I've never been this scared while flying an airplane. In this video, we are flying to Alaska in our Cessna 172. This was one of the greatest adventures I've ever been a part of. Flying in a small aircraft definitely poses it's challenges, and in this video, we got a small taste of spatial disorientation, and it scared both of us!

C-130J Super Hercules - REAL Mission Footage - Air Drop - Dirt LZ Ops
Out of 14 years jumping, I only had one malfunction. Ste. Mere Eglise DZ on Ft. BRAGG (NOT LIBERTY). Had an inverted canopy on an MC1-1B. Had to steer it backwards. Not so easy, and I landed in a huge thorn bush. LOL
Wow!
When in doubt....put the laundry out !!!!
😂
Yea, 1000 ft is close to the ground. It's just a little over 3 football fields so I never waited to look up for my chute like they train you to do when exiting the plane. As soon as I was out the door my eyes were looking for my chute. At Bragg back in 76 I had a "zero" deployment of the main chute on a low altitude hop and nothing but a lump was on the end of my lines. Immediately I pulled the handle on my reserve. I remember vividly that little pilot chute that deploys to grab air and pull the reserve chute out, it literally popped when it opened. I was falling fast. The reserve streamed out of the pack across my belly, pulled by the pilot chute, and within a few more seconds it popped opened also. I didn't have to grab and throw it like we were trained if it was not coming out quick enough. At that moment I looked down and I was maybe 100 feet from the ground. I only had time to grab lines and tuck before I hit. I impacted on the side of little hill and tried to execute the hit and roll the way we had been trained. I honestly did not feel like the impact was any harder than normal. But the colonel who came running over to me said I had come in really fast but was amazed at how well I had performed the landing. He shouted, "soldier that was a perfect landing". Together we gathered my chutes and examined the lump of my main chute which we found had been tied to prevent it from deploying. Next we checked the packing tag of who had packed my chute and it said Donald Duck had been the packer. I know that they locked down the Packers and went through every parachute that had been packed. I read that they found four more chutes that were tied up. As far as I know they never found the packer who had tried to kill me and four other soldiers unlucky enough to have picked one of his chutes.
Holy shit!
I think that's why packers are sometimes randomly picked to grab a chute and jump. At least that's what I heard one time.
That story is literally insane!
Yeah. I’ve actually heard that
Airborne also is a joke today! Saw this tiny little girl at Wal-Mart last week in a man's camo uniform and noticed it had the airborne patch on it. I almost went to her to tell her that she is not a paratrooper just because she was allowed to jump from a plane but I did not want to waste my valuable time.
Trained to not die on a drop? Static Lines can work the "Magic" and reserve is there? Balls save my sorry ass now?
“I don't understand it, so it must be a conspiracy.”
😆 isn’t that how they all get started?
Looks like a classic “Mae West”. Soft landing, thank goodness “
Lol
It's not a Mad West which is when a riser crosses the canopy. He should have got rid of his main chute before he pulled reserve. But then he didn't have much time.
gtfo, all he do was bicycle kick. There was no near death T11 canopy is massive he would have been fine. He also doesn't have combat gear so at worst little soar from a hard landing. This jumper needs some retraining
Why does the Army use the obsolete and dangerous T=10??? I got my wings on April, 1984. I used the T10 3 times and the MC1-B twice. Every jump had lots of injured soldiers but that was all we had. Look up the video titled "Career Ending Jump" on You Tube.
I believe this is actually a T-11. It’s basically a newer version of the T-10
I was part of doing test jumps at FT bragg for the T11 in around 09 and I prefer T10-D over T11. Problem I had with T11 along with its canopy being to big, is that has a riser separator. So when you land its a lot harder to pop your canopy releases and you have to do both of them. If there is wind it makes it even harder to do and not get dragged across the drop zone from your canopy reinflating. We had several injuries during testing, including my battle buddy that got dragged 100m fucking up his face
@@TheActright Interesting. Why did the Army drop the -1B parachute?? I got my cherry jump out of a Huey with a -1B and enjoyed the experience. Jumping out of a Huey or any helicopter, you get a very good sensation of free fall and the opening of your chute is much gentler than doing a C-130 or cargo jet. I am no expert by any means as I only have 6 jumps but I will make some observations: At Ft. Benning I saw a lot of guys get hurt because of a poor PLF, they either had their legs spread apart or they were riding the wind. The T10 can be safe when you do your PLF correctly but it is a leg-breaker if you watch the ground coming up. I saw one guy who did not turn into the wind before he landed and when he hit the ground he bounced a couple of times. Luckily, he was not hurt. The -1B was easily the best for me because I watched the smoke and as I landed, I turned into the wind for a softer landing. But if you have a sky full of troopers I can see that some could collide with each other. No, I never went skydiving, I'm too cheap to take up an expensive hobby, even though the desire is there. My last jump was supposed to be a night jump. We were lined up in sticks as the fog started rolling in. The first couple of rotations went well. But as the fog got thicker, the visibility dropped and the night got very dark as there was no moon. The two Hueys would go up and then return as the ambulances went out to collect the casualties. I was getting very concerned. To say it was a low visibility is an understatement. Then it was my turn for adventure and as we were walking to the Huey, they shut down the engines. I was relieved. We resumed the next morning. It was a beautiful fall day, the temperature was about 55*, with a clear blue sky. We went up about 1200 ft for a Hollywood jump. The jump master pointed at me, I slipped over the skids, I had a very good sensation of freefall before the chute opened. I did everything right and barely felt the landing. I bet I am one of a very small minority of paratroopers who never made a night jump. Also, I didn't do the tower. The wind was too high and as I was getting attached, the jumpmaster stopped the exercise. Only half of us did the tower. At Benning the weather was too bad so we made 2 in one day, then for graduation day, it was with equipment. My wife with our 4-week-old daughter and 3-year-old daughter pinned my wings on. It was a good day.
