UNLOCKED Baofeng UV-5R Transmits to both GMRS and FRS Service Bands (Very Useful)!
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
Did you know that by "unlocking" the Baofeng UV-5R it will transmit on the GMRS/FRS service bands as well? This could be a lifesaver in any situation where communication between the Amateur (Ham) band and the GMRS/FRS bans may be needed. *Note: The Baofeng UV-5R is manufactured to transmit on the 2M/70cm Amateur radio bands. Therefore using the Baofeng beyond those parameters is frowned upon. B...

Jumpstart Your Comms: Explorer QRZ-1
Your video ultimately helped me program my radio. Thanks. 73
Glad it could help you out! 73's!
Uv17 pro using chirp will program it that’s what I used on mine great little radios
I have heard that several radios aren't CHIRP programmable. It can be a hit or miss.
You can just choose reset in settings
I think the reset you are speaking of is a rest for your saved memory channels. Not quite the same thing as the "Reset" that allows you to put in GMRS frequencies.
Doesn’t work
It could be a "newer" UV-5R, which I have heard and read they don't need an "unlock".
Have fun with it! I worked France on one with 20Watts!
I am having loads of fun with it!
What is the range capacity for this radio? 50 100 miles?
If you talking radio to radio, I would give it a few miles at best. I have never really seen them communicate over 10 miles line of sight unless under exceptional terrain conditions.
Unfortunately thjs didn’t work on my UV-5R5
Sorry to hear. Was yours already unlocked by chance?
@ I’m not sure. Would this unlock allow me to enter any frequency? I’m unable to enter several that I tried.
Is the UV5R8W any good ?
If that is the "OG" Uv-5R (8 watt) version, it's a starter radio. It's better than nothing, but I believe there are others out there that would be a bit better. Try looking at Radtel or TidRadio.
@NukaVaultReadiness I just got gifted a brand new set of these radios in the box with a bunch of antenna and microphones and cables so are they ok because I am new at this. Thank you for replying.
How do you unlock the UV-5RM I couldn't transmit during the Pacific Palisades fire here in Los Angeles CA!!!
Sorry to hear you are in the area, hope you are safe! What frequency were you trying to use?
UV-5RM is locked and can’t be unlocked. Baofeng does sell an out of the box unlocked version from what I understand called the AR-5RM. Literally the same radio just unlocked from factory and don’t have to do anything as it’s ready to go.
Quite popular with ham/swl ops in the armed forces its compact. And light weight. And can be used on a balcony. My rig cuppled up with gator clips. Listen to the man it works..sgt willams retired...
I’ve heard there are some that you can’t unlock. My two were unlocked when I got them (but that was like 12 years ago). My oldest one is programmed with ham, and all the GMRS and FRS channels.
Great review! I really appreciate the honest evaluation that didn’t shy away from pointing out potential weaknesses despite you receiving the hardware for free from the manufacturer. Let us know if MaxTalker follows up with you on any of the points you raised! It seems like their radios have some nice design features, so it’d be a huge win if they’re also receptive to feedback from the radio community!
Thank you! I have reached out to them with my findings (and this video). Looking forward to hearing from them myself. Maybe there will be a followup video!
I would like to know can I buy this radio to connect to my job walkie-talkie
I highly advise you NOT to use this radio to connect with your job's walkies. May I ask what frequency/band the job is using?
Hello, ran across your video and I have a question? I’m looking for a handheld radio that can reach 75 miles, any suggestions. Thanks
Usually unless you are connected to an external antenna, under most circumstances that degree of reach is not possible. To reach that with a handheld, I would suggest looking at a 10dBi+ gain Yagi antenna. Even then, from your point to reach 75 miles it would have to be over flat terrain without any obstacles.
@ thank you for your time and information.
Didn’t work on mine. One showed “Copying” on the screen. The other turned on like normal.
I have to ask, when you first turn on the radio, does it flash that it's a UV-5R model?
I see “Welcome” I’ve messed with the settings so it’s not brand new. The radio is a UV-5R
So you start with the radio off when you are doing the unlock method. I asked what your screen says because I helped a fellow ham try to program his "UV-5R" according to the sticker on the bottom of the radio, but come to find out when I turned it on, it flashed that it was a BF-F8HP instead! So the mfg put a UV-5R sticker on a BF-F8HP radio, hence it would never "unlock".
