Ocona-where? Oconaluftee River aka the Luftee'.
This river should be on the Trout Unlimited Top 100 Streams to fish in the USA. It was a good one for me though I'll admit I'd never heard of it until I read through Jim Casada's book on the Great Smokey Mountain National Park (GSMNP) Trout fishing.
I made it to the river just before sunset with just enough daylight to scout out some spots for the night and for the next day since the river has quite a few miles of good fishing and I was limited on time.
At the first stop for the night fishing, I landed a very big Brown Trout (for the Oconaluftee River) on a mice pattern - on the 3rd cast! She was a beauty. I tried a few more spots that night...

Being from Texas, we don't think of the Rio Grande as a trout stream, unless one thinks of the Spotted Seatrout near where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. I have fished from that rock more than a few times. The highway noise ruins the experience. As for the Pike minnows: what a disaster to have them in the river system thanks for getting rid of one. They pay big money for you to catch them in the Columbia River system. Some people make more than $50,000 a year doing that.
I believe Pike Minnow is native to that water.

What baits are you using?
Spoons and Paddle Tails. This outing I used white, silver and chartreuse spoons. Try different ones and troll along drop offs zig zagging . Paddle Tails are usually Z-Man 5” or 4” Paddlerz with Texas Eye (3/8 or 1/4). Favorite is Elec Chick or Smokey Shad but sometimes other colors work. Good luck. Lots of fish in all branches.

I have never fished the West Walker before, what campground was this. I have some bad knees but it doesn't stop me but I do need to pick my battles when it comes to water flow.
I can’t remember but you can probably find the answer on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. I think there are a few roadside stops along the river to try out. Good luck!
