Home Print Studio Vlog: Always Take a Ghost Print
Ruth, where did you get that little wooden 'door knob' burnisher? So intriguing! Thanks for the comparisons!
Hi- I got that one from www.greatart.co.uk in the printmaking section.
Good comparison of inks! I have all 3 types but I have a ton of oil paint so I'm starting with that. Recently bought a tube of Daler Rowney's Oil-based Print Medium that you add to oil paint to make it into printmaking ink, it also let's you make very transparent overlaying 'veils' of colour, have you ever tried this product? I've just bought one so my experimentation has only just begun :). Love your little home studio!
I've tried one medium (can't remember if it's Daler Rowney) though I found it toned down the colours slightly. I may try your suggestion though- things are always changing and getting better.
Thank you for the info. Is using oil on non oil paper archival? How should I protect the tissue from the oil?
I don't protect the paper from oil, so to speak, though you can buy 'buffered tissue' which has a coating on it (though the ink doesn't sink in as well on that). I find that I'm rolling the ink out so thinly that it doesn't really make a difference to the paper. Eventually, of course, it probably will break down somewhat, but the pieces I made 20 years ago are still going strong.
Thanks for this simple, useful information. I'm wondering, though, what do you do with your oily clean-up rags?
They go in the bin! Though I feel that they are pretty biodegradable as they are essentially fabric, oil and pigment, so I'm not adding to anything bad in the ocean!
@@printingathomewithruthande1868 Yes, it doesn't sound toxic, but I was thinking about combustibility. Do you have a metal bin? I want to go back to oils, and I'm curious about how others handle the rags. Vegetable oil sure is better than turpentine, though!
@@rosemarystarace6511 yes, vegetable oil is combustible
I love the finish on this beautiful piece of your artwork. you mentioned that you sealed all the elements before you went over it with the liquitex matte medium what was it that you used to seal the piece initially? Thank you so much.
Just a spray fixative- to seal any pastel, pencil etc.
Such beautiful work….both calm & subtle
Thank you!
Love watching you create and thank you for sharing your processes and supplies! I have a couple of questions: 1. Even with applying such thin layers of oil paint how long do the prints take to dry before using in other art pieces? 2. If using “water soluble” oil paints will they reactivate later (such as when using the Nori paste or other adhesive)?
Hi. In answer to your questions- yes the oil paint does take a little while to dry depending on temperature and weather (it can take several days in Winter, but only 24 hours in summer). But the good news is, it doesn't buckle the paper as it drys. I don't tend to use water soluble paints much and not for collage papers, so I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question. However, I would think the answer would be yes, as the nori paste will contain some water. If you were only to apply it to the non-ink side, you may avoid that though. Hope that helps.
@@printingathomewithruthande1868 Thank you, I really appreciate you responding and your answers :)
Very useful..looking forward to the rest of your videos about printing equipment..will yoi also please cover the inks you use? Thanks Rosemary
Will do- it won't be til next week at least though as I'm on my hols. You could subscribe for notifications.
Thanks for showing your work. A couple questions: You mentioned using Mark Resist film. What did you use for your wash? and did you use the smooth side or smooth side of the film? Thanks.
I used Indian ink for my washes on Mark Resist. I used the grainy side of the Mark resist to 'paint' on. I've just made a video about the process actually- here- ruclips.net/video/xcpnc-YEqmk/видео.html
That was really interesting. Printmaking is fairly new to me (2 years) and I'm learning a lot from you. I have your self-paced courses and am enjoying them immensely. Thank you for showing us this etching process; it gives a beautifully soft and diffused result.
Great- glad it was of help to you. It is a lovely process- a pity it needs various bits of equipment usually found in print studios not at home.
Lovely demonstration, thank you for sharing. When exposing the plate, do you first expose an aquatint screen before exposing your acetate drawing?
Good question! And if so, who is a supplier of aquatint screens please?
Yes, that's the process. Each UV unit has it's own timings etc, but it's always 'aquatint' screen first, then your positive worked on screen (either photographic or painted/drawn) and then you harden the plate off with UV light after. It's best to take a course with someone who can walk you through the machinery etc. though
I haven't worked that out yet! I use the one provided at my print studio- I'll see if I can find out.
Beautiful work. Very atmospheric.
Thank you- always appreciated!
This is all good advice for writers also. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Thanks for addressing this common problem. Encouraged me not to ‘give up’ when there’s time constraints.
Good- I'm glad it's helped!
How do you hang that on a wall?
I ask a framer to make a 'tray' frame for it and hang it like that. If your wood is thick enough, you might be able to put fixings in the back without a frame too.
