Lion hunting in the desert of southern New Mexico with my hounds and mule. Today we went to go check a camera I’ve had set up for about 7 months and have had a ton of lion activity. Today we showed up and we’re 3.5-4hrs behind a real nice Tom lion. The only problem is the dogs just couldn’t open up and trail this lion. Sometimes the weirdest things just happen.

Lion hunting in the desert of southern New Mexico under some tough conditions from drought to rising summer temps. Hunting with hounds off the back of mule in the desert is an tough way of trying to catch a lion but an awesome experience.

Mules,beats walking
Sounds like a challenge in the dry condition
Yes it is that’s for sure!
Been there sir treed coon in Mexico and Texas it is rough country I agree every one has there own type of hounds that start bogging down on tracks like I see isn't good especially if you think they are running cold tracks all time as shock them to each it's own
No offense you need to gi f a better track dog
Haha well that’s your opinion but appreciated. Come hunt down here and then make comment
You have a good pack of hounds, coon and lion dogs, real dog man
How bout more hunting and less talking would rather hear the hounds than listen to someone talk just saying
Good looking hounds
How old was your pup during the making of this video?
Sorry, im done. You guys are a waste of time.
Why hunt mountain lions tho
You do know they are in the flatlands on the gorge. Literally in people’s backyards. You guys chose to hunt the high country? It’s all blm, doesn’t matter people made their house their. You can shoot one is someone’s backyard as long as your still on blm. Just not into private property.
Nice dog work
Assholes!!!!
What constriction is the carlson choke tube you shooting
Have you ever hunted with Finley river kennels
Question, don’t they use their tails for balance? Seems like you would want them to have every advantage on the trail. Could be a dominance/control issue also. Just curious not pickin a fight bro. Love the content
Has nothing to do with dominance control
The hunters I see now are lazy as hell using gps to track dogs are missing out of a lot of good long races get rid of the gpses and pay more attention to your hounds a good hunter is not looking at his gps or phone if you know how to hunt and the area and know your dog you don't need that shit
I lost a super star bear dog half bluff creek plott half jadg to a mean walking bear on too hot of a day. Took him three days to die quit eating and drinking . He was a miracle dog I feel depressed still.
Moving to nm this year. Nice video.
So funny! Thank God for cameras? Keep riding boys!
A Coon Hunter two very good I walked a many 0:06 a mile coon huntin Howdy from Tennessee
Subscribed and like if you're a buddy of Brett's you have to be a good dude onward and upward
Aren't you Robert Brett's friend?
Awesome you can tell a lot of work was put in ..
One day I will get a lion
Definitely need to go do it!
I’ve got a trip booked with Mike in January 2024
Right on you should have a good time. Mike is the best in the business
🐕👏👍👌🥰😍🤩
Thank you
We didn’t do to bad this year, I didn’t get to much video though!
Yeah we did pretty good for jumping in half way through the season and I have some content I need to put out. Duck hunts are hard to film!
Turned his scent off!
Turned his scent off!
Probably could be the case or just the conditions we have down here who knows
@@ontheridgeadventures4650 I like listening to all the theories about lions being able to shut their scent down, especially by the old timers!
@@AnecdoteofaHoundsman oh yeah it’s cool to hear all the ideas of what lions do especially with scent
How much of the rio is legal to hunt? Id like to do more coon hunting but just not alot around my neck. I have treed some in canyons i had no clue even had coon but few and far. I fish the rio but not sure where all I can turn dogs out without issues.
Well what part of the river are you curious about?
@@ontheridgeadventures4650 the closest section to me would be south of Abq i know there are wild life refuges down that way but ive never done anything on the rio except fish. Also dont want to piss off land owners either.
@@Starlinsoriginalmountaincurs everything in your area should be open. You would need to contact the conservancy up there.
@@ontheridgeadventures4650 ill get to it there a hunt this month up there i hope to make it to. The game wardens should have a booth i think. Hope to find some guys that can show me around so to speak. Also i know the further south you go the more pecans that are grown. Do farmers have issues with squirrels?
@@Starlinsoriginalmountaincurs yeah they game and fish would be a good idea or the local houndsmen up there.
Great till they kill the last one 😏 fucken idiots
Hope you will be the next one. After riaan naude.
I’m new subscriber. I’ll be enjoying more of your videos and just back tracking them now.
Sounds good I appreciate it. I haven’t been putting out much right now just because had a lot going on but I’ll be starting to put more content now in the coming months
Hey I'm not sure if you're checking these comments still but I'm hunting gila next week. Coming from Georgia/west virginia, so it's going to be very different. I don't have Instagram. Is there any other way I can contact you with a couple questions?
Just on here or Instagram.
Do you find there are more turkeys in certain portions of the forest? Like up north or east for example? I scouted the south pretty hard and didn't see any sign. Also what's your experience with the walk-in areas like the catwalk trails going back toward turkey creek?
Finally, do I pretty much need to stick to the terrain around rivers which actively contain water?
@@watterloggedboots honestly the gila is a big area and I’ve found them all over it from the north to the south. Closer to water would probably be a good bet.
Never just trust the tracking system...
Hay man what you give your dog's to build stamina and fitness to run hole day?
I feed a grain free dog food that is 25% fat 25% protein and keep them exercised.
I noticed a lot of your dogs tails are cut shorter. Is there a specific reason for this?
They are docked so when they are trailing in thick brush and whipping their tails they don’t bust their tail open.
Hell yea 👍great video good looking hounds
Thanks I appreciate it
Hell yea 👍
Thank you
Should of took the pointer along too u would be suprized
He never liked it! I tried getting him to take and he just ran around confused lol
Hey brothers, awesome, enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing, keep looking up!
Hey thank I appreciate the support for sure.
You guys had a good race and got a dandy lion. Looks like the plan worked out great. Ole Sid wanted to claim that lion. Had a female who did that on every bear she was in on. Thanks and good hunting and gods speed to ya and yours. 👍🏆🎥🥇
Thanks Joel I appreciate it. Yeah he did want to claim it but he wasn’t growly about it.
Did y’all get the dead head
What dead head? I don’t remember one lol
Almost looked too easy lol. Great dogs, rewarded with a little chew for their commitment to the trail👍🏻
It actually was a pretty easy hunt that day for sure.
FUCKING TERRIBLE SLAYING OF A CAT
Bad ass video, some good looking country
Thanks I appreciate it
Why didn’t he pull the mules tail out
I do sometimes or just let them flick it out on their own.
@@ontheridgeadventures4650 fair enough mate, love your videos
@@trumbydownunder750 thank I appreciate the support
Think we might have one of your dogs Brothers he came out of Blanco as well beautiful black and tan loudest dog in the whole neighborhood we love it
Yeah it probably came from mr Blackburn if it’s out of Blanco texas
Lion hunting + big horn sheep hunting, what’s next 😮, awesome video brother 👍
Right now back to lion hunting! Maybe some Barbary sheep hunting if I have time
Treeing coons out west is certainly tough to impossible in super dry months.
Yeah takes a cold nose on a dog for sure. But I don’t mind it. Helps the young dogs learn to cold trail
@@ontheridgeadventures4650 for sure
