    OK, so here in the UK. The shift is opposite to your gearbox. We shift the cubs gears down for 1st, down for 2nd, etc. When you want to slow down, just heel backwards and change. If you're coming to lights and need to stop. STAY IN 4TH!. When you've stopped, you can tap down once for neutral, and again for 1st. It's a cyclical gearbox. No drama's, no jerking or locking up the rear end. Just a nice a smooth gear change. I understand Honda had to do it the way you guys have it, as your transport dept didn't think you'd be able to work it out the way the rest of the world has it! 😅😅

  • @pierrelauwers8719

    This video is to the point. I would add that this centrifugal clutch is quite heavier than a normal one, so that the shiftings are pleaged by a strong inertia. So we need to shift up slower than with a classical bike, while the rev-matching is very important to master while shifting down. Mind you, on a wet road, if you downshift without this precise blip on the throttle, you could even fall. I drive Cubs since 1976, and my conclusion is that they are more difficult to drive properly than a common motorbike. But it is worth the pain as they are more fun and more efficient than scooters with their CVT transmission.

    I got a question, i'm having problems with my shift, i do the same thing u explain in the video. On first the shift is perfect, but, after a while the shift from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd becomes really hard and the "friction zone" disappears, It almost seems like you don't pull the clutch properly, the mechanic told me that i'm wrong about Gradually release the lever while downshifting... U got some tips?

This man speaks truth, I went honda recommended torque spec with mine and stripped the threads of the bolt and the inside threads somehow... now i hand torque them x pattern like the video suggests and use gasket sealant to make sure there are no leaks because of seating issues with the filter cover. HAND TIGHTEN WITH A SMALL TORQUE WRENCH and check for leaks and it should work

    I don't want to be an a**, but the distinction between a scooter and a motorcycle is not whether or not it's automatic. Pretty much all Vespas up to the 90s were NOT automatic, although shifted differently from the classic motorcycle shifting system.

  • @BradleyMunsen
    @BradleyMunsen 11 месяцев назад

    Thanks for this! Just bought my Super Cub about a month ago, first motorcycle ever (never rode a scooter either), and I definitely need to try the feathering thing you talked about. I knew about rolling the throttle when downshifting for smoother shifts, and sometimes I've gotten it just perfect, but I haven't gotten that consistent yet. I bet it's because sometimes I'm feathering the clutch without realizing it, and other times I'm not. Unfortunately I live in Minnesota which means the bike is already garage-bound for the winter, but I'll definitely get back on it to learn this next spring!

    Hey is it possible for me to just feed the actual wire through instead of swapping the whole cable?

  • @sam.merritt
    @sam.merritt Год назад

    so if I understand correctly, when you keep talking about "feathering it out" and "slowly let the clutch out", you're really just talking about letting the engine idle, thereby disengaging the centrifugal clutch, then shifting while the centrifugal clutch isn't connecting the engine to the rear wheel, then slowly adding throttle to make the centrifugal clutch slowly spin up and catch up to the rear wheel in the lower gear? I'm not sure I'm right but I have no idea what you're talking about when you say "feather" and "slowly let the clutch out." Obviously you're onto something but I can't grasp what you mean.

    • @NZMantaGSi
      @NZMantaGSi Год назад

      By feathering it out / slowly letting the clutch out, he means not just booting the hell out of the shift lever up and down as a lot of people seem to do. When you push the lever up/down to full travel to change gear, then you release it back down/up smoothly to re-engage the clutch smoothly instead of just dumping it. Whilst releasing the lever you will very quickly get good at rev matching with the throttle and it will become a very rapid smooth shift just like on a normal bike. Right, now for the bolloks! The centrifugal clutch doesn't really factor into it once you have taken off. If you want to get really technical there are actually three clutches in the transmission. I've got one in pieces at the moment, its tempting to make a video explaining, might get around to it one day. Picture a drivetrain in your head - Engine -> Centrifugal Clutch -> Multiplate 'Manual' Clutch -> Gearbox -> Wheel Start the bike in neutral. Centrifugal clutch is not engaged as engine revs are too slow. Put the bike in first gear and open the throttle, centrifugal clutch grabs and the bike starts moving. The centrifugal clutch has engaged and is now driving the multiplate clutch which drives the gearbox which drives the back wheel. Righto, at this point FORGET about the centrifugal clutch, for all intents and purposes it doesn't matter now. You want to go faster. Press up on the gearshift. As you press up on the shift lever, it begins to disengage the multiplate clutch which then breaks the feed of power to the gearbox. As you continue to push up on the shift lever, the gearbox shifts into second gear. Once you start to let the gear lever down, it re-engages the multiplate clutch and then engine power once again goes through into the gearbox and to the wheel. It helps to understand there is actually a third clutch in the gearbox called a sprag clutch. Essentially this is a type of clutch that will let a shaft freely spin one way, but will lock up the clutch turning it the other way. The sprag clutch links the centrifugal clutch inner section (fixed to the motor crank) and the outer section (drives the multiplate clutch). What this means for the Cub is a bit hard to explain but imagine the bike is up in the air, back wheel free, in gear with the motor idling. If the motor is turning faster than the rear wheel (oversimplifying it heaps here) then the centrifugal clutch takes care of power transfer in its standard way - nice and smooth,. If the rear wheel is turning faster than the engine (ie; coasting down a hill) the sprag clutch immediately locks the centrifugal clutch inner and outer. Downshift and dump the gear lever quickly and you'll feel it really fast! That sprag clutch is the secret sauce that lets you push start a Cub as well as giving you engine braking etc, it basically makes it feel like a conventional motorcycle manual drivetrain once the centrifugal clutch has done its one job of getting you moving. I better just make a video, this looks like a whole wall of nonsense doesn't it!

    Only been driving mine for about a month (on and off depending on weather and working on mods) and I've learned that 30mph is the "sweet spot" for 3rd/4th up and down shifting. Going from 3rd to 4th at 30mph doesn't make the engine rev so high and waste your fuel mileage and going from 4th to 3rd helps keep the engine from revving high when you're letting out the clutch pedal. Obivously lower RPM's are better, but that's been my experience so far. I have also found that, while I'm learning my u-turns, 2nd gear seems optimal because if you are working the throttle, you're not going to snap your neck back and forth trying to keep the speed constant.
