QFG1 Redo - Thief - 5/5: Shadow is Lifted From the Valley
Tomorrow I'm officially finally moving into the new house and won't have internet for some time potentially. I maybe able to reply via comments with the phone but doing video uploads won't be possible until we get internet service installed. I will give a hint that my next project will be a sequel to one I've done recently, as I will get it recorded and ready for upload, just it won't be up for awhile. Anyway. The Technodrome indeed is very much a "pass the baton" type situation if you want to stand a chance at beating it where every turtle's health has to be used wisely as possible in order to get to Shredder's room with one turtle at full or near full health. Shredder's exploit can even be done with just your melee weapons as I have tried it, it works the same way, just the scrolls make it a much shorter fight due to how powerful they are. The the previous area and Technodrome itself, basically use a "hard set" enemy roster. The previous three areas can technically cycle between a couple different enemy sets somewhat randomly, but the warehouses and underground sections are hard set to specific enemy set types. You can sometimes briefly get another enemy type in the Technodrome but it quickly resets. As for a suggestion once you finish watching Popful Mail, I'd say give my Kyrandia run a check, as well as Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine. As well as potentially my Clock Tower runs. (Specifically start with the SNES one because the PS1/PSX comes later.) And maybe whatever other ones strike your fancy. But interested in what else you might do next for the channel.
Congratulations! I hope the move went/is going well! It blows my mind a little when I see speed runs or no hit runs through the Technodrome. Doesn't seem like it should be possible but these people do it routinely and with ease. Yeah, once or twice I've started the Technodrome with lower level enemies in the first room, but it always switches back as soon as all the enemies are off the screen.
@@darkwolf2859 Pardon the delay, but while I'm mostly settled I still have a bit to do. But still I hope to see more of what you have to say on the rest of the Popful Mail run, which run you choose to watch next.
So while there was a similar approach, clearly we went about handling the underground areas a bit differently since yeah, I only reserved using the scrolls against the Technodrome itself, and not against any of the foes along the way. Since I wanted as many for the inside of the Technodrone itself as possible since the enemy count is super high and a lot of them take so man hits otherwise.
You probably had the better idea overall with how deadly the Technodrome was. Ultimately I just figured if I used too much I always had the option of refilling before I actually left. Gunna go watch some more Popful Mail now!
@@darkwolf2859 Alright. Hope you enjoy the rest of it.
That level has always been a nightmare. I guess the later areas are a real nightmare. I guess area 2 is where the game begins.
Water physics and tough hit collision detection... NOT a great combination.
Aaannd down goes Scotia ! Well done for completing this challenge run. ( I would have been crippled without the magic atlas )
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I was very worried about the lack of Atlas but luckily was able to sneak through!
What an adventure! A true tour de force of to conquer the Hell Mode version of this game. Well done!
Thank you, kindly! This was a great idea and, despite the pain, I really enjoyed it!
TMNT the most confusing game as a kid when you thought you had to kill everything :)
Haha I always loved it but I also always got slaughtered...
Yeah, you'd think it'd be called the "Turtle mobile" or "Turtle van" at the very least. But it's actually called the "Party van". And yeah, 1:54: is the jump I specifically just could not master, and thus I now rely upon the jump you were testing just a few seconds prior. I just prefer falling down it to save time after successfully doing the skip jump. And this level is certainly long if you don't know where to go specifically. Basically checking every building to find Splinter. But to an extent April is sorta your guide as she and splinter tend to warn you when actual bosses are nearby. Basically asking if your weapons and health are ok, the footclan is near. It's a good heads up if you're paying attention and they do give you some directions. Like Splinter in the next area actually says what number you're aiming for to reach to get the blimp.
Hah, that makes sense. I can picture Don spending months building it and planning the big reveal of the super sophisticated name he came up with, and at the last second Mikey slapping a pizza sticker on the side and declaring it the Party Van. That jump at 1:54 is so insulting cause the other hard ones are obviously hard but that one feels like it should be easy so you feel like an idiot anytime you miss. This was actually the part of the game that I would generally get held up on as a kid. Pretty sure I never beat it once (without Game Genie cheats) cause I thought I had to do every single building and would just slowly die.
