Great advice.
I’ve always wanted chickens ❤🤩
We love having ours and recommend them if you have the space to keep them.
Hi, came across your videos while researching Chickens. Was wondering if you have problems with them attracting rats/mice into the garden? and if so, any ways to avoid/deter them?
Thanks for commenting. We have had both rats and mice unfortunately but it is something that can be solved and managed. They are attracted to the feed both in storage and in the run. I now keep my feed in plastic bins, I’ve found it keeps both the rain and rats/mice out. It also lets me keep the feed near the run making feeding easier. Rats had dug under the run and I could see them running across to the feeder. I ended up digging in fine wire mesh to about 30cm and connected it to my run and that stopped them from getting in. We’ve not had any rats since then. Mice are smaller and can get through the run wire mesh but we have a cat which is proving proficient at keeping the population under control. Since we secured the feed storage, the bottom of the run and have our cat, Jack, we’ve not had any problems.
No resting just because the season is technically over but you’ve had some amazing results 👍, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦
Thanks, I’ve been pleased with my tomatoes and peppers this year despite the slow start. But like you say, no rest, already looking to the next season. Hope you are ok and doing well?
There is always so much to do!
It is an ongoing process! No sooner one task is done, the next is lining up. But it keeps us busy and out of trouble!
Are there laws or rules that you have to watch out for concerning noise, smells and vermin that may upset the neighbours.
There isn’t anything specific for chickens but local nuisance and environmental health rules will apply and people can complain to the council. I don’t have cockerels due to the noise and keep my chickens in a corner of the garden away from my neighbours, keep topping up their wood chip to help reduce the smell, and make sure my neighbours has a steady supply of eggs. I also talked to them before I got chickens to make sure it wasn’t going to be an issue.
Really helpful video. Thanks as I couldn’t figure out the tab bit
Glad it’s been helpful.
Spray the poop area wih lactic acid bacteria solution once a week to get rid of the smell
Never heard of that, I’ll take a look.
Let me know if you in the comments have any questions about chickens or chicken care.
Great video, just bought a house with stables and fields on the back. I want chickens again.
Oh wow, that sounds amazing. Chickens will be a great addition. Low maintenance and a regular supply of great tasting eggs. Are you moving in soon, or have you moved in already?
I found the video very informative. Thanks for sharing this valuable insight.
I'm glad I was able to help.
Let me know if you have any questions about gardening and growing your own food so I can answer them in future videos.
Great to see how things are going. Glad your feeling better!
Thanks, it’s good to be back in the garden and filming again.
Awesome glad your back and able to get outside, Ali 🌤️🇨🇦
Thank you. It’s been frustrating but I’m far more mobile than I was. Hope you are doing ok.
I so very much agree with you. Thank you for your content. This is simply very very valuable & hopeful that chickens do not have to be tortured to death by people who exploit them as egg-machines. This is so very much better. God bless you.
Thank you for your comment. I love being able to see where my eggs come from and happy chickens.
Howdy from Wales! 👋🏽 Born in England but living here. I'm hoping the regulations are more lax in Wales due to focus on farming culture. Thank you for these videos! They're super helpful and informative. Can't wait to have some feathery company, hoping to get Norfolk Greys!
I think some of the regulations will apply in Wales but worth a check. I’m glad the videos are helpful. Have you got your hens yet? Norfolk Greys are lovely birds!
Good content. Just got 5 chickens. What do you provide for the hens to clean themselves?
Hi, hens love a dust bath. It helps keep them clean and prevents mites. Our chickens has a dry patch of ground they use but you can put sand in a tub (large enough for them to get in) for them to use. I use bird sand for my quail which I picked up from a feed store, I expect it would work well for chickens too.
I hope things are going ok with your 5 hens!
Very helpful video. We’re moving to a house with just under an acre and can’t wait to start our chicken journey. 😊
I hope your move goes well and you get settled with some chickens soon!
