Landscape astrophotographer from Slovenia, so let's discover together what this place and other countries have to offer when it comes to the night sky.
From the Peak to the Stars: Mt. Porezen and the Heart and Soul Nebula
In this video, we will try to capture the Heart and Soul Nebula above the Mt. Porezen using astromodified Nikon Z6, Samyang 135mm and Fornax Lightrack ii. We will also shoot this as Ha RGB image, so this means I will also use Astronomik 12nm Ha clip in filter.

Mangart saddle - my favourite place but at the same time the most difficult place to capture astro images due to the harsh environment of Julian alps. Despite MANY failed attempts, I can't wait to come back here.

Mount Porezen is a mountain of the outlying Alps located in northwestern Slovenia. It is the highest summit of the Slovenian Prealps and in Cerkno region. It just occurred to me that I did not explain what is on top of Mount Porezen, beside the marking of the highest point - in video there it's also visible a monument, dedicated to 36 fallen Partisan soldiers from a battle which took place on 2...
How to align H-alpha and RGB images with Auriga RegiStar
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Answering the most common question I get - how to align Ha and RGB single panel images or panoramas. The process can be used in either landscape astrophotography or deep space photography and elsewhere too, for example if you want to align meteor shower images on your base image, or some astrophotographers like to mix different focal lengths and cameras / sensor sizes on the same celestial obje...

First and foremost, my biggest thank you goes to my astro friend Jeroen Linnenkamp, also known as StarScaper, because he kept the spark alive when it comes to the whole vlogging thing all the tips he gave me. Same I can say for a few other friends of mine who helped me in one way or another (Nejc Debevec, Fredrik Sandkvist, Simon Zeilder and Uroš Fink). In this trip we will try to capture the n...

