Fish Coloration Store vs. Home

A very short video to go over the difference in coloration of a fish you see at the store, and the difference in coloration that fish will exhibit after some time in your aquarium. * Side note, as a Canadian I cant tell you how much it bothers me to spell color without the U for the rest of you! Colour, eh!

    Health permitting, this spring I hope to build a tank based on a Sonoran Desert creek/small river ecosystem. Sunkist shrimp are on my critter list, along with CBDs and a Rasbora species to be determined. It will be my first tank in decades and my first planted tank. Very nice, beautiful build.

      Appreciate it. When you get it done I'd love to see a pic! As to the Sunkist shrimp, at this time, if you've not bred shrimp before I'd go with something else, snowballs maybe. These Sunkist shrimp are.......a pain in the arse!

    Great start. I need to try a dirted tank. Thinking of using a claybased pondsoil under sand. What do you think?

    • @FishScalesAndShrimpTales
      @FishScalesAndShrimpTales 4 дня назад

      I think you could use some clay, but I wouldn't suggest using very much, and if you were going to use a clay as a bonding agent, use red clay!

      True, but even many aquarium rocks like seiryu stone aren't inert, you should always check with any hard scape you buy.

      Sorry to hear that, I've never had the misfortune of having to deal with a scud infestation, I hope I never do! Good luck to you, if you find a workable solution I'd love to hear about it!

    • @Puffermom
      @Puffermom 13 дней назад

      @ They were bad, like every inch of the tank was covered in them, and they desecrated my mosses and a rare plant, and also chewed holes in the anubias, I also caught them sucking on one of my fishes skin, and eating a few weak/lethargic shrimp, so I think these may be the carnivorous kind. I boiled the substrate, and rinsed my plants well in tap water. I’m sure I haven’t irradiated them but I don’t have hundreds/thousands now. I had more cherries than I thought but all the babies I saw even just a few days ago were gone. I have been slowly losing shrimp for a long time and I think that may have been one of the reasons.

    • @FishScalesAndShrimpTales
      @FishScalesAndShrimpTales Месяц назад

      Ty, I appreciate that. Most of the plants were just cuttings I took from other aquariums around the house. To be completely transparent, if the tanks look good, its firstly accidental, and secondly, mostly due to the substrate, dirted tanks completely change the game.

      I find it to be a pretty common occurence, people feel like if they are just starting in this hobby they should start small, just like you would in most other hobbies. What pet shops wont tell you is that by buying a smaller "beginner" setup they almost guarantee you will be back to buy additives and medicine for that tank when your fish get sick. Bigger is easier in this hobby, just more expensive! I hope you find some success! Let me know how it works out for you.

    I can’t sing the praises of floating plants enough. We ended up impulse buying our last tank and I wanted to research plants more before making that jump, but I did buy some giant duckweed. That tank, with just hardscape and floater, started and cycled flawlessly and I was able to plant it up nicely a few weeks later. It’s still super stable and the only real maintenance is water top ups and removing excess floaters every so often.