Thinking of getting 6 chickens.. I’m a terrible over thinker and got myself in a right tizzy! 1)I’m panicking what if they get ill, finding a vet that deals with hens and that cost! Have you found that chickens need a lot of medical assistance? Do I need to really consider that cost? 2) looking at getting a pen like yours..how big is yours and whee did you get it from? And do you find the normal chicken wire is enough to keep things out and keep the girls safe? I work during the day and get home early afternoon so I need to know they are safe in an enclosed pen. 3)once they have destroyed the grass on the pen floor do you just keep the wood chip on it? How often do you change that? 4) are they really that simple to keep? Am I over thinking it all too much? I want to know I can look after them correctly and look after their needs. I have watched all your chicken videos and subscribed to your channel! You have been very helpful just watching you and I love the way your girls just follow you about! Also I noticed in your first chicken video you was racking up autumnal leaves…get a leaf grabber (I got mine from screw fix) and it’s a deal breaker!! I have a huge oak tree in my garden and picking up those leafs every autumn use to be back breaking! Until I bought a leaf grabber! 😂 Thankyou for your time
Hi, I’ve found chickens to be very self sufficient and are not often taken ill. The only illness we have had to treat was coccidiosis in our chicks. A couple of days of antibiotics and they were good. We joined a local small holder training group and have had loads of help and there are a number of vets near us who provide care for poultry. I’ve personally found that, if they get to adulthood and are kept in good conditions, they tend to do well. That’s not to say things could happen but we have a good network of people to give us advice. Other than the antibiotics, we have not had to pay for any vet bills over the last 4 years. I built our coop from old fence panels, so it did not cost too much. The run cost around £200 here’s a link to a similar one (amzn.eu/d/54dipZT) it is not secure, the wire is held on by tie wraps which can become brittle and snap in the sun (I check and replace them regularly) and animals can dig under the bottom, to secure this I would need to dig wire into the ground and connect it to the run. The door is also unsecured, I had a fox pull it open. If I could do it again I would create the run out of a wood frame, a wire base and make the walls and roof out of stronger mesh. After a couple of fox attacks at night we focused on securing the coop which is covered by chicken wire. I can see the foxes have tried to get in but the chicken wire has done its job. Yes, I add wood chips to the run. I tend to do this once a year or if they are still ok, every two years. It helps keep it relatively dry and reduce their smell.
They are easy to keep. For Food, water and security they will give you lots of company and eggs. The biggest issue we have had is security and keeping the foxes out. Thanks for the advice on the leaf grabber, I’ll give it a go this year. Thanks for subscribing. Got a new video in the making and hope to get it out soon.
Thanks - all very useful to know..
Thanks, glad I could help.
❤
I’ve never seen a fox and live in the country they are free range I’ve had them 7 years I’m so confused at why there is no foxes in our area the farmer about a mile away is the same his just roam free never seen a fox 🤞
It is interesting you don’t have foxes, we have quite a lot near us and it’s a constant fight to keep them from our chickens. I can see scratch marks where they keep trying to get in to the coop. I wonder if it is because we are on the outskirts of a city. We have quite a bit of open areas and they have access to food from restaurants and shops.
Thanks for your video. I’m thinking of using these for an irregular but circular bed we have. My concern is that it’s very unlikely that a discrete number of pieces will fit so we’ll have to cut on length but then we will lose the fastening mechanism at the end. I’ve sent a message to the manufacturer for a solution but they haven’t replied.
I can see the challenge, they are easy enough to shape but you’d have to either have to make the shape the right size to fit the number of pieces or find a way of securing the ends. I found the company to be helpful. I hope they are helpful for you too.
Amazing to find this UK based information. We are in NE Scotland and I an hoping to get set up with a coup and run sometime this year.
Glad to be able to help. We got set up 4 years ago and love having them. I hope your set up goes ok.
I am still getting my head around peat free compost. I notice you are adding vermiculite for drainage... I find it often dries out really quickly even on its own. However, I do have a shed load of sweetcorn now growing well which I am looking forward to planting out!
I’ve found the peat free compost is very dense and needs lightening up. Germination rates have been far better since adding it. Can’t beat home grown sweetcorn!
I also add a little extra sand.
@@kaypies488 I’ve not seen that before, I’ll have to give it a go.
😂😂 everything John it’s just “may”hem out there. Great choices have an amazing weekend, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
😂 so many seeds to sow!!! It is definitely“may”hem.

Really useful!
Thank you, I really appreciate the comment and glad I could help.
Is this the 150mm depth version?
Such an informative video. I am considering a couple of chickens but not sure if my suburban garden is big enough. I don't have the space for a netted run the size of yours, sadly. I have young children and would like them to learn to care for the chickens if they don't mind being picked up. So much to consider but your videos are helping get good information relevant to the UK. Your video content, quality, lighting and sound is superb. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it. Smaller breeds like bantams can be ok in smaller gardens. This is a good site for calculating space, I hope it helps: chickenpets.com/chicken-coop-run-size-calculator?darkschemeovr=1
@@mygardeningjourney3554 Thanks so much, I will have a look at the link.
Great feeding summary and also nice to finally see some sun!
Thanks, it’s great to have some sun finally.
Try hemp bedding. It's supposed to cut down on the smell a lot.
Thanks for this. I’m about to refresh their bedding. I’ll take a look at hemp and give it a go.
My mini cyclamen have taken two years to show their faces, my favourite little plant under my Claret Ash tree, so pretty, I probably had them too deep, I’m planting another shortly, still indoors at moment but winter nearly here in Tasmania Australia
I love my cyclamen they add colour when it is most needed in the garden. I hope yours do well and come back again next year.