@@TheActright I have spent the last hour reading about the different parachutes. And one item is clear: poor technique with any system results in injuries or death. I don't understand the complacent attitude some troopers have with their parachutes. With so much at risk, why is it so hard to make people use the proper form? On just the few jumps I made and the other ones on the ground as a spectator, I saw a lot of guys that had poor form in their landings. I think about 25% had their legs open, or did not know which way the wind was blowing or reaching for the ground before landing. I paid attention and made sure I was in proper form as I landed because I had a wife and 2 children I had to support. And yes, there are lots of injuries that result because of conditions beyond the control of the jumper.
here is the video I was referencing: ruclips.net/video/XOsGnaeT03k/видео.html complete with screams!!! He landed in a ditch. There's not much you can do in that situation. He experienced every jumper nightmare. A career-ending injury, losing a leg, with years of pain that was not his fault.
Looked like a shroud line crossed his main canopy, keeping it from fully filling. Once his reserve came out, he was falling at the same rate the others were, one of the things you look for when you jump. I suppose two partially filled chutes are as good as one fully filled.
Here before you get famous :)
Lol I’ll remember this day
I figured you’d post a video of this when I heard where you went.
@@R3dTig3r10 I almost didn’t film it because these are so much work to edit, but my wife convinced me to do so
Bro you're so underrated. Great content, and editing style, so no reason you shouldn't be bigger!
Thank you so much! Hopefully this channel can really start gaining traction soon. Especially after I launch my new videos I’ll be working on in the next few months
Was this on Saturday, or Sunday of the airshow?
Saturday
Awesome! Love it!
Artic warfare black hawk ik the tropics wtf
wow some people have a fun life.
I have to admit, it’s pretty awesome
Great adventure. I'm in Anchorage now, but grew up in BC. Fwiw, the lake is pronounced Kloo-ON-ee. Gorgeous area. Also, obviously you already know this, but for others watching you can't just cross the border into Canada and declare weapons. You need to have a valid reason to have them (transporting from lower 48 to AK is valid), and they have to be registered ahead of time.
Super cool! Thanks for the comment! I’ll remember that the next time I fly up!
Chocolate Hills, Phillipines?
Yes!
Incredible landscape!!!
Thanks! More to come!
You guys missed me! I fly out of KGTF
That’s unfortunate! We were planning on landing there, but customs closed too early. We ended up doing something sketchy instead lol. MTF
@AdventureMen well if you are ever in the area again, let me know. I'd be happy to buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain on flying. I think I've watched every video on Free Pilot Training while working on my PPL.
What a great adventure! I spend several days a month working in prison so the jokes are appreciated!! LOL
Thanks! 😂 gotta give my brother in law a hard time
‘Merica! Good video guys. Thanks for another adventure
Thanks!
Too cool. Thanks from a former resident of Fairbanks and Anchorage! You guys are a blast! 😅 But I think that the repeated "prison" references were getting old fast and eroded some of the fun.
Thanks Nathan! I really appreciate the feedback too. Always on the lookout to improve
y'all having quite the adventure! loving this series. I'd love to do a trip like this when I get more flying experience
Thanks! Yes we are! Keep an eye out. We flew the plane down to Montana and I’m working on a new series!
@@AdventureMen amazing. I eill ne loooing for it If you make it to the DFW area one day , let me know:)

I miss flying in AK .
It’s an amazing place to fly!
The cloud bases were 8,255! ( at Watson Creek) Remember METAR numbers are AGL. You have to add 6,000’ to 2,255 (airport elevation. My wife said my previous comment was to wordy
Yeah, I realized that shortly after the flight. The funny thing is that I knew that, but I’m so used to low elevation airports, that I completely spaced
It happens. Just glad you guys didn’t auger in after leaving Watson Lake at night.
