😂 I'm a bad guy. I walk up to you,.pull my recentley stolen hipoint and demand your obvious gun purse. Now, you are unarmed, dead, or both. Dumbest trend on the interweb today.
Sounds like a geat light for my wake up in the midle of the night gun.
There is no "stopping power" in handgun rounds. So sick of this absolute ignorace. Any caliber will kill if it hits the right spot. The most powerful handgun rounds have failed to kill with many rounds in some scenarios. Every threat is not equal. A Cree Indian woman killed a 1000 pound brown bear with 1 shot of .22LR Does that make .22LR an ideal brown bear "stopper"? Hell no! She put the round where it needed to go. Through the ear canal into the brain without having to penetrate that thick skull. Speaking of thick skulls, more time wasted and ignorance shown with the handgun caliber debate. If you feel more manly with a large caliber good for you. The fact is that a person should carry what they can use effectively to get as many bullets as possible into spots that matter as quickly as possible until the threat or threats stop. And nobody knows what those threats will actually be and what it will take to stop them. I blame movies and T.V. for this B.S. Even otherwise normal gun people become mentally retarded about caliber. There is no "stopping power" in a caliber. Only in putting any bullet(s) into parts that will cause the threat to stop functioning as a threat. Plenty of examples of every caliber failing to stop threats after MANY rounds. Guy shot 13 times, including face, with .45acp hornady critical defense. The guy lived and even returned fire. Where was the "stopping power"? And then some have fired a single round of .45acp and did the job. Even .44mag has been used at point blank and failed to "stop" the threat. Reality in not a movie or video game. Use the caliber you want and get good with it and carry alot of ammo because nobody has too much ammo in a fight. And stop arguing ignorant caliber stuff. Carrying .40S&W doesn't change the fact that you have a small pen*s.
These stats don’t make sense
Show the occurrences with each round because if 1 round has 1000 data points but another round only has 20 data points then an adjustment needs to be made
Unless every shot hit the same place all this means nothing. A properly placed 22lr will do the job better than a mega anything else that misses. There is no such thing as stopping power, it's a made up myth. A person under the influence of drugs etc, will react very different than one not impaired. This is just more of lets talk about something and use statistics to confirm bias.
.357 magnum has a nickname, “king of the street.”
Thank you, good data, thanks for the recommendation on Kyle’s books, I’ll check them out for sure!
Stopping power for whom and where? Indoor, outdoor, close, medium, long range? Mountain, Jungle, Desert, Urban? Defensive, offensive?
Nothing works without training.
The sheer amount of 9mm shootings is definitely going to skew the data, probably most active duty military, police, and civilians (many of the civilians without significant firearms training) are going to be firing 9mm.
I'm VERY surprised that the 12ga wasn't far more effective. What were people using, small bird low-brass rounds??? After seeing the devastation the 1,610fps 1oz slugs I have do to a gallon jug of water, I can't imagine that NOT being a 1-shot stop. Even the 9 pellet )) buckshot shells I have at 1,425fps are like getting shot by 9 very high power 9mm rounds each shot.
How does one shoot .4 rounds?
So does the .22 category in these studies cover 22 WMR (magnum) and as well as 22 long rifle? Or just one or the other?
CDC data states that black kids 15 to 24 are committing 100/100,000 shooting deaths. next highest is 25 to 35 at 86/100,000. whites are at 2/100,000. situational awareness is most important.
Wrong question, it is bullet placement, a .22 lr in the right spot , to the right depth is fatal...
what about 10mm?
More like who had the most accurate shot, lol 😆 and what was the most common caliber for those shots.
All this video should reveal to the viewers, is that this is the same way government, corporations, special interest groups etc. can manipulate studies to get you to believe their narrative. The real question you should ask people is " What is the round you most likely do not want to be shot with? Now you will get the real truthful answers.
Shot placement is what matters
The first caliber that lands a crippling wound. There's a good reason why smaller calibers are useful, (1) the weapon is lighter and quicker to use, (2) it is easier to be accurate, (3) you can carry more rounds for less weight, so have less fatigue, and less risk of running out of ammunition in a fire fight. Also if you can carry something with a stock instead of a handgun, your accuracy will be far better. Most of all you need to know (1) where will you use it, (2) what do you need to stop ?
looking at the data it seems that the .380 did better in every metric than the 9MM. A couple of years ago I read a study that said the .380 caliber has killed more people then any other round in non-military situations. I wonder why so many bad mouth that little bullet when it seems very effective.
