Q&A 20 November 2024
00:39 Q1 Dear Ajahn, I dreamt that I invited Luang Por Chah to my house to give a Dhamma talk, and he really came with one of his disciple. My brother and I were overjoyed when we received him at the door. My brother wanted to do a chant upon receiving him, but Luang Por said is was not necessary and he stepped into the house. When we all stepped into the house the place became a big hall filled with many people waiting for LP Chah to go on stage to give the Dhamma talk. This is the only scene I could remember after I woke up. I never met Luang Por Chah before and have only seen his picture on the internet and in books. Can Ajahn interpret this dream for me please?

Questions précised 00:11 Q1 You mentioned that the utterance of the phrase “the unborn, unoriginated…” was the strong intuition of the Bodhisatta before he was enlightened. Why do you say that? 02:20 Q2 I heard Tan Ajahn Anan say we should try to chant the Itipiso 84,000 times. What Is the significance? Can it lead to liberation? 04:35 Q3 What are the key karmic aspects that led we women to be ...

00:33 1) Dear Ajahn, many thanks for all the help you have given me and others. I just wondered if you knew what the differences are between one who is liberated through concentration, one liberated through insight and one liberated both ways? 10:27 2) Dear Ajahn. You have talked a bit about the rebirth process. Is it up to the mind which next birth it wants to take? I thought it was up to karm...

00:23 Q1. Dear Ajahn, may I please ask this potentially selfish question? I have experienced a lot of suffering in my life, and when we dedicate merit to others, I feel that I actually need the merit myself, to alleviate my own suffering. (In general, I feel I have been too generous to others in my life, and now I question whether that was the right thing to do). How does the dedication of meri...

00:04 Q1: Dear Ajahn! Thanks for taking my question. Are you able to offer some advice to someone (both practical and spiritual) who has the intention to go forth but is unable to do so for a few years due to family obligations? 05;01 Q2: Hi Ajahn Achalo, I realised that I can focus more while doing metta meditation. If that's the case, may I check if I should focus on doing metta meditation in...

Thank you Ajahn, here I was thinking "...might be more than this lifetime... could be a bit of a hike... best keep a steady pace" You've reminded me of the good fortune I've had in finding the Dhamma in Australia.

@ 9:47 I've heard this statement about an unbroken line of arahants dating back to the Buddha from several talks, but I haven't come across any veritable studies of such. The Buddha states that knowing "there are contemplatives & brahmans who, faring rightly & practicing rightly, proclaim this world & the next after having directly known & realized it for themselves" as being a component of Right View. The existence of an unbroken line of arahants would lend much credence to this; If you have any sources or talks you could recommend about it I'd be very interested. Thank you Ajahn. From MN 117: "And what is right view? Right view, I tell you, is of two sorts: There is right view with effluents, siding with merit, resulting in acquisitions [of becoming]; there is right view that is noble, without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path. "And what is the right view with effluents, siding with merit, resulting in acquisitions? 'There is what is given, what is offered, what is sacrificed. There are fruits & results of good & bad actions. There is this world & the next world. There is mother & father. There are spontaneously reborn beings; there are contemplatives & brahmans who, faring rightly & practicing rightly, proclaim this world & the next after having directly known & realized it for themselves.' This is the right view with effluents, siding with merit, resulting in acquisitions. "And what is the right view that is noble, without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path? The discernment, the faculty of discernment, the strength of discernment, analysis of qualities as a factor for awakening, the path factor of right view in one developing the noble path whose mind is noble, whose mind is without effluents, who is fully possessed of the noble path. This is the right view that is noble, without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path. "One makes an effort for the abandoning of wrong view & for entering into right view: This is one's right effort. One is mindful to abandon wrong view & to enter & remain in right view: This is one's right mindfulness. Thus these three qualities - right view, right effort, & right mindfulness - run & circle around right view."

I only let my kid watch TV on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday, no smart phone until 16. I don't care what others might think of us or how much she might protest, that's the rule.

🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I appreciate your willingness to talk about every subject. Your answers have been so helpful in my practice, and in particular in making clear, appropriate aspirations that will ultimately bring me to full liberation from suffering. Thank you for even answering those questions that can bring criticism 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu Luang Por Achalo. I appreciate the sensitive manner in which you handled that query on gender - very inspiring to me as a woman. Notably, Ksitigharba Bodhisattva began his/her path as a Brahmin woman who wanted to save her mother from hell. Great question, great answer. 🪷
Coming from the Goenka tradition, it's sometimes tricky to allow oneself to open up to the joy of piti and suka. It all comes when it comes I guess .. ✌️🪷

If the kid wants a cell phone they should work to pay for the bill themselves. That responsibility will truncate much of the hedonism. That's what I wish my parents had done with me and my early Internet access.