This part of the game is *so* bizarre. Your group is heading to confront Scotia & rescue Richard , and all of the sudden you are supposed resolve an ancient vendetta. And all this is happening right under Castle Cimmeria.
From a gameplay perspective, it's great. A really good challenge before the end game dungeon with some great items to gather throughout. Story wise? Totally insane.
Another clean sweep! It would have been a pain but sort of on-theme to not get the Mage levels however to get through this section without a map and no party wipes was quite the feat.
Definitely was expecting to have a lot of death here. I thought it might be just as bad as the tower, frankly. Very happy with how this turned out! Could maybe have considered trying to kill MOST of the Xeobs and then turn on the Knoll's for optimum difficulty but I actually didn't think about it until this moment so... just a little late I guess.
Yeah, Michelangelo is basically your go to turtle for "unavoidable damage sections" along with Raphael. Though Raph is a smidge more useful due to enemy types he can destroy in one hit. Also got my second project scheduled for next month now as well.
Yeah, I like using Raph's strength, he's just tough with the limited reach and, frankly, I'm just not that good... I haven't had a chance to watch yet but I saw your new vids starting to come out; looking forward to finally getting some time to watch!
@@darkwolf2859 Raph is basically a "master character", or rather a character for "master players" for those who can really use him with the utmost efficiency. Basically he's the equivalent to "Knife Runners" for Resident Evil. Yeah, they will keep coming the next several days. I hope you enjoy it when you do.
Cakewalk Caverns.
Genuinely might be the easiest section of the game, at least in the context of this challenge run.
One thing to comment is that yeah, if you want avoid losing turtles you can't play favorites "much", and have to use what is essentially a "baton" method of gameplay. While true some turtles are best for some situations and places, in some cases you have to use them in the sense of, one does a stint of a stage, then swap at the opportune moment to the next turtle in order to keep progress and keep going. That is essentially how the next portion and final stage work. As a personal aside, at least one playthrough is inbound next month. I want to try and get two more in but current circumstances may prevent me so at least one is fully scheduled.
No question. I tend to play a little better when not doing commentary, but in general I take way too much damage when I play not to use all 4 turtles on a rotation in order to keep them all alive. Sounds good, I'll keep my eyes open for it/them!
Nice trick on the ledge with Donatello and Rocksteady! Good presenting voice, and a great intro for anyone new to this classic!
Thanks! It's a really great game and I hope any fans of the game, old or new, can enjoy this run through!
Such a great game, finally played this through month ago on an R36S. Could never finish this as a kid.
What the heck is an R36S?
I'm glad someone on here recommended it! I missed it as a kid but really enjoyed it here!
I've never used an R36S, but I think it is a hand held system, like a gameboy or switch, that plays a lot of old/retro games. Could be wrong thought.
Nice work in Yvel and another clean run on the board!
In hindsight, I suppose one final challenge I could have added would be not being allowed to enter buildings to rest during the war, but I'm not sure I could have survived that brutal grind after the white tower...
To a degree on the not walking away with much at the end. You at least had two Orichalcum beads. In my run, I basically left with a good several dozen in each of my runs. But speaking of TMNT for NES, I actually did my own playthrough of that a few years back. It's in two parts, and there's something rather special in part 2 I did. You might even learn some tricks if you give it a watch before you do your run. =) Let me know what ya think of it. But as for the ending of the game here, it kinda loses just a "smidge" of it's luster without the screen shake, and the crumbling noises. And you gave better directions vs someone else's direction of "you have to appeal to his ego", noooo, it's threaten him! And yeah, it's a lot better to watch someone who knows what they're doing vs screwing up all the time.
True, I shouldn't sell Indy so short. Those beads are pretty potent, so he does at least have something to show for his efforts! I already completed the recording, unfortunately, but I'll give it a watch! I don't think I did anything too special in my run through so I probably will have something from to learn from your play through.