Inverted beauty - Sunset at Mangart saddle. My favourite season at my favourite place
Great video - thanks for taking us with you :-)
Glad you enjoyed it And thank you for watching :D.
Great Vlog Matej...! Thanks for sharing. The image is really beautiful. Looking forward to your next astro adventure!
Thanks a lot, Benjamin. I really appreciate your continued support!
Fabulous talk, my friend and good luck in 2025, yes Alyn was a special influence to us all. Keep up the good work 👏 🙌 sorry this one skipped me 😢.
No worries, Carl. Yes, his influence made you, me and many more friends. Thank you and all the best to you too in 2025! I know you have some awesome plans already :D
Great to see a video from you again, and that final image is beautiful! And about why so many of your vlogs are about that same mountain? Let me tell you, if I had a mountain like that close to me - ALL of my vlogs would be from there 😂
Thank you for watching and compliments, Martin :D. Haha, I think I understand you, but you know, you have beautiful landscape too... its just a bit different :D
@matej.mlakar yes, I love the landscape here as well. And I've always been about working with what you have around the corner But I got some mountains in my latest video at least 🙂
@@MartinFransson I see you uploaded a new vlog :D finally! I cant wait to watch it
@matej.mlakar yes, and I even got a mountain this time 🙂
Stunning result Matej 👌, and interesting tip with using the z6 in video mode. The z6iii has starlight view mode but I'll try it with the z6 next time.
Thank you very much! Z6iii is great... even Z6ii because of live charging and extended shutter :D those are the only things I miss on my Z6
Great shot 🤩 and I feel you on sleep deprivation, coffee rarely works for me
Thank you very much! Yeah, I miss coffee a lot :D
Nice vlog, as usual 👌🏽 And agree, nightscape without coffee is a challenge 😅
Thank you very much! Ah, if you are addicted to coffee, even daytime functioning can be a challenge :D
Beautiful!. This inspires me to retry that target someday soon, but I do not have a landscape like that! Great work.
Thank you and I am really happy to hear, because if I can inspire even just one person with those vlogs, than this is it.
The Heart Nebula is one of my favorite deep-sky objects. That's a beautiful composition, with the church in the foreground and the mountains behind it. I have not seen many images of it with a landscape in the foregound. As for star glow filters, I have several different diffusion filters and have been eager to test how they perform with stars, but the weather hasn't cooperated so far.
Thank you, Tim! I think it is because that target can be quite high for some and it can be a challenge to find a suitable landscape to go along with it. I was looking at a few (Tiffen, Kase, etc...), and someone was selling Kenko for 30€, which was quite cheap. It is a good filter - Alan Dyer made a review comparing it to Alyn's and Tiffen's. Hope you will make a vlog about that too. I dont think there is a single star glow comparison video out there.
What's the purpose of that RGB step and shooting the tablet?
Yeah, I forgot to explain that. Shooting the tablet is for taking "flat frames". Flat frames are used to correct images for unwanted brightness changes across the the image, such as vignetting and it also removes any dust spots on lens or camera sensor, which would be normally visible on the images.
What a wonderful final image you captured here Matej .. love it. Also enjoyed seeing your process for shooting these type of images.
Thanks a lot Richard! And I cant wait to see your next adventure.
Fantastic capture! Very inspirational for me to push myself to capture something new in astrophotography. Thank you! Wishing you a speedy recovery. Take care!
Thank you very much and it makes me happy to hear that you got inspired! Good luck with the next project :D
Get well soon Matej! Awesome video:) so explain everything so well! And incredible final image!
Hey, thank you very much! And thanks for get-well wishes as well :D
Outstanding image, Matej - I think that’s the first deepscape with the heart and soul that I’ve seen. The composition with the church is just 👌. Hope you’re continuing to recover, and it was awesome to see another video from you.
Ye, it can be quite high for a lot of people, maybe that's why it can be overlooked :D. And thank you for your kind words and support!
Always a good night when Matej releases a new video! Great planning, great adventure and great result! I think the video is also really well put together mate. I hope the injury gets better soon also. And oh, what lens adapter are you using for the Samyang? I really need that lens back for Nikon now I've sold the Canon one a while ago!
Jeroen, my friend, thank you so much! Happy to hear you enjoyed it. I use the Nikon F version. It is a great lens. I mean, I have Tamron G2 70-200mm as well, but Samyang is much more compact and faster.
Fabulous image and Vlog mate get ya strength back so you can drink coffee very important 😀 . Loved it....
Carl, thanks a lot! Haha, man, I miss Pizza and coffee a LOT! :D
Glad to see you again! Great capture ❤
Thank you very much! :D
Hey thank you for sharing! What a great deepscape you got there! Brilliant planning. You always seem so happy when you're talking to the camera and your English seems to be getting more fluently! 💪👍
Haha, thanks you, my friend! :D I think a good night out makes eveyone happy :D
Glad you managed to get out with your camera Matej, even if it was only a short distance...fantastic detail in the image 👏& good luck with your recovery...
Hey, thank you very much for your kind words and support! Happy to hear you liked it, means a lot :)
Nice to see you back in business. Good health to you!
Hey, Freddy, thank you very much! Should I use flash of light or some other spell? :D
@ perhaps Renew? 😂
@@frexizz as long as its not Redemption :D
Nice video man! Are you shooting only flats or also darks?
Hey, thanks a lot! I shoot only flats and even that I do it only when I'm doing "DSO" or stacking. When I'm shooting panos, where I have single image per panel, I skip flats.
@matej.mlakar ok sounds reasonable! Keep up the good work💪🏻
Thanks for such educational videos! It opens a different perspective!
Alright, looks like I forgot to mention two things: - I did not add flat frames when I was explaining which images I need (and what flat frames are) - and exif for star glow image: ISO 1000, f2, 15 seconds :D
Hi Matej, Thanks for this useful tuto, I'm about to receive my Ha filter so it's the main question I was wondering. Do you know if siril can perform the same?
Hey, and thank you as well. I have no direct experience with Siril, but my friend uses it and he also has to make those aligments in RegiStar.
@matej.mlakar Thanks for your feedback. I'll make some research and let you know if I find a solution with this (free) alternative
@@raphaellencrerot I hope you find something, because I am sure that would make many people happy. I came across only this or Astro Pixel Processor, which is also something you have to pay for.
Putting yourself in front of the camera, is so hard to do. It doesn’t mix well with astrophotography. It never looks like there is a crucial moment in Astro, but that alignment, combined with the correct weather, and moon phase mean that shot might be a one in a few years opportunity when it happens, and then just for a few minutes. Throw in filming a video at the same time, plus the amount of test shots to get the best composition. Then carry all the kit for photography and video to the top of a mountain against a strict time limit. Sometimes it feels more like a selection process for a special forces team. So yes it’s really appreciated. Hope you and your family have a happy and healthy year.
Thank you so much for your kind words! You really captured the essence of what goes into astrophotography and creating content and sometimes it really can be a lot of work, but knowing that you appreciate the effort makes it all worth it. I’m grateful for your support and for being part of this journey. Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful 2025!
Have a happy new year Matej and to continue with your wonderful channel.
Happy new year! And thank you very much, I will do my best :D
Thanks for being a great part of this great astro community this year Matej! Looking forward to 2025 💪
Thanks, Jeroen... you know I would not be a part of this if you didnt keep pushing me :D. Means a lot and I cant wait to see more from you in 2025 :D
You will always have my support ❤
And it means a lot to me :D
Merry Christmas and alle the best for 2025 Matej! Many clear skies and nightsky adventures are waiting for you in the future. Great little video and kind words!
Thank you very much, Tobias and all the best to you too!
Keep going man, the community needs more people like you. Take care
I appreciate that! And I will do my best :D I wish you happy holidays!
All the very best for the Christmas season Matej. You've had some awesome adventures and captured some amazing images this year. Looking forward to following along in 2025.
Thank you very much, Richard. I know I am nowhere near the quality or quantity compared to you when it comes to YT content, but your support means a lot. I wish you all the best in 2025.
@@matej.mlakar Thanks so much Matej
Merry Christmas Matej! I wish you and your loved ones health and happiness!

