thabk you so much very helpful
Glad to hear that!
Great video. I love my view finder...........but the hole in the middle is actually a color checker.* Line the hole up with a part of your subject that you want to match the color of.........mix your color and place some of the mix on the end of a palette knife.......line the hole back up on your subject and place the palette knife with you mix next to the hole and check your match. The plastic of the view finder is gray to make it easier to see the two colors side by side. *I had my view finder for years and never knew this. One day I was cleaning up my painting area and was about to finally throw away the box my view finder came in, and inside the box was piece of paper explaining the picture ratios and a arrow pointing to the hole in the middle.....which I had always thought was string a carrier through........and it explained that this was a color checker.
Yes, it is a color checker - I should have mentioned that. Thanks for bringing it up! However, personally I rarely use it as such as I prefer it as viewfinder - i find it helpful having a very small hole to peer through when "hunting" for a good composition.
interesante
Good Morning, Elisabeth! Nice, thank you. 🖌️😊
Good morning! So glad you found it helpful!
Nice POV! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for your interesting videos 😁💝
Very glad you are enjoying them :)
Thank you so much for explaining this tool 😁💝
You are so welcome!
Wow! Very interesting! I never considered using a view finder before your video...thank you! I put it in my amazon cart.. ❤
Thats so great! Glad you will start using it :)
Hi! Can I ask if you used an oil or medium to mix with your oils?
I did use a little bit of linseed oil while painting - but not very much
Thank you so much for this demo. Just beautiful.
You are so welcome, glad you enjoyed!
Love your way of describing the process and the subtlety of the colour mixes and approach. Will be getting back to the Foundational Art Course very soon, I promise!
Thank you so much! Look forward to seeing you back in the Foundational course Sue!
I really like it, thank you very much.
Glad to hear that, thank you!
I don’t understand the purpose of gluing the fabric to board..what are you going to do with it? I came here to see if I could use it with my painted , paint by numbers canvas THEN frame it behind a picture frame with glass
the purpose of gluing canvas to a board is for it to be attached to a rigid surface - this allows it to be framed. You cannot properly frame a loose piece of canvas. If you prefer to stretch a piece of canvas over stretcher frames this is also possible - unless you don't have enough space around the edges to stretch it. Typically paint by numbers canvases are attached to a rigid surface already - so you might be able to slip it into a frame as is :)
Brava!
Thank you!
Thank you for your amazing video, your skill, your enthusiasm and your love of painting which shines through in your explanation. Learnt a lot. 😊
Thank you so much for your kind words! Very glad this video is helpful.
You ate an excellent tutor. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I never thought to use the knife that way! I will try it as I'm often adjusting my shapes. I especially appreciate your gloved hand. What's on us is also in us and the last thing we need is paint inside our bodies. Thank you for not only demonstrating a great technique but also safer way to enjoy painting. (Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate.)
Thank you for sharing! So glad this video inspired to use the palette knife in a different way. Yes - completely agree about glove wearing! I almost always wear gloves now while painting after years and years of not.
Excellent demonstration! Thank you!
You are so welcome, thanks for watching!
You will have to do a video on finger painting Elizabeth. Joke aside. Thank you, I often use a tiny touch of Aliz crimson, and will use a couple of blues depending on what I am observing, warm or cool and so on.
haha yeah - I use my fingers quite a bit 😆. Yes! Alizarin crimson is a great color to add in for clouds - I like it as well. I also like to use different blues (pthalo blue and cerulean blue specifically), was trying to keep it super simple in this video as that tends to do better on RUclips. But would be good to go a little bit more complex in the future as well.
Very nice. Who would have thought those colors would be used to paint clouds?
Yes - its pretty amazing how far you can stretch these colors.
Great, thank you ! 😍🌸
So welcome! :)
😮RESPECTED MADAM WHY THIS HAIR CUT ❓
After watching this wonderful demo, that is the question you come up with?

If you are just getting started learning how to paint, do you have any recommendations to learn the basics ?
Hi! Yes, I would recommend focusing on getting a strong foundation in value first and foremost. Do a lot of charcoal drawings that focus on creating clear light and dark values. You could also just work with black and white paint if you would prefer to do this exercise in paint. It is most helpful to work from life as this forces you to learn how to simplify well. Once you have a strong foundation in value then start to work with color. I have an article on the fundamentals of painting that might be helpful to take a look at - you can take a look at the value section. artstudiolife.com/fundamentals-of-painting/
Your demonstration of these techniques is just what I have needed. This video opens doors for the use of palette knife that I had no idea existed. Kudos!