Many thanks for this, very helpful👍 I recently read that all poultry, regardless of flock size, will be required to be registered commencing some time this year. 😕 It doesn’t feel good to be placed under such scrutiny, for keeping so much as couple of old pet bantams, but understandable I suppose.
I’ll keep an ear out for that. I hope they keep things proportionate and, if they do make everyone register, people are not put off keeping chickens.
When you register anything in law you are giving control of whatever you register to the state. They will use this to kill your flock for the future bird flu pandemics. Do not register your chickens and remember as long as you do not give them your legal name they can't do anything. They don't want us have control of our food supply so do not entertain this over reach of power by our mental world they are creating. Moderna create a vaccine last year and their shares have spiked since MSM are creating the expectation of what they know is coming.
nice post and informative, its a shame that man are causing all the problems. I love my flocks and will do everything to protect them but it seems that we are fighting a losing battle.
Thank you for the comment! It does seem like things are always getting a little bit harder.
Yet another great Video, in fact I have subscribed! Despite being an experienced Suburban Chicken Keeper, you got a lot of great and useful information, even I have gained a couple of "Golden Nuggets" of information from your videos!
Thank you for the comment and subscribing. I started keeping chickens in 2000 and not looked back, I love having them for their fresh eggs, company and characters. I’m giving quail a go. Hope to have some video about them soon but still got lots to learn!
Another excellent video. I have a very comparable set up like you but used 1/2 inch "Hardware Cloth" instead of "Chicken Wire" and I built my coop and run on 12"x12" pavers to discourage things from burrowing under and getting in the coop and it also made clean up way easier and quicker. Are you using wood chips for bedding in your Hen House? If so, how's that working out for you, as I have herd mix reviews...
I’ve used wood chip so far and it’s been good but it is expensive. It controls the smell well but my chickens love to kick it around. I may look into trying something else this year as I need to replace what they have. I had one issue with a rat getting in but since digging in some wire mess around the run it’s not been a problem. I’ll take a look at hardware cloth, not considered that before.
What a stupendous video you have shared!!! I live on a small "allotment " that I own out right in suburbia and keep a small flock of hens for all of the same reasons you do in addition to "food security" although I dont free range due to predators! While I have kept a few different breeds, I have settled on Speckled Sussex and have found them to be an excellent dual purpose Heritage Breed although not a common breed in the US!
Sorry for the delay responding, been a busy couple of weeks at work! We started with bantams but moved to Rhode Island Reds. We only free range when we are in the garden but mainly to stop them from destroying my flowers. Foxes are an issue here, lost two flocks to them so far 🙁
We get our feathery friends in about 4 weeks I am so very grateful for all your valuable tipps and knowledge passed on to beginners like me. God bless you and all your animals.
Glad to help. Would love to hear how things go when your flock arrives. Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to answer in the comments or make a video about it for you.
Nice video man, keep posting!
Thanks for your support and for commenting.
I am new to all this, having just been given 3 chick's. Learning all I can. Does clipping the wing hurt them?
Hi, no, it doesn’t hurt them, they don’t have nerve endings in their feathers. I have read it can cause irritation but I’ve not seen my chicken sow any sign of irritation. Only clip the flight feathers on one wing. The aim of clipping them is to prevent them from flying, clipping one wing means they will be off balance and unable to get much height.
Woo hoo spring 🤔 ish 😂😂. I did some chard in starters today. It will wait a wee bit longer. Have an awesome week, Ali 🌧️☔️🇨🇦
I can’t wait for it to get warmer!! It bet it felt good to get sowing. I hope your weather gets better soon!

Ive never seen a restrive covernant saying you cant keep chickens, is it a new build thing?
I know people with it in the restrictive covenants on homes built in 50’s. I suspect it is in to try and avoid it becoming a problem for people living nearby.
We kept our 1st flock of chickens on our allotment. We had 3 White Star pullets from a breeder. Advantages, another allotment holder can help if we are away from home (we help with watering when they are away.) Disadvantages,1 you don't tend to spend as much time with your birds so they don't get as tame 2. 6:30 trips to let them out of their coop can be a problem if there are houses nearby. 3. Ours were stolen, not by a fox (no blood or carcasses anywhere) door unbolted. I far prefer having our current 3 ex-rescues (much more docile Warrens) in our back garden. We have a couple of neighbours we can call on if we go away, in exchange for eggs. We don't keep a cock so very little noise and we keep the coop and run clean so no smell.. PS All flocks have to be registered now.
I have a similar netted run and they are great. One thing I have found invaluable is a treadle feeder. You can quite easily train the chickens to use it and it keeps 4 legged unwanted guests out of your chicken feed
I’ve not used a treadle feeder. I had a rat problem for a bit but digging in some wire stopped them getting in and they left. Also, having a cat has kept the rodents at bay. Do they cost more than a standard feeder?