I assume, at some point, you remembered that the ceiling reported ( in this case from METAR) was 5500’ or at one point you said 6,000’…AND that altitude must be added to the the airport elevation (2255’ above MSL) to give the base of the clouds 7,755 to 8,255’. So your plan to “ climb up to 8,500” had little or no chance of working and putting you guys above the cloud layer. Your comment that “ these ceilings are significantly higher than what they were calling… there definitely over 6”, Is telling.
The ghost can as a target is the best part!

Good call on that Watson Lake RON!
I’m glad we did! It wasn’t the most comfortable sleep, but we’re alive! 😆
Alaska "you can't shoot the same day you fly because that's cheating!" Texas "Wanna fly around in a helicopter and see how many pigs we can kill?"
😂 very true
I have the same green Alaska hat, my uncle got it for me when he visited his brother in Seward. Still need to get there myself.
That’s awesome! Seward is cool
I think America should build two giant walls on the north and south border as mega projects just to show that we can do it. not fences but walls so big you can see them from space. Make them both bigger than the great wall of commies.
😆
Im so glad free pilot training pointed me this way, this is now my favorite channel!
😆 Awesome! Glad to have you over here too!
Giant jar of gold.... Is it food grade?
Lol. Guess you could say that
I didn't realize this was the same guy that's I've been watching to help me learn the ground course stuff, that's pretty cool. Im so used to the lesson format and not seeing him I wouldn't have known it was the same dude if he didn't tell me lol. I love that he continues to educate while doing this as well, great stuff. My favorite things to watch online are guns, planes and alaska so this is right up my alley.
Awesome! I’ve been wondering if I should include more shooting videos. I love to shoot, but not sure how the combo would work out
Nebraska is super windy so is Kansas, I lived in the sand Hills for a decade and I remember it well.
Yes it is! Just like Oklahoma!
Its allllways busy at paaq. With blue river and fly around theres a TON of students in that aerodome
Agreed. I suspect that it will be a towered airport soon. They were actually operating a temporary tower the other day. I think they were testing the waters. Maybe you know more?
@AdventureMen I've never seen them operate as a tower, it's always been "Palmer radio" on 1st call and the Flight service will give you aerodrome info, current aircraft in the vicinity, weather and advisories and then any future calls are "palmer traffic" like you would at a regular non towered airport. Sometimes they will sequence you if it's really busy, like ask for a right 360 or something. Talkeetna is the same way if you ever make the short trip north.
Good real world stuff. At 400 hrs, instrument rated with a 182, living in Idaho, I have made the decision that when I fly at night I want to be within glide distance to a road. I realized that after flying over mountains in the dark with almost no moonlight and wondering what would I do if I needed to make a forced landing.
I can’t even imagine a forced landing in that situation. I’ve heard that it’s best to fly as slow as possible and just keep the lights off.
The only other way, if not wireless, would be directional drilling lines in. It's become pretty common in the last 5 years for underground services. Got me thinking...
True, but that’s not nearly as fun 😏
It’s NEVER a kick to the pride to ask for clarification. Also, Interesting about your wind discussion. Pulled up Windy for the region and seems quite common that there’s a HUGE difference between surface winds and altitude.
Very true! I just wish I was more familiar with Canadian radio procedures. Yeah, that blew me away too!…literally
Bold move flying at night in a remote area that’s unfamiliar to you! Loving the series!
To be honest, I don’t even like flying at night that much anyway. I’ve just done it so much with the AF, I’ve gotten used to it. 😆 Thanks!
Whoa hey... i've seen this guy before! Can't wait to watch the adventure. Just accidentally stumbled onto it. Your free pilot training was so helpful to me when I was working toward my private cert.
Welcome! Glad to have you over here as well! Let me know what you think! I’m always looking for feedback whether it’s positive or negative.
Yes make a video on crossing the border.
Awesome! I’ll see what I can do
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Awesome 😎😎😎😎😎
Thanks!
Are those alaskan airports non-towered technically, but have someone providing advisories still? Any general tips on Alaskan flying would be appreciated, need to make a visit
Yes, they are non-towered. It’s basically the same as a non-towered airport in the lower 48 unless they have an FSS on the field. In that case you make an initial call to the FSS. In this case: “Palmer Radio”. Once you tell them where you are, they will give you advisories on the traffic in the area.
4:16 6:30 that view looks like a sim. 10:40 those snowy mountains are fantastic! I loved those alluvial rivers and seeing the pipeline too. Not sure you'd do it again?
It’s definitely some amazing scenery! Funny thing, I’m already making plans to do it 2 more times. Once going down, then once back up! Lol Hopefully in a Kodiak! 🤞
