OUR 9 MONTH ALUCAB GEN 3.1 EXPEDITION ROOFTOP TENT REVIEW!
Hi guys,
Back this week with a quick review of our Alucab 3.1 Expedition tent. We have tried to keep our review as unbiased as we can, but to be honest, we are absolutely stoked with this tent. In saying that though, it does have it's flaws and we felt they needed to be mentioned as well.
Our pros -
- Roof pockets
- Ladder
- Side awning
- Double canvas
- Air vent
- Condensation mat
- Electrical point and light
- Insulated roof panel
- Enough room for 2 pillows, queen sleeping bag and a coverlette on top
Our cons -
- Weighs approx. 88kg
- Mattress is only 1280 wide inside
- Light switch is hard to access
- 12v point flimsy

You guys need to just stay home.!!!!!!
Absolutely educational & engineering wisdom in your build and set up. a well thoughtout buld buddy. truly enjoyed you sharing the scale, the steps and reason, of each components involvement. Lastly, thank you and, "'Keep on Trucking", safely!!!
Great car , gotta laugh how most people say things like you said about kings gear , “I’ve had the winch for a year and it’s been bullet proof , but you don’t like to say that kings gear” , don’t understand why people do this , if it’s bullet proof it’s good .
Why use rivets vs TEK screws?
hey guys loved the vid on stanage! Im heading there in a few days. any tips on camping and fishing spots? I do have a good sea kayak. Cheers
Hey Ben, definitely check out Endeavour, and if you drive around past muddy madness, it’ll take you to an inlet which is good fishing from land! Cheers
Where is that beach located?
In the cover photo? That’s the west coast of Fraser Island
canopy size?
It’s a 1800x1800x860 canopy!
Hi Just read your comment and thought you might like to Have a look at my rig, canopy set up and 12v set up. see what you think. Cheers Out There Touring
Thank you for all the info. 👍👍👍👍

Awesome videos thank you, loved the three part series. Exactly what we wanted to see. We're heading up the Cape mid September with family and friends in a 7 car convoy. Can I ask what size tyres are you running on your lux please?
Thanks for your support!! We are running 285/75/17s on the lux!
Congrats, great set of vids! You are the first person (including myself - donut last year) that I have seen actually catch a fish at the tip!
Thank you very much, I think it’ll probably be the last time I catch one up there, my luck hasn’t been very good🤣
Great stuff guys ! We are heading up in August in our Lux ,can’t wait to get into it ! Love the storage system in the back !

Hi, how long does the road rake from elim beach to hope vale?
I think it was only around half hour
living the dream good onya!👍
🛻🤙😎📹🏞️ wicked ! love the intro song too !
Nice rig guys. One tip I've learnt is to store your first aid kit in a location you can reach from your seat. This way if your in a crash and are trapped in the car you can still access it.
Cheers! Definitely agree! We’ve since moved it to behind the passenger seat as there has been some occasions we’ve had to quickly grab it. Good tip!
Hi, Just read yr comment and I’m going to take that on board in my set up. Have a look at my Hilux set up, canopy set up and 12v set up Cheers Out There Touring
awesome work guys .
Cheers man!

Nice vid, looking forward to part two
question, when you have rods in the rod holder on the bull bar how do you keep the rods from flying out or someone taking them if you're parked up somewhere, I've been meaning to get one but its got me f*cked how they stay there
I haven’t had an issue with them flying out, and we did all of Fraser with them in, but you can put an occy strap over the reels to keep them in place. But if we pull up for a few hours away from the car I usually leave them in the canopy.
@@lifeinalux okay, thankyou
How long did you spend driving each day in this clip and how any Km's did you cover each day?
It was about 5 hours from Elim to Coen, 2 hours to Moreton station, and 30 minutes to Bramwell Roadhouse. Average of 80km/h the whole way
Great video 👍🏼 im about to head up in a few weeks time 👌
Cheers, you will a ball up there!!
📹🛻😎🤙🏞️ cool video ! congrats on your trip !
Cheers mate!
Yeww . Had the best time up there hanging out with you guys . Great video 🤟
Such a killer time! 🤙🏼
I am really enjoying this journey. A few good places to check out as you go further North are Cow bay, Roaring Megs falls and the lion's den pub. The Bloomfield Track is good too. The Creb track is great but not something to take on solo. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching! They all sounds good we shall at them to our list!! I have really wanted to do the Creb track but due to the last month of rain we will be giving it a miss 😢, but we will be taking the Bloomfield for sure!
Doing mine this week! we have a mattress topper on ours so hopefully this will still work. Great vid cheers!
You should be fine just make sure you fold it flat everytime and we split our pillows apart so it fits in between, FYI we left ours open and crushed the gears inside so it doesn’t lock in position anymore and we no hold it in place with elastic.

Hi Andrew, Just read yr comment. I place my pillows so the fan will lay in between them and act as a spacer. I’ve just read yr question. I have just released video where I wire straight to a cigie. Have a look and let me know what you think. Cheers Out There Touring
I didn’t realise it rains so much up there. Interesting to know. I can wait to get further north. Looks awesome 😊
Hey guys new follower and great vids. What time of the year were you there? Cheers Trent
Hey Trent, we went in mid feb, and it was very hot!!
Wicked build!
Cheers!
Hi Just read your comment and thought you might like to Have a look at my rig, canopy set up and 12v set up. see what you think. Cheers Out There Touring
G’day mate great video appreciate it I do have a question when you have your bedding and your mattress up there does a roof still close well with that fan connected
Hey Denis, we pack our pillows parallel to the tent so they leave a gap in the middle for the fan to sit in. As long as it’s packed up to the roof flat, there’s no dramas!
@@lifeinalux thanks for that.

Found you guys today and haven't stopped watching. I'm loving the time lapses with the amazing soundtrack, very calming and great to watch. Great job guys 👍
Nice set up! What brand door actuators did you use on the canopy latches? Cheers.
Hi, I got them off truckhardware.com.au!! Cheers
@@lifeinalux cheers I’ll sus them out. I wish I had thought of wiring the canopy doors into the open door light when I ran all the cabling, that’s such a good idea.

Some very cool ideas I haven’t seen before. Looks mint. Would love to see some more info on the breaks up front and the 12v setup. Awesome work keep it up. 👍
Cheers mate!
Anything you wanna know on the brakes/12v set up?
@@lifeinalux Very interested in how you managed to get bigger brakes on there, like what mods you had to do to fit them and things like that. With 12v setup, interested in that lithium and how everything is neatly wired up
As for the brakes, they are 120 series Prado Calipers, Discs, and pads new from sparesbox. You need to find the dust guards from a wreckers. I reused the hilux brake lines, and the calipers used the exact same mounting bolts as the hilux calipers. And you must have 17” Rims to clear them. It’s all pretty straight forward once you acquire the parts. As for the electrical, there is quite abit involved, the lithium is a 100AH DCS Battery, charged directly off the alternator with a Victron Argofet Alternator Splitter (this is required as it stops any backfeeding into the starter battery, if you looked it up on the Victron website it goes into more detail. It basically allows me to charge at 40-60a, however if I put in the 130a alternator, theoretically is should be able to get 100a+ of charge into the battery at a time, meaning a fully charged battery in under an hour. The front wall of the canopy is 9mm ply screwed to the vertical support leaving a 40mm cavity, which I ran catenary wires across between the support, and prewired all the cabling, then pulled it through the board as I installed it, there is a hatch behind the fridge which I have used to access behind it and wire some of the later mods! Hope this was what you were after, cheers!
