Biker and cyclist in the west of Scotland. Riding a '99 FireBlade when I want the engine, and a Ribble CGR AL when I don't.
Platform 22
A nice ride from Monymusk to Torphins, for a coffee stop at Platform 22. Nothing too long or too strenuous, just some nice countryside. On the way I came across a 1910 Stanley Steam Car, (which was going to Castle Fraser for a steam fair).

Tour of Angus - Ride the North 2024

Ride the North was in Angus this year, starting and ending in Arbroath. As always it was a very well planned and organised event, with the focus very much on enjoying the ride (challenging as it was) through beautiful countryside with plentiful stops. Good food available everywhere, (and a special shout out to the shortcrust bridies from McLaren Bakery in Forfar!). Alex patiently kept me compan...
Normandy 2024 Bike Tour - Day 5

A little motorcycle tour of Normandy over a long weekend. Some sight seeing, some history absorbed, some good food and some great riding with good friends. Sadly the fifth day is the journey home. The rest of the group wanted the "easy" ride of main roads and motorways. Not so easy on a FireBlade, so Alexander and I stuck to the country roads and managed to meet up with the rest of the group ba...

A little motorcycle tour of Normandy over a long weekend. Some sight seeing, some history absorbed, some good food and some great riding with good friends. This is day 4, a loop through some lovely roads down to Fougères, where we had a lovely lunch. We looped back up to Arromanches on a more easterly road, still enjoying the twists, in time for our final evening meal in Arromanches at Le Mulbe...

A little motorcycle tour of Normandy over a long weekend. Some sight seeing, some history absorbed, some good food and some great riding with good friends. Cycling from Fidden Farm Campsite, by Fionphort, to Tobermory, in May. A chilly start but it brightened up as the day went on - although the wind never dropped! Slightly hampered by shearing a chunk out of the big ring on my crank, but on Mull I didn't need that too much anyway. Filmed with an Insta360 X3, ridden on my Ribble CGR AL 105. The 85 mile route of the Etape Caledonia, in May 2024. Beautiful scenery all of the way around the route, with some climbing and some lochside flats. Cold Crow - a cold ride over Crow Road

Started out at -7°C, and warmed up to barely freezing as the day went on. Starting from the not-so-picturesque Port Dundas, up to Lennoxtown, over Crow Road to Fintry, Killearn and back to Glasgow via Mugdock Reservoir, Bearsden and Kelvinside. The fourth day of the Caledonia 2023 bash, and the last of the video (as my camera gave up its fight against the wet conditions, before the end of the day). Nice vid. The boy at 4:29 looks like he was burning his matches too early 🙋 😂😂
@@gregbrown1860 I think that was steeper downhill than it looked.
Hi great footage, what is the mount you’ve used and what settings please? Just picked up an x4 and looking at mounting options 👍
@@andynicol9831 I used to use the Insta out front mount. It's really good to use, but it's not strong enough for British roads (and nowhere near strong enough for gravel!). I had two of the carbon poles, before giving up, and then the base mount itself also failed. It can't cope with the vibration, long term. So I got a mate to machine a pole out of alukinium, which takes the ¼ inch camera mount threads, and use a standard clamp and ball mount. (Only problem with that is it tends to spin on the bars).
@ cheers it was the insta mount I was looking at looked ideal with the Garmin mount incorporated, back to the drawing board….what settings did you record at do you remember? I’ve read that 5k and 60fps is the optimum for cycling..?
@@andynicol9831 the mount is great, for as long as it lasts, but that's the issue. I have the X3, so 5k isn't available to me. The better the quality you record at, the more quality you'll keep as you reframe it. (And upload to RUclips at 2k minimum - that forces them to use the better compression codec). 60fps isn't generally necessary, I wouldn't have thought, unless you want slowmo.
Hello mate I watched you dothe loch ness ride which I did this year,so how long did this ride take ?
Hi @paulthomas8296 . I did it in 5h22, plus 14 minutes of stops (had a bit of a mechanical, and a bacon roll 😜).
Having watch videos of the etape loch ness this looks the more beautiful and less busy ride.
@@danielfisher6501 that's probably accurate, yes.
Blimey 😮 100 miles, id have taken the blade if i were you 😂 thanks for sharing scotland with us 🙂 beautiful scenery as always. Congratulations on completing the ride
Cheers Muttley. 🍻
Thank you so much for this ! Me and a pal are doing this in September and I’m wanting to visit the Caen memorial to find my grandad’s brothers name who was killed there
@@DucatiDave68 good luck. It's a beautiful area. If you're riding, an app like Calimoto (set to "winding") is quite handy. There are a lot of straight roads joining up towns, which can get monotonous if you don't find the more twisting ones.
Great tip thank you !
Nice video...and that new British memorial is absolutely stunning
@@karstenlund-tiger900bonded2 thank you. The memorial was a very effective reminder, with so many names on every pillar.
If you're still there, enjoy. If you're already back, I hope you had a great time 😊
@@Muttley600 we did mate. No way I cold do this editing while I'm away!
@Tazfiend yeah, the editing does take a bit, doesn't it. It's great to see you all out enjoying yourselves, though 😀
@@Muttley600 yeah, it's a time-sink!
What camera did you use, insta 360? Great footage 😎
Thank you. Yes, it was the Insta360 X3. 👍🏻
Well played mate. Some nice camera work.

what was your average speed ?
15.1mph. Hardly astounding pace, but I was happy enough.
I am doing this for the first time next month! Did 35 miles on the bike today. I've never done 66 miles before! I'm nervous but looking forward to it!
The vast majority of the ride is easy going, you'll do fine. Just save a little energy during the first half, so you're not too tired for the hill out of Fort Augustus.
@@Tazfiend okay, thank you! 😊
Looks like an absolutely smashing ride 👌
It was a nice run, yes. 👍🏻🙂
74 miles & you think you're struggling with stamina 😂 taz. You do make me laugh 😂 brilliant video as always, cheers me up seeing Scotland
Trust me, by the end of that I was struggling! 😅

Looks like a great ride, Sam. Much better scenery than the rides I take in Raleigh!😄
Cheers Andrew. The west coast is rather blessed for scenery. So is the rest of Scotland, come to that.
That descent at 16.00 down Culvie hill was pretty spectacular after passing the motorbike . I know that hill and bends at bottom, awesome.
I sometimes forget I'm not wearing leathers...

