Wagner "An Webers Grabe" played on Lätzsch Trombones
I wished to showcase my three beautiful Lätzsch trombones from the 1950's and 60's. Wagner wrote this short choral ode to commemorate the relocation of Carl. M. von Webers (1786-1826) remains from London to Dresden in 1844. It works equally well on trombones and especially these traditional German-style trombones.
The three trombones used were built by Herbert Lätzsch in Bremen. They are all marked Modell Kuhn after the famous trombone builder Franz Kuhn of Wuppertal, who was brought in after retirement by Lätzsch to assist in continuing and developing the design. These instruments were formerly very popular in Germany, and I hope to see a resurgence of interest in them. They have a uniqu...

Bach on Conn #3 Toccata in D minor "The Dorian" BWV 538 Arranged by Ralph Sauer
Просмотров 7574 года назад
Another great Ralph Sauer arrangement of a Bach organ work. The Dorian toccata is much less well known than the famous Toccata and Fugue, but at least we are sure that J.S. himself actually wrote this one! This challenging arrangement was made for the Eastman Trombone Choir. I performed this on Elkhart Conn's from the 60's. I also took the liberty of adding a 32 foot pedal stop on the last D. I...
Fantasia and Fugue in C minor. BWV 537. Arranged for 8 trombones by Ralph Sauer. Bach on Conn #2
Просмотров 4094 года назад
A wonderful arrangement of this profound prelude followed by one of Bach's most exciting fugues. It was a great favourite of Sir Edward Elgar, whose orchestration is tremendously exciting. Ralph Sauer had done a brilliant job of making this piece work so well for trombones. cherryclassics.com/ cherryclassics.com/products/bach-fantasia-fugue-in-c-minor-bwv-537-for-8-part-trombone-choir?_pos=1&_s...

Penzel alto trombone ca. 1850-55
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.8 лет назад
This is a beautiful J.C. Penzel alto which must have been built in the 1850's. How do we know this? Because of absence of snake decoration, and no use of nickel silver which were added to trombones from the early 1860's. What's amazing is how great the response and intonation are on this 165 years old trombone. The slide is not original. All parts are made of brass including the inner slides.

    Do you know anything about Mayes of London trombone mouthpieces of this period? I have one that says Mayes, London, 78, 4. I'm guessing 1878 is the year, 4 is the size?

    Great find! I have a very similar trombone made by E Paulus of Berlin. The snakes on mine are less elaborate. I'm going to have a detachable counterweight made because it's so darned slide-heavy. The garland on mine is very small. The range overall is better than most of my modern horns. I was on the hunt for a German 19th century horn with thin metal, soft alloy, and the Paulus checked all the right boxes.

    • @timsackbutt
      @timsackbutt 3 года назад

      Queisser's instrument didn't survuve but I have evidence that his last one was built in silver or nickel silver. Evidence suggests he played a Sattler trombone and had close contact with the builder, since Sattler's workshop was close to where he lived. I presume it was similar to the big Sattler in the Leipzig Grassi museum.