First time and minute on the upper floor, "Yep... This is the White Tower." It's such an insane jump in difficulty that it almost feels like it should have been the final level or at best completely optional. The wraiths cast that overpowered snake-spell and they can spam it to a punishing level. I felt like this area got the least amount of polish overall and it shows. Either allow the ghosts to attack you from in the walls or put a limit/cooldown on their spells. Anyway, that was quite the grind but you got through it!
It's actually not too bad if you have the Vaelan's Cube--that thing is insanely powerful against ghosts and goes through them like a machine gun. It's one of the hidden things that the game expects you to figure out, much like the correct way to defeat Scotia. But DarkWolf is deliberately not using it as a condition of his challenge run.
@strikezilla01 No question, it is one of the craziest spikes in difficulty of any game I have ever played. Obviously the idea is that you are supposed to use the Vaelan's cube, but it is not explained nearly clear enough in game. It never bothered my much because I have always known to use it, but trying to get through without it was miserable. For me, the snake spell is the biggest issue. I think I could manipulate the situation well enough to survive them hiding in the walls, but the snake spell is just so devastating and they use it so fast/frequently that it just cannot be overcome without at least a little bit of luck. I cannot tell you how drained I felt as I finally finished the tower on this run. I was genuinely shaking.
@mam162 Absolutely. The ghosts can bum-rush you hard enough to get a kill in even with the cube, but in general doing the 3rd floor with the cube isn't too much of a challenge, so long as you aren't acting foolish.
Great job so far! Can't wait to see you take on White Tower Floor 3. Incidentally, the flying worm things are technically called "Avian Worms".
You say that now, but wait till you actually see it... Torture. I swear I look it up every time I play and then 5 minutes later I forget all over again...
Yikes! I've completed a playthrough on Ferocious, but all the other handicaps too? You have my respect, sir.
It definitely was not for the faint of heart, but I won't pretend that I didn't love it.
Moe: And what did YOU tell em what does a navigator do? Curley: I told em a navigator crawls in a swamp until it becomes a suitcase! And bites like this! Rrrawarwarwaaar!
No question that this, and all games, would be improved by more stooges and more alligators. Hence the amazing "Stooge Fighter" in Space Quest 6.
@@darkwolf2859 Well, I've been enjoying your LPs so far and am waiting for the final video on this. I appreciate how you actually try and play the games more efficiently and directly, without including a whole ton of "fluff". Do you have any other LPs for different games in mind? One comment I will make, this game is one of my favorite point and click adventure games, but I kinda prefer the OG sound font or whatever. Mostly because it has a few tracks that just sound better, but most of all having actual sound effects that don't sound like they're done with musical instruments. It's weird how those are tied together. Doors have a distinctive "datink" "dunk" type sound. And noises for splashes, among other things. I have dedicated playlists for my two runs of the game, team and wits you can have a look at for comparison on the sound side of things. (I use keyboard hot gets to really make it flow quickly, both for item usage and dialogue trees.) I'd be interested in seeing what you think of my other various playthroughs. At present I only have one actual let's play.
Nice, makes think of Arthurian lore.
Conrad can be Arthur, Michael is Lancelot, Ak' Shel will be Merlin, and Kieran can be brave brave brave brave Sir Robin.
2:20 So; throw the mace, don't swing it. ( Also, that Larkon death animation is spectacularly gory. )
Exactly. Just the way they intended blunt handled weapons to be used...
😱
Yea, brutal difficulty can be...well, brutal.
Interesting strategy for the Larkon! When I first played this game as a kid, our family couldn't collectively think of a way to defeat it (since we didn't know about the skull). So, my dad accidently stumbled into the "lure and attack from behind" strategy since the giant slug cannot turn around. He ended up clearing the Urbish Mines, obtaining Pulson, and then taking care of the Larkon on the way out. Haha
Oh 100%. Used to do that full loop around from Lower Opinwood to the Swamp then back through Upper Opinwood to sneak around the Larkon all the time.
