And if you want to get your garden bed soil healthy fast then bury some garden scrapes under 2 inches of soil. Any garden cuttings you have. Worms will come up and help decompose it quicker as well

If you use fresh garden soil add a bit of vermiculite or perlite in it so the seeds can germinate and pop through the soil. Pop a hole in the bottom of egg cartons as well

So I got a box of 5 dozen eggs and want to start a ton of seeds using all the cartons. However a simple windowsill won’t really work in the case. So it setting these cartons outside viable? I live in southern Texas where I get lots of sun and hot weather. Just wondering the best way to set this up with limited indoor space and ample outdoor space. Also I have good shaded areas as well. Thanks in advance

    • @DevinTheGardener

Put the egg cartons in your shaded area until the seeds germinate and place a plastic container overtop to keep the moisture in until they germinated and then take it off.

I still prefer 1-inch 3-ring binders with 4-pocket card sleeves. I like being able to see front and back of each seed packet. One binder for each type of seed and also labeled and coded by growing season. I have a spread sheet that tells me when to start which seeds indoors or direct plant out, along with any necessary information from the seed packet. Yes, I have many binders, but they all fit on one shelf of my large bookcase. To date I have 468 packets of seeds. That will change in the next few days because Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is about to start a fundraiser. I may be a seedaholic!

If you want to make that setup, Wire Shelving at 18"x48" are better suited. This dimension is the best for seedling in my opinion. You can fit 4x standard 10x20 trays per shelves. So you can get 16x 10x20 trays per shelving. Also, your 48" shop light will be maximized and they will not exceed the shelves. The highest costs of this setup are the lights, you don't want to lose 1 foot of light that exceed the shelves. Personnaly, i don't use pulley, but only a small chain with a small hook to supsend my lights, the pulley take up too much space (It's like 5 inch per pulley so you will lost a shelve in the total high of the shelf. You don't have to lift the light often, pulley are not so usefull in my opinion, and it's better to have one more shelf full of seedling)
