Le P'tit Train du Nord Descents. (Don't watch - pretty boring...)

Did a route (Madawaska/Mont Laurier/Quebec City/Perce) this past summer and due to mechanicals and time constraint opted to bypass some of the Route Verde and the Bic. A mistake. Love your content and humour.
Hey Mike, that sounds like a good ride - the Gaspesie Loop is on my short list for 2025. It's a beautiful part of Quebec for sure. Thanks for watching!
There is nothing boring about this. Still have to get there to ride it. I might ski portions of it in Jan - Feb provided there is good snow to Classic / Skate ski. Still waiting to see you video on La Route Des Bleuets ;-). Thanks for sharing. As for watching something while on trainer, a series that has episodes works well for me. Happy indoor riding.😁
Hello again Jean. The great thing about the PTDN is that you can ride as much or as little as you’d like. I was back again in September and had another fantastic ride - weather was amazing. I’ll start editing my Veloroute des Bluets footage in the near future - I’m not really a big fan of sitting in front of a computer for hours - but I’ll bet it done. Thanks for watching!

Living in Montreal, it is amazing that your car was still there after 5 days...
Ya, I’ve had that concern, but here’s my secret - I drive old, but reliable cars. I doubt my 13 year old Mazda is going to end up in a shipping container on its way to Bulgaria. Thanks for watching.
After viewing your touring, I fully enjoyed your video, hopefully you will have more touring videos 😅🎉
Thanks. I did le P’tit again a couple weeks ago and the Veloroute de Bleutes in July.
@@guyonabike3103 awesome great, I'll take a look
What gear do you recommend for the climb after mont Tremblant, i have a 9 gear hybrid bike
That should be sufficient. Just take your time a stop for breaks. Remember - there is no reward for easy…
@guyonabike3103 ✨️😄 thank you for your kind advice
🎉🎉❤ boisé du village, Hot shower, fully equipped kitchen, grocery store 15 minutes walk .ppl are sweet ❤
Yep - my favourite place to camp for those reasons. I stayed two nights in early September.
Mont Laurier bridge is damaged and it's been over a few years that the trail is closed. It's going to cost millions to put in a new one for cyclists 🚴♂️ 2024 still detours 😢
187 free stealth camping 🏕 with 24hrs toilet and clean drinking water 🚰 restaurant closes at 9pm and breakfast is served as well
Park ranger said one is allowed to stealth camp 🏕 due to lack of logging at km187 that hotel in the village is never open
27:34, quiet stealth camping 🏕 👌 😍 and water up road on km 180 with a spigot of spring water 💧
Thanks for watching.
Exact ! C'est au km 182.5.
@CampingMasterPierreNadon ouias 😄
😂 me too lac saguay same 2024 still under construction 🚧 😑 Only services available are two restaurants and 1 highway rest stop off the trail and the municipal beach ⛱️
Ya, I gave it a pass this year and stayed at the Boise du village…
The casse-croute in nominingue has tasty burgers 🍔 😋 Right side off the trail Reasonable price for a treat yourself reward 🎉❤
I would have gone there but it was closed when I was there a couple weeks ago!
😮 grocery store downhill in labelle village opens before the train station restaurant 😅
Ya, as soon as you’re off-trail the roads can be steep!
Labelle station, 2 day stealth camping along the trees right side opposite of the rv campers 🏕 tolerance, washroom and shower availability
I like that spot as well - a nice spot to stop for lunch among the pine trees…
2024 was brutal with detours. Being a noobee 😂 did a lot of walking alongside equipment from val Barrett to saguay 😅
That was a long one for sure. But next year it should all be paved!
@@guyonabike3103 hopefully 🙏 😌
Questions: What is easier going north or south on the trail. With camping equipment.
Probably northbound - but no matter which direction there’s still some climbing to be had! Thanks for watching.
Just stumbled onto your Chanel. Nice one! Did the P'tit Train a few weeks ago (North to South) as part of a 'one-way' solo 20-day Madawaska Valley to Gaspe ramble. Had a blast. Keep it up! The horror,...the horror!
Hey Mike. Thanks for watching! That would have been a great ride - the Gaspesie is on my bucket list. I think anywhere along the St. Lawrence makes for a nice ride. Ride safe!
very nice!
Merci beaucoup!
The region used to be a place to transform trees into electrical poles hence the species of the area 😉
Thanks for the info - it makes sense.
Look into Decathlon apparel 🎉
Thanks but once I have gear I like I stick with it.
The loons evening song 🎵 calming 😌
True. Thanks for watching!
Mont Tremblant national park 🏞 😍 and the Water Stream is refreshing ✨️
Yes it is certainly a beautiful spot!
Going to ride the trail in a week or so from Mont Laurier to St Jerome over 4 days. Riding with 3 other people…they’ve got e-bikes, I have a gravel bike, lol. Hopefully they don’t leave me in the dust. Really looking forward to the ride. Staying in hotels three nights. So, it should be easier (only 50-60 km per day and comfortable accommodations to recover). Thanks for the video. Gave me a preview of what to expect. Cheers.
