This was very helpful. Ny daughter recently had a shoulder blade area injury in her glove side that we could not figure out. She has been forcing her shoulders toward the batter. This makes so much sense.

I'm a Seaver guy and love the drop and drive approach. All the Mets pitchers from the era did it and they lasted a long time without injury. Seaver, Ryan, Koosman, etc.

Are you trying to achieve a bullet spin or a sideways spin?
Bullet spins do not move. Bullet spins create equal air pressure on both sides of the ball. Bullets are rifled to prevent movement. It's physics.

I wouldn't agree. Many MLB pitchers come back to the tall point after they've come down from their leg kick. Clayton Kershaw is probably the most notable.

Those pitches have no movement . The ball is thrown directly to the right side of the plate. It is a inside fastball thrown from the left side of the pitching plate.
They do. Good screwballs have lots of movement and curve inside.
I've thrown one before by accident.
I use to do tall and fall but my stride was shorter and slower and my velocity was slower. So I switched to drop and drive or slide. More speed down the mound. Velocity up. But there's a huge difference in leg use. Drop drive is basically one leg squat. It's hard but you have to really train and strengthen your back leg. So there's no doubt that pitchers who throw hardest are the drop and drive. Of course pitchers like Randy Johnson uses his torque and whip of his arm made alot of difference in his speed. Nolan Ryan relied on his legs and he let it whipped his arm through. But either way you can become a good pitcher.
i had some arm issues and used tall and fall and it worked ...was surprised actually...

Thanks, Chaz. I've incorporated this into my practices and seen significant flow and improvement. Yes, you need to spend time coaching the parents in what fundamentals to teach, but with that done, it's a good formula.
Perhaps if this video were cut down to 10 to 12 minutes, views wouldn't not get into the fetal position. Instead of bashing other coaches and telling everyone how great a coach you are, just show your practice.

I like the Haney swing more. The take away, the way the club is laid off on the way down and the way the club exists more horizontally on the last part of tigers swings is better in my opinion.

Does the knee drive the hip or does the hip straighten out the knee? Or....do the work in tandem?

Attaching significance to front foot strike shows a lack of understanding of how the human body syncs itself up to throw a football or baseball. There is nothing important about front foot strike when you throw; other than to prevent you from falling on your face. Teaching kids that something important happens with the throwing arm at front foot strike will mess up their natural sync. I know everybody teaches it that way, but it's wrong. The critical action that needs to be taught actually occurs right before front foot strike.
+aimhigh1961 Your point is taken, but I'd argue that there are important elements at each keyframe. I'd agree that you don't stress that to the kids as primary coaching; it's just an analysis observation here and more an indicator of what came before. Still, knowing the significance of heel strike strides in baseball pitching, I can't agree that it's "nothing important". Thanks for the comment.
+PowerChalk IMO there is no significance with heel strike in baseball pitching as it relates to ground reaction force or something related to the throwing arm. Heel strike is a meaningless check point that is commonly used in video analysis. I don't agree that foot strike starts the ground force energy from the back foot as you state in your video. Anatomically, your hip sockets and shoulder sockets are ball and socket type joints that have the ability to internally and externally rotate. The external rotation of the front thigh...PRIOR TO FOOT STRIKE...is what triggers...or what...SHOULD TRIGGER...the external rotation of the throwing arm and the opening of the hips...which is the point where the ground reaction force at the back foot increases just prior to weight shift. I see instructors attaching significance to front foot strike when teaching kids to throw and it's messing up their natural sync. I should also add that the roll over of the front thigh prior to foot strike is a no teach. The...RELATIONSHIP...between the front thigh roll over and throwing arm is what needs to be taught, which is further tied to how the hands break...or should break with internal rotation...palms down. For more info on ground reaction force at the back foot you can google "Secret in the Dirt" by Mike Maves. It's a golf video, but the principle of how the body pushes against the earth to generate force applies to throwing. The bottom line is the roll over of the front thigh is what takes the cork off the bottle. It's what allows the energy...pressure...stored up at the back foot to be released. By the time the front foot strikes, pressure at the back foot is already being released...leaking. Teaching that front foot strike starts ground reaction force at the back foot is essentially teaching kids to...leak some energy...THEN...throw. Rather than just explode at front thigh roll over.

Don't know if I'm a fun person or not, but I do know that kids I work with have a lot of fun learning about the basic scientific principles behind why it's important for them to use their bodies a certain way. Kids have way more interest in what's being taught, and learn much quicker when they understand the "Why" and not just the "How". Understanding the 'Why", also protects them against other instructors and coaches teaching them incorrect movements because they are better equipped to think for themselves. The reality is that much of the stuff kids are taught today when it comes to throwing a baseball, throwing a football; or hitting a baseball, doesn't follow proven science.

Great video! One thing I ran into with my 7 and 8 year Olds was the length of time it took to explain what to do at each station as well as explaining to parents or assistant coaches what the correct way of doing it looked like. It took up a good 20 minutes of a 90 minute practice.

+Roger Robinson .....I will try to anwer as a hitting coach and former player. Everything that you are seeing from chaz is absolutely on the money. The 3 steps to getting through an offspeed pitch are: 1. Same stride: Recognize that you are fooled on the speed. Still have the same stride and forward momemtum falling and ready to turn, but once you are fooled on the speed and know it, keep your hands back and maintain the seperation for as long as you need. 2. Be a good fastball hitter. If you find yourself in breaking ball counts....zone up. If that pitch starts down or off the plate, it will end up even more down and away. Maybe it's a take. ALWAYS maintain a Yes...Yes...Yes...(NO) mentality on pitches you take. 3. If the pitch is going to cross the plate in your drive zone and you are protecting in a pitchers count, try to hit the inside portion of the ball with the barell. (you will not roll over and will drive the ball with authority.) Hope I helped.
+Jay Toomuchhustle Good advice. Tony Gwynn advocated always hitting the inside of the ball. Eight batting titles can't be wrong.
+PowerChalk I didn't invent these ideas myself. My player agent coming up was Steve Springer, who was a huge Tony Gwynn guy. He is the perfomance/hitting coach for the Blue Jays now, and it's obvious what's going on with the hitters in Toronto. I am only regurgitating stuff that was taught to me.
+Jay Toomuchhustle Nice comments I'm glad to hear your experience - I would add there is a technical advantage you are not addressing - Use a lower body pause technique. 1) Land on a flexed front knee - and practice Zero 1,2, drills - never stopping momentum - turn when the balls crosses the area of inpact - triggered by a forceful straightening of the fron side - I've used this with great results but it needs to be practiced on the Tee, then front toss, then PB - then dominate. see AJ's landing at the 19 min mark and watch the 'take' carefully.
I need my 8yo 63lb Aiden to swing like that! I am thoroughly confused. He was taught linear swing, hands on plain quickly. Short to the ball, long through the ball. Don't drop the barrel. I see there are linear and rotational concepts here. I will see if I can use this video to adjust my son's swing. Thanks for the great video.
+delcy28 If you scrub tape from MLB games, you'll see that virtually all hitters have a linear component their swing. The linear movement stops and becomes completely rotational when the stride foot heel goes down (at weight shift). Think about throwing a punch - or a baseball. The step creates momentum that you can translate into rotational force if you work from the ground up.
