It was so exciting that I quickly grabbed my camera and headed to the Orca Cannery to see some beautiful fish and photograph them. Once I entered the door, I realized that I was not there to just photograph the beauty of fish, but the process of cleaning up fish. Orca Cannery is located right in front where we are staying in Cordova. Fresh water fishing guides bring fish over to Orca Cannery to...

Robert Giles 20th Century Letterpress Printing
Просмотров 14 тыс.10 лет назад
Letterpress printing has not dead yet. Robert Giles is proud to be the third generation letterpress printer. Giles followed his grandfather and father’s footstep and career path and started working at newspaper companies as a printer since his early twenties. Over the course of his career, Bob witnessed a lot of shifts in the printing industry, especially with the advent of cold type, offset pr...
As a time served letterpress printer (with the same surname) I feel the same about the scrapping of these wonderful machines.
Loved the video!
Government never likes to cure problems because when they do they have to fire the people that they've hired and therefore the politicians lose the votes that take taxpayers money. It's a never-ending cycle of government waste because if they ever fix the problem they'll be out of a job so there's never real cure for the problem. It's an endos perpetual money pit. The duski goose population has exploded in the Willamette valley and so have the rest of the populations of various species. It's time to open up the dusky goose hunting along with the other species that winter in the wellama valley along with them. But the US fish and wildlife who has dominance over state wildlife programs will not allow hunting even though they claim there are mortgage than is ever lived since mankind has been keeping records ever before. Let's hear the other side of the story!!
I feel your print passion
Nice to see the old Linotype once again.
Desiderata, si haré una.
Estamos en 2022, hay menos imprentas, libros, tarjetas, creo que estamos brutos con el celular. La apatía se ve y siente, ¿Ahora quien podrá defendernos?
Collars are ugly, cruel, and need to go away. Stupid idea whoever decided to use them.
Photopolymer plates can add the creative versatility to keep the workshop in business-look at the demand for bespoke wedding stationary for example
Something fascinating about the older printing presses-beautiful to watch So good to see you keeping the craft alive
Letterpress is completely dead now, don't delude yourself, it started dying out 50 years ago and there is no way anyone can start up a letterpress business today and hope to make a living from it... If you are deluded enough to think that you can start up a letterpress business today, then it will cost you a bloody fortune before you even get started and which you will see ‘no’ returns from at the end. You will need to close your non-letterpress business down straight after opening it before you lose the rest of your money!
As long as you treat it as a hobby you will enjoy it. There is money to be made in the arty crafty world but only if you are in the right place and know the trade. Don't start up without first talking to someone who has been in the trade.
@@headleycaryer3795 And where are these "right places"?
@@redblade8160 There are an amazing number of people who will pay good money for letterpress printed things like wedding invitations, menus, cards etc. on the internet.
@@headleycaryer3795 You don't know the letterpress business as well as you think you do. I know a lot of people that have had to close their letterpress business down because they could not even pay their overheads for lack of customers. They could not even drum up enough customers online.
@@redblade8160 The problem with Letterpress now is it that it has to be Bespoke luxury items or Artisan. This means you have to be, possibly, better at advertising than printing! I have been in the trade since 1951. Started in letterpress as a compositor/printer and went through Litho to now doing Digital. To try starting up now would be total madness as you say. Finding equipment would be a problem, let alone being able to afford it. If you look online in the large cities like London you will find several Letterpress companies doing very well, but there are all high end products.
Thank you for posting the video. Brings back happy memories for me. I spent 40 years in letterpress printing.
Wonderfull video with feelings for typographical printing. I am a retired printer and a member of a letterpress-museum in Esbjerg DK. See: www.bogtrykmuseet.dk
Great video and I see a lot of love going into Bobs work. I am a retired printer and loved the trade.
I just bought my first metal lead typefaces the other day for $20. the seller was so happy I bought it after people told her to recycle it. Im 23 years old and know this is something that is disappearing but ill i love it and the history behind it. Computers are cool but theres nothing like touching physical type and inking it
Interesting video...!!!
esto me emociona mucho, soy impresor y creo que las cosas no están bien, hoy estamos 2017, que haremos con un parque de máquinas tan grande sin uso. Quien podrá defendernos?
God bless you Steve for your unselfish dedication to your friend Gale. I'm very sorry for your loss. it sounds like you two had a very unique friendship. thank you for the inspiration and for everything you do. ❤
Loved the vid, I am trying to get my Ludlow going now but finding large mats for it is a challenge.
For small jobs adding the third roller is a waste of ink and time. The third roller only needs to go on when printing a full forme.
Thank you for making such a wonderful video showcasing my Grandpa's passion! I have always wished I lived closer to my Grandpa Bob so that I could spend more time in that shop!
Very nice video!!
Beautiful and inspiring.
Much more than I had in my shop. Excellent video!
truly inspiring. I hope you are able to get a handful of local people interested in the process and perhaps keeping it alive in your neighborhood. Your shop is incredibly well equipped, its like a museum. Keep up the good work
