AgTech Innovation Hub: Improving Biopesticides with a New Protein
Просмотров 538 месяцев назад
Biopesticides exist in the market today, but using them can be tricky for producers. Researchers in two Ohio State departments are testing a proprietary protein that boosts the effectiveness of biopesticides and biostiumulants when sprayed on plants both in the greenhouse or in the field. Dr. Guo-Liang Wang's project, funded by the Nationwide AgTech Innovation Hub collaboration with CFAES, test...
AgTech Innovation Hub: Protecting Soybeans from Pathogens
Просмотров 328 месяцев назад
Ohio's planting season has gained another month, which could cause major problems for soybean growers. Soybean pathogens, like Soybean Cyst Nematode, can survive a mild winter and cause yield issues. Dr. Alex Lindsay and his CFAES colleagues used funding from the AgTech Innovation Hub to support a multi-part project focused on protecting seed health. They're looking at how soybean seeds respond...
AgTech Innovation Hub: Mapping Climate Risk Perceptions
Просмотров 1038 месяцев назад
Does your state experience hurricanes? Have you lived through drought before? Depending on factors like gender, community, and values, you may perceive climate risk differently. As part of the AgTech Innovation Hub, Dr. Cara Lawson launched a nationwide survey to map perceptions. Understanding those regional differences will help communicators craft targeted messages during natural disasters or...
AgTech Innovation Hub: Harvesting insights from data and drones

Farmers make a lot of decisions during the year-when to plant, when to harvest, when to treat and with what? PhD student Luke Waltz and advisor Dr. Sami Khanal in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Ohio State hope their AgTech Innovation Hub project will provide quality data farmers can use to more accurately identify crop risks. By combining weather, soil, and p...
AgTech Innovation Hub: Automating Agricultural Drainage
Просмотров 1319 месяцев назад
Agricultural drainage helps farmers manage water levels on their farmland. When it rains extensively, farmers can help move that water out of the field. Automating that process helps farmers react more easily and precisely to changing water conditions. Dr. Vinayak Shedekar and Dr. Steve Lyons are testing an automated system with remote access via cellphone and computer to help producers more ef...

Post doc Kim, with the Department of Horticultural and Crop Sciences, is working on a project to determine how AI can help maintain consistent growth in a greenhouse.
Helping ornamental growers with sustainable practices
Просмотров 7511 месяцев назад
Growers use water, energy, and nutrients to grow annuals; inputs that need to be managed properly to help the business stay profitable. So how much does it cost to grow plants in a greenhouse? Grad student Lauren Seltsam wants to help ornamental growers by testing a baseline for inputs when growing plants in a controlled environment greenhouse. Her research looks at the actual cost involved and...

Union County Extension Educator Wayne Dellinger works with brothers Ryan and Greg Lee to develop on-farm trials for speed seeding, fungicide, and seeding rate for the eFields program. Wayne creates the trials making it easy for the Lee brothers to implement using equipment they already own. Ryan and Greg glean valuable data from each trial, informing decisions they make for the next planting se...

Amanda Douridas, Extension educator for Champaign County, is always looking for ways to add an economic value to her trials. She's working with producer Daniel Call on soil health and moisture. While cover crops may add costs and time, the end result - healthier soil - provides even greater value in improved yield. This has been a challenging year due to the flash drought early in the season. A...
Science Happens Here: Regulating plant growth
Просмотров 41Год назад
Which would you pick in a nursery: a six-pack of plants that are all different sizes or a more uniform pack of plants? Horticulture and Crop Science grad student, Ty Rich, tests a new way to apply plant growth regulators that keep your nursery plants looking perfect. Check out his research in our latest Science Happens Here!

A new kind of rubber glove
Просмотров 106Год назад
In our next installment of Some Assembly Required, Dr. Katrina Cornish works with a unique material sourced from the guayule bush, a hardy perennial that grows in deserts, to create medical grade gloves. Hypoallergenic and stronger than latex, guayule gloves could be the solution to a growing crisis: the natural rubber shortage.
Pushing gloves to their limit

Will asian carp ever be come part of the echo system that doesn't damage the native system.?

Hi @maxpower1337, invasive species like the Asian Carp compete for resources with native species like turtles, other fish, raccoons, birds, and muskrats and are an overall threat to biodiversity. If allowed to remain in a waterbody, they could possibly spread to other rivers, lakes, or streams and ruin them for the native species.
