Best equipment for watercolour en plein air
My mother owned a professional frame shop and I've saved her large mat cutter, but that small little map cutter in really space saving. Tip to preserve the artwork... The painting (or a costly print) ought not to be in contact with acidic materials it ages the paper beige and can make it brittle. Acid free everything cost more, so at a minimum use acid-free mounting tape AND a piece of acid-free watercolor paper between the painting and the stiff backing. (That brown board backing is loaded with acid and will most quickly damage your art.
Thank you for that excellent information, most appreciated. We all continue to learn with an open mind!
Hello Frank. Thanks for your demos very much. I'm afraid there's something wrong with your camera, the vision is not clear.
Just checked this movie, doesn't look that bad, in focus and clear, so not sure what the issue is?
Great video, thank you
Perfect tutorial! You should add a link to the cutter you used :)
Lovely photo and painting. Thank you for posting the video and narrative. Very helpful to hear your thoughts and to see your brush strokes.
It’s a pleasure. Thank you.
Just had a go at this scene. Fairly new to watercolour and trying to paint a bit more loosely. It wasn’t perfect and definitely overdid the blue on the main mountain, but quite pleased with the overall result. Thank you for the inspiration. ❤️
Hi Mary, well done for giving it a go!
Just love winter season and only two colors fantastic.
Absolutely gorgeous👌👌👌
Your choice of using cerulean blue really brings out the cold atmosphere of the painting. I will be definitely having a goa t this painting over Christmas. Thanks for sharing it with us
Cerulean is a fascinating blue, good luck with the painting.
Thank you 😀
A pleasure.
wonderful...v inspiring :)
Hi Thanks for share your art.Good Job.✨🍀👾🛸
I've been trying to start up again after too long, vut have been taking many photos: I can't thank you enough for this beautiful practical video. It's a gorgeous scene.
Thanks for posting this video demonstration of how to paint a snow scene. It was helpful to see how you approached the scene and to see the outcome.
You didnt need the posts they distract
Think that's a matter of choice.
I used to try to work out 'logically' where the shadows 'should' go in large snowy areas (such as a field or lawn covered with snow) until I realised that they can go almost anywhere. It's the shadows that give the snow it's actual form a lot of times otherwise it's just a plain white area
A really helpful tutorial . I have struggled with shadows and this makes it very clear and a simple approach. Thank you
Appreciate your kind comment.
Beautiful ❤n great 👍
Hi Frank, new subscriber here. I rarely subscribe or comment, but I really like your style of painting and teaching. Can you please do a demo/lesson of your palette, color choices and swatches, and how you do your color wheel in a future episode? Thank you!
Waw luar biasa perpective yang sangat bagus
The planning part is often the difficult bit for me. Great painting Frank. Thanks for Sharing it with us
Thanks Colin, the planning is important, and not always easy, but vital for success.
Looks very much like the painting Turner did in Venice . Very nice
I usually paint in oils but after learning I’m terminal ill I’ve decided to attempt watercolours as hopefully I can knock them out quicker ( I’ve not lost my sense of humour 😂). Just want to say I love your videos and they are just what I need to get me motivated and learn techniques so hopefully my first attempt won’t be too bad , or messy! Keep up the good work 😃
Sorry to hear about your health issues, good luck to you. Thank you for your kind words. I started in oil many years ago, but watercolour is cleaner, portable and nimble,. but difficult to master as you have to retain the light from the start. Go for it.
@Frankwatercolours I love oils as I’m a control freak so was always reluctant to try watercolours but now I see the beauty of them as you’ve just mentioned. Going to start small by filling up the moleskin watercolour book I’ve had collecting dust for a few years first, I’m determined to master it, lol. Enjoy your weekend, even though it’s probably going to be a wet one here in uk, many thanks. 😃
Lovely painting thanks Frank. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺.
Thanks Michael, bet it's warmer where you are!
What kind of tape are you using on the painting on the back of the matt? I wish we could see the answers!
Good quality masking tape. Rub it down properly and it won’t lift.
Very instructive to dee how you brought the scene to life. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your expertise...particularly as it relates to the light underdrawing with paint vs pencil. Thanks for the tip son how to build the scene including your choices of colors.
That really makes the sunlight pop.
Yes, it's one of the big secrets to successful watercolour painting.
Wow
Hi Frank, the shadows really bring it to life and help create that '3d effect'. Thanks for sharing it with us
Thanks Colin
"It's nice and fresh, it's clean it's not overworked", you say. That's exactly what I was thinking at that point 🙂
👌
WOW that mat cutter is £57 with delivery!!!
Is that good or bad?
@@Frankwatercolours Bad.... 😞That is so expensive...for me anyway.
@@101curlywurly The Logan cutters are pretty much the best. You can find cheaper alternatives but my advice would be to get the Logan.
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So... What was the biggest secret? Oh I see, it is a secret!🙊
Love color..so yummy.
Thank you 😋
Exelent,for image in vers short time-profesional,beautifoul ❤
They are a nice way to mount a picture with the 45° cutter. Can be a little expensive for the cutters though!!! but the professional finish you get looks amazing!
Such a very beautiful painting! I loved it when you said something about people not wanting to see dabs of paint but lines. I'm a raw beginner, and I seem to watch a lot of tutorials by (talented) dabbers, but when I try to do it, it looks like exactly what it is: blobs of paint. Maybe I should try the harder work of lines! Anyway, I really enjoyed watching you create magic ... thanks!
It's been a pleasure to follow your demo, I love it a lot! and your explanation! May I ask, as a beginner in watercolour painting, why right after the lightest lights you put the darkest darks? Isn't the value study principle saying that you have to make firs the lightest lights, then the middle values and as last thing and details the darkest darks? Thank you.
You are correct, in watercolour you always start with a light wash, (the local colours), let it dry, then come the mid tones and the drawing with the brush which sometimes gets very dark, as with my demo. Finally come the dark accents, the dark shadow wash for instance. Maybe come on my zoom, free for first timers.
@@Frankwatercoloursthank you, I will!
Beautiful and a painting I could look at the rest of my life and not get bored with. It doesn't look like the photo, but it's better, more lively, more interesting, and more exciting.
Nice!
Lovely process, thanks for the video. I'm for Montenegro next week, I'll be using some of your tips 👌
Lovely! Going to try this!
Thank you for this simple tutorial
If you lived in the countryside, a beautiful place growing up, know the place through every season, try painting it from memory? That’s what some of his work looks like to me. Mind’s eye pictures capturing beautiful flashes of memories & toying with technique.
That’s a very interesting concept, makes complete sense, thank you.
I had to laugh when you said it needed a bit of cloud, it's Scotland! My neighbours went to Skye last year for two weeks and didn't see a single mountain the whole time because the cloud and rain obliterated the views! Such a beautiful island if you get the right weather. Great painting Frank, I knew immediately where it was - and I learned a lot from watching and listening, thanks for sharing your knowledge. ❤ from Scotland 🏴 🏴 🇬🇧
I love Scotland, when you see the dramatic vistas for the first time, it blows your mind! But the weather is the risk and reward. Thank you for your positive comments.
“Don’t be the slave of what you see, be the master of what you want.” Such wise advice! Thanks! …and gorgeous painting as well!
Thank you.
Great piece of art! I’m brand new at watercolours and being given information about blue/cool receding and warm coming forward is invaluable! Thanks!
Welcome! Thank you.
