Fish Scales, & Shrimp Tales

Who is "The Dog"?
I'm an ordinary guy living an ordinary life, living with an extraordinary wife who puts up with my shenanigans (Yes I just used the word shenanigans!)
I should probably spend less time here messing around in fish tanks, and avoiding reel life! (see what i did there?!)
Im in this hobby because I enjoy it, not to make money, although I have started shrimp colonies and am looking into
breeding some live bearers. I just enjoy keeping fish, and Im new to shrimp keeping, but Im enjoying it alot.
I want to share my experiences with you, Im not new to the hobby, but Im just re entering it, and if you find yourself in the same position as myself, and want to learn with me and have a little fun along the way join me, we will experience this together.
I'll screw up allot, I'll make rookie mistakes, and your welcome to point them out and poke fun at me its all in good fun, and the experience of growing in the hobby.

I really did try to keep this short, and learn a few more basic video editing tools to make the video more enjoyable. I'll go over my build from teardown to tank fill and let you know what Im doing and Why along the way.
Why rebuild the Sunkist Shrimp Tank?!

Short video to go over the failed Sunkist Cherry shrimp breeding tank, my thoughts on whats happened and why were restarting this tank. Rebuild video out Friday!
Fish Coloration Store vs. Home
Просмотров 21214 дней назад
A very short video to go over the difference in coloration of a fish you see at the store, and the difference in coloration that fish will exhibit after some time in your aquarium. * Side note, as a Canadian I cant tell you how much it bothers me to spell color without the U for the rest of you! Colour, eh!
Red Cherry Rebuild

This video is the rebuild of the future home of my RCS. I'll go over my tank setup, substrate and thoughts on why Im redoing the tank even though its been somewhat successful.
Why am I tearing down my Red Cherry Shrimp Tank?!
Просмотров 8421 день назад
In this video I discuss the decision to tear down the RCS tank, due to ongoing issues with fluval stratum and what I feel are low survival rates for shrimplets. Rebuild video out Friday!

Pest Snails
Просмотров 229Месяц назад
A quick video to discuss the pros and cons of the so called "pest snail" ( bladder snails, ramshorn, pond, MT's) I'll layout why I hate them, and why they are in every tank I own! *I do apologize for the difference in audio volume between the two clips still no pro at editing but I hope you can see Im making an effort to get better at it.
Live Bearers New Tank update and release.

Short video with small update on livebearer tank including the release of the new fish. Since the recording of this video I now know what fish was accidentally sent to me, and I'll discuss that and what it may mean in a future update video. (Provided my ADHD mind remembers) Also want to mention, I am starting to figure out the editor, it isn't apparent in this video, or a couple others that wer...

Sunkist Neocaradina Shrimp Tank Talk #1
Просмотров 192 месяца назад
An overview of my sunkist orange cherry shrimp tank including the equipment, plants, and fish used along with reasons why behind them. I'll outline the issues I've encountered along with solutions if I've found them. This is video one of the series, I will continue to update you as the tanks progress so you can join me in my journey to becoming a successful shrimp keeper and breeder.
Health permitting, this spring I hope to build a tank based on a Sonoran Desert creek/small river ecosystem. Sunkist shrimp are on my critter list, along with CBDs and a Rasbora species to be determined. It will be my first tank in decades and my first planted tank. Very nice, beautiful build.
Appreciate it. When you get it done I'd love to see a pic! As to the Sunkist shrimp, at this time, if you've not bred shrimp before I'd go with something else, snowballs maybe. These Sunkist shrimp are.......a pain in the arse!
@ Thank you the advice and the laugh. No I don’t need pain I in the ass shrimp!
Great start. I need to try a dirted tank. Thinking of using a claybased pondsoil under sand. What do you think?
I think you could use some clay, but I wouldn't suggest using very much, and if you were going to use a clay as a bonding agent, use red clay!
Love how you use plants😂 Great tips if you want alternatives to expensive materials.
Thanx, I appreciate it, just like to show you don't need deep pockets to have some success.
WARNING! Not all rocks are inert and can leech unwanted crap into your tank.
True, but even many aquarium rocks like seiryu stone aren't inert, you should always check with any hard scape you buy.
I also use the Black Diamond Blasting Sand! 😜Thought I was the only one lol. So cool to see it here. I'm excited to see updates so "Roll that beautiful bean footage".💕
Thanx much! Update footage is in the works!

I’m restarting my 20gal shrimp tank because I have MILLIONS of scuds. The babies just disappear. It’s really sad.
Sorry to hear that, I've never had the misfortune of having to deal with a scud infestation, I hope I never do! Good luck to you, if you find a workable solution I'd love to hear about it!
@ They were bad, like every inch of the tank was covered in them, and they desecrated my mosses and a rare plant, and also chewed holes in the anubias, I also caught them sucking on one of my fishes skin, and eating a few weak/lethargic shrimp, so I think these may be the carnivorous kind. I boiled the substrate, and rinsed my plants well in tap water. I’m sure I haven’t irradiated them but I don’t have hundreds/thousands now. I had more cherries than I thought but all the babies I saw even just a few days ago were gone. I have been slowly losing shrimp for a long time and I think that may have been one of the reasons.
this is a cool video 😁
Thanks, hope it helped, I mucked it up pretty badly in editing, mistakes were made that I won't make again but I think the message of the video was still clear!
@@FishScalesAndShrimpTales totally clear ^^. I never thought that differences in the color of the fish could be this much depending on the stress level. Today i learned somehing new :D its very fascinating
Wow those pebbles look so natural... (Not 😂)
Yup they weren't perfect, but over time with some algae covering them they don't look awful. As the ground cover grows in won't even see them!
Pity about the awful music. Only fools try to speak over music.
Fishy fishy fish

