I love what Dennis says at 2:00, fundamentally we don't really know what people are capable of until we push the right (or wrong) sequence of butttons and I think the same applies with characters. Some of their motivation is circumstantial and some is inherent.

2022: 15:00 'A desperate need for new writers' has been said by many since the 80s! There is a desperate need to stop training/guiding writers into writing so badly. Every script re British television drama in the last 30 odd years sounds like every other script! Every line of dialogue sounds like everyone else's dialogue. Most of the talented writers left eons ago and for good reason. Today's writers mirror the 'standard' they have been brought up and trained with and so it becomes inescapable. I've also noticed it in some professional script readers who have a tendency to think in overly used storytelling techniques. Most producers have a tendency to treat audiences as though they had never watched drama before. If anything, audiences watch considerably more than we do which takes them miles up the road asking us to catch up. They don't need the endless help. Let writers position themselves ahead of the audience and the audience will feel this and enjoy it. In the 90s McGovern said 'we're producing dozens and dozens of bad television writers who think they're writing for television but are in fact writing for radio i.e. the microphone' and although Jimmy was once a hero, his scripts for Brookside and Cracker were stunners, I disagree with him; most drama is watched by women who do not care too much for the visual aspect but they passionately care about characters and their conversations and it's these two that have suffered the most. Scripts come across as though they've been written by writers in straightjackets which is the opposite to what happens in American tv: study highly successful American television; for example 'The Big C' which has fabulous stories and storytelling; dramatic/funny; fabulous cast; performances; pace; full of wows; full of surprises; hypnotic; original; entertaining; every other line is a piece of art; makes you desperate for more; elements British writing used to contain over 30/35 years ago. There's been more and more writers entering television since the mid80s but they turn into the same person - the same voice - which cannot be their fault? Who is still watching British terrestrial (drama) tv these days? Get a firestick and away you go.