@ how do I know if I have the other radio?
With the radio off, turn it on and look at the screen, what does it say when the voice says "Welcome", or rather when the opening beep starts up?
Is there a way to extend the light on the screen time?
-Got to the menu (Green button top L of keypad) -Option #6 ABR (Always Backlight) -Change to your preferred -Confirm via same green button (menu button)
Does anybody know how to use digital scanner to get in on state police and local police traffic
As far as my knowledge goes, you can buy one or use a web service to listen to trunked comm systems like that.
@ thank you for the response so you as a civi can buy digital trucked scanner? I am so sorry I am dumb.. what webservice is there for this also?
Most scanners are available to the public. Now, I am sure there may be some hiccups if you are wanting to say buy a military scrambler or something of that caliber.
C'est la meilleure lampe frontale polyvalente. Le flux lumineux est constant, le flood en 400 lumens est top. La finition est exemplaire.
If you're in a pinch and you know where some lithium ion cells are, you can take apart those and put four in series and you have yourself a makeshift 12 volt battery.
Awesome! I thought about ordering some just to keep a "spare" 12V handy.
It will cause interference as it vibrates ,it's a bit wobbly
Facts. Strong winds cause interruptions and static buildup on the antenna and coax.
@NukaVaultReadiness it moves around ,and it will disrupt
a roll of chicken wire on the underside of the attic would be a good way ,all that metal net spread over a few square feet you should have no problems tuning, i set 1 up for uhf for the freeview TV it gets all the channels
How much do you pay for that walkie-talkie
Was about $25 on Amazon.
FCC has neither the resources nor the inclination to hunt people down for transmitting on a radio which isn't type-accepted for a particular frequency. There's no way for anyone to know what kind of radio you're using unless they can actually see it. People do sometimes find themselves in trouble over doing stupid stuff that disrupts the ability of others to use the airwaves, and if they have to come for you, FCC will probably throw that charge into the mix. If you stick to bands that you are authorized to use (MURS, FRS, GMRS if licensed) and don't exceed the allowable wattage, you can probably do it the rest of your life without any problems. Yes, you would be in violation of FCC rules, and I'm not telling you that you should, but assuming you're an adult, take this information and make your own decisions.
Agree 100%.
I just ordered one on the Tik Tok shop for $10
Woah super cheap! It is a legit radio right?
@ I haven’t received it as of yet BUT I’ll definitely get back to you once I do. I had a coupon that I applied and it brought it down to $10.
Right on, eager to find out!
Do you have a simple solar panel so you could set it outside to recharge?
I have a 100W solar panel that I know will charge it. I also have a smaller 60W foldable panel that I need to test on it.
Things I used for this build: Plano Storage Box: www.homedepot.com/p/Plano-16-qt-Storage-Crate-PLA1071MC/312083542 GOLDENMATE LiPo4 Batteries: a.co/d/aMfGSsO Battery Monitor: a.co/d/fz2MhKL 10AWG Flex Wire: a.co/d/7rUi7P0 9 Port 40A Connector: a.co/d/aHav46G With the batteries in parallel, this theoretically has a capacity of 40Ah.
Can I use 3 of these to communicate with buddies in different vehicles on road trips
You can if you are planning to use them on the Ham frequencies. If not, then I suggest getting an FRS or GMRS radio.
@ I have 2 gmrs radios just new to that style radio so not sure what to do
Try Zello Communication Application Hands free use if you wish with VOX (voice activated transmission) if Internet isn't problem
Yes
@NukaVaultReadiness please can i have help with this issue
This is awesome. I just got two of these with extended battery if that matters. I've been trying to find a video to help me and then I get this on my fyp. How do I program my local police and fire/rescue scanner frequency and have my radio continue to scane through them ? Please can I have some help with this
I think I did something wrong because I found a police frequency and I'm able to press the talk button and possibly talk to them if I wanted to and I don't lol but odd like to be able to listen to them all as of right now I can only hear 1 is that because I have to unlock it ?
