Sierra Railroad #28 Motherlode Cannonball 1978
This is an analog cassette recording of the
Sierra Railroad's Mother Lode Cannonball.
Headed by Sierra #28, from Jamestown to Fassler.
Pulling 3 heavyweight passenger cars, and 2 open gondolas.
Recorded by myself in 1978, age 9 years old.
The eastbound (uphill) portion is almost entirely in real time,
starting just below Campo Seco Rd. Crossing.
The downhill portion has been compressed
to mostly grade crossings, since it's mostly coasting.
Where possible, I have identified the grade crossings,
according to memory, and google maps.
Of course there were fewer grade crossings in 1978
than there are at this time, since there were no
shopping centers yet built on the hwy 108 corridor.

Shay day Photographers special on the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Rail Road.

In October of 2018, the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Rail Road sponsored a special double header with both surviving West Side Lumber Co. Shays, #10 and #15. First a round trip behind the #15, then again behind the #10 with photo runby's, then double heading back up the hill. #10 and #15 both worked together on the West Side Lumber Co, out of Tuolumne CA until the railroads closing in 1960. # 1...
Sierra Railway Shay #2 special charter to Sonora. January 2001

The Sierra Nevada Logging Museum chartered Shay #2 and 4 coaches to run from The Junctions in Sonora, down to Jamestown and back. I followed the #2 and her consist from Jamestown up to Sonora, then rode the train with everyone else. Train was sold out, and had 4 completely full cars! It was certainly a risk to try this in January, but luckily it was a beautiful day. The #2 developed some sort o...
Sierra Railway #3 runs special to Sonora first time in 20 years!

Sierra Railway #3 runs light up to the former Sonora depot location. There she coupled onto the Holiday train, and was on display for 3 hours. This was a special event, held as a thank you to the community for rallying to help save Railtown 1897 when it was threatened with closure earlier this year. This was the first trip to Sonora the #3 has made since 1992, when it ran special with the #28.

Sierra Railway shay #2 running extra trains on July 3rd 2010. I figured since #3 was getting all the limelight, may as well give the 2 spot a little love. I like they way they ran the engine at the tail running down hill to save time with no runaround needed, like they did when the #2 ran up to Sonora and back for a special charter in 2005. (I have some video of that as well I may post)
Sierra Railway #3 returns to service July 3, 2010

Short excerpt of Sierra Railway #3 on her first revenue run after being completely rebuilt, July 3, 2010. Sierra fans will notice her whistle was not quite right, either getting too much or too little steam when wide open, sound like it was drowning. Sorry about the copyright, I just don't want anyone using my footage without permission.

If love Shay's & Geared Loco's, if you ever get out East, visit the Cass Scenic Railway in West Virginia as they have about 5-6 operational ones including a 3-Truck Climax and a 3-Truck Heisler and Western Maryland #6, the heaviest Shay ever built. I think there is a place in Pennsylvania that also has 1 operational shay but the name of it slips my mind.

Feather River RR No. 2 is a three-truck Shay built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1922 for the Hutchinson Lumber Co., in Oroville, CA. It was used to haul Logs trains for the Feather River railroad. When the Feather River dieselised, #2, along with two other Shays, #1 & #3, became standby power. In 1964, the Pacific Railroad Association chartered the #2 & #3 for a final railfan excursion down the eighteen mile line from the Feather Falls mill to the Western Pacific mainline and then back up the 5½% grade to the mill. The railway was abandoned in 1967 after flooding of a portion of its line by Oroville Dam, and #2 was donated to the State of California. In 1976, it moved to Railtown, where it continues to operate hauling excursions. She is not currently operational, and is not currently under restoration. They have just finished the major overhaul of #28, and it's possible in the future they can turn their focus to getting #2 operational again... but it takes time, and a lot of money.

I already knew 28 returned to service this past week pulling trines on Easter with Sierra 3 but I was just asking and I think if they plan on restoring that shay to operation I think we should give them a little break from rebuilding and restoring steam locomotives to service I mean they’ve been working on 28 since 2013 so I think they deserve a bit of a break from restoring their steam locomotives don’t you agree?

Listen to that 5 chime whistle on 28, sounds epic and haunting. The ghost train returns to haunt the rails on Halloween night in October. Could be used for a Halloween Haunted Ghost Train event, like this! And every year on the date of the accident, it runs again as a warning to others. Plunging into the gap, shrieking like a lost soul.
