Translation Theory - Episode 1: "Gotham Knights"
The premiere episode(?) of "Translation Theory", where I cite examples from the localized versions of the game "Gotham Knights" - with a heavy focus on German - to illustrate the problems encountered by translators when it comes to such things as precedent, untranslatables, puns, wordplay, and idioms, poems, and acronyms. Plus, I advance the blasphemous idea that a good translation might actually surpass the original if conditions are right.

I created this abomination in order to answer the question of whether I can get more fans of Natalie Imbruglia or "Goblin Slayer" to hate me.
Cardboard Box, You've Failed Me... :(

When an AI gets a little too smart for its own good, the end result is an eight minute orgy of blood, bullets, and unbridled chaos. The cardboard box failure takes place around the 2:08 mark and things go to hell in a handbasket almost immediately. As for whether or not a newbie like me actually manages to successfully complete this Level 56 Base Development Platform infiltration...well, you'll...

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - "Kill Count" Base Development Platform Infiltration

I decided to participate in Konami's latest FOB Event - which is running from October 27 to November 5, 2015 - by infiltrating the Base Development Platform of "Kill Count", a rival paramilitary force that was set up as a target for players to attack. Though I had a couple of extremely close calls and made extensive use of the Night Vision Goggles, I managed to successfully infiltrate the FOB w...
Mighty Orbots - Extended Intro (High Quality)

Pretty much what the title says: a high-quality version of the extended introduction to the Saturday morning cartoon classic, "Mighty Orbots"! :)
This is good work. This video was very hard to find though. Even searching directly for "Translation Theory" brought up other results
My robot is also named Bort.
What sing the opening
From my late teens 👌👌:👌👌👌👌👌👌 Thank you keep it up, I'm 70 now high five✋
This is what would happen if Skynet left earth.... Unbria would a Terminator in space.
Compared to Voltron
That intro bangs hard AF.
Mighty gobots ? 😂
Yup....I miss this kinda creative quality.
Man, that brass and base...

Lol too similar to Gobots 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I see nothing to assume this series should have been cancelled due to that nonsense.
Don’t forget transformers
That Disco-ish music in the intro before the intro was sooooo good, felt sooooo soothing 😍😍😍
I was hoping Thundercat would mention Yu Yu Hakusho’s theme song but I’m not disappointed by this
Too bad this cartoon was assassinated...the animation is breathtaking and the stories and characters are really great. The Gobots were always lame.. Orbots are awesome!
RIP Gary Owens. You were a big part of this show. Does anyone else notice how the theme song singer sounds like Barry Gordon? (Orbots commander.)
This is the closest to DC's Metal Men in animated form!!
Americans must answer for their crimes

This explains the whole childhood
VOLTRON KNOCKOFF🤔🙄
Voltron americano
too bad this show was sued outta existence. i thought had so much potential.
They should reboot this cartoon without woke'ing it.
Kind of a bummer that this 1980s theme song was forgotten. It rocks out fairly well. Sure, it might not have shredded as hard as Thundercats or Transformers 1986. However, it is great. I loved the look of 1970s and 1980s mecha. Sometimes I wonder if I was born to love it. Other times I wonder if it was because I loved the interior of my mom's 1985 Nissan Maxima. I think about how I got a burning desire to visit Japan in 1989. The Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo went on sale and it sounded like magic to me. I saw pictures that I now realize included Shibuya Crossing. I loved robots and tech gizmos. Maybe it makes me wonder how people didn't get the desire.
Happy 40th Birthiversary, Mighty Orbots.
Voltron, I. mean Orbots
A reboot of this show, a la Voltron and She-Ra, would be EPIC!
GO, MIGHTY ORBOTS! MIGHTY ORBOTS 40TH ANNIVERSARY! 1984-2024!
The 80's aesthetic was something else, gleaming and chrome.
Hello and thank you for exploring this topic. Ever since growing up on in the US on 4kids anime and realizing as an older more mature person, their English adaptations were wildly different then their source material I've always found the concept of adapting, translation, localizing, and even censorship of foreign media across various languages and cultures super interesting. As someone who's been a fan of anime and Japanese games for a while and now exploring other foreign media (kdramas, German TV shows, Chinese anime), I truly appreciate translators and localizers who do their best to keep the spirit of the source material but also try to make it accessible to those who don't know the native language or origin of whatever it is. Now more than ever I think it's interesting that translation in media is coming up more than ever as international media becomes more and more prominent in "mainstream" (ie not just American English language Hollywood productions) thanks to the advent of streaming. Ie a big one in Squid Game had a few translation consistency errors in the subs pointed out by Koreans. Also awesome on you for highlighting German translations! I watch another German video game based RUclipsr often points out the differences in German releases of Valve games like Half Life and TF2 often highlighting The censorship as well as the literal translations or even voice actors.
I believe that the "Something in the Clay" trophy is referencing the cliche horror/triller movie line "There's something in the water". You'll often hear it when teens are having a party out in the waters at the beach or a lake. Someone will look down, see something, and whisper "Guys... I think there's something in the water..." and then the mayhem begins.
This is refreshingly insightful and educational beyond the unfaithful localization vs. AI localization praise debate given the recent dramas. I hope you get around to making more of these types of videos. 👍
Thank you for standing up to arrogance.
oh hey, a guy that actually seems to care about the material they translate (or it seems do the QA on if i understood it correctly). I cant tell if you are insanely good at german or a native, because that was the cleanest Hochdeutsch ("high german" for the non german speakers - basically the 'vanilla' of german dialects) I ever heard! What I would maybe have added is how in Germany, it is pretty normal to have some words lifted or slightly adapted from english. One example being in software development, noone would call a branch a "Zweig". Or how we sometimes use verbs from english, but conjugate it as if it were a german one (leading to sometimes hillariously complex irregular borrowed verbs). Another thing is that I despise a lot of dubbed characters. In german (Germans dub EVERYTHING) the voices often dont match, seem to be mixed strangely, have completely wrong intonations and just feel fake if that is any way to describe it... Part 2 when? also also: man... showing that clip of Pikamee wasnt just topical, but a gut punch, remembering what happened. I hope she is doing well after the reincarnation, knowing the industry, when we see signs its way too late.
the animation was even better than Transformers...
Ono looked like a 5 year old girl, But she was the most mature of the group and kept Rob on his toes.
The main theme for shows like Orbots and Voltron is that bigger challenges can only be tackled by people when they come together and work as a team.
Voltron and orbots together as the United group we saw a robots together as one
95% of that cel budget was usually in the openings and the actual shows looked like cr*p.
My all time favorite Saturday morning cartoon then one day it was just gone
This show _ruled._ Fuck Tonka for taking it away from us.
Loooooved this show as a kid!!
A forgotten Saturday morning gem this cartoon was awesome
Wow.. this took me back.
This feels like something Alan Moore would give a dark twist to. Like the Orbots each have a human brain in them, like Umbra killed them or whatever and the Galactic good guys installed them in prototype robo bodies. Probably sounds stupid.
Lunar! Your RUclips! I found it!
Aw snap, one of my fav anime pfps got a youtube channel! subbin'
Thundercat brought me here.
I never heard of your voice till now
very interesting topic. especially translation of those achievement and what they consider.
Glad you think so. 🙂
