Kia ora internet!
I'm FutureCat, a trans non-binary person (pronouns they/them) from Ōtautahi Christchurch, in Aotearoa New Zealand. I'm a quilter, and I love to travel, so this channel is a rather random selection of travel, quilting and other crafts, a few vlogs documenting my transition, and a few on just whatever was catching my attention at the time - because life would be boring if I stuck to just one topic :-)
I post fortnightly (very occasionally more often if I have time).
If you enjoy a bit of randomness, then I hope you'll stick around and subscribe! (And if randomness isn't your thing, then just skip the videos that aren't on a topic that interests you - no hard feelings!)
Ka kite anō!
(Channel art created by my incredibly talented nibling Toby. Thanks Toby!!!)

Travel Local: Walking the Lake Dunstan bike trail
Harvestbird and I were in Central Otago recently, so decided to walk the new Lake Dunstan bike trail, which was completed a couple of years ago. We walked the section between Bannockburn and Clyde, which is about 26 km long, and took us just over 6 hours to walk.

I tried hand-quilting!
Просмотров 1872 месяца назад
I've always been a bit scared of hand-quilting, but a serendipitous discovery of exactly the right thread made me give it a go. And it was kind of fun, and not as hard as I expected (though I don't think I'll ever have the patience to be *really* good at it :-) Music: "Tupelo Train" by Chris Haugen (RUclips audio library, attribution not required) Opening title sequence created by Katherine Breed

The pun that turned into a quilt

I was inspired by a colleague's love of Prince (and the potential for a visual pun!) to create a mini-quilt as a retirement gift. Adding 3D elements to a mini-quilt
Просмотров 1796 месяцев назад
Yes, I know I was meant to be finishing off some of those WIPs, but there was a tight deadline on this one :-) I was invited to contribute a mini-quilt to an art exhibition, and my vision for it was a muted rainbow with a 3D poppy - I think it turned out pretty well! Adventures in America: A walk in the (not quite) wilderness

We spent a few days in Fairfax, Virginia, where we were visiting George Mason University. I spent a quiet morning looking for exotic (to me!) wildlife along Daniel's Run Trail, a walking track through a small patch of forest.

