I'm not even from the generation where this was the "norm" and I'm definitely not offended when safe in the knowledge that these comics are purposely highlighting the absurdity of attitudes during that time (and sadly in some places today) . Seems many in the comments has managed to either be offended and/or missed the point, forgetting who these people are what their backgrounds were. What makes this content timeless, is the fact that it does offend people now, only further purporting the notion that this behaviour is unacceptable, whilst the anglo-indian & myanmar (then Burma) raised Spike plays a character from Pakistan that fights back and aids the lesser intelligent audience to decide Alf is ignorant, rather than simply being walked all over. I am British born, Scottish/Irish primarily and 2nd Generation Asian Immigrant. It's a SKIT, laugh AT the perpetrator of offense (ALF IS A CHARACTER - Whose purpose was to be laughed at not with) and maybe you'll be able to appreciate. Warren Mitchell has even gone on record prior to his death that he feared more laughed WITH Alf rather than AT him. Warren Mitchell was a socialist. Spike Milligan, on the other hand, was a confirmed racist. Said so, too.

Somewhat ironic, or not so, was that Warren Mitchell came from a family of Russian Jews. I'm sure he knew what it was to be persecuted because of race. I grew up with TV like this in England in the 1960s and 1970s. Now, in 2024, I live in California, and don't watch TV any more . . .

Can you believe how utterly racist we were as a Nation back then - DISGRACEFUL ! These old comedy clips shows how we have grown as a nation - we were all so stupid back in those days. We all think of Milligan as an intelligent quick witted comedian but these clips shows him up for a complete idiot - he should have know better as he lived in India and experienced the evil cast system first hand.

That was back in the day when we could make fun and laugh at racists. Here was a programme that often humiliated racist behaviour. Woke liberals destroyed all that and not for the betterment of minorities.

I lived through this era. But hell NO. This is exceptionally racist beyond faarny. I think Warren is the worst of them all. I understand the incursion of foreign cultures on the English society. But this isn't even vaguely accepting or welcoming. And now a days, Spikes character would be considered 'cultural appropriation'! (even thought that's BS).

Spike was born in India. My all time comedy hero, a genius. Even named my dog after him.

It was always great when Spike came on the show, (which he did many times being many different characters). Nothing better than Spike Milligan and Warren Mitchell going at it. These characters (did) and do exist, so sometimes, it realy is so close to watching real life.

Spike was a comedy genius. A one off. There will never be another.

IMO you can't compare Spike Milligan and Warren Mitchell. Spike was a true genius, naturally funny, wonderful, and could entertain children and adults alike.... his children's stories and poetry are magical and eternally enchanting, and his Pakistani and Indian characters were hilarious and inoffensive, because they were so obviously parodies without malicious intent. Warren Mitchell, on the other hand, whilst being a skilled enough actor, was far less endearing, and Alf Garnett was positively horrible! Spike is so missed....😢❤