Interesting how 32acp has the 3rd highest incapacitation from 1 shot. Either its super deadly or its a round used by maybe older people who only fired a single round before the bad guy stopped doing bad things.
lol, yep… 32acp has more “man stopping” “knockdown power” than 9mm. Hard to take any of this seriously.
I've tried various training programs, but it's good to see one specifically tailored for Hyrox athletes. I might give this a shot.
I’ve been looking for a structured way to improve my fitness for Hyrox. This 8-week program might be just what I need to get started.
A hit in any vital with a 22 cal is far more effective than a limb shot with a 44...this debate has been settled forever by historical studies like this... opinions don't mean jack sh!t !! Although I am SHOCKED the 380 and even 32 beat the 9mm ?!?!? Now I have to question this particular study ?!?
It's just better to have a weapon for self-defense and not need it, then to need it and not have it
i carry a 9mm lowcost pistol a taurus g3 with 2spare mags and for me its shot placement...
Thanks for the video. These kinds of studies are important, but how he classifies and uses the data is just as important. Based on the numbers that you shared, I don't think he's distinguishing between physical stops and psychological stops. As you mentioned, he may not be distinguishing between ball ammunition and hollowpoint ammunition. If I understood correctly, there were differences in the percentages of shots that hit the head or torso. If larger numbers of 9mm shots aren't hitting the head or torso, then we shouldn't expect 9mm to be making stops. I agree with you that in real-life shootings with semi-automatic pistols, many shootings will involve two or three bullets hitting the person who is shot. With a revolver, the number of shots that hit are more likely to be only one or two. I think we should also look at differences among different types of shootings. In most self-defense shootings involving a citizen, the attacker is not necessarily going to be highly motivated to press the attack to some final solution. If the citizen hits the attacker once, the attacker is more likely to try to escape the situation and seek help somewhere. The attacker often has no reason to keep fighting. In a law enforcement shooting, the attacker is often being arrested. If the attacker gives up, he's going to jail. That provides more motivation to keep attacking until he's either dead or has escaped. In the case of a criminal shooting someone, a few circumstances could apply. Gang members shooting at each other in turf wars may want to kill one another, but they are more likely to be taking longer shots from moving cars or in other odd situations. Those circumstances will often mean that their shots aren't in the center of the torso or head. They don't necessarily need to incapacitate the other person. They just want to do some kind of harm and then escape. Other criminals are trying to kill people in order to steal from them. An armed robber may kill a store clerk in order to steal money and not be identified. The armed robber is more likely to be taking a few shots from close range and then escaping the area. Each of these is a different scenario with different purposes. We might get very different results if we didn't group them together. For most people, the best choice in today's world is likely a 9mm because the ammunition is readily available and less expensive than the ammunition for other calibers. If I had to defend myself against human attackers, I'd feel equally confident with 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 Magnum. I really doubt that there is any difference in these calibers except for how each individual shooter can shoot each individual gun in any of these calibers. I tend to see .380 ACP and .38 Special as being just behind these four.
Every study will come up with different percentages for different calibers versus what was derived from this sampling! According to the tables in this study, .38 Special and .380 outperformed 9mm Luger in virtually all comparisons, yet the .38 Special and .380 fire the same .355 diameter projectile in various weights at lower velocity than the 9mm! On what planet does that make sense other than random results?! The .357 (assumably magnum as the author doesn’t specify) performs better than all of the other .355 projectiles listed, and has the highest velocity of all four which makes perfect sense considering velocity only needs to be increased by roughly 41% to double a given rounds kinetic energy. An educated guess as to the results of this study indicating more favorably toward the .357 magnum, .38 special, and .380 auto is shot placement and distance to target, with the .38 special and .380 often being “pocket guns” used at point blank distances, and the .357 Magnum being a revolver, therefore limited in available shots which encourages proper shot placement.
so the 22 out performas the .44 mag, right? your study sucks, dude.
They dont get one round, They get the entire Mag.
These results are pretty much what i thought they would be, if i were honest. Naturally, in a conceal carry situation, i still would want a 9mm for weight and capacity but in "tactical" situation it be a 10mm or a 45 acp, and wild life would be 357, 44, or 10. It's just really hard to justify the 40 for anything when there are others that just do it better at some capacity. And these numbers kinda support that imho
Been done (very thoroughly) before. See: Even Marshall stopping power list.