21:44 Hmmm, have you ever tried stealing the ruby ?
I have, but similar to attacking them I very rarely do it. If I remember correctly, doing so avoids the war but still makes all the shop keepers hate you. Been a long time though so I might be wrong.
Cleanest swamp run ever!
Still breaks my heart to fight the Gorkha. Always loved those guys.
2:24 Oof, that's cold.
I mean, it's not my proudest moment but...
*looks at rules* Those are..rather punishing restrictions.
Haha well, I wanted to make sure the challenge could live up to the name.
Your kitty is not interfering, he/she is cheering for Kieran.
Lol given my personal hatred of Kieran, you can see why I failed to realize that was her goal! But clearly you are correct; she needed to support her fellow feline based lifeform.
Wow... That gray pentrog should be considered a mini-boss after that encounter. Two-tapped your party neigh instantly. The gold one was equally punishing. Haha
The Cave Dwellers, the Pentrogs, and the Manthas can all be so brutal with their one hit kills, but man the deaths here were so painful...
Interesting game.
It's amazing, I highly recommend it! Great right from the start and has a lot of replayability.
Nice deathless run! That fireball trap nearly ruined it. Haha
Had to get a clean video eventually. I would have been so devastated if that fireball killed us...
Interesting have thought of doing the conquest series?
Someone in the past recommended the Eye of the Beholder series which I do hope to do at some point, but I don't honestly have much familiarity with the Conquest series. Is it also by Westwood?
@@darkwolf2859 No a serria series based on first Arthurian legend then followed by Robin hood legend in the sequel.
Nice, looking forward to this series!
Hope you enjoy!
Look forward to number 5. There is a fan project as well to make 5 into a vga
I would love that. 5 is a great game but there are several times when the camera work/mechanics/etc just aren't as sophisticated as they need to be. Plus, QFG in VGA just feels...right
The Paladin is the only one who cannot get the health potion in the monastery because of class.
Damn Paladin, always needing to be so high and noble...
Are you using the latest patch from Gog?
Nope, Steam
I would like to see the moves from QFG2 VGA incorporated to the fighting system.
No question. QFG3's fighting is disappointing, but 4's is much worse. It was a clever attempt but just ends up being too clunky to work in practice.
I wonder if Talkfu was meant to raise communication at one point?
Either that or just a more straight forward joke/reference to when heroes win with some kind of brief speech. Or maybe a somewhat subtle reference to our victory with the Ultimate Joke?
Ya, the axe is the only unique thing about the fighter.
I like that they at least did something, but that's one of the most disappointing parts of the later games. The Paladin just makes the Fighter redundant. I would get a lot of joy from continuing the series and enhancing the differences between the paths.
Never met The domovoi in the Burgomisters.
I think I convinced myself as a kid that he would show up there and now my brain refuses to believe it's not true.
Can take the broom from Nicolae's as well for what ever reason.
Damn, I never knew that. I guess there isn't really any reason if you aren't a paladin, but still. If it's not nailed down...
I am sure you just forgot or get it later but there was healing drink in the monastery.
Is it locked in the desk? I think I probably forgot to grab it.
@@darkwolf2859 it is in the glass cabinet above the domovoi you rehydrate.
Yes the desk key is for the cell.
Fair. I think I've always been too impatient to free Davy so I always do the cell first.
Love this game. There is a thief sine indicating the exit in heart chamber.
All 4 are my "favorite" depending on my mood, but this one is definitely the most complete.
I wonder how much grinding skills can be done with the mirror match.
Might depend on how long you can survive.
could use healing on miere bat baby.
Oh wow, really? I don't think I ever thought to try that, thanks!
@@darkwolf2859 welcome
I always found parry difficult.
No question. Very difficult to do successfully on any regular basis.
Interesting.
Definitely a series worth trying, if you've never played.
Are you using the latest patch?
This is the steam version and is the most updated one there (or rather the most updated one as of 2020) but there definitely might be more recent patches floating around that I don't know about and haven't used.