Can't wait to see this tank mature. Thanks for sharing!
It's coming along nicely, I'll post an update soon!
Looks really good. Once it get going its going to be beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Rebuild turned out really nice, there's an update in a couple weeks, tanks really matured. Thanks for watching!
👍
Ty fur turning in.
Have fun with the new aquascape!
Thanx, tank turned out very nice!
Thanks
Your welcome, hope everyone enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reassurance, really. 🙏 Trust the process.😊
I haven't had one fail me yet!
@@FishScalesAndShrimpTales your suggestion to pay attention to the bubbles made sense, as I’ve noticed instances of both.
people love the fishy videos

Dude did you grab those plants from outside? Your tanks are absolutely sick. I’ve been trying to figure out the fish hobby for 3 years now. Very slow learning experience for me, but I’m taking it more serious than ever on my next 10 gallon.
Ty, I appreciate that. Most of the plants were just cuttings I took from other aquariums around the house. To be completely transparent, if the tanks look good, its firstly accidental, and secondly, mostly due to the substrate, dirted tanks completely change the game.
Yes but if you put filter floss in to your filter it will clear it quickly& you will still have the good bacteria
Filter floss will only clear the particles, it won't do anything to clear a bacteria bloom I'm afraid.
Thank you. I was guilty in the beginning of freaking out and trying to solve every visual nuisance. Trust the process.
Glad it helped!
Great information for beginners. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Do snails have brains
Nope, you could technically say they think with their stomach and be right! Seriously!
I wouldn't have a problem with them but they keep eating my plats
Most snails only eat algae, dieing and dead leaves .
My experience has been if snails are eating a plant, it's likely the plant was damaged or sick and that is the part of the plant they are eating.
I make complete ecosystems and couldn’t agree more.
Thanks, I'll drop your channel later!
@@FishScalesAndShrimpTales thank you!!
Great Vid and Valid Points!
Thanx, appreciate it

Everywhere!
Thanks for sharing and your contents are really usefull.I have converted my 29 gallon tank to dieted tank(soil capped with sand). Is it possible to lay any carpet plants in the sand?
Absolutely, I've used lileaopsis Brazil (.no way that's spelled right) hair grass Monte Carlo and dwarf sag, all with success in different tanks.
@@FishScalesAndShrimpTales Thanks. I will try..😊
You are my kind of fish keeper! 🤣I'm researching planted low maintenance shrimp and betta nano tanks. Hence landing on your channel. Kudos to having the balls to put yourself out there in YT land. I need to just upload a video and get it over with buuut I'll just talk myself right out of it again lol. I'm curious to see where your journey takes us! From one ADHD, never finish anything but start everything, individual to another. Ciao for now and stay awesome!🦐
I'm glad you landed here, and I hope I've helped more then I've confused! If you got questions I'll try to find ya and answer!
Stay away from lobsters, they might want to take a walk at night to the kitchen to give you a heart attack in the morning 😂
Only lobster in my kitchen better be smothered in butter!
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Thank you 🙏 I was looking into buying a bigger tank since I bought a little labeo bicolour. I really struggled with my previous one. Which was my first one (25L). Especially with plants. Will try to follow your advice for the next set up
I find it to be a pretty common occurence, people feel like if they are just starting in this hobby they should start small, just like you would in most other hobbies. What pet shops wont tell you is that by buying a smaller "beginner" setup they almost guarantee you will be back to buy additives and medicine for that tank when your fish get sick. Bigger is easier in this hobby, just more expensive! I hope you find some success! Let me know how it works out for you.
Great idea
Thank you! 😊

Are
I can’t sing the praises of floating plants enough. We ended up impulse buying our last tank and I wanted to research plants more before making that jump, but I did buy some giant duckweed. That tank, with just hardscape and floater, started and cycled flawlessly and I was able to plant it up nicely a few weeks later. It’s still super stable and the only real maintenance is water top ups and removing excess floaters every so often.
That's awesome, I'm glad you found a path to success, floaters are like a cheat code for Aquarium's!
Very nice. I'm really liking the setup. Hope it does well for you. Thanks for sharing I also subscribed to your channel. 👍✌️
Thanx. The setup is doing extremely well, I'll be posting regular updates to the setup, its changed alot already!

Thanks for stopping in, this is turning out to be alot of fun, and id like to think im slowly getting better with these videos. Keep the comments and questions coming!
😁 Wow almost 500 views, I dunno what happened but thanks to all of you who tuned in!
it's the click bait.
I love this
Thanks Lucky!!
nice video I'd love to see a follow-up when you get the live bearers in ! Good job !
Coming soon!
I used fluval stratum for a base in 3 different tanks all super healthy and thriving. Keep up the good work, I’m still going through all your videos!
Thanks for the info, I struggled with it, in fact Ive recently made a decision to abandon my two shrimp tanks with stratum in them and redo them from the substrate up due to poor survival rates, but thats another video!
