There were hotels everywhere but by the 80s, most of the hotels were turned into senior housing and condos because they were empty the rest of the year. The Holiday Rivermont near the water was one. The Bishops used to stay there back in the 70s. - 80s. A hotel in Memphis was a financial albatross and not a good investmestment back in the day. That's why they dumped that Chisca Hotel on us. A money pit. My family been going to Memphis and working with the church since the 40s and knew the founders and some lived with Bishop JO. It was not an easy situation, but the church bled money to members with their hands in the kitty. Each sub Auxillary Convention used to operate independantly. The used to raise and spend their own money. They used to pull in their offerings and send a small report to headquarters then keep the rest. There was no real financial accounting. They finally brought every auxillary in and centralized their funds through Memphis and put everyone on a budget and audited them more closely. I can't remember when it happened, could be during the last years of JO or GE, but I know people had a fit that they had to turn that money over. We started disconnecting associations and quit going so my awareness to the goings on fades. We still had General Board friends that would pass info but we lost interest over the years and they died off too. And yes the Bishop seat was bought and sold through money and scandal. Some of my info is grey, and I can't remember all the details but what I do remember is 2nd hand knowledge from people that was in the house and the HQ office. Most people that know the real history are dead and gone. Also, my sister paid $500 to COGIC in 1983 to memorialize my mother's name on a BRICK to help rebuild the Chisca Center. Never got built and the money wasn't accounted for.