Hey Louie. 1st thing I would do is throw their ebike batteries into Lake Nominingue. That would even the playing field a bit (or find different riding partners). Seriously though - 50k is a 2 hour ride on an e-bike. You’ll have lots of time for exploring! Enjoy the ride.
@@guyonabike3103 lol. I bought one of those e-bikes, for my wife. Cost too much to be throwing batteries into the lake😀. It is going to be a leisurely ride everyday. Trying to get my wife into cycling. She loves the e-bike, so far; but this will be a big test to see if we can do more of these. I appreciate the info. Cheers
@@louievisentin3224 I’m sure you’ll have a great time. Ride safe!
Thanks for this video. It got me through a ride on Rouvy this morning. It reminded me of a bike trip I did from MTL to Quebec City to see my GM. A cool fact is that my GM’s brother was the head priest at the church of cap d’espoir for several years. I remembered visiting him on a family vacation in the late 70s. He also helped / did a sabbatical at notre dame des neiges in trois pistoles. Amazing memories. Thank you. Can’t wait to see your video of La Route des Bleuests. 🎉😊😅
Hello again Jean! That is a very beautiful area for sure. I always know when I’m approaching a small town in Quebec when I spot a silver church spire in the distance. Once again, thanks for watching and by the way, Rouvy is my choice for training rides in the winter!
Its refreshing to see someone actually still using a paper map to navigate 😂
Ya, I’m funny that way. I can read a paper map like other people read books. I learned to navigate using map and compass from an early age and it’s a skill I’ve never really lost. Thanks for watching!
We are planning on cycling the P'tit this coming August and thought your video did a good job showing the path. Some of the comments are also quite amusing. Would you be able to tell me what handle bar bag you use. I always take a map, but keep in a jersey pocket which is kind of a pain, especially with a rain jacket on. Having it in front of me would be great. Thanks for posting your video.
Hey Tom; thanks for watching. Sorry for the late response - I was riding the Veloroute des Bluets and I try to avoid the real world as much as possible when I’m touring! The handlebar bag is MEC branded but I just replaced it after 5 years- it was supposed to be waterproof but it never really was. I replaced it with an Ortlieb 6 and it’s much better. A little expensive but it should last forever. You should have a great time on the P’tit! Ride safe.
@@guyonabike3103 Thank you for the response. Glad you were able to get away. Don't blame you for trying to avoid the "real world" while out - I do the same thing when I am on backpacking trips. I did look at the Ortlieb bag, but thought I would just check if you may have another brand. I have Ortlieb panniers and they have worked well, so I will stick with Ortlieb for this also. Yes it costs a little more, but the stuff will last as you said. Thanks again and BTW, I like your pint of beer routine!!!
@@tombebee After a long, hot/cold, sunny/rainy day of bike touring, sitting by a campfire with a pint is a well-deserved simple pleasure. Ride safe!
Hello again. Great video and inspiration to ‘get’er done’. Hoping this September as still recovering from shoulder injury / surgery from one year ago. You need to try Cheval Blanc’ beer 😊. However - you might have to buy 6. 😮. Thanks for the on markets for camping as I am hoping to also do a there and back. Any issue leaving your car in st Jerome? Thanks for sharing.
Salut Jean! Good to hear from you again. Sorry for the delayed response - I just got back from riding the Veloroute des Bluets. The P’tit would be great as a recovery ride. If things don’t workout you can just turn around! Lots of parking in St Jerome - however you will have to pay. I did pick up some Blanc de Chambly - it’s one of my go-to’s that I can’t get in Ontario. Ride safe!
@@guyonabike3103 wow. Chanceux. Friends of mine did it early July. They were quite impressed. On my to do list. Cant wait to view the video while I ride indoors 🤷♂️. Going to morin heights in 2 weeks for 3 days. Da plan is getting up early and ride st agathe to st Jerome and back. Still planning for a September ‘get ‘er done’. Again many thanks for sharing. 🤛

That’s a nice ride. Have a good time!
Nice, it's now pave between Ste-Agathe and St-Faustin. Would have like to be able to read the comments 😢 but thanks for sharing.
Salut Richard. Your English is probably better than my French! Hopefully I’ll be back and riding the newly paved section in September. Thanks for watching.
Stunning views!
As a fellow touring cyclist, I appreciate the effort put into sharing this experience.
No problem Greg. I enjoy riding and making the videos. I try to add info that would help other people ride the same route. Ride safe!
Your bicycle frame repainting, wheel building, and the art of bike assembly are great in the way you went about making the video! I'm a big supporter of the MEC London Store. Kudos.
Thanks again Greg. Even though MEC has gone through some changes in the last few years, it’s still my go-to for outdoor kit (and I was also a casual employee at the Barrie store for almost eight years.)