Fantastic channel my friend. I wish you and your Family a happy new year and CS 👍🏼
Thank you very much, Stefan, it means a lot! I too wish you Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Well said Matej. Glad to have discovered you and a posse of other small channels out there brave and generous enough to put themselves in front of the camera and share their passion and astrophotography adventures 👌
Thank you very much! Its a lot of work, as you know this yourself, but I love it :D. I wish you Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Have a happy new year. I will be following you in the future, as I have in the past. I watch your astrovlog because you are sincere, and down to earth. can you share some of your processing tips. clear skys.
Happy new year to you too and thank you for your compliments - means a lot. I get a lot of requests for post processing, so I will do my best to make something in 2025.

Merry Christmas Matej! Ready to see you're astrovlogs for the 2025 🔥
Merry Christmas and happy new year! I hope I will be able to make someting soon :D.
Merry Christmas! I would never have thought that you were camera shy. I really enjoy your videos and the results don't have to be a success! Share also the fails.
Merry Christmass and happy new year, Martin. Ah, you know how it is - struggle is "behind" the camera and it doesnt snow in videos like this :D. I will try... I know its a part of our hobby.
Merry Christmas and all the best to you!
Merry Christmas and happy new year :D. I wish you all the best too.
Well spoken!! Thank you for your work with doing those vlogs! 😂✌️ I hope we meet in 2025!! 🎉
Thanks for the support in 2024 :D. YES! Its easy... you just have to drive to Slovenia :D.
Matej, awesome video. After RegiStar aligns the Ha-RGB images, it only aligns it only where the Ha signal is, obviously. After alignment is complete, RegiStar produces a small section of the aligned portion only. How do you then incorporate that into the RGB and the entire image? I know you advised the viewers to follow along with tutorial videos made by Starscaper, John Rutter, late Alyn Wallace, and Johan, Would it be possible to kindly do one alignment video from start to finish where you use RegiStar to align the Ha-RGB and then finish the processing using Ps. That way it will be easy to follow along. Thank you and Happy Holidays.
Hey, thank you very much! I get that asked a lot, but the thing is, my workflow is far from perfect and every image means I have to do some playing around and experimenting. When I will have a more structured workflow I can make a video, but sadly I don't think I will make one very soon. Blending Ha and RGB images is at the moment the most difficult thing when it comes to post processing my astro images. Happy holidays to you too!
I do not have a chance to use Auriga Registar because of Mac platform but as you mentioned in this video you set panorama blending in PTGui as a zero overlap. So it caused another problem about smooth panels stitching (resulting mysterious black holes in background, bad align airglow in overall sky, banding between some panels even after exposure optimization etc in the final image) I do always my panoramas 65% overlap but zero overlap function messed up everything and caused different stitching problemas. How you get rid off them?
Is your PTGui updated? Because I think not too long ago there have been some changes to Multiband. Also, you can try "Find optimum seams" ON and move the slider to 1/1. Another thing is when you change the blending (zero overlap / multiband) is to go to main PTGui window, where you have a menu on the side, then go to Exposure/HDR --> settings --> Optimize brightness: change to enable --> OK --> Optimize now!
@@matej.mlakar Okay thanks i will try.
You have a very beautiful mountainous country
Yes, I agree :D I'm very lucky that I live here.
Watching that vertical Ha image register with your full arch pano was amazing! Bought RegiStar, and already put it to use on some test images I took in October. Looking forward to trying this with Orion later this month!
Great to hear that and good luck with Orion this winter season :D.
Nice work and opens up a lot of new possibilities and obviously safes time! Good job, I'm looking forward for future tutorials! BTW did you try the chinese HA filter and have you got a link where to buy it? Thanks
Thanks, yep I hope I will have a chance to use it for meteor showers in the future too. Here is the link (hope YT wont mess with link) tinyurl.com/ydmt5sw6

Thank you very much :D
This was my first ever Astrophotography target and I was so excited when I saw it for the first time. Got plenty of photos, image stacking is still all new for me and learning the ropes, this comet isn't one I will forget as it was the spark for me to get into Astrophotography.
I hope it will come out as you envisioned it! And congratulations and at the same time welcome at the beginning of an wonderful era for you, of wonder and admiration of the universe. I am sure you will enjoy it.
Amazing shot Matej, the low level of clouds the milky way and the comet, congratulations What is the height of the place where you are.