I love it space to store your iron??
I didn't think to add a specific space for my iron, but it does fit nicely on one of the shelves underneath.
The boxes are beautiful !!!! I use whatever box I can find and now that I see yours mine are so ugly.. maybe if I put mine in pretty boxes I’ll actually be motivated to get them finished… thanks for sharing 😊🌺
Woah so beautiful!
It is! I've been wanting to walk the trail ever since they built it (technically I did walk part of it in 1970-something before they filled the lake, but that old trail is deep underwater now!)
It must be strange to look at where you walked last time and have it be so out of reach
@jayshulamith3032 Very! I can remember looking up at the marker posts they had on the hill to show what the water level would be, and it seeming impossibly high. It's weird to look at the lake and know that the old road is down there somewhere, about 40m under the water.
Love that trail. I camped at Cairnmuir for 2 weeks, husband had business in Cromwell. I walked the trail everyday with my 2 dogs but no way as far as you went.
That must have been a wonderful place to walk the dogs!
Hi my quilting friend. Lovely spot where you were.
It is! I grew up near here, so it always feels like coming home to be in this landscape.
Beautiful! 🥰
It's such a lovely part of the country!
How beautiful thank you for sharing (we are in our rainy Fall season)
Thanks! We're in our rainy Spring season :-)
Beautiful trek
It is! I love this part of the country.
Thank you!💖
Glad you enjoyed it!
That's a beautiful quilt. Did you bring the spider into the house on the quilt? Time to vacuum. He may have brought some buddies with him.
Thanks! This is an old house, so there's lots of ways for spiders to get in. Whitetails don't make webs, so they can be hard to find, but yes, I did a good vacuuming in all the corners just in case!
Love love love the spider webs!!! It's a wonderful project. We sort of miss the Huntsmen spiders - they were so impressive to see (and harmless). Hope you are well!
Very cool! I'm sure LW (a bit of an assumption i guess) will love it
It's bad enough that we got whitetails invading from Australia, I don't want huntsmen as well! (I know they're harmless, but they still look terrifying!)
Pretty safe assumption! It was supposed to be a get well present, but she got well faster than I could make the quilt 😁 I dropped it round to her tonight, because she's off to Adelaide tomorrow, and she loved it!
Fabulously quilt!
Thanks!
So enjoyed ! Thank you..
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks beautiful ❤
Thanks!
Love the quilt and Halloween fabric in non-traditional colors. And the spider web quilting. Perfect
Thanks! Those colours seemed better suited to a New Zealand Halloween - it's spring here 😀
Awesome quilt…but I surely don’t like the real spider!! Ewwwww. I think your friend is going to love this!
I wasn't a fan of the real spider either!
Cool quilt and quilting! 🥰
Thanks!
Great job!! I wish my free motion quilting was any good. It’s not! Lol
Thanks! Don't give up on free-motion quilting - like anything, the only way to get good at it is to keep practicing (You should see the first quilts I made - the quilting is terrible!!)
It's awesome, spiders and all. It just wanted a ride in something warm. LOL
Thanks! And yes, I can't really blame the spider for finding a warm dark place to hide.
Your quilt turned out great.
Thanks!
I'm going to the Houston Quilt show this weekend. Will be interesting to see if any of these are in that show.
How exciting! I hope you have a great time at the show!
The butterflies were beautiful. We may have to grow older, but we do not have to grow up!
Exactly!
Thank you for sharing this incredible display of quilts. I can not pick a favorite because they are all of them: STUNNING What a lovely group of talented artists!!🥰
Aren't they great?
I've linked it to show my family overseas - thanks Kaspar!
Hope they're proud of your quilts!
Beautiful quilts so many to choose from
There were so many amazing quilts!
Thank you for sharing. The Mainland has some wonderfully different ideas for quilts. I have a friend moving to Christchurch soon and would love to connect her with the crafting scene in the city. Do you have any recommendations for guilds or groups? Making friends when you are older can be really difficult and I would love to be able to ease her transition.
I'm a member of two groups, Canterbury Patchwork and Quilting Guild, and Christchurch Quilters. If you Google them you'll find details of when and where they meet. Both are really friendly, so I suggest your friend come along and try them both and see which she likes best. She'd be welcome to come to a few meetings as a visitor before she decides which to join.
Stunning quilts
There were so many great quilts in the show!
How lovely
Thanks! I had fun making that one
Looks very good in warm colours
Thanks! I was proud of my colour scheme - a bit outside my usual colour choices :-)
Lots of beautiful quilts.
And there were so many more great quilts I didn't manage to include - it was a great show.
So beautiful!
I was feeling so inspired by all the quilts!
Those birds are beautiful!
I loved the birds too
Lovely quilts …
Aren't they? I'm always so impressed by everyone's work
♥♥♥♥♥
Beautiful!🥰🥰
The quilts are so good, aren't they?
So many lovely quilts. Thank you for showing us.
There were so many more wonderful quilts I didn't get a chance to film - it was a great show!
Thank you for taking us to the show
You're welcome! I love sharing the talented quilters we have here in Christchurch.
What a cool place!❤
It is such an amazing place!
Your color palette is great for the ultimate finish.
Thanks! It's a bit outside my usual palette, so I was really pleased it worked.
Beautiful!
Thanks!
This was were my great great great grandfather died and my family are survivors of this
Wow, that's such an amazing connection to Aotearoa's history!
Beautiful!!
Thanks!
That turned out beautiful. What a great idea using those little coffee cups as corner stones. Thanks for all the work you put into this project, it was so much fun. Have a wonderful week!
Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! The teacup fabric was a wonderful find :-)
Hi Future! I love your use of the teacups as corner stones. Your choice of colors is super, too. ☕ Thanks! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜 (I look forward to your next collaboration.... 🙂 )
Thanks! I was so pleased when I found that teacup fabric - it's just perfect for the theme!
Love the colours!
Thanks! I had a few moments when I was making the blocks when I wasn't sure how the colours would work, but I'm really pleased how it came together
❤❤❤
Thanks!
Wow! It looks beautiful! And we won't tell anyone about the new purchases!!! The tea cups are fabulous. And how does the wind always know when we want to film a quilt??? A mystery of the universe, I think. It has been such a pleasure to work with you and get to know you, even if we are on other sides of the world. Thanks for all your inspiration and friendship FutureCat! 💖🐈
Thanks for keeping my secret 😉 I've enjoyed this collaboration so much, and getting to know you - I really hope we can do it again (but not straight away - I'm exhausted!)
Your quilt turned fantastic my friend! I love it. The purple sashing makes it I think.
Thanks! At first I was disappointed I couldn't find any more of the blue, but I think the purple ended up looking so much better.
Thank you for doing this!🥰
Thanks!