So most police and fire departments use encrypted UHF frequencies, that can only be listened to usually via the internet and certain websites (unless you have the means to listen to encrypted via radio). If you are able to hear one then they are still using analog frequencies that you can program in your Baofeng, which it sounds like you did. It should NOT require unlocking to hear analog PD and FD frequencies, but I guess it couldn't hurt. I highly suggest NEVER talking to PD or FD directly on those channels, unless loss of life is at stake.
@NukaVaultReadiness ok and thank you for your response I appreciate that. I do have one last question if it's ok. There is deeper settings in the menu that a video I watched told me to set at something like 000.600 something and a few other things because I couldn't figure out how to set up the scanner to listen to the police fire and rescue. So on one radio I have those settings and the other I don't. Is there a video or a way I can get told how to operate my radios fully and the right way ? Me and my wife would like to use them for long distance communication if need be and I want to set up a channel for just her and me for the just in case day if you know what I mean
There's a way to set that you can only hear and can't talk back but I just programmed my 5R and don't remember what it was you set the "off" on. But I went thru mine and set those channels to off.
You are probably referring to the Offset, which has to do with Repeaters. The long short of it, Repeaters Transmit on one frequency (i.e. 146.900) but Receive on another frequency (146.300 [AKA the frequency you transmit on]). For 2M repeaters, the offset is usually 0.600 Mhz shifted either +/-. There are plenty of videos about how to program this in, but if you go to my LIVESTREAM where I spoke about programming radios I showed how to do it on the UV-5R along with a few other models. Hope that helps.
THANKS
Slinky my best squeeze. In armed forces. Travel and home. Had 3 gator clamps and a tuner. My sw listing set up was as sharp as a tack. From 550am to 100 mhz fm 😊😊
That's awesome, so a Shortwave antenna of sorts?
@NukaVaultReadiness yes very much so while on field duty my Capitan ...his child was stuck under gun point of terrorism. I gave him minute by minute up dates "the piolet kicked the gunman off the aircraft." And gave my commander the relief needed. he then gave permission to Cary my sw radio ...where we went out. . With out harassment what so ever...
A real winner...a three story balcony. Do your work and settle.
I’m level one… trying to learn from more advanced
Welcome to the hobby and service of Amateur Radio! There is plenty to learn, and probably more than you may ever learn in your lifetime, but it's all fun!
I buy Japanese Radios, these cheap Chinese radios they do not transmit properly, many of them have sparse emissions, and the quality is horrible! I have icom id-52 kenwood D75A and a Yaesu FT5D, All radio or Japanese made,
Alot of these are my backups, but I do want to get another Yaesu.
Hi just purchased two mini baofeng uv-5r want to know how to use these and what is a good antenna to get for long range that is short
Thank you for teaching me
Hope it helps, I plan to do an actual build it video in the future.
I made one a couple of years ago. It matched easily with an MFJ-939 tuner. I never made a single contact with it, but it had big ears. I could hear DX from all over.
First today?! And now a slinky will be regulated by the FCC!😂
Can you imagine!
Use a choke at the radio or at the 9-1 end !
I do need to try that, thanks for the input!
That's awesome
1:46 “…this acts as a box…” 1: it IS a box. I can see it. it’s a box. 2: what does it mean to act as a box? To be a 3d rectangular shape, hollow inside, so it can contain other things? Yah, I’m quite confident it is an actual box, and not merely acting as a box. “Helps take out different impedance levels.” Uh, not quite. It transforms from one impedance to another impedance. It doesn’t take out levels, it transforms them so they’re a closer match to each other. “…because radios like to have balanced systems…” Usually not. Yes, radios from decades ago, from before the invention of coax, radios were designed to work with balanced systems. But now they are designed to work with UNbalanced systems. That’s exactly why you’re using an unun, to transform from one UNbalanced impedance to another UNbalanced impedance. I get what you MEAN, but the problem is you’re using the words incorrectly. Not necessarily a technical understanding problem, but a vocabulary problem. So, the tuner and unun combined were sufficient to receive on 20m. Why not demonstrate that you can effectively transmit? What was the SWR without the tuner? What SWR was the tuner able to get down to? What’s the resonant frequency of the slinky vertical? Does the resonant frequency change when stretching out the slinky more or less? I’ve been interested in slinky antennas for some time, and a couple years ago, ordered a pair of the larger size slinkys from ebay, with the intent to use on the ends of an inverted V dipole to try to extend it down to the 160m band. A month later, they cancelled and refunded. Dang it. But just now, I paused from typing this comment & found some place online to try again. Hopefully in January, they’ll ship a couple out and I can try some experiments. When I do, I will shoot a video including pertinent details like resonant frequency, bandwidth below 2:1 SWR… probably WSPR or FT8 results, proving not only RX, but TX efficacy.
