    Ummmm, are you not still going to get shingle particle build up in the eves troughs that turns into mud within the troughs itself as the particles will pass through the holes in the gutter guard ? So you still need todo a once a year clean out …….

    IMPORTANT: Since there is no such thing as a gutter guard that is 100% maintenance free, it's wise to anticipate cleaning the guard and gutter. USEFUL TIP: Cut a 6" length of the first panel and put it over the "high" end of the gutter, THEN cut another 6" length of the first panel and put it over the downspout for the gutter. Now you can work from the downspout end of the gutter with your full panels of gutter guard laying them on top of the previous panel. When the time comes (every 2-4 years) to clean out the gutters, remove the 6" panel at the high end and run a garden hose (with jet nozzle) and snake it all the way down to the downspout. If the downspout clogs, remove the 6" panel and clean out the clog. Removing a 6" panel is much easier and causes less wear-and-tear on the shingles compared to a 4 foot panel.

    INSTALLATION TIP: Since no gutter guard is 100% maintenance free, install the gutter guards for easy maintenance in mind. Cut a 6 inch piece off the first panel (4 feet long in box) and use 2 screws to secure it on the "high-end" of the gutter (farthest away from the downspout, , ,cut another piece off the first panel and measure it so it reaches the "low-end" of the gutter and reaches to just past the downspout. 2 (or 3) screws will secure this piece over the downspout. Now, install the remaining length of the first panel at the downspout side, notch it to overlap 1/2 inch. Install the rest of the 4 foot panels normally (overlapping each) until you you get to the "high-end". The last panel might need to be measured and "notched" to meet flush with the 6" piece at the "high-end". Shingle grit/small debris will inter the gutter through the holes in the gutter guard so every 3-5 years, you may need to put a "jet-nozzle" on the end of your garden hose, remove the 6" panel at the high-end and snake the hose into the gutter down to the downspout end. The jet nozzle will wash/blow out all the grit and small debris. If the downspout gets clogged, remove the short panel over the downspout and unclog the downspout.

    I note you are not using the provided panhead screws. They are a pain to hold in place while you start the hole. I've dropped 5 in five units. Also, I can't get the back edge under the shingle/up the side of the fascia. Each unit is taking me ages to install as I trim the back. If you've got an older gutter or reshingled home, prepare for a long and difficult diy.

      The screws go in fairly easily with a little pressure. The trick is finding a good fitting #1 Robertson. If you have a spring loaded centre punch use it to create a small divot so the screws don't wander (especially for the fascia screws}.

    He installs the gutter guard from a ladder on the ground. I would like to see how he installs the guards on the 2nd floor of the home where an extension ladder is leaning up against the gutter. Any one have any suggestions? No, I am not going on the 2nd floor roof and leaning over. Thanks

    • @onesmartchick50
      @onesmartchick50 2 года назад

      I just installed these this week and had to use an extension ladder for the back of the garage as the property has a bit of a slope. I found the ladder actually helped to keep the guard nicely in place while screwing it in. Where possible I screwed the middle of the guard down first-that held it securely in place and the guard didn't shift, but also allowed for a bit movement or adjustments if needed at the ends. I did not pre-drill as it wasn't necessary.

      @@onesmartchick50 I put these on too, about a month ago. Since no gutter guard is 100% maintenance free, I decided to plan my panels to make "gutter cleaning" easier. I cut 6" off the first panel and screwed the 6" panel at the "high" end of the gutter. I "notched" the remaining piece of the first panel to overlap the 6" panel by 1/2"-1". Now, if I need to wash out any grit/debris I merely remove 1 or 2 screws on the 6" panel and insert a garden hose with a straight jet nozzle and I can "snake" it all the way down to the downspout for a complete cleaning. Its so much easier to remove/reinstall a 6" piece rather than a full size (4 foot) panel, and less wear-and-tear on the shingles/gutter. I did the same thing when I got to the downspout so if I wash out the gutter but the downspout clogs, I can easily remove the 6" panel over the downspout, clear the clog, and replace the panel with 1 or 2 screws.

      @@dennisgarcia5511 That's a great idea! I am going to install these on my parent's home and I will have to apply your genius! The only problem is they have more coniferous trees than deciduous and I'm afraid the needles my find their way vertically through the holes.

      @@onesmartchick50 I have pine needles too, but the majority seem to blow off nicely. I spent $10 for the gutter-guard brush online and mounted an iPad above it so I can see the gutters, while standing on the ground, as I clean off the needles/debris. Facetime or zoom with iPhone/Android mounted on pole at eye-level works better than recording for later re-play. Cudo's to you for the help you're giving to your parents. Good job!!

    If you watch the video it shows that when he starts to attached the screen on the gutter, the front edge is hanging over by 1/2. Then it cuts to the screen being screwed in with the screen and the gutter being even. I have standard size gutters and these gutter guards will not fit because the front edge of the guard is out further than the gutter so it's impossible to screw it in. From I have been told by many people, you should never slide any type of leaf guard up under the shingles because you can either break the shingle or break the seal that is keeping the water from going into your house. Any suggestions.

Any salesman who says differently is just being dishonest.

      We have a system that debri can not enter the gutter. Minor maintenance but easy to maintain but for debri entering the gutters that's impossible. Smart screen will allow some debri in the gutters. It also has the shelf effect that will allow debri to sit on top of the gutter. Mike didn't do his research on gutter guards. Loosing credibility on this one.

  • @tomgates316
    @tomgates316 4 года назад

    Hey Mike, did you go back and visit later after fall leaves and spring seeds? These look to be similar to many other gutter compost systems that claim to be gutter guards. While the gutters may not clog, those covers trap all sorts of debris. They will claim the “dry” debris will blow away. How much “dry” debris do you find in gutters. These are just shallow gutters with holes in them. Still prone to clogging and needing cleaning. Looked at options for years. Found most all to be gimmicks and not worth the time or money. The kid down the block cleaning the gutters twice a year more practical. But I don’t have gutters 45 feet up. But that makes use of these shelf solutions even more problematic when the need to be cleared.

    Just curious, with these laying flat doesn’t it cause a “shelf” effect causing leaves and such to just collect enabling water to enter the gutter? I’m in the market to replace the gutter guards that came with the house and doing research as to which product would be the best

    • @boboliver3054

      There are all kinds of gutter guards and they all claim to be the best. Mike Holmes is a well known person but remember he is getting paid to say that this system is good. From what I have heard over an over, the best gutter guard is to not have anything on there.Once or twice a year you go on the roof, or pay someone, and you are done.

      This stuff is garbage. Now, the home owner has to remove a boat load of screws to clear their getters. Dirt, shingle grit, pine/fir needles, and seeds will enter; and your gutter now has vegetation growing in them. Gutter screens with big holes in them are a joke.

    • @dennisgarcia5511
      @dennisgarcia5511 2 года назад

      @@davidlightfoot348 No gutter guard is 100% maintenance-free. The key is to make it easy to clean. I have had good luck with cutting the panel at the "high" end of the gutter 6" from the end-cap (2 screws to secure it). All grit, needles and seeds are removed by removing the two screws and putting a brass jet nozzle on a garden hose (full water pressure) and "snaking" it down to the downspout. Another 6" panel over the downspout is convenient if/when the downspout gets clogged. Its a helluva lot easier to remove a 6" panel rather than a 4' panel, and less wear-and-tear on the shingles. It has worked well for me.