I love this video! Great tips for short time. And a lot of motivation. In former days I had a problem that I couldn't paint or make other creative things while we were on a journey with our camping car. And I never felt the urge to use sketchbooks. But nowadays I have learned to take some paper with me and my watercolours and pencils. They need only little space and they can't ruin the furniture. And I also have enough collage material, so I can play around if I want to, even if it's only for a few minutes. Working with these things I can follow my creative path. And sometimes this sparks new ideas for projects that I can work on when returned home.
I'm so glad to hear that- collage is great for 'quick wins' too.
Thanks for the pep talk. It came a the right time. I hope you're having an enjoyable summer.
Good- glad it was good timing!
It's like magic
I am really enjoying watching your process. I am not a printmaker, however, I work a lot with my gelli plate and experimenting with implementing some of your amazing printmaking techniques into my work. Thanks so much for sharing your process. 😍
Great- I'm glad you're getting ideas. I tend not to use a gelli plate, just because I like to press into the back of my paper quite a lot and a harder surface is better for that. But obviously you can still get great layering effects from gel plates.
Love this series!
Thanks. They haven't been very popular with customers so far, but I like them too.
Love the technique for making those bold marks at the end. Fabulous! ❤
I love these colors and marks. So interesting how you created these pieces. 😍
I'm glad you enjoy these 'tours'. I wasn't't sure I would continue with them, but getting a few good comments makes a difference!
These are quite amazing. I love the colors and the textures.
Thank you. As you can see I like to mix and match my printmaking techniques quite a bit, and that often means you can get lovely textures (sometimes by accident!)
Cute smile.
Wow thank you so much, straight to the point, quick and easy course to follow...new sub here...needed to update what i knew and forgot...thank you. Cannot wait to watch all your videos.
Great- glad to be of service! You're the second person this week that's described my teaching as 'straight to the point'! I'll take it as a compliment!
Yummy colors
I know- that's why I love oil paints- acrylics just aren't the same (for me anyway)
So generous as always with your methods and processes!
Loving your work. The gestural white marks are really nice. 😍
Thank you!
Really love your experimental processes Ruth!! TFS!!
Great- glad to be of service!

Glad you like it!

Thank you!
Great news about Jamaica St. Studios 👍
Absolutely- we've been blown away by everyone's generosity.
How fab to have a creating space away from home, enjoy.
Congratulations on new studio!! 👏🏻👏🏻
thank you- I'm loving it I must say.
Congrats on the new studio with a huge window. Nice. I'm in Vancouver, BC and it looks very similar to our artist spaces here. Have fun settling in.
Thanks- I'm guessing your view might be nicer in Vancouver?
Congratulations on getting your new studio space... I hope the long-term future is secured. Happy creating!
Thank you. Yes, we're getting there slowly with the fundraising. I'm going to enjoy my time there whatever the future anyway.
Magnifique ...
Loved the little yellow line. Super. Thanks.
Is this process archival?
As far as I know. Other artists also do it. Essentially, the two different mediums seal the paper and board from the air and moisture. Cold wax medium would essentially be like the surface of an oil painting when dry. However, I have just started doing this technique, so can't say from experience what will happen in decades time. It certainly shouldn't yellow.
@@printingathomewithruthande1868 cool thank you! I’ve been wanting to try with some of my prints but was worried about the wood underneath but either way gesso shoukd be fine!!! Thanks!😊
gorgeous
thank you!
Thankyou for sharing your process,I really enjoyed that.
Good- glad to be of service!
It's gorgeous!!!
Thank you! I think I will probably add to it some more yet, but a good start I think.
What printing ink do you use?
I actually use oil paint to monoprint on tissue paper- the colours are amazing, and tissue picks up all colour and marks so well, you don';t really need sticky printing inks.
Really pretty, do you use these in art or is this the art and if so, how do you preserve and display it. Thanks
Hi, yes I get these type of prints float mounted (there are previous videos showing how I do that, or you can get a framer to do it for you) and framed. I am also currently working on using these type of prints collaged onto board to make mixed media pieces. However, this one will be a piece in it's own right and framed.
Great to see this process , what is the surface you are using please. Andy
I use a large piece of plastic/perspex to roll ink onto (it's not very obvious in the video I know!)
Gorgeous big sky hanging over that landscape. It reminds me of places from my childhood. Thank you.
So enjoy watching you work!
Looking great Ruth - I'm enjoying this process after your landscape impressions course, Richard.
I’m SO delighted to hear that you were inspired by your trip to Skye!
Excellent video! What is the surface you work on?
