Especially when the German army high command knew they were going to lose the war. Executing American POWs would be a stupid foolish thing to do. The SS on the other hand……..

the officer wouldn't just fire into the air this seems like it takes place in late 1944 and the soldiers would conserve as much ammo as they could because around this time they were told to fire in either short bursts or semi auto with the STG 44 even though he is using the MP 40 it is the same.

There are many accounts of German soldiers holding American prisoners left them to be recaptured while the Germans retreated. There are many accounts of American soldiers who while retreating shot German prisoners so they wouldn't have to fight them again.