Totally appreciate all the information you are giving in this comment! This video was made to be a very wide overview of how I did the setup. Have gotten feedback that some of the technical terms I do talk about has gone over people's heads, so I decided to try to explain it in best layman terms as possible. Another video, probably detailing how I built it, along with all the actual technical happenings will be planned for the future.
@@NukaVaultReadiness Yeah, it is one thing to use simpler words. The "layman's terms" as you say. It is quite another to use incorrect terms which end up being misleading. You're trying to dumb it down for some, without making them dumber. Instead of saying that "radios like to have balanced systems", perhaps just say "a compatible match" or "a good match". Then perhaps a simple analogy of what a good match is. Here's an example off the top of my head: A good impedance match between the transmitter and the antenna system is like riding your bike in an appropriate, comfortable gear. If you're going uphill and your bike is in a high gear, it's very hard - maybe impossible. If you're going downhill fast and your bike is in a low gear, your legs can't keep up with how fast the pedals would need to go to apply any power. So choosing a 4:1, or 9:1, or 49:1 un-un (or bal-un as the case may be) is like the bike's front set of 2 or 3 gears, getting the match roughly in range. And the antenna tuner (be that internal in the transceiver, or an external unit) is like the bike's rear 5 to 7 gears, allowing further adjustment to find the most comfortable, appropriate match.
Appreciate your input good sir!
Slinky dipole, two soldered together for each leg. Fed with a tuner.
That may very well be in the future!
An old technique that still works.. as long as you get a good quality slinky as I have seen a few cheap one spark or even melt due to low quality metals.
Add more slinkys
Pondering doing that.
Used to hear old hams say that (when the bands was open) there was a guy in downtown New York who loaded up an old mattress spring on the roof of his apartment building. They say....he got out. Coat hanger stories. I have two boxed Slinky's on my shelf right above my radios. I plan someday to make a stretchable dipole. They were on sale at Meijer for 2 bucks. I haven't bought a premade commercial antenna in years. When you build and it works, that's the feeling I go for. All wire antennas here.
That feeling when you get something like this to work is like no other. Such a great feeling of accomplishment. Awesome stuff!
I made an antennae out of a metal slinky 35 years ago. It worked great for AM radio. From the upper Adirondacks I routinely picked up 700 WLW in Cincinnati, Ohio, WLS Chicago, WABC New York City, WIRL in Peoria, Illinois and a couple of others that I can't remember the call signs of. I also tried it on shortwave with fair results. Picked up stations in Britain, and I picked up HCJB in Quito, Ecuador routinely. The radio I used was a Realistic Astronaut 8 multi band radio. I miss that radio!
Enjoy hearing stories like this. I intended to keep trying to make antennas for myself. Want to try something out of coat hangers next for VHF/UHF.
@@NukaVaultReadiness Thank you. Another that that works is chicken wire. 😅 LOL!
Great antenna! I have been using one for POTA for a few years now. It stays in my go-box. String it up in a tree or use it on a fiberglass pole. 73
I am having loads of fun with it! May run it NVIS next.
That´s great. I modified it and build an L-antenna with an electric fence spring gate coil in horizontal direction. I have extended the antenna at the beginning and at the end with 6 feet of wire. With an UNUN 9:1 it covers 80 m - 6 m Band. Next summer I will test your vertical version. 73, DG3IS, Harry
That is awesome! So it works well in the NVIS setup as well, that was my next experiment.
