Hi Ted. What is the part number for the shop manual. Thanks
@luisrodriguez-ww2zl For the older DPS-SM it is 7743008 DPS-A and newer it's 47701863
Permatex No. 2! I brush my teeth with that!
Had twin engine boat volvo diesels rewired them to remove the factory harness. One alternator would no longer 'start'. Had to apply voltage to field before it would charge. Had to do this at every start. Why did one charge by itself but the other wired identically would not 'start' ?
As far as I know the polarization switches on “D+” depending on what the alternator does. It’s “-“ when the engine is not running. The lamp in the dash gets plus from the battery when the ignition is on. Thereby it connects battery “+” and the alternator, which gets exited by a few Watts the lamp needs (that’s why LEDs don’t do the job as a battery-light). When starting the engine and spinning the exited alternator - it does its job: Producing energy for the battery as long and as much as the battery “wants” As soon as the alternator is spinning and exited “D+” becomes positive “+”. The lamp in the dashboard gets “+” on both connectors and goes off. (D+ = During spinning “positive”) Then you should have 12.8-14.5 V also on D+. As far es I know it doesn’t have load on it, but could be used or seen as a voltage meter signal. As soon as the alternator is not excited and or stops working (running, charging) D+ becomes “-“ again and the dash light goes on - right before your next headache. As I don’t have an edc on my tamd31 I don’t know what’s happening to the edc, but it might be some kind of electronical headache too. Please let me know if I’m wrong!!!
Yes, I believe you are correct. After some further research I believe these alternators are auto exciting and there is a set of diodes that allow some DC voltage to feed the D+ terminal and thus to other side of the battery bulb in the control panel. I'm just not sure what exactly happens when the alternator fails and exactly how the D+ terminal then becomes a path to ground for the bulb. It must be internal circuitry inside the alternator.
Hey Ted, thanks for another great video. The other day my EDC diag was flashing 5.2. I can't find anything on this. You ever seen that?
@Spicy-Tuna that code is for the nuetral light. Either faulty wiring or a bad bulb. You can try erasing the code to see if it's (intermittent) if it comes right back wire or a bulb.
Where can i get a shop manual
Hi Ted, I'm about to descale my heat exchangers with Barnacle Buster as a PM. Should I remove and cap anodes 1st? Thanks!
@danchekan1055 thats a good idea and then install new anodes after flushing them well.
First thing I’m thinking is what other things you can use this tool for, maybe old farm equipment, awesome tool Ted, thanks 😁👍
@davestewart9146 oh yeah, all kinds of stuff!
Always appreciate Ted’s postings. Glad to see young techs studying under TED!
Thanks Ted, never seen that tool before.
Hi Ted, Your videos are very well presented and clear to understand the various steps. A big thanks. I recently bought a 2001 boat with a Mercruiser 3 litre petrol engine with Alpha One sterndrive Gen 2. While doing an inspection of the bellows I noticed the exhaust bellow has come away from the gimble end (Secure on the bell housing end) so not exhausting through the prop. Does this matter? In one of your videos (May be this one) you mentioned replacing the original part with an Exhaust tube 78458A1 for better performance. I'm assuming from the appearance of it the connection is only to the bell housing end and the rear end simply hangs loose and the exhaust gasses are expelled without going through the prop. Your advice is appreciated. Many thanks, Gary
@algoabay No concern if it is not connected to the pivot housing. And when you change the drive bellows you can put the hp one on. It's makes the exhaust louder on plane but not by much.
Hi Ted great video. I have a tamd41a. Starts and runs fine from cold. However when i start it up from hot it wont rev above 800rpm no matter how far the throttle lever is pushed up. After about 5 minutes running it clears itself and runs normally. All new filters fitted. Any ideas?
hi ted, do you haver a picture of that 4.3 gi diagram?
I can’t figure where this yellow fiber washer with 4 black strips go..Can you help me???
It's from the gear oil plug?
Good afternoon Ted i have a 2002 glastrion with a 5.7 alpha 1 gen 2 thats over heating. I just bought it first time out it over heated. Found stuck thermostat. Replace it but still over heating. I removed the inlet hose on thermostat housing but the impeller doesnt send water. I replaced the impeller its still not sending water up with muffs or in a tub with water. Please help
Are PODS reliable? I'm reading a lot of issues with water in oil and seal issues, is it accurate? Debating whether I should go with shafts instead
@@crgeorge1 Those issues have been resolved. Those were a problem with early seal designs.
is the gear ration on the lower end or the upper?
What may I ask is the sealing compound on the putside of the seals at 5:10 in?
@@mosesgutierrez639 I have always used a non-hardening sealer. I believe it's made by peratex. The sealer I use is quicksilver perfect seal.
That plastic spacer is not available as a sparepart anymore but I guess that both this plastic spacer and the oring dont have to be there if you just take the time mounting the seals in the correct way with correct distance between them?
@davidandersson7945 agreed, the spacers are not used so the sealer is moved to a solid sealing surface with no groove.
Bravo sir. Also to add, the 4 fly weights I've found as you said keep the engine at a low rpm under load. When removing 2 of the fly weights, allows the engine to work conventionally.
Love these videos Ted. Our KAD300 has almost identical wiring. There were starting problems. I replaced all the relays and cleaned up the relay sockets. Seems to have solved the problem. I’ve also cleaned up the plugs in the harness to the single helm. I found the remote control was not locked to the harness. Looks like it never has been. Now the motor is quite reliable. The relays are Bosch and not expensive. Cheers
Awesome video! Thank you! 🙏🏾🤙🏾
Great video. I'm trying to troubleshoot an Onan 11.5 kw genset that running on (almost running away) at high rpm and the only thing shutting it off is shutting off the fuel at the manifold or blocking the intake. What do you think could be the cause of a genset running away and not be shutdown by the shutoff lever?
Good morning. Thankyou
Excellent. Most Volvo mechanics in the Bay Area do Micky Mouse work. I trust none of them.
It took a while to find this video on you tube . You have the best video on bellows R&R. You are a real mechanic and don't wear gloves or afraid to get your hands dirty. A lot of good tips and very helpful.Thanks.
@dxn1999 I'm glad it helped and yes still working on stuff.
Thank you for this video. With my two D4 270, the control works very well at idle in forward gear, but I have to go past the first notch, so that in reverse the propellers turn. Can I use your procedure to recalibrate the reverse control. Thanks in advance. Olivier
It is good to have gotten some info from this, wish you'd given more still, like what quality filter to use etc etc, what mfg is best? but thnx stll.
Hey Ted. Great video. I have a engine tamd 31. The smoke is white/grey. Also when the engine is hot. Is that normal?
I never realized that the two counterotating propellers were so different, both in baldes design and pitch. Wonder why.
Thank you Ted. Lots of insight.
Great video Mr.Ted thank you very much.
I have the same engine. After this video, I noticed my diodes are missing!? Why would this be? My engine is: 1998 Princess V40, and it is equipped with two Volvo Penta KAD44P/DP-E diesel engines, each with 260 horsepower. Advice is appreciated.

Your videos are great. Helps explain what the manual sometimes misses.
My key broke off. Part is stuck inside the rod what should I do?
It should be somewhat a loose fit. you can try spraying some carb cleaner around the inside of the broken off part, then lay the lower unit on it's side on a table with the key hold facing down and hit the driveshaft with a plastic hammer or a piece of wood to shock the broken piece out. Gravity should prevail.
Super helpful with my Mercruiser 260. Thank you very much