Civil war stats had the 44 C&B had a real life 60% 1 shot stop
I appreciate this information so much. Thanks! 🥇🫶
That fact that the 9mm comes in at LOWER than rounds like the .380 or even a 22 on these charts prove that these charts are utterly meaningless and put numbers before context. If anyone thinks a .380 has MORE 'stopping power' than a 9mm, they are an idiot. If anyone believes these charts that you can fire fewer rounds to stop an assailant using a 22 as opposed to a 9mm, they are an idiot.
Bullet placement! No such thing as "Stopping Power"! Also, a .22 will kill a large Bull, so where would place that 37gr projectile? A human, flight or fight mode? Learn while you are young...Study Evan Marshal!
Elifritz's data is some of the best. Unfortunately there are so many factors that cannot be measured that we need to be very skeptical of the implications, and be very careful about drawing conclusions from it. As an example, looking at the data at 3:39, this really leaves more questions than answers. How is the .22 beating .357 on avg number of rounds to incapacitation? Or 6:32 where we see rounds that didn't incapacitate but we have no data on how many rounds were fired in these shootings nor shot placement. We can speculate but our speculations will probably be even less accurate than just drawing straight conclusions from the hard numbers. Final thoughts: That's not really correct, IDPA does not provide the right context for self defense shooting. Too many reasons to go into in the comments, I'll probably do a video on it soon.
My neighbor was on a local city police force and a group of us (about half LEO, a few of us former military) were shooting 3-shot timed. Two for center mass, one head, at 3 targets. When I went and matched their top times he said "but you shot the head first. You're supposed to shoot the body first". I said "that body was for effect. One to the dome and the threat no longer exists". He looked at me and said "fair point" LOL.
Range of target makes a major play here. Deploying a 380 shot is not done from at a 25 yard target. It is most likely less than 1 to 3 yards. Same for the 22 cal rounds. Shooting paper is one thing, add a full adrenaline rush to a tactical requirement to defend your life is another.
Something is better than nothing. Naive comments generally miss the idea that you must have it on your person always. SMH
What this data cannot tell you is what percentage of shooters were crappy shots. That is an unknown. I say that those who are good shooters, have trained well, stay sharp, will probably have better numbers than those who are not trained or have little instruction and do not practice shooting very often. Lastly, if you can use a long gun (rifle or shotgun) for home defense, I recommend it. Why? More lethality and more points of contact with the firearm which makes accuracy easier to achieve with all sorts of adrenaline flowing. In my 28yr career in the Army infantry, I never used a handgun in a fight when rounds were inbound. Proper ammo in both is important. Also, a shotgun takes some effort if you are a novice. An AR is a simple weapon to get good with quickly. Look at basic training. Young guys come in, have never touched a rifle. At the end, they can now do quite well. The learning curve is not crazy for a shotgun, but with lower round count, you definitely need to be able to run that gun WELL. I love an AR because I know it like the back of my hand after using the M16A1, M16A2, M4. The handgun. If you are going to carry one, put the time in to be the most accurate shooter you can be. Forget shooting quickly if you are inaccurate. Crawl, walk run. When speed overtakes accuracy, you are wasting time and hope is a poor course of action. Go back and look at the info in this video of the 44mag and 357mag revolver data. You do not have many rounds, so accuracy counts a lot. When you are accurate, slowly increase speed. When accuracy starts decreasing, back off and try again. It takes time and patience. Sorry for an old man's ramblings. I want those who watch this video to be the best they can be. Stay Frosty!
To be picky, rifle and shotgun are not a "caliber"as listed on the chart. These firearms encompass many calibers which vary in effectiveness.
With the pistols there is also a training caliber correlation, 10mm or 357 might be carried by more proficient shooter
There are many extra factors, distance, training of the shooter. E.g. the 32 is better than the 9mm, most likely much closer
80% of all gun shot victims servive! 😮
No 10mm? I guess real men don't end up in gun fights.
So, basically, if you need to stop a threat the data shows a clear preference for a rifle or shotgun. In the home, I don't think there's an excuse if the budget allows for one of the two. However, for pistols, which you could actually carry on your person discretely, it looks like the major calibers perform closely enough that they don't make much of a difference. 40 seems to have a slight edge, but 9mm is more economical for training, and 44 is clearly dominant, but comes in a large package that probably isn't ideal.