Am so glad to hear this video was helpful in seeing what is possible with the palette knife!
A lovely fresh outlook for the use of palette knives, thank you so much for your take on these fascinating art instruments.
You are so welcome! I appreciate your kind words.
Thank you for a great tutorial on the muti use of the palette knife. You are a accomplished artist for sure :)
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Tgsnk you for this short darker yellows video. i would like to learn more about your color mixing class, but I don'see it below on my iphone. Any suggestion how to find it?
Hi! So glad this video is helpful for you. You can learn more about my color mixing master class. here artstudiolife.com/color-mixing-masterclass-course/
What type of canvas are you using? I mean, I just use canvases all the time that I already stretched, but I would like to do other options. Can you tell me please? Thank you.
Hi Kimberly, I am using an acrylic primed linen canvas. Specifically I am using this - shrsl.com/4tjwp - from blick art materials. I mount it with masking tape onto a wood board while I paint. When the painting is complete and wish to frame it I then mount it more properly onto a board. I have another video showing how to do that here :) - ruclips.net/video/MD532lqmv2g/видео.html - This works for mounting both a completed painting, primed blank canvas or unprimed canvas. You might enjoy it as a change from working on stretched canvas!
Thank you🎉
You are so welcome!
Have you tried "Odorless" solvent for your brushes? I like your style of art and will be watching more of your videos... Thank you for sharing!
So glad you are enjoying my videos! Thank you for your kind words. I have tried odorless solvent in the past, but I prefer to not use it as one still inhales the fumes even if one can't smell it. I just try to minimize my use of it as little as possible.
Hehe... yeah- let's talk about shellac first- It is a resin, a hard resin. It is wonderful on wood but is only used in conjunction with artwork on the BACK of panels. Why? Becuase it cracks, and yellows HORRIBLY, and must be refreshed over time. Shellac must be melted via alcohol, recombining the compounds to slick over the surface once again, and it is wise to remove whatever old shellac has flecked up before recoating. If you use this as a base for oils... it can degrade and destroy the art with no recourse for any conservator. How can you apply new under the artwork? How can you separate it from the paper? You can't. This is why the masters used gesso made from hide glue, plaster (gypsum) and chalk, the chalk and plaster sets up a hard non moving substrate for the painting that will not move or crack. You can use this on paper. You can also use hide glue to size the paper before adding hide glue gesso. It is water soluble, and all you need is hot water. An alternative is PVA glue, which is much easier to use.
I use Zinsser's amber shellac and really like the surface it creates. I use on both wood panels and paper. When I use it in my sketchbook, I take a section of a brown paper bag and put it behind the page I am shellacking, this protects the other pages in the sketchbook, and also lifts the page I have shellacked slightly, which seems to decrease the drying time. I have also used a fan on low to help with the drying time. Another thing to consider is putting a piece of wax paper between the unused, shellacked pages, to make sure they don't stick together.
ah thats a great idea to put a brown paper bag behind the page to protect it and decrease the drying time. Also good tip on placing wax paper between pages. Thanks for sharing!
This is beautiful sculpt action...
Thank you so much!
Very informative. Thank you very much!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this it’s a big help 😊 could I ask if you would paint straight onto this surface once the shellac is dry and also is there any chance of you making a video showing us what it’s like to paint on. Thank you ☺️
You are so welcome! Yes, you can paint directly onto the shellac once it is dry. Thats a great idea, will use one of my shellac surfaces to paint on in a future video.
@ that’s great thank you 🤩
Thank you, I have lots of watercolor paper to try this one. Can you still roll the paper up after painting is dry, or will it cause cracking?
I was about to ask the same question 😊 really interested in this
Thats great you have lots of watercolor paper! Thats a great question. For your painting to be the most safe and archival it is best for it to be mounted onto a rigid surface. Bending/ rolling it up could lead it to crack over time. I wish it could have the option of being rolled up without any consequences as I also like to roll up paintings for storing purposes!
How many lac bugs does it take to make 1kilogram of shellac ? Between 50 000 & 300 000. Oh sorry - didn’t know that’s where the stuff comes from ? 😂
Thank you fr the info.. luv India
You are so welcome!
Thank you for these cleaning tips. I also use Rosemary Brushes. They are great and even though they come from England (I am in Canada) they are competitive price wise.
You are so welcome! Glad that you also enjoy Rosemary brushes, they really are competitive price wise. Which is surprising as they do come all the way from England.
