Grinder-Cam: TP 52 Glory on Round the County 2016
48° North Editor, Joe Cline, wears an Intova camera as he works the front grinder pedestal during the 2016 Round the County Race aboard John Buchan's TP 52 "Glory." This video is from Day One, from Lydia Shoal to Roche Harbor, traveling south-then-west-then-north (clockwise) this year. It was blowing stink at the start, the breeze dropped for a while, built to 20+ again with big waves as we passed Davidson Rock, and went to zero at the finish. After rounding the turn at Davidson Rock, we had a fouled spinnaker hoist due to a snagged martin-breaker on the spinnaker tack. Letterbox recovery and then A4 back up. We won the day, but found a hole early in Day Two, and left the door open for tw...

Conor and Bill, of Race to Alaska's Team Pure and Wild, were generous enough to take me out sailing last night in some awesome conditions for one of their last training sails before heading north for the start of R2AK. Also on board was local multi-hull specialist, Dave Wilhite. This really incredible boat, a Melvin and Morelli designed 8.5M Custom Trimaran, showed brilliantly in the bigger bre...

It's a variation on a proven pedal boat design, modified for stability, storage, and a sail rig in hopes of getting Matt to Ketchikan as fast as possible whether there's wind or not.

    Where's the clip of this boat shunting? Take a look at the comments, nobody can figure out if this boat is a good idea or not, looks freakishly overpowered for a cruising boat but may be an extraordinary racing machine given the right captain, crew and locale, I don't know the Inside Passage, firsthand, or shunting rigs, myself, but I'd love to see this boat shunt.

    • @chrislatchem1854

      Doesn't shunt, it tacks

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker 2 месяца назад

      @@chrislatchem1854 nope it definitely shunts. As someone who has designed and built a couple of Proas I would agree she is freakishly overpowered. No multi-hull should be flying a hull with 3 people on the rail in that wind speed. Fine of course if that's all you want to sail in but even fully reefed she would be a handful in any real breeze.

That can't be practical,all those batteries and electrickery,a nice little diesel engine would chug all day long,an be happy to do so.Electric cars too,you run out of sparks,you gotta re-cook the battery,how long does that take, providing you can find somewhere to plug it in ? We're all bein spoon fed electric this that an the other, crazy.

      Given that this video is dated, most is still relevant. Rechargeable batteries, via solar panels and wind turbine. Run out of diesel away from shore you're hooped. Check out Sailing Uma or Rig Doctor. Each system has pros and cons. There are more parts on an internal combustion engine alone than the complete electric system. More parts means more maintenance and more break downs.

    Awesome set up for a sailing vessel. Wonder how long it will be before an affordable trawler with an electric motor can cross the Atlantic. Looking to buy a boat in the next year, but I have a feeling it's only about 5 years away that electric boats will outperform diesel. Electric cars are already outperforming gas cars.

    In part one you said the motor produces about the same horsepower as the diesel did so why didn't you add a larger motor (10%, 20%, 50+%) to reduce the strain (if any) or was it cost? ;-) I'm guessing, unless there's a significant tide, while at anchor you'll get little to no recharge? That's a motor sailor so the use of the motor will only be needed (hopefully) in the harbor, while a power boat will be running most of the time (unless anchored/docked)? I'm guessing a power boat will require additional systems (generator, wind generator and/ or solar) to maintain a useful battery(s) charge?
