m doing it. Lol 😂 i never talk while I paint. It’s hard to do both at the same time!
Great tutorial but you’re very difficult to hear.
This is was my first speaking tutorial. I was using my phone mic, didn’t have a better option available. Sorry for any difficulties in hearing me!
wonderfully executes eye in watercolor Amazing layering technique
Thank you! I am happy you found it helpful! 😊

So beautiful and well painted!! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I think that the painting without a background enhances the dog, and the detail of the ribbon is adorable and brilliant. 💖
It's to fast.... 😬
Thank you for letting me know! I’m sorry for the speed. There is a feature in RUclips where you can slow down the videos, but I will work on making them slower moving forward for sure! 👍
Thanks 👍😃
Outstanding use of the medium! You are very talented and I look forward to viewing your other videos. The shading/values are soooo important!

Lol thank you!! Happy you enjoyed!!
Love it ! I want to do dogs since I do search and rescue with my dogs and have fry with great dogs too. Love love love your work. I know that the watercolor can be learned. Not a big deal it's your drawings that count!! They are so right ON !!
Oh wow!!! Thank you so much for your encouragement and support!! It’s been a while since I’ve been able to post up anything but I am going to get around to it again soon. Wishing you a wonderful day and thank you again!

I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for your kind words. Wishing you a beautiful day ❤️🙏
👏👏👏
Wonderful and a different way to paint dog's eyes.keep up the great work. Kathryn
Wonderful!!!! Keep up the great videos.
Thank you for the demo and for the commentary as well. I just walked away in disgust from a project I’ve been fighting for three days as I just couldn’t get it right so what you said about frustration etc was very helpful. I wanted to tear it up but I just put some glassine over it, labeled it “disaster” and am keeping it for reference when I want to see how not to do the same thing. (black curly coated dogs). Your videos are very helpful because some teachers make it over complicated and if I fuss overmuch trying to follow sometimes the piece gets overworked. The direct and simple approach you have is very good at conveying necessary information. Makes it easier to remember. Thank you and please continue making videos. I will watch them and learn and I value you as a resource.
I’m so happy to be of help for you!! I completely understand how you can feel, so many times I’ve been brought to tears over a piece that gives me a hard time and I always have to remember to take a step back, breathe and not be too harsh on myself. It’s all a learning process and mistakes are where we make the biggest leaps in learning! I will definitely put up more videos soon, my work has had me working a lot lately so I haven’t been able to paint much but I’m sure before very long I will get another posted up soon. Thank you so much for your beautiful comment and Wishing you a most wonderful night! If you ever have a topic you’d like me to cover please let me know! I’m happy to try to help however I can. Sending big hugs and happy painting!!!
This is beautiful, but I need to see step-by-step, not speed, painting. This doesn't teach me.
Thank you for the feedback! This was just something I recorded for show more so than instruction. I have a few more horses coming up and when I record them I will include some instructions to them for you. My teaching style is more loose though, I don’t follow the traditional step by step processes because I tend to not follow the same steps for each painting I do. Which in some ways is nice to know since there are many ways to approach and complete a painting. The biggest thing I can offer for guidance on this one is drop base colors as close to the reference as possible, exaggerating their color, so if something looks deep dark brown I use purple or burgundy for example. As you add layers and overlapping colors to create depth, use an short square oil paint brush with water to lift colors away and create highlights. I know it’s not much for now but I will get some others up here before too long that will provide you with more instruction and guidance.
You’re mesmerising to watch Jess 😍
Oh wow thank you!!! Happy you enjoy! 🙏🥰
Thank you such a find so inspiring 😀🐴
🥰 you are so very welcome! Thank you for enjoying! 🙏❤️👍
Beautiful
thank you so much!
This is wonderful! And so helpful. How would you do a chocolate labrador. What colors would you suggest?
Thank you so much! Oh chocolate labs are such beautiful dogs! Browns tend to show purples, burgundy’s, greens, oranges and yellows in them. Try to blur your eyes when looking at the image you are referencing and just absorb the colors... are they cool or warm? Do they have a tint underneath the brown that lends to one color over another? Shadows tend to be cooler and highlights tend to be warmer, but it is possible to have a warm shadow and a cool highlight as well, so you just have to study your subject :) I hope this helps!!
Just found you. You are awesome 👏
Aww thank you so much!! Happy you enjoy!! I look forward to sharing more videos with you soon!
Wow. This is one handsome jay. Thank you for sharing, Jess!
Thank you so much! 🙏❤️ I think I may be getting back into oils here now 😂
Very nice
Thank you!!
This is great - thank you. I have never done a painting all at one time. I would like to walk away for hours without ruining it because the paint has dried. So, please advise about rewetting technique in order to continue painting later without undesirable hard edges?
Allowing it to dry will end up creating some harsh edges but the best thing about watercolor is that to soften them, just add some water and gently rub the area with a brush... like a short square oil painting brush that has density and roughness, and you can lift away some of the previous watercolor to soften the edge or lighten up spots. I will creat a tutorial here soon for you showing how to do that. 👍
What is a "neutral tint" that you refer to for the darks on the second step on the nostrils? Since you used Indigo for the base would that be somewhere in an orange? I know the colors across the color wheel from a certain color can neutralize that first color, but I am lost right now and can't think straigt! lol
It’s a shade of black that I use from Daniel Smith paints called Neutral Tint. danielsmith.com/neutral-tint-15ml-tube-daniel-smith-extra-fine-watercolor/
Indigo is more a dark blue shade of black in the Daniel Smith line, more like a navy. Often times blacks will reflect a blue undertone and so I like to start with a blue base and add more real blacks to it like Neutral Tint. This way the blues end up in the highlights of the darks. I hope that helps!
@@jesskristenart5784 it does, yes...thank you SO much!
