I'm getting totally overwhelmed and frustrated with trying to decide what shingles to use to reroof my SW Florida home that just survived 3 hurricanes this year. My current roof is 23 years old with GAF Timberline T30 slate color. Most all the granules are gone and we have some leaks. The roofer I want to use says he can use a similar slate color in either Certainteed Landmark or GAF Timberline HDZ. However, his business got flooded in the hurricane and he had to throw out all his shingle board samples, so he just emailed us brochure pictures. He is also extremely busy right now repairing hurricane damaged roofs, so I can only text him and wait for replies. We went to Lowes & Home Depot to see actual shingles, but all they have is GAF HDZ and I was very disappointed in the slate color appearance and shingle quality. They look like tarnished copper green paint was sprayed all over the bottom half of the shingles. And when I gently pulled a few shingles out and looked at them, a lot of granules fell off... A Lot! Is that normal? The pictures of Certainteed Landmark colonial slate color looks more appealing, but I can't actually see and touch a real sample. This is a huge expense for me on a fixed retirement income and at 66 years old, I want the shingles to last for my lifetime. How am I supposed to choose the best one?

For box vents, are the slant back design that you show better than the mushroom type, and why?

Can you add box vents or whirly vents to a ridge vent? I have a hip roof and want to vent the north side of the house that has no access to the ridge.

Kudos for your awesome review. I purchased a set of the CZU Security latches and installed them on my daughter’s front and back doors. Somebody tried to kick in her door last Saturday morning and they couldn’t get through it because of this device. The frame where the deadbolt and the door latch was completely split, but the intruder could not get through the CZU. I hate that I had to have a real world test of the device. But, my daughter is still safe because it didn’t fail.

DO THIS!!! I built a custom home in North Texas. Did all the research and have 2x6" exterior walls, Zip System sheathing, Full brick (air gap), Open cell foam insulation, with a semi-conditioned attic. My walls are R20 and roof is R25. After 18 months, my biggest electrical bill was $155 for a 2300 sq.ft house in Aug, 2023 with high temps of 108-110 outside. The highest elec usage I had was 936kwh. The lowest was 210kwh with a $22.79 elec bill.

The door clips that you pointed out, are not made of Steel, they are made of Zinc...How is it possible that zinc out performed Aluminum. I thought aluminum was stronger than ZINC!!! I agree Stainless steel door clips would be optimal - wondering if the profile is enough tho, considering the door cavitation/warping. maybe that is why the Zinc ones indeed faired better. Superb Video...Much Gratitude for your hard research. Any info on Steel door tested would be greatly appreciated. Also Multiple Clips an option, Door Armor Max, on guard bottom braces, kick stand door braces - if you attach to floor with Bivy pins and attach to handle - Stainless Steel reinforcement Blocks for Grade A/1 Lockset. Multiple throws on Door. Many of these claim by themselves to hold back 1500-3000lbs of force...if stacked or multiplied...it would seem that would be the best solution. Also 2x4 wood? What about 2x4 tube steel? just some ideas...and comments...Awesome Awesome video!

If you get the 1.5 inch R-7 insulation board from menards, how does the affect your siding being pushed 1.5 inches out from your house? Specifically around your windows? Won't they not be flush anymore?

I'm concerned about my blades being bent as well as balanced.

Can I put decorative mouldings and trims on that? Never seen ones that looks a bit more fancier than straight window mouldings.

What's the best siding for a Lakehouse that has animals chewing on it? I have old cedar needs replacing squirrels and racoons have no problem getting in.

Ever tried to hammer a nail into a bouncing board? Reinforce the top of that door frame you built for testing, it's deflecting way too much

You can see the whole test door and frame you made moving and bouncing a few inches with each hit. That movement is absorbing most of the energy instead of stressing the locks

I hate to burst your bubble, but you can shim through the weatherproofing and lift the 2 x 4 off of the brackets

I’m in NW Wisconsin and when I resided my house and detached garage we put 1/2" polystyrene that has a R value of 3, that has to help my 2x4 walls built in 1978 and the best thing about adding insulation to the exterior is that is covers the studs too and they ain’t crap for insulating a wall. I’m building another garage soon, I’m not sure if I’ll heat it or not but I suppose I’ll insulate the exterior walls on it too. Up here we often put 2" polystyrene insulation under the cement slab for garages to help prevent deep frost under them and prevent the cement from breaking and heaving, especially if you have clay in the soil. Edit: Menards now sells 1.5" Foamular R-7.5 insulation boards for $38 a sheet but you can get a 11% in-store rebate on it often.

I need to add shingle over edge vents , ( no eve to add soffit vents) 4 sections 7feet 6 inch across 16 feet wall to ridge...can i use a whirlly bird for each of the 4 sections....house 50 yrs old vaulted ceiling no trusses ....dropping ceiling inside 8 inches adding 6 inches of rock wool insulation w 2 inch air gap

Relax... tyvec has one purpose only: be a moisture barrier to insure against moisture drive or cladding failure. It wasn't made for anything else What I like to see for an exterior wall is: studs-sheathing-tyvec-xps-drainage mat-brick [siding comes in second, and only if house build demands it]. And yes, cable or telco types are a menace to all your work. Set a box as suggested, or enter using an eave - drilling holes in siding a foot off grade is brain damage and... I've seen it way too often.