Thanks for the content. By the way, I also have a vet plate.
Once again, thanks for watching. I always enjoy hearing from other veterans - if the London in your tag refers to London, Ontario, I was actually stationed there in the early 90’s. It’s a nice little city! Ride safe.
Thanks for the content. Your YT logo caught my "eye" after you left a comment on Wandering Eye Outdoors, latest video. I have done my fair share of bikepacking since 2017.
Hey Greg. Thanks for watching. If you’re looking for somewhere to ride you can’t fault Quebec (in my opinion anyways)…
At least the people on ebikes are out and not sitting on the couch eating bonbons...
That’s debatable… The only ones that really benefit is the industry that shells these things for $3000+ with a proprietary battery that will only last <5 yrs…
@@guyonabike3103 There are lots of ebikes under $2000 compare to the very expensive road bikes for $5000+. I have an ebike and a MTB. If I want to ride single track trails with lot hills will use the MTB, if I'm doing a multiday ride over long distance will use the ebike to save the knees and enjoy the country. My view is as long as you are out there getting some exercise who cares what you are riding
epic
thanks🤙
Stunning views!
Thank you kind sir. May you always walk hand in hand with our Lord on an endless journey of light and faithfulness surrounded by your like-minded brethren also on a journey of humility and service with our Lord who is also on a journey with us.
no public restrooms down there because during the busy tourist season the restrooms get destroyed by people that think someone is here to cater to them and clean up after them. The "poor maintenance" complaint that would undoubtedly come as a result would be a worse mark on the area than no public rest rooms at all. There are plenty of places else where to use a restroom. decent video though lol
It was also the tail end of covid so a lot of places were still closed. Thanks for watching.
Amazing again - you need to do 'la route des bleuets' - merci encore pour les belles images
Thanks for watching again Jean. You’re probably the fifth person thats mentioned the blueberry route. It’s on my list for my 2024 tours! I’ll be posting the second part of my Bas-Saint-Laurent shortly - I ride up to Parc du Bic on that one!
Thank you for sharing this - My brother has a cottage just north of the access in St-Agathe which is amazing but i have only done the 35-60k and back - boy was the false flat coming back not a lot of fun but this is an amazing piece of history. Plan is for me to do St-Jerome - Mt Laurier / back next year provided i am allowed to do so ;-)
Salut Jean! Thanks for watching my video. I actually went back in September and rode the whole trail from St Jerome to Mt Laurier and return. You’re right - that climb is a long one! I’m still blown away by the trail and the fact I can ride on a bike path through the woods surrounded by nature for 200 kms! I like it so much in fact that I might make it an annual ride. Maybe I’ll see you on the trail! Ride safe.
Hey "Guy on a Bike". You have no contact info in your "about" section of your youtube channel so I'm leaving a comment as a way to reach out. I'm considering moving to Barrie. The town I currently live in is fairly "bike friendly" (lot's of dedicated bike lanes with painted lines and a few protected bike lanes on some of the major streets. Also has a shared path through the centre of town that enables you to get almost anywhere with very litttel vehicle interaction. Does Barrie put cycling at the bottom of the priority list seeing as it is historically a commuter town that used to be entirely carcentric. Let me know. Cheers.
Hey Ian; Barrie talks a big game about “active transportation” but in practice it’s not so good. There are quite a few painted bike lanes but they will start and stop at random. There is no inter-connected bike lane route and at this point no separated or buffered bike lanes. I’ve bike commuted forever with or without bike lanes but I’ll use them when I can. Hope this helps. Ride safe!
@@guyonabike3103 Newmarket is very forward thinking regarding active transportation/public transit. I've all but pulled the trigger to buy a condo in Barrie so hopefully climate change (in the political realm) will start to change their priorities in the next 2-5 years. thanks for the feed back.
probably my favourite, P'Tit Train Du Nord video. Loved the written narration
Thanks again! I try to make my videos in the style I like to watch when planning a tour - with info like where to stay, places of interest, etc. Also a fan of Japanese travel videos where the camera person does not show themselves. Ride safe!
"too many dweebs milling about" haha. Really enjoyed this trip!
I figure if I can make fun of myself I should be able to make fun of everyone else! Seriously though, the trail is awesome - I’m planning on returning in September and riding the entire length from Ste Jerome to Mt Laurier and return. (There should also be far fewer “dweebs” on the trail then compared to the summer months). Thanks for watching!
@@guyonabike3103 I am going to ride it myself, this year, though as a hammock camper, I am not sure, any of those camp grounds, will do. I hear wild camping, is easier done, north of tremblant parc. Did you find some crown land, along the trail?
@@FranciscoGarcia-fo7yf Around km 164 there is true free camping right beside the trail. Aside from that, stealth camping would be pretty easy anywhere as long as you know what you’re doing.