That did look a tad nippy!
It was a bit fresh, especially starting out. 🥶🤣
@@Tazfiend it wasn’t till watching the video I realised you’d gone the pipe line rather than Carron Valley.
@@SwampyDuckRidesAgain3636 it was all new to me. I was just looking for a way to kill some time while my car was in the garage. 😋 I'll try the other way next time, if I can find it.
Roadwise I like doing Crow, Carron Valley and down the Tak but there’s some great gravel in the Carron valley and reservoir and easy to nip over to Stirling.
Impressive camera work.
Impressive camera, certainly. Thank you. 👍🏻 I hope the rest of your ride went well.
I’ve signed up for my first Etape and drove the king of the mountain on my way back from Mallaig last week, safe to say I’m a little nervous…
It's a tough climb, but it's not quite as bad as it looks. Just don't go out too strong at the start, pace yourself.
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated! I think I’ll give it a blast in March and April to see what I’m in for 😉
Great Video ! Can I ask what the camera setup you have ? I'm doing ELN 24' and would like to document it
Thank you. 🍻 I use the Insta360 X3 on their "Third Person/Invisible Bicycle Handlebar Mount" (snappy name isn't it?). The one thing I'd warn you about it is that the carbon fibre pole can fail on rough British roads. They warn you it's not for off-road use - but it's not up to consistently rough and potholed roads either. I have ended up having an aluminium pole machined to replace it.

Yes I made a route similar to this as I would like to do a loop of Loch Ness next year , showing a fairly hilly ride but the roads & views look excellent. I did something like this one time around Windermere lake all beit a shorter ride but it was very good .
The roads and the views are good, although I wouldn't ride the mainnroad from Inverness to Fort Augustus when it's open to traffic.
@@Tazfiend oh ok thanks for the advise
@@252Scooby that was one of the main reasons I did the etape; the chance to cycle that road without fear of death by tourist coach or caravan.
Great video. Looks like you did better on the climbs than I did 😂
It's a tough climb, but I live on the west of Scotland, so I get practice on hills!
At least you got your moneys worth out of your waterproofs 😂 Murrays new place looks remote, very nice 👍 my video was full of electrical interference. Think I've solved it now
@Muttley600 My waterproofs are older than my daughter, they've definitely paid for themselves over the years! Murray is closer to civilisation than he used to be, but in a beautiful location. Was your video bike powered? That can be a problem.
@Tazfiend yes, I concur, you've definitely had your moneys worth out of your waterproofs 😂 Yes, my camera is bike powered. I've moved the power lead & it seems to be OK now while testing it, shame really as I lost some great footage, but on the bright side, it means I get to go out to try again 😂 it'll never match up to your footage with your new camera though, that's just ace how it turns around 👍 I'm well impressed with your videos 😀
@@Muttley600 the 360° recording does give you a lot of flexibility. And it means you don't have to worry about missing something by having the camera mounted pointing the wrong way, as it points all ways at once.
It's great to see you all enjoying Scottieland it's nice to see Murray was out as well. The rain made me laugh. It's like Wales 😂 I wanna get back up there someday 😊
I couldn't even film the heaviest rain. It was biblical. 🌧️
@Tazfiend I can imagine 😂 we get a lot in Wales, so much that I tend to wear a textile jacket these days 😂 you'll have to let me know when your doing it next year & I'll join you or maybe get a group of us together for a holiday like Kev did at Inchree chalets
I think they're planning to go further afield next year. I haven't yet decided if I can stretch to that.
@Tazfiend oh, nevermind, that's just my luck 😂
@@Muttley600 I'm sure it will be back in Scotland, or the borders, the year after.

Good video, well done. For me the dreich conditions would have been easier to bear if I hadn't been suffering bad cable drag. Got home and investigated and found that in fitting a new RD cable I'd got it twisted around the brake pipe inside the downtube! That's a mistake I won't make again.
Oops. I had much more minor indexing issues myself, but that sounds a pain.
@@Tazfiend Out of interest, how the heck do you shoot the video from just in front of the bike with the camera rotating every minute? I'd like to do the same on my cycling and kayaking trips.
@@bendenisereedy7865 it's a 360 camera. So it films all around all the time, I decide where to point the shot afterwards, on the PC (or phone). Looking good, Sam! How are you finding the 360 cam?
The camera is excellent. Very easy to use because you don't have to worry about where it's pointing, choosing your view later. The out front mount on the bike has failed though (not the whole mount, just the long carbon fibre rod). Not sure if it's a one off, or if it's not up to the vibration caused by British roads.

Don't really fancy doing Knockhill in the wet. Just don't see the fun in a track day when pissing down with rain. I just hope I don't book one up and get caught out. It didn't look like you did much wrong to be honest, I wonder if you took that left-right a bit faster the gyroscopic affect would have helped keep you upright?
